You’re a Song to Me by Markus Detterbeck Markus Detterbeck’s sensitively composed pop ballad for choir is an expressive declaration of love in a-cappella style. A piece that charms and delights and quite rightly reaches its climax in the words: “How can I keep from singing this song?”

Choral collection – Sing, Africa, Sing Markus Detterbeck

Sing Africa, Sing 9 African songs for mixed choir SATB a cappella Sing Africa, Sing provides a whole diversity of insights into the great breadth of African choral music. This collection of choral settings from the experienced hand of Markus Detterbeck ranges from songs of welcome through lullabies to religious inspirationals and politically motivated freedom songs. In addition to the language of the originals, every song has been provided with singable English lyrics. The appendix contains warm-ups, guides to pronunciation for each of the titles. Whether performed in concerts or in religious services, these lively and rhythmic choral songs are always guaranteed to win the enthusiasm of the audience. Contents: Mamaliye (Sing Africa, sing) – Molweni (Let’s say hello) – Sesithi bonga (Let us sing bonga) – Thina singu (Let us be the burning fire) – Thula sizwe (Any day now) – Revival – Thula mtwana wami (African lullaby) – Hamba kahle (Farewell) – Freedom is coming

Makwaya

South African Choral Music Song, Contest and the Formation of Identity by Markus Detterbeck For the first time, this paper presents the experts with a comprehensive representation of Makwaya, a vibrant tradition for mixed choruses of the South African middle class that originated in school choirs. In order to track the varied history of the roots existing in the mission schools of the 19th century to today’s great choral competitions, the author conducted extensive research of archive material and carried out numerous interviews. In addition, as a singer and choral director he was able to gain vital experience in the choral pedagogy domain. As a consequence, this volume imparts many-faceted insights in the history and the present situation of Makwaya. The book offers: • an examination of South African choral traditions and their roots • a documentation of topical choral competitions in South Africa • numerous illustrations and note examples The CD-ROM offers: • more than 80 minutes of audio material (field recordings, interviews, original recordings) • more than 40 minutes of video material (field recordings)

Mah-nah-mah-na

Teddy Kalanda Harrison, arr. by Markus Detterbeck

Piero Umiliani, arr. by Markus Detterbeck

This rousing African pop song was composed by the Kenyan musician Teddy Lalanda Harrison who recorded the song in 1980 with his band “Them Mushrooms”. The song, written in the “Benga” tradition – dance music from East Africa quickly became popular in Kenya and even made the European hit parades. Covered later by such well known musicians as Boney M., this is a groovy, laid back song along the lines of “hakuna matata” (no problem) – now in a choral arrangement by Markus Detterbeck.

Jubilate – Praise the Lord by Markus Detterbeck

Based on a call-response structure, Markus Detterbeck has developed a dialogue between soloist and choir which is characterized by rhythmic drive. A dynamic mid-section provides a musical contrast before a return to the rhythmic motifs of the beginning progressively intensifies the piece. Elements of Afro-American music are skilfully combined with a polyphonically imitative phraseology. A powerful coda brings to a close this effective composition for religious services and concerts.

 SATB and Solo – HI - C6261

With its snappy opening motif, the song Mah-na-mah-na from the ”Muppet Show“ became a highly successful hit. In this arrangement, Markus Detterbeck has taken up the musical comic effect and expanded the piece by punchy use of motifs from well-known songs.

This song numbers among the most popular of Irish folk songs, and its lyrics are derived from the great Irish poet William Butler Yeats. Markus Detterbeck has composed a moving arrangement of the piece, skilfully incorporating the typical Irish sounds of the bagpipe drone. It can be sung a cappella or with accompaniment.
