BRIEFLY Fundraising for crisis centre Te Awamutu Healing and Rape Crisis Centre is staging a garage sale at 91 Albert Park Drive this weekend and next weekend (August 12,19) to raise valuable funds. Further donated goods for the garage sales would be welcomed. Financial assistance from government bodies and trusts does not cover all costs, so support from local groups (such as Altrusa and Rosetown Lions) as well as individuals is much appreciated. The Healing and Rape Crisis centre offers free counselling and support to survivors of sexual abuse, as well as their friends, family and whanau.

Family focus The recent deaths of the Kahui twins has once again highlighted the fact that in comparison with the rest of the world, New Zealand’s culture of family violence is appalling Mayna Fletcher from Parentline, Hamilton will talk on some of the problems relating to this topic when she addresses Te Awamutu Continuing Education Group on August 16. It is an open meeting and anyone interested is invited to attend. See Public Notice for further details.

Kawhia callout The Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance responded to a callout at Kawhia over the weekend. A 34-year-old woman from Kihikihi had been discovered on the beach, reportedly the victim of an assault. She was treated at the scene before being flown, under the care of St John paramedics, to Waikato Hospital.

Courier copies Extra copies of the Te Awamutu Courier now cost 40c. The change has been necessitated because of the imminent removal of the 5c coin.

Lotto extras Te Awamutu Lotto outlets sold three winners of $1,001 in Saturday’s 1000th draw. Video Ezy and Lotto, Fresh Choice Lotto and Paper Plus each sold one of the celebration extra prizes.

Rookies face ‘full-on’ fire By Cathy Asplin If you met Debbie Neilson in the street and had to guess what she does as her contribution to the community, few would probably say ‘firefighter’. But that’s exactly what this 38-year-old solo parent is - one of three new recruits for the Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade. Ms Neilson says she has belonged to a number of voluntary organisations in the past and is a firm believer in giving back to the community. “I have been a St John volunteer and spent 15 years in a medical unit with the army. “I was doing first aid training with firefighters at other stations and when I began at Te Awamutu I ended up joining the fire service.” While she has been out on several calls since joining the local brigade, and completed breathing apparatus training in Rotorua on Saturday, nothing probably came close to her first real experience of a house fire on Sunday. The brigade was able to burn down a three bedroom wooden villa on Mandeno Street as a training exercise, thanks to a local property developer. Fires were started inside the house so that recruits could

smoke as it burns. That’s when our training kicks in. “I was certainly relying on the fact that firefighters all around New Zealand have been given the same training and have survived!” Training officer Mike Kimber says being able to burn the house as a exercise for new recruits provided a rare opportunity.

By Dean Taylor Friday night’s opening of ‘The Magic of Maungatautari... through the lens of wildlife photographer Phil Brown’ proved a fitting event to mark another milestone in the project. As part of the introductions and welcomes by trust and local body dignitaries, Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust CEO Jim Mylchreest announced the fencing of the mountain was all but complete.

He said the last piece of the fencing project was a short run around a paddock, then the mountain would be pest proofed. Speakers said the work of Phil Brown was an important aspect of the project, as his unique eye for detail and intimate knowledge of the mountain was proving a valuable asset. Mr Brown has discovered and recorded wildlife, fauna and flora previously thought not to exist on the mountain. Images from the collection of the Te

brigade received a number of calls. He would also like to send thanks to all of the people who provided furniture to use in the fire. “We actually had over 200 phone calls and couldn’t collect all of the items. We ended up using around 12 couches and 30 chairs, which was excellent, thank you.”

Viewing is open to the public from 10am to 4pm daily until Sunday, August 27. The opening also featured performances by Cambridge High School Kapa Haka and a specially produced dance/drama by Hora Hora School, plus the opening of the Night Forest Theatre which runs until this Friday.

“It allowed them to make sure they were using the right techniques and protecting themselves at the same time. “We had new recruits from Tirau, Katikati and Te Kuiti, join our local brigade for the exercise.” Mr Kimber says neighbours were notified of the fire, but as it could be seen for some distance the

“We don’t get the chance to do this very often. We were lucky to have the house donated to us by a developer. Although it is in town, there was plenty of open space around it for safety. “The exercise provided an excellent chance for trainees to see the development of a fire and then put their fire fighting skills into action.

