BRIEFLY Benchmark in generosity Kihikihi Kindergarten could be nurturing builders and handy men and women of the future thanks to Te Awamutu’s Benchmark Building Supplies. The kindergarten approached the timber and hardware supplies store about whether something could be done to repair a large wooden table. The Benchmark team decided they could do better than that. They collected the table, replaced the top and repaired the vices attached to it. For good measure, with support from suppliers, they threw in some small saws, screwdrivers, sanding blocks, levels and safety glasses, as well as nails, staples and screws. What a great ‘team’ effort!

Fishing chops Next month sees the introduction of the West Coast recreational bag limit, from 15 snapper to 10. The new limit in the area officially known as Snapper 8 includes Kawhia and Raglan harbours in an area from North Cape to Tiruru Point (just south of Kawhia) from March 1. New Ministry of Fisheries pamphlets, detailing the reduction and other recently introduced changes to fisheries rules, are now available in most sporting goods, fishing equipment and bait stores. Members of the public can have the pamphlets sent direct to their home or work by phoning 0800 4 RULES (0800 478537). For more information see the website www.fishing.govt.nz/ recreational

By Dean Taylor At 44-years-old and with four children Gina Bisset is not ready to die. The Plunket nurse and solo mother has put her home on the line to pay for treatment that gives her a second chance because she believes she owes it to her children. Mrs Bisset found out a year ago she had breast cancer, one of 30% of sufferers with the aggressive HER2 positive forms. Despite chemotherapy, followed by surgery, more chemotherapy then radiation therapy, Mrs Bisset was told there was a 70% chance she would die within three years. “I thought about my children, and thought about how I felt when my mother died when I was a grown, married woman of 26, and decided I needed to live,” she says. Mrs Bisset investigated a treatment called Herceptin, which had been trialled and shown to be highly successful at treating HER2. Unfortunately she found the drug was not available under our health system until it is basically ‘too late’ for the patient. Mrs Bisset wanted to improve her chances of living, so she decided to go private at a cost of $105,000. She is receiving the treatment every three weeks for a year through Palmerston North’s private Aorangi Hospital. She often drives down on the Monday, has the half-an-hour treatment, then drives home. Sometimes she flies, and plans to do so more often now that there is the direct flight from Hamilton back on service. The drug now gives her a 65% chance of living, and even if it just doubles her life expectancy, Mrs Bisset says that gives her hope that a cure may be developed in the interim.

She says the drug also has little or no side effects, and doesn’t make you sick while undergoing the course. In contrast, like many undergoing chemotherapy, Mrs Bisset was too ill to work, and at times felt just getting out of bed was beyond her. Mrs Bisset is annoyed the drug is not available via the public health system, saying all the evidence shows it works and provides a better quality of life. She is also annoyed that she has to have her drug imported and pay her oncologist to work privately, but the Government is still charging her $13,000 GST. She plans to subdivide a piece of land off her section and sell her house to fund the treatment. Mrs Bisset knows that now that she is only back working part time, and has cancer, she is not likely to be able to get a mortgage to build again, but is hopeful there will be a way in the future to have her own home again. She says throughout the ordeal her two teenage daughters at home, and two older boys living in Whangarei near her exhusband have been marvellous. Friends, colleagues and The Church at Te Awamutu have all rallied to support and assist Mrs Bisset and her family. Oncology nurse Cathy McBride - an old friend of Mrs Bisset’s from nursing school - has taken the process a step further and organised a public appeal and fundraising concert. The concert is planned for Te Awamutu Memorial Park on Sunday, March 26. People wishing to make a donation can deposit it to The Georgina Fund at any Westpac Bank branch. To assist with, or perform at the concert, or help in any other way, contact Mrs McBride (027 4047232).

Council moving to identify ‘dangerous’ buildings Recent 75-year commemorations for the Hawke’s Bay earthquake temporarily raised the national consciousness of such natural disasters again temporarily. But Waipa District Council is working on a permanent policy to ensure earthquake-prone buildings in the district are identified and public risk minimised, where necessary through structural changes.

