College of Science/University of Salahaddin-Erbil,Erbil city , Kurdistan Region, Iraq Abstract The present study was undertaken to determine whether melatonin, metformin and their combination could change serum lipid profiles, electrolytes and serum calcium in sucrose enrich diet.For this purpose male albino rats were divided into five groups, each of six animals. Group1: Animals served as control, Group2: Animals received sucrose supplemented diet (60 %) for five weeks. Group 3: Animals were treated as in Group 2 plus melatonin supplementation (45 mg/kg diet). Group 4: Animals were treated as in Group 2 plus metformin (500 mg/L in drinking water).Group 5(Combination): Animals were treated as in Group 2 and received both melatonin and metformin. Results: Hyperglycemia that was detected in sucrose enriches diet was markedly reduced by melatonin, while metformin administration slightly lowered blood glucose. Serum total cholesterol and triacylglycerol were raised by sucrose enrich diet.