We would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank Kihikihi Rugby Club’s 2001 coach Ronald Sargent, assistant coach Paul Crean and St Patrick’s principal Gareth Duncan. These three gentlemen inspired our son Wairua (Retimana-Clarke) with confidence, support and knowledge of rugby, teaching him the value of perserverance, passion, practice and more practice - and it has paid off. Wairua has been chosen to represent his school, Melbourne’s John Paul College and the State of Victoria in the Victorian Under 16 Schoolboys UK Rugby Tour in November. In the month long tour they will visit and play England, Ireland, UK, Sri Lanka and Dubai Under 16s. This will no doubt be the experience of a lifetime for all the boys. Tragic circumstances brought us to Australia. For those who know my brother Charles, he is well and so are we. Thanks and love to all our whanau and friends. Your health and fitness professionals The gym with everything!!

I wish to say thankyou to lady pensioner, Ann Young, who has delivered the Courier twice a week to 200 homes approximately for the past nine years in the area in which I live. Rain, hail or shine she was always on time. And I remember the day she stopped to ask me to have a look at her trolley wheels that were making a noise. I got the oil can out and gave them a good go over - ready to travel a few more hundred miles. Thanks Ann for your service, I hope the company you worked for gave you a golden handshake. RAYMOND RICHARDS

Nancy Jensen from Otorohanga Kiwihouse brought to life the hopes and the heartaches connected with captive breeding programmes when she spoke at the recent annual meeting of Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society. Mrs Jensen highlighted the work the Kiwihouse has done with kokako, and the importance of sharing information with others working in the same field. The Kiwihouse would welcome any new volunteers or society members to assist their operation. Any enquiries may be made directly to the Kiwihouse. During the evening, the mountain society recognised a number of groups and individuals who had provided valuable assistance during the year, including Pirongia Voluntary Rural Fire Force, Mt Pirongia Lions Club, Purekireki Marae iwi, Kauhanganui, Pirongia Darts Club, Sabina Owen, Ros Empson, Mac Bell, Peter and Shirley Kewish, Hilary Ramage, Waipa District Council, Environment Waikato and Trust Waikato. Special awards were also presented to the Department of Conservation, Sally Uerata and Nardene Berry. In her annual report, chairperson Clare St Pierre gave an update on the Mangakaraa Project where a baitstation grid has been set up over 250ha in Pirongia Forest Park and

access tracks cut. Pest population baseline monitoring has been completed and the society is now seeking funding for the initial stage of pest control which will target rats and possums. Mrs St Pierre also expressed the society’s appreciation for the support received from the community in acquiring a classroom block in 2005 for use as an environmental education centre. In the coming months, the society is assisting the University of Waikato with a magpie removal trial aimed at protecting tui and kereru. Dai Morgan from Biological Sciences is planning to control magpies around small bush remnants or other areas in a rural landscape that may attract tui and kereru. Previous research has shown that birds tend to avoid landing and foraging close to magpies compared to adjacent magpie-free areas. This small scale effect may have large impacts for species such as tui and kereru as they may have to travel quite a distance to find alternative suitable habitat. Please contact Dai Morgan (07 8384 466 extn. 8123 (office) 07 8295 895 (home) or 021 1150773 if you would be willing to participate in this trial, scheduled to take place from September to November. Ten to 15 sites are required, preferably close to large tracts of native forest.

While the misdemeanours of the minority may at times give today’s youth a bad name, the list of achievements of nominees for Waipa Youth Awards paints a vastly different picture. Te Awamutu’s Ian Vincent (17) was winner of the excellence award in the arts and culture section and merit award winner in the multi achievers category. Big year for theatre Te Awamutu Little Theatre’s success in the 2006 Waipa District Community Awards presents just another challenge for this small, but active, organisation. While planning is underway for the presentation at the national community awards final in March next year, back home ‘the show - as they say - must go on’. On Thursday night a four show season of Urban Vineyard’s interactive murder mystery ‘Exit - 2nd Banana’ opens. In October Te Awamutu Little Theatre stage their own production, the New Zealand premiere of the Canadian comedy/drama ‘A Year in the Death of Eddie Jester’. The cast of seven is currently in rehearsal with director Theo Van de Steeg, who is making his debut in Te Awamutu. He says the theatre group is trying to shy away from the obvious with its choice of material, and ‘A Year in the Death of Eddie Jester’ is a great example - a serious play based on a funny idea. ‘Exit - 2nd Banana’ fits perfectly. The pick-a-path murder mystery is directed by David Foote who is also responsible for the idea along with actor Ross McLeod who plays Constable Jack Valance. Set in a circus in small town 1930’s New Zealand, the working play was devised by the