Council’s policy committee last week received a report on proposed draft policies on earthquake-prone and dangerous and insanitary buildings. Council must publicly notify and adopt policies before May 30, in accordance with the Building Act 2004. Submissions will be accepted until March 20. The proposed policies are based on Council’s past practice and

appearance did not necessarily reflect a building’s internal condition. “For this reason Council is reliant upon such sources as building occupants, neighbours, police, fire service and other agencies to provide information that a building is potentially dangerous or insanitary.” The committee confirmed the draft policies and approved their release for public consultation.

modified in accordance with the requirements of the act, with the intention that the risk to the public from these types of buildings is progressively reduced. Council will need to work with owners in compiling a list of potentially earthquake-prone buildings. Ross McNeil, group manager policy and strategy, said identification of dangerous and insanitary buildings was difficult, as external

The current attention being paid to enforcing speed limits in the vicinity of schools is a step in the right direction, but what a pathetically small one! It seems that, when some powerful law change is needed in New Zealand we tend to retreat and enforce a gentler version! My granddaughter attends Wirreanda Public School in Medowie, near Newcastle, NSW. On the roadway well clear of the school, there are large yellow 40kph signs. Nearer the school are large signs saying ‘40kph speed limit from 8.30 am

to 4pm’. The locals tell me that this speed limit is rigorously enforced. Her school bus carries another large sign on the back reminding motorists that there is a 40kph limit in overtaking the bus and this is reinforced with flashing orange lights. Surely we could do the same here! Why not, I wonder. What would it take to follow the example of our Australian neighbours? In Te Awamutu most of our schools are situated on busy streets. However, not one of them is on a

Once again, I see Stephen Lee being pilloried by your readers. But it is interesting to note that four out of the five published letter writers in Thursday’s Courier, were prompted into action by Stephen’s challenges. Now as much as Stephen occasionally gets a bee in his bonnet (hazards of his vocation), he sure rouses the plebeians from their slumbers. At this stage I would score Stephen four, the rest nil. Andre Van Nistelrooy talks of turning on his TV at any time and watching 10 and 12 year old street prostitutes. I don’t know what porn channel he’s watching but I certainly can’t get it. Tui Pearson feels that “corruption, destruction, murder and theft …. is mankind’s unfortunate inherent condition.” Phew!

That’s heavy stuff. I can only conclude that her view must be coloured by the company she keeps. It just goes to show, we don’t realise how the other half live. And, without fact or reasoned argument, B. P. Morrison dismisses Stephen’s views as “next day’s fish and chips wrapper.” Sorry, the takeaways only use broadsheet papers. Finally David Armitage sallies forth with an impressive fire and brimstone salvo only to waft off into some ethereal hinterland known only to him. I’m glad I stick to coffee. For all that though it gives me heart that there is the faintest evidence of life out there. I look forward to the ongoing contest. ROGER CLARKE

State Highway but on a Council-owned street. So, would it not be possible for our Council to take a bold step and create ‘school zones’ on the New South Wales model outside the schools on the streets which we, through the Council own? I am sure that it would be a great relief to parents, teachers and even drivers to know that with clearly designated school zones and with the co-operation of the bus contractors, attention-getting signage on school buses, our children’s live could be made much safer. Waipa a winner Members of Waipa District Council are to be congratulated on their vision in supporting a community leadership model for children’s art worldwide via the Waipa Children’s Art House. This work will be showcased at the World Congress on Art in a presentation in Portugal in March. All Waipa’s creative children aged 7-17 have an opportunity to take part in the largest world wide children’s art competition hosted by Otorohanga Rotary in July. During this time the Waipa galleries will be on showcase. Entry forms are available via Te Awamutu and Kihikihi Rotary Clubs, or at Waipa Children’s Art House. To build safer communities it is not necessarily more police that is needed, it is policies and projects which support youth to be creative, busy and happy and self actualised in our communities. It is also in acknowledging the countless volunteers, teachers and public, who have contributed to the growth of this model and focussed on positive creative expression, the culture of peace and the development of our children as appreciated contributors to our community. It is great to see Waipa working hard and appreciating that our children fly before us and thrive on our encouragement. Our combined efforts to provide this valued and sacred house of childhood creativity, is bearing great fruit. Waipa can stand proud in this leadership. SHONA HAMMOND BOYS QSM National Director

