RADIO XEROK Staff Rocked The general manager of XEROK, Ray Gardella, wanted more local commitment and involvement on a personal level, so he fired Kent Burkhart as a consultant and John Long as PD. The new PD is Ray Potter Immediately - after the termination of Long, three jocks walked out. Paul Leigh (6 -10 am), Chris O'Conner (10-3 pm) and Jay Walker (3.7 pm), Also leaving is Rosaline Frank, production director. The apparent power play by the manager was reported to R&R to have occurred without the knowledge the of station ownership. R&R could not verify this claim.

"LT. COLONKO" Johnny Morgan, PO at KOON Salinas, realized the lack of new Christmas product for rock stations, so he created his own. It isa Dickie Goodman -type record "Lt. Requests have been phenomenal, so they pressed up 1000 to give away as prizes in an on -the-air promotion. You might want to call John for a copy. (408) 422.5363. coming (especially in the realm of a

Beatles -type sensation) by analyzing "the way things are going." The old ten year cycle theory obviously no longer applies. You cannot say for example, Elton John will be the next "culturequake" because he is getting more popular every day. Nor that dancing music will take over our lives because discotheques are re-emerging all over the country. These are observations of evolution

GEORGE HARRISON

BY MIKE HARRISON Way back in 1972 was given the opportunity to write a piece for Record World which dealt with my musical predictions for 1973. A copy of that article, marked up the same way a high school English teacher critiques a composition, was sent to me in January of 1974 by Promo- Person Extraordinaire, Jan Basham to remind me of my many miscalculations. It is very difficult to

thesound and body of the Beatles that meshed with the frequency of the total mass subconsciousness that triggered an immediate and tangible alteration of the aforementioned EMCC. The odds against it happening at any specific time are immense, and for anyone to actually premeditate it is just about impossible. The difference between fads, movements and culture quakes is time. How long do you think we have to wait before our kids are inspired to take over the world?

Denver is "Part of the Plan:' The Dan Fogelberg cult has begun to foster a fanatical following. In Denver, "Part of the Plan" jumped from 32 to 27 on KTLK, from 39 to 35 on KIMN, and it's being played on KLZ -FM, KFMLand KBPI. And that's only a part of the action. The single is being aired on MOR and C &W stations.the phones are ringing off the walls at the radio stations and retail stores, and Dan, through a recent appearance in the area, has captured the audience thoroughly. Perhaps a greater indication is that the album "Souvenirs" is the number one chart rernrd on KTLK. pla. be complete. Soc'

RECORDS RECORD INDUSTRY NOTES by Candy Thsken TOWER TIDBITS AND RUMORS It's official: Ringo has a newly formed label called "Ring O'Records" distributed in the United States and Canada by Capitol as announced by Capitol President, Bhaskar Menon. The first album release will be offered in February which features the songs from Starr's Ringo album performed by David Hentschel on the ARP 2503 synthesizer titled "Sta'rtling Music "... Capitol has also entered into a long -term agreement with Far Out Productions including an exclusive worldwide distribution rights to Eric Burdon, Jimmy Witherspoon and other Far Out Artists to be announced at a later date. Steve Gold who is co- founder of Far Out is also War's manager -producer. The rumors on the street for months have been that War is planning a label switch in very near future and with Gold's new alliance witn Capitol the implications are probable that War will be included in the package at a later date... to be

THE POPE'S FAVORITE RECORD Sometime back movie star Cameron Mitchell was on a plane heading for Nashville to headline a benefit. During the three hour flight, Mitchell had an inspiration to write a poem about Jesus Christ, his simplicity of life and philosophy of love. By the time the plane landed, the poem was completed and he read it to the audience at the benefit. The poem was such a hit, that the actor began to nclude the reading in his many appearances throughout the world. Pope Paul heard of the poem through a Baptist Emissary to Rome and requested a copy. Mitchell enlisted the aid of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (300 voices!) to back him up on the narration and taped the poem for the Pope. The Pope loved the narration and sent Mitchell his Apostolic Blessing plus ordered two more copies -ere for his personal collection and two for the Vatican Archives. The Mormons have since asked Mitchell for 10,000 Copies of the narration for their congregation. H.L. Hunt, Jacqueline Onassis and Ethel Kennedy all have copies of the poem. Songwriter.producer Jo Saraceno heard of the tremendous response the narration has generated and is now rush -releasing it as a single with guitar background for Christmas. The record runs three minutes, fifty seconds and is entitled "Born Of A Simple Woman." Cameron told me he has natural pitch and can play piano by ear. He said "my Father was a Minister and was the fourth voice of a girl's quartet (my sisters) for the church! Who knows, may get into singing again! Watch out Telly Savalas!