Award a huge surprise Little Theatre was stunned at its supreme award win at this year’s Waipa District Community Awards. The theatre group says they did not think they had done anything that remarkable, and compared to some of the large organisations, did not think their little band of volunteers would stack up at an awards event. But as the winners, the group is taking the responsibility of representing Waipa very seriously. Planning for next year’s final is underway, with award winning media art student Jordon Roche volunteer-

Little Theatre is also paying a huge tribute to De Plankeniers, the group with a 15 year history of touring Dutch language plays which took a chance on promoting ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ tour. It was their first English language play. They say the group and the Dutch community got right behind the production, from technical advice to loaning authentic props to using their networks to ensure good audiences.

Students support SPCA

TE AWAMUTU SPCA member Dianne Gray (assisted by her dog) accepts the boxes, bags and 220069AD cans of pet food from members of the Te Awamutu Intermediate student council. By Cathy Asplin With around 50 cats and several dogs to feed, it’s no surprise that the Te Awamutu SPCA shelter uses an enormous amount of pet food every week. That food supply was given a welcome boost by the Te Awamutu Intermediate last week, as students delivered the ‘proceeds’ of their school disco. Head student Ariana CableDixon says their school disco is usually used to benefit a group in the community. “We had noticed that the SPCA was in need of some help, so we decided to charge $3 or a donation of pet food as entry to

our recent disco. “The money we collected was then turned into pet food as well, so we had a good collection to deliver to the SPCA.” Spokesperson Dianne Gray says she was pleased to get the donation from the students. “It’s lovely to have this sort of support without even asking. “It’s commendable that the students decided to do it themselves and we challenge other schools to see if they can also provide some help.” DESEXING IMPORTANT Mrs Gray says desexing of pets is essential to keep down the number of unwanted ani-

mals in our community . She warns that it is crucial to get this done now as the season is starting early this year. VE Vets veterinarian Andrew Maunsell says kittens as young as five months old can be on heat. “As the days are getting longer this triggers the animals to come on heat. I encourage owners to have their cats spayed now to avoid large numbers of unwanted kittens later in the year. “It’s not uncommon for over 100 kittens to be abandoned at the local SPCA.”

Where did that horrible smell come from? Wherever you went around town last week, people were commenting about the awful smell. While some thought the Kinleith mill was the problem, it was actually much closer to home. The smell was the result of temporary overloading of the effluent treatment system at Fonterra’s Te Awamutu site, during the commissioning of

new driers. Operations manager Craig Betty sends apologies to residents. “While incidents of this nature are rare, we are constantly reviewing our systems to ensure Fonterra Te Awamutu maintains its good record in meeting its environmental responsibilities.”

She reflected on a number of fundraising activities and a variety of activities that were undertaken. A highlight was the awarding of Lions’ top honour to long serving member Pam Barclay. She received Life membership of the Lloyd Morgan Charitable Trust in recognition of her significant contribution to Lionism. Events throughout the year included a successful fashion parade which raised $1500 towards a viewing tower for the Maungatautari Ecological Island and the premiere screening of the film ‘Family Stone’ at The Regent, a generous donation by owner Allan Webb resulting in $1000 being raised for the Westpac Air Ambulance. Throughout the year catering, cake stalls and raffles also contributed about $5000 to the fundraising, most of which was distributed amongst 19 worthwhile causes. Shellfish warning issued on west coast The Health Protection Unit’s of Taranaki District Health Board and Waikato District Health Board have issued a Public Health warning advising people not to collect or consume shellfish from Kawhia (not including Kawhia Harbour) in the Waikato to Oakura Beach in Taranaki. Routine tests on shellfish samples taken from Mohakatino this week have shown levels of Paralytic Shell-