Butterflies ‘bloom’ in Time to speak up against unused Puahue patch seabed mining: KASM By Grant Johnston Kiwis Against Seabed Mining (KASM) is encouraging everyone who cares about the marine environment to make their opposition to seabed mining known. The Government released a Draft Replacement Mineral Programme for Minerals and Coal for a 40 working day statutory public and iwi consultation process on December 21. “Essentially this is an opportunity for the public of New Zealand to have a say in what gets mined or is available to be mined in and around New Zealand,” says KASM spokesman Stephen Frew. The deadline for submissions is March 3, but submissions can be as simple as a few lines. Submissions (including the author’s name and address and how they feel they will be affected by seabed mining) can be mailed to: Manager, Petro-

leum and Minerals Policy, PO Box 1473, Wellington. KASM is a non profit community organisation started in Raglan, with branches in Taranaki and Piha and members throughout the country. The group has been raising awareness of the current proposals to explore and/or prospect on the New Zealand seabed and possible consequences. Mr Frew says the growing scarcity of global mineral reserves has pushed prices up (iron ore up 70% in eight months) and made it economic to mine the ocean floor. When the Foreshore and Seabed issue arose in 2003/4 (making the seabed ‘Crown owned’ four companies registered in New Zealand for mining prospecting permits. These permits cover a combined total of 137,800 square kilometres (34 million acres,

or half New Zealand’s land area), with the Government receiving $2.25 per square kilometre per year. Kiwis Against Seabed Mining’s concerns include: Natural replenishment of beaches will be interrupted and decimated. Much of the mining area is a marine protection area for Maui and Hectors Dolphins. Mining the coast will disturb the breeding pattern of fish species already in decline, endangering recreational and commercial fishing. The sediment plume from mining may extinguish the spat breeding grounds for New Zealand’s unique green-lipped mussel industry. Surf breaks of international renown could be threatened. For more information about KASM and seabed mining, see the website www.blacksands.org.nz

With under two weeks to go, the countdown is on to find New Zealand’s most enthusiastic cricket fan. Samsung and the Blackcaps have been searching for the Samsung Cricket Fan of the Year and more than 100 cricket supporters have come forward to share their tales of dedication. “We have been amazed by the stories of passion, loyalty and devotion received over the course of the search,” says Jean-Philippe Diel, Head of Marketing, Samsung New Zealand. “The tale of one young man was especially inspiring. He walked 10 kilometres and caught three buses to a cricket game, only to watch one ball being bowled before play was cancelled due to rain. However, he believed it was worth it. That’s the kind of passion we are looking for.” Other entries of note have been New Zealanders following the Blackcaps around the world, those who share their love for the game through

coaching others and one who has been a loyal New Zealand cricket fan since 1932. The search for the Samsung Cricket Fan of the Year is running in six regions throughout New Zealand including Northern Districts. The six regional winners will receive the latest in technology with the Samsung Miniket (an all-in-one video camera, MP3 player, web camera, digital camera, voice recorder and data storage device). The national winner will take home a stateof-the-art Samsung entertainment system that includes a Plasma TV, camcorder, DVD recorder and home theatre, valued at $10,000 (RRP). Samsung is urging fans to get in quick and describe in 100 words why they deserve to be the Samsung Cricket Fan of the Year. Send your 100 words to Samsung Cricket Fan of the Year, PO Box 24 144 or email [email protected] .nz by 5pm, Friday, March 3.