"Roy Clark Month," which ABC Records has set for February, 1975, will be ushered in on television when the ABC /Dot artist (left) appears on "The Roy Clark Show" episode on "The Odd Couple." starriny Tony Randall (center) and Jack Klugman. The program will air on the ABC Television Network January 16 (8:30 p.m. EST), the first of the new Thursday airdates for the long -running series.

YIDDISH ROCKER BACK IN THE SCENE About a year and a half aqo you may remember a band by the name of Kinky Friedman and The Texas Jewboys on Vanguard Records. Some titles of his songs were 'Ride 'Em Jewboy." "Hign On Jesus" and "The Ballad Of Charles Whitman. "As one might expect, people took exception to'hese questionable titles and the acceptance of such material was less than enthusiastic. But Kinky is back again, this time with ABC Records. He stopped by the RaR offices to talk about his plans and the new direction his current band is taking.Said Kinky "we got thrown out of a lot of places especially in The South. was trying to inject some humor and satire into my music, and many times the response was overwhelming. The Grand Ole Opry loved us and the B'nai B'rith convention of seven states has adopted "Ride 'Em Jewboy" as their really am a "Texas Jewboy" having been born in Rio theme song. Duckworth, Texas. I've done a lot of different things (he was a frisbee instructor in Borneo for the Peace Corps!) and started out in music with a band called "King Arthur And The Carrots." am now headed into the "music," but plan to retain our bonus" (which is the schtick or satiric humor) to liven up the shows ABC has released Kinky'snewalbum and a single will be out sometime in January with a possible title of "They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore." Continued Kinky "I believe in being creatively curde, but we want to reach the 15 year olds along with the New York intellects. We will expand the word Jew to include everyone in the world!" He will be'on a countrywide promotion -concert tour to commence the early part of '75. ABC, in signing Kinky, feels that his new material is highly original and commercial and are planning an all-out promotion for the country -rock band. TURKEY GETS REPRIEVE FROM RECORD EXECS Frank Barron of Gibson and Stromberg was telling me the story of the "Turkey Shuffle" last week. It seems that someone sent a live turkey ( in a cage) to Casablanca Presiderit, Neil Bogar, Neil, being the softhearted person that he is, decided not to serve the gobbler up for Thanksgiving, but sent the "problem" onto to Bob Gibson of Gibson And Stromberg as same day that birthday present (Thanksgiving just happens to be Bob was born!) Bob evidently had made other plans for dinner and sent the grateful turkey onto the Los Angeles Zoo to join his cousins in a healthier climate...

Principals in the Capitol -Far Out pact (details in Candy Tusken's column) are standing from left: Al Coury, Senior Vice President, A &R /Promotion /Artist Development, Capitol Records, Inc. Jerry Goldstein, Far Out Management, Ltd. Steve Gold, President, Far Out Management, Ltd.; Bob Young, Vice President, Business Affairs, Capitol Records, Inc. Seated (I. to r.) Jimmy Witherspoon; Eric Burdon; Bhaskar Menon, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Capitol Records, Inc.

RECO RDS RECORD INDUSTRY NOTES Gm/is/HEW /rim/ pugs /h MGM Records and Carol Douglas on MidlandRecords were roommates. After some checking it turns out that although they don't share the same pad, they do share the same manager: Jay Ellis in New York. The roomie rumor began because Carol and Gloria stayed at the Holiday Inn in New York together. They also flew out on the same plane to the West Coast last week with both taping The Midnight Special. Gloria went on to tape American Bandstand and Carole granted an interview with Diamond P Productions fornational syndication. The two then flew back to New York together last Tuesday. The two singers are true "soul" sisters. background wise. Both owe their current hut records (Gloria's "Never Can Say Goodbye" and Carol's "Doctor's Orders ") to disco action in New York where the songs broke out. Both have been performing and singing in and around New York for years (Carol has been singing for the past eleven years and Gloria for the past three.) Bothhave done theatre work in the Big Apple and the two have had aspirations to be recording "stars" since they ..Jere children

Carol becamea fan of Gloria's when she heard thesingle"Honey Bee" which Carol bought, but the two didn't meet until both signed with Ellis. Gloria's single was written by a friend of hers, Clifton Davis, who is currently appearing in the TV series "That's My Mama." Said Gìons. l always love the song by the Jackson Five, but I felt the time was right for a woman's version of it." Carol has had two previous singles out, but this is her first hit and also marks the first big record for Midland Records. which was lust formed a few months ago by record executive Bob Reno. The trip to the West Coast was Carol's first plane ride and she was completely thrilled by all the attention and excitement The two singers found a limos ne waiting for them upon their arrivai in Los Angeles, but Carol was not impressed. She explained "My dad was a mortician an I got very used to l mosines!" The two singers are now back home; Carol lives in Brooklyn and Gloria lives in Manhattan, but they remain close friends and co- worKers. N E WS B NOTES Three Dog Night have resigned with ABC Records witn the iontract's lengtn and terms a well -kept secret at this point... More ABC news: former Famous Music President Tony Martell has been appointed to the new position of Vice President of East Coast C,erations and Special Marketing.. Mike Ochs, previously with Shelter and Columba, is the label's new National Director of Press and Public Information NEW RELEASES: Marvin Gaye's band backs uo Johnny Rivers on his new Atlantic single, "Get It Up For Love" (and you can already imagine what America's jocks will be doing with that title!) New Bad Company single due this week. It'll be the much -requested "Mov in' On" from their album... UA is releasing both the sound track from the him "Lenny" and a three -record "Lenny Bruce Live At Carnegie Hall" set ... To no one's surprise, Billy Swan has gone gold with "I Can Help. "...

The mild -mannered young man above is Kinky Friedman, who stopped by our offices to talk to Candy Tusken last week. See

RENO, K000- Omaha; CHARLIE RUSSELL, KHEY-E1 Paso; MARY SULLIVAN. KRMD- Shreveport; BUD MILLER a BILL JAMES, KSPO. Spokeane; JAY PRICE. KHOS- Tucson ; MAX and GARDENER, KKYX-San Antonio. We'll have more next week, as the R&R Country get it together for 1975 Congrats to KENR, Houston and Program Director. RIC LIBBY and Music Director, BRUCE NELSON for their awards at the recent Gavin Convention in Kansas City. Also, to BOB YOUNG L WMC, Memphis as the Gavin Station of the Year winner and to LARRY BAUNACH, Vice President of ABC -DOT Records, the Gavin Country Promo man of the year... Larry was just here last week and told me DOT just purchased the

master of FREDDY FENDER'$ vesion of "Before the Next Teardrop Falls." Freddie is a Chicano who has recut this tune in the Johnny Rodriguez -style, 'h Spanish and V English. Fender is another Houston based artist to be discovered because of strong reaction to the cut in Houston. BRUCE NELSON tells me this Is the 10th master this year to be picked up by a major label... THE CHARLIE MC COY MUSIC MACHINE? This is the artist credit on the MONUMENT Christmas relase, "Christmas Cheer." TEX DAVIS told me, THE MC COY MUSIC MACHINE is Charlie using his multiple talents on EVERY track. All the music and voices on the record are Charlie's... From the "Oops, I- goofed again for the first time Department:" JACK DANIELS, News Director of KKAR, Pomona and BILL JAMES of KSPO, Spokane caught my mention of the FLEETWOODS having the original version of "Tragedy." Their version was a top hit in 1961, BUT THOMAS WAYNE had the original out March of 1959 on FERNWOOD records. KBOX, Dallas is having a "Santa's Bag" contest, giving away over $3,000 in prizes. Listeners call in and can take the first, second or third prize mentioned on-the-air. Once they give up one or two, they can't go back and take the prizes they gave up... PLAYBOY records just released the debut album of BARBI BENTON entitled "Barbi Doll." The album was produced by EDDIE KILROY in Nashville. Musicians include such notables as JOHNNY GIMBLE, BOBBY DYSON, DAVE KIRBYand BOBBY THOMPSON. PLAYBOY had one of their "Bunnys" deliver the L.P. to me and show me a thing or two. (Guess PLAYBOY felt it was one way to keep me "abreast" of their