“As soon as you walk in the door at the Roadshow, you’ll instantly feel like you’re already on holiday,” Miss Cairns says. “We have organised a traditional lei welcome, samples of traditional food and the fragrance of frangipani filling the air, so all you’ll need do is close your eyes and imagine. ” Visitors to the Roadshow will get the chance to meet Moses who is part of a new butler (Talai) service at the five star Outrigger on the Lagoon, Fiji. The Roadshow will provide visitors with access to deals that are exclusive to House of Travel and available only on the night. There is also the chance to win a holiday for two with flights on Air New Zealand and five nights accommodation at the five star Outrigger on the Lagoon, Fiji. House of Travel’s South Pacific Roadshow will be at Rydges Le Grand from 5-8pm. Admission is free. Te Awamutu House of Travel representatives in attendance will be Darryl Turton, Lynne Fenwick, Nikki Yuile and Tania King. Phone 871 8131 for more information or to enquire about the bus.

With the South Pacific fast becoming New Zealand’s favourite holiday destination, House of Travel has organised a South Pacific Roadshow to travel throughout the North Island. It will be in Hamilton this Thursday night and Te Awamutu House of Travel is organising a free bus for interested people to attend. Owner-operator Betty Wakelin says plenty of Te Awamutu people are making the South Pacific their holiday destination - around 500 out of House of Travel’s Te Awamutu office alone last year. She says intending travellers hoping to travel in June or July need to be making their bookings now to get the best fares and to ensure availability. Hotel, resort and cruise representatives from all the major holiday destinations of the South Pacific will be on hand on Thursday night to advise on and answer any holiday questions. There will be specialists on board from Fiji, Samoa, Cook Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Tahiti. Lynda Cairns, South Pacific Product Manager for House of Travel advises there will be more than 25 specialists to dis-

HARCOURTS Te Awamutu could well have an enquiry from Cambodia if this photo is anything to go by. It was sent to us by Sue Hanna who is currently in Cambodia (along with Sue and Graham Taylor) on a two year mission. She says visitors from home often bring copies of the Te Awamutu Courier with them so they can catch up with news. She was interested to see a local rubbish collector, who spotted the paper, spend a considerable amount of time looking through it - especially the real estate inserts showing local properties. The Te Awamutu volunteers are almost a year into their visit and a more detailed report about their work will be featured in a future edition of the Courier.

Broadband to be made faster and cheaper Broadband is about to get faster for residential customers – and a lot cheaper for business customers. Telecom’s ISP Xtra is to launch new speeds and pricing on broadband services for both business and residential customers. All existing residential customers will be automatically upgraded to faster plans at no cost. The new plan line-up includes download speeds of up to 3.5 Megabits per second (Mbps) and three new services that offer an

increased upload speed of 512 Kilobits per second (Kbps). Existing residential plans will have their download speeds increased to maximum possible speeds of either 2 or 3.5 Mbps. Xtra will be progressively upgrading all current customers to the faster specifications for no change of price - and some plans will move to a lower price. A new entry level plan will also be introduced, and priced from $29.95 it will provide ‘a dollar a day broadband’ for people who want a basic broadband service.

But around the same time an opportunity also came up to buy Angelique. “I’ve always wanted to operate my own salon so I was delighted to take that option.” Mrs Bosher took over the Alexandra Street business late last year and is enjoying providing city styling with country hospitality. “The salon in Sydney had excellent customer service and that too will be my priority at Angelique.” The Te Awamutu salon offers a full range of cutting, colouring, perming and styling options. Mrs Bosher says the knowledge and experience she re-

ceived in Sydney has set in her good stead, but when it comes to fashions and trends, New Zealand is much on par with anywhere else. “Many people think New Zealand must be behind the rest of the world when it comes to fashions and styles, but in actual fact its not really very different.” Angelique has two other staff members - Kelly Higgins and Jenni Wheeler who works part time (Thursdays, Fridays). The salon uses and stocks Goldwell products - which includes shampoos, conditioners and a range of styling products Angelique is open Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm, with a late night Thursday (by appointment) and Saturday morning 9am - 12 noon (by appointment). Vanessa Bosher grew up in the Otorohanga area before heading to Australia 18 years ago. For much of that time she worked as a hair stylist in Sydney and loved the busy city salon. But a desire to bring up children in New Zealand saw her return with her Kiwi husband Michael (who is a French polisher of furniture) and their two children to settle on a property at Paterangi. They actually purchased the property in 2004, but it took them a little longer to finalise everything in Australia and make their return. “We were happy to find a lovely property here as we have family in this area, but we didn’t get everything completed in Australia until last year. “We are now loving the life-

Computer Aid has completed a major refurbishment and rebranding of its Sloane Street premises, designed to provide a better shopping environment for clients and a more efficient workshop area for technicians. Owner Tim Sullivan believes the new layout and design features reflect the professional and hi-tech nature of their business. It was made possible after the First Mobile Vodafone outlet in Alexandra Street was established as a standalone operation. The new design uses existing area, but with more thought to client and staff needs. From the automatic doors to the open hatch into the workshop, Computer Aid are putting clients first. Mr Sullivan says many clients walk in and out of the premises with a computer, either their own which requires servicing, or a new model so the automatic doors are appreciated. Manning the sales area is Sheryl Jellie. She says under the old design clients with problems with their computer would talk with her, and if she could not assist she would TECHNICIAN Robert Stewart (above) assembles one of Computer have to go and get a technician, and the conversation Aids own computer models while colleague Mike Dando (below) would be repeated. checks a client’s machine at the new workbench. The hatch means the client can now talk directly with the technician and advice given or a decision about servicing could be made. The open hatch also means technicians can keep an eye on the retail section of the store, and when Mrs Jellie is already busy with clients, they can assist. The overall result is a higher level of service. WORKSHOP MORE EFFICIENT The technicians’ area has been converted from a number of rooms into an open space, providing a long workbench with plenty of connection boxes for power, network and internet, plus several stand alone workstations for building and repairing computers. Commonly used parts and tools are all stored in one area of the new workshop, while less commonly needed items are in a nearby storeroom. Technicians Mike Dando and Robert Stewart say the layout and design features make their job more efficient. Not all repairs and service have to be carried out in the

COMPUTER AID SELLS COMPUTERS Mr Sullivan says when redesigning the retail section of the premises, one of the aims was to overcome the popular misconception that Computer Aid just fixed computers and sold peripherals. A central computer display centre firmly shows that Computer Aid retails a wide range of computers. Previously only a couple of desktop models and one laptop computer could be displayed working. Now three or four desktops and up to six laptops are working. Computer Aid retails two Pentium based computers manufactured on

site. The Authorised Intel Resellers use Intel processors and motherboards, and only the best other components, in generic computer cases to build these good valued machines. Clients can up-spec to order, and the technicians will also add extra components required and set the computer up for the client, including re-establishing the internet and email account and transferring documents and other data. Computer Aid also sells trusted brands of desktop and laptop computers, plus a full range of accessories and parts. Finance options are enhanced with the recent addition of Q Card, giving the choice of three finance providers. Q Card holders automatically receive three months interest free and there is no booking fee.

Young racer supports Hamilton street race Te Awamutu motor racing driver Nic Jordan is excited about the announcement of a Hamilton street race. The high-flying teenager hopes to one day race on a circuit in front of a home crowd. He is presently busy putting together a deal to race Formula 3 in Australia, and the Toyota Racing series in New Zealand next summer,. Having already raced with the V8 Supercars on two temporary circuits in Australia, he is excited about the prospect of the V8 show coming to the streets of Hamilton city. “We raced with the Super-

cars at the Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne last year, and with the Supercars and Champs Cars on the streets of Surfers Paradise the year before,” says Jordan. “The street meetings are so big. “It’s the first time I’ve raced in front of so many grandstands with so many people. “It’s going to be great for the whole Waikato.” Jordan, who won the Formula 3 Trophy class in Australia in 2004 with an unbeaten record of 12 wins from 12 starts, hopes the Toyota Racing

Series (TRS) cars will be on the programme for the Hamilton V8 Supercar race. Now the top single-seater racing series in New Zealand, the TRS cars would be a likely addition to the V8 Supercar programme, and if they are, then Jordan would be a starter. “There are so many people in the Waikato that help me with my racing that don’t get to see me competing because I’m overseas,” he says. “I would love to race at home on a street circuit in front of a local crowd. “That would be really neat.”