product.)... RON BARBER, News Director of KZON in Santa Maria is looking for a bigger market to work. If you need help call e05. 922.2181... WMAO in Chicago needs service on country product from ALL labels. Lee

Jack Pride, Natl. Country Promotion for Mercury Records invites all stations to win the Lester "Roadhog" Moran Bus (above). Hen's how: Just send to the "Roadhog" a letter in SO words or less telling him why you would want his bus. Send all entire to Later "Roadhog" Moran, coo Mercury Records, 1512 Hawkins St., Nashville, Tennaee, 37203. All entries must be on station letterhead, and postmarked no later than December 31, 974. Lester Moran will judge the letters and all entries become the property of the "Hog." The winner of the contest, in order to receive the bus, must--at his own expense -pick up same in Staunton, Va., "as is" without any expressed or implied warranties as to condition, fitness, or purpose for which it is intended. In fact, there is no motor in the bus.

my 'Capitol product (Charlie Walker and Stoney Edwards.) But I'm like a kid with a new toy about my freedom to work on my own time in my syndicated radio show "Inside Nashville," a special radio project which will surface shortly to become (I think) a giant step for Country radio. Bob Best, Washington D.C. enterpreneur- promoter, lobbyist booker has a project I hope to participate in TV -wise, custom work for special talents I believe in, and doing some special my promotion own on independently- produced artists' sessions. Again, thanks for asking. Special thanks to Charlie Douglas (WWL), Jim West (T.M. Productions-Dallas), John Denny Paul Wyatt (Cedarwood), (Hermitage Music Publishing. Nashville), Audie Ashworth, Bob Wilson (R&R), my wife, and God! Charlie McCoy's wife Susan and her sister Jerrie McCluskey -

Thanks for many good wishes re: Biff leaving Capitol. It was a warm association. Frank Jones is one of the special people in our business. Bill Williams' credits speak eloquently of his ability and productivity. look forward to working with them in promotion

"Rivergate Flower World" ... Four music TV specials will be filmed here in opened

January (two country, two rock) for "In Concert" on ABC -TV. They'll be done at the Opry House. No guests or air dates have been publicly discussed as yet, but BC people were here last week and this week casing the Opry House. Interestingly, "In Concert" is not seen in Nashville currently, but WNGE, local ABC affiliate says they'll run these specials. (That's sweet)... Don Kirshner produces the series... Bill Walker went to court to get his share (and then some) of the Donna Fargo giants from her big year. Bill was, according to Stan

Silver, Donna's husband manager, the arranger-director on the session; Bill contended he was the co- producer, at least... Henry Hurt, head of the local fooice of N.Y. publisher Chappel Music, last week named VicePresident of that firm, sign of success in his Nashville job... that -

BRUCE NELSON -KENR

KENR-Houston's Music Director and 3-7 p.m. personality has just been named Music Director of the Year at the recent Bill Gavin Convention. Prior to coming to KENR, Bruce was PD at WPLO- Atlanta, WUBECincimatti, and WMIL- Milwaukee. Sherwood says he needs oldies of the 60's and 70's. JACK RENO at k000in Omaha needs service on New and Old product, greatest hits L.P.'s, etc. Jack's number is 402.556.6700... MOON MULLINS starts his new

chores at KSON, San Diego this week. CHUCK WHEELER, one of

KAYSON's jocks, said: "San Diego

was STREAKED this year and now it is good to know it soon will be MOONED." (No butts about it.) ...