Four make Waikato Maori Anyone for Judo? Waikato Maori rugby coach Phil Coffin has included four Te Awamutu Sports players in a squad to prepare for a March tournament. They are loose forward Te Arakau Houston, halfback Matetu Atutahi, midfield back Ray Stowe and fullback Anthony Crowley. Waikato Maori will play Counties-Manukau Maori on Saturday as a lead-up to the Northern region Maori tournament to be hosted by Waikato at Tokoroa from March 3-5. Included in the training squad, coached by Coffin, Rhys Ellison and Kerry Eynon, are Waikato NPC players Marc Morunga and Ted Tauroa, along with King Country representatives Hone Wanden and

Terry White. The squad trained at Albert Park last night.

Forsman in wickets for Waikato Valley Hamish Forsman claimed career best figures for Waikato Valley of 426 off eight overs against the Bay of Plenty Development XI. Forsman’s efforts, however, could not prevent the Bay from winning by 84 runs. The left-arm spinner has been in excellent form for Te Awamutu Sports, claiming over 30 wickets at a cheap rate in the Waikato Valley club competition.

Judo could be just the sport you are looking for if you want to learn self defence. National under-73kg silver medallist Hamish Rees of Hamilton Judo Club is now living in Te Awamutu. The 24-year-old Waikeria Prison officer is keen to set up a judo club here. It will go ahead dependant on the amount of interest shown. Classes will be restricted to those aged six to 14 years at this stage. Rees instructed at Dannevirke Judo Club for three years, experiencing success at national age group level with a group of juniors. He hopes to gain his black belt this year. “Judo has plenty to offer, including self control, discipline, competitions, respect, self defence and fun,” says Rees. If you are interested in having a go, contact Rees on 027 3456114.

Natural Selection out for revenge

Natural Selection will be hoping to go one better than last when they meet G Force in the division one touch final at Albert Park, 6.45pm, on Friday. Ingham Honda, who will contest this year’s B grade final, upset Natural Selection last year. Prizes will be awarded to the first three teams in each division, along with the seven teams who won the grading rounds. Prizegiving commences at 8pm and teams must be in attendance to claim their prizes. Spokesperson, Joe Sprangers stresses that only players registered to your team can take the field for you. Any breach of this ruling on finals night will result in your team losing by default and missing out on any chance of a prize. Uniforms must be worn by all teams.

Can Dr Rothert inject life back into wrestling club?

REMINISCING: President of New Zealand Olympic Wrestling Union, Brian Stannett shows Dr Horst Rothert and his wife Inga photos of championship winning YMI wrestlers during Horst’s two stints 0520616AD as club coach in the 1990s.

By Colin Thorsen The arrival in town of Dr Horst Rothert and his wife Ingeborg could prove to be a godsend for the once famous Te Awamutu YMI Wrestling Club. Dr Rothert is arguably the finest professional coach to ever be imported by the club. In both his previous stints here (1996, 1998) Te Awamutu YMI went from strength to strength, taking out the national club championship. Te Awamutu College also won the national secondary schools’ Lloyd Woods Trophy both years.