Moscow Russian musical tow Ernie Ford and Opryland company took this Fall shows for sure on January 9; will be called "Tennessee Ernie's Nashville Moscoe Express "... Roy Clark is taking his longest vacation in four years, from now

till January, with

his wife Barbara, in Florida. Good for him! ... that settlement Bill Walker got on the "Happiest Girl" session pleased him more for the principle, he said, thar Lash (estimates range up to

560,000)... didja see Charlie Walker, Darrell Roya's assistant coach" for the Thanksgiving traditional between Texas and Texas A&M. He sat on the bench

with hisold friend Darrell.Charlie asked Darrell before the game if he should get a photographer to come down and take some pictures of him on the bench... P.S. Texas stole a bowl bid away from A&M with a whopping win..

Charley Pride will sing with Oral Roberts on his Christmas special this year... It's finally happening! When Don Gibson first recorded it in '62 I said it would be a giant standard Pop Country hit song. Ronnie Milsap is making my prediction come true .. the song unquestioned is "Legend In My Time" ... Time Magazine's article about Merle Haggard dubbed him "King of Country Music." Did he receive congratulation from Roy Acuff? ... Tommy Cash's first session for Elektra with producer Pete Drake adds another name to the Drake roster. -

Bill Monroe celebrated his 35th year at the Grand Old ... Minnie Pearl talked yesterday at Richland Country Club, the subject "Christmas at Grinder's Switch," not co- incidentally the name of a book of hers published some years ago. Minnie is in fact big in civic circles in Nashville as Mrs. Henry Cannon. She told me, if a country star had fallen out the tenth floor window at the old Andrew Jackson hotel in 1942, it wouldn't have even gotten in the paper, much less on the front page. Yep, times have changed!

BY MIKE KASABO

Belated congratulations to all the Bill Gavin Award winners. I especially like ... Dean Tyler -WI P Program Director Of The Year, Stan Spero-KMPC Station Manager Of The Year, LaVerne Drake KNBR Music Director Of The Year, Gary OwensKMPC Disc Jockey Of The Year, WIP -Station Of The Year, KHOW-Bill Gavin Personal Award. Bill Rhodes -KMEN running a "Christmas Card Designing" contest. Listeners simply send in an original Christmas card design. Jack Popejoy, Program Director KI15, has created "The Twelve Days Of Christmas" contest. Designed to give away 78 major presents. Total value of the prizes exceeds $17,000! Plus a free electrocardiogram for members of KITS management. Barry Manilow jumped into the top slot this week, racing past Helen Reddy and Neil Sedaka which are both still strong. Gloria proving to be a top Gaynor among the rest of the hottest. Newer side showing strenght ... Paul McCartney's "Sally G," Carol Douglas' "Doctor's Orders," Michael Holm's "When A Child Is Born" showing giant strength on the phones at KITS, K101, WIP. Charlie Martin KHOW reports hot action already on the Jack Jones single. !

KNBR -San Francisco introduced their great new T-Shirts at a special "KNBR T Party," attended by 2000 listeners. In photo above, Carter B. Smith checks out the T -Shirt of famed tattoo artist Lyle Tuttle, whose shirt is a replica of his body art! (Have we finally found "the Ultimate T-Shirt? ")

After a relatively show start, "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" from Elton John is now reflecting the wide acceptance he's used to. AI Martino's "To The Door Of The Sun" getting strong reaction from WIP. Roy Rogers'" Hoppy, Gene & Me" proving to_be a pleasant surprise. Many stations are reporting solid action in just a few short weeks. Marilyn Sellars' "He's Gone" getting good play ...not to be outdone, Charlie Allan WGN's resident genius, put the record on last week... Don Smith WSM reports preferred listener reaction to the album version of the Righteous Bros. "Dream On." Station has logged a goodly number of phone calls to that effect. R&R WITH R &R THIS WEEKEND.

Jose's "Chico" LS TV's Numero Uno. Jose Felicianó s new two-sided single, "Chico And The Man" and "Hard Times In El Barrio;' are the original versions seen and heard on the top rated show on television. This kind of exposure is a sure-fire headstart. And both songs are on Jose's latest album,'And The Feeling's Good."