Dr Rothert worked wonders with the club’s elite wrestlers, taking the likes of Aaron Quinlan, Tony Vincent, Jason Strawbridge and Brett Quinlan to national and Oceania titles. But those glory days are but a distant memory for a club that was national club champion for 10 consecutive years. Brian Stannett, president of New Zealand Olympic Wrestling Union, says the club’s current plight is simply because it has no coach or committee. “Last year we battled away with one dedicated parent, who trained six children twice weekly. “They performed well at the various championships for first year competitors. “I’m sure we can rekindle the enthusiasm back into both the club and College if we could score another coach and form a committee.” Dr Rothert intimated to Stannett that he may be able to fill the coaching void for six months next year. That was ‘music to the ears’ of Stannett, who has worked tirelessly over the past few years to prevent the club from going into recess. Stannett says, regardless of whether Dr Rothert commits himself to another coaching stint next year, the club is still looking for a dedicated coach. “We want someone to take on a three year plan to bring together again the youth of Te Awamutu and enjoy the experience. “Whoever takes up the position may get to coach alongside and learn from the master.” Rugby clubs, particularly Te Awamutu Sports, benefited from training under Dr Rothert in the 1990s, while ‘Inga’ Rothert was instrumental in forming a fitness class for the elderly at the YMI, and running exercises for people with disabilities. They are both certified physical education teachers. Dr Rothert is highly respected world wide both as a wrestler and coach. From 1949 to 1958 he was German junior champion in freestyle wrestling, four-times German senior vice champion (runner-up) in greco-roman and freestyle, medal winner at international tournaments and a national team member for four years. In 1994 he became

world veteran champion in Rome. He a former senior freestyle wrestling coach with the German Sports and Gymnastics Association (National Federation) in Berlin, and had active involvement in the development of freestyle wrestling in former East Germany. Wrestlers under his tuition claimed one first place, two seconds and a third at the 1970 European championships in Berlin. Included in the national team he coached were European and world champions. In 1991 he had a stint as national team coach in China, assisting the country’s preparations for the 1992 Olympics. As a result of his efforts, four Chinese wrestlers qualified for the Olympics - the first ever to do so. One of them placed seventh. His expertise is still highly sought after. He has just spent the past three months in Tonga, working for FILA, trying to get the country’s wrestling up and running. The King of Tonga took the opportunity to also get him to coach his army, navy and rugby players. Stannett says it is great to see FILA striving to develop wrestling in the Islands. “The more countries taking up wrestling in Oceania, the better for New Zealand as far as competition goes.” Stannett has a vested interest, being a member of the Oceania committee. It is interesting to note that wrestling is a 5000 year old sport, with 296 countries competing internationally. Oceania has 15 countries competing - Tonga is the latest addition. The Rotherts are in New Zealand for a month. “It’s paradise,” says Inga. They are presently holidaying in the South Island. On their return to Te Awamutu, they will be hosted by former chairperson of YMI Wrestling Club, Joginder Singh and his wife Jas. INVITATION The Singhs have organised a re-union dinner for Horst and Inga at the Old Bank on Friday, February 24 at 6.45pm. They would like as many people as possible, who have had any involvement with the Rotherts, to attend. If interested, phone Joginder on 872 7717.

Rosalie Hart and Vi Davy retained both their lives winning the women’s junior pairs at Kihikihi Bowling Club. The champion pairing beat singles champion Lyn Comins and Chris Watkinson 20-15 in the final. The men’s title went Ken Morriss and Larry Tremewan. They beat Ken Wells and Ken Hancock twice, 22-15 in the semi-final and 23-10 in the final.

Exciting croquet times The long-awaited construction of new clubrooms was a major talking point during the week-long annual tournament at Te Awamutu Croquet Club. None of the players seemed to care about the distraction of tradesmen working on the building site adjacent to the lawn they were playing on. “We’re just pleased to see work finally in progress. Our dream looks as though its finally going to come true,” says club stalwart Cath Erskine. “Members are hoping that the 125 square metre building will be completed before the end of the current season.” The new complex will include a lounge, kitchen and toilet block. Competition was keen, resulting in some close results in the Windsor Court Rest Home, Ohaupo, sponsored tournament. Countbacks were necessary to decide runnersup in both doubles events and one singles championship event.