fish Poisoning (PSP) at 0.88 mg/kg. This level is above the Ministry of Health’s safe limit of 0.80 mg/kg and anyone eating these toxic shellfish is potentially at risk of illness. Kina, mussels, toheroa, pipis, tuatua, oysters and cockles in the affected area should not be eaten. Cooking shellfish does not remove the toxin. New physiotherapy practice in revamped premises Paul Taitoko and Gayleen Packer have taken over the practice formerly known as Te Awamutu Physiotherapy (based in the Te Awamutu Medical Centre building). Now known as CAPE Physio, the couple have expanded the business considerably, by utilising the area previously occupied by Medlab. “We actually still get lots of people through the door looking for the medical laboratory, which is now in a new premises around the corner on Bank Street.” Mr Taitoko says the relocation of the laboratory has allowed them to shift their office and treatment rooms across to the other side of the building, while the area previously used is now being developed as a rehabilitation gym. “It has taken quite a while to relocate - altering the layout, painting the rooms, getting the floors carpeted and setting the treatment rooms up with equipment - but it is a much better working environment and provides more space to treat our clients.” The couple previously worked for CAPE Physio in the Hawkes Bay for 12 months, but have returned to the Waikato to run their own practice. Mr Taitoko is from Te Aroha orignally and trained in Auckland, completing a Bachelor of Health Science (physiotherapy) in 2001. While the couple and their two sons enjoyed the Hawkes Bay lifestyle, they are also pleased to be back in the Waikato. “This area is home and starting a new practice here is very exciting.” CAPE Physio provides physiotherapy services for spinal injuries, sports injuries, occupational injuries, household

Netball reps shine Everyone's Deal at Farmlands Te Awamutu Under-15 netball representatives excelled winning four out of five games in section play at the North Island tournament in New Plymouth. Diane Cox reports that the Colleen Black coached, Rob Kingi managed side of Ngatini Torea (captain) Elsie Reynolds, Jessie Kingi, Kerry Cable-Dixon, Catherine Peake, Rebecca Strong, Hana Bryant, Charlie Sheppard, Charlotte Fraser and Danya Baker represented Te Awamutu with pride, dignity and plenty of skill. They finished seventh out of 26 teams in their section. After losing their second game against Harbourside, they won a nail-biter against Waiuku 34-32 to finish second in pool play and play off for overall placings of five to nine. With the weather deteriorating on the final day, the team struggled to implement their game plan against Taranaki Development (in the semi final) but refocused in their final game against Eastern Waikato, winning 26-24 with some outstanding defensive work. Te Awamutu’s qualified regional umpire Sandy Cassells, who

officiated at the tournament, had the distinction of being awarded the final. Earlier in the season the under-15 representatives won three out of four games at the Tokoroa tournament which they used to develop combinations and team play. They beat Cambridge Development 25-8, Tokoroa Development 16-12 and Morrinsville 18-11, only to lose the final 17-11 against Taumarunui. Catherine Peake deserved special mention for her outstanding play throughout the tournament.

Injuries hamper under-17 side Te Awamutu Under 17 representatives finished their North Island tournament with a seeding of 22 out of 38 teams in Wanganui. They were seeded 14th entering the tournament. First day wins over Wanganui 40-10 and Matamata 24-23 were offset by a 27-16 loss to Howick. Day two saw them play only one game against Manawatu,

losing 32-15. The defence worked hard, gaining many turnovers but it was not the shooters’ day. Injuries to six of their players did not help their cause. On day three they beat Bay of Plenty 21-19, suffered losses to Kapati 31-27 and Taranaki 25-24, and beat Marlborough 26-25. The Wendy Heta coached team comprised Cynthia Matchitt, Chyna Hohepa, Jasmine Emery, Erana Severne, Nina Singh, Katherine Black, Lace McCool, Jennifer Adam and Manawa King, with Gwen Matchitt manager. Te Awamutu umpire Linda Sprangers officiated throughout the tournament. As a warm up to Wanganui, the Under-17s entered tournaments at Tokoroa and Pukekohe earlier in the season. They won both games against Tokoroa 17-9 and Eastern Waikato 20-16 at Tokoroa. There was no stopping them at Pukekohe. They were in a class of their own, thrashing Pukekohe 196, Mangere/Oahu 33-5 and Waiuku 20-11.

SA to fore in women’s pennant Stewart Alexander produced the best score in the third and final round of the Waikato weekend pennant at Te Awamutu. With the best three nets out of four counting, the Stewart Alexander team of Ani Bahler, Tema Tapu, Cheryl Forster and Pam Thomson headed the field of 18 teams with a total of 219. Horsham Downs were next on 223, with the Narrows and Ngahinapouri (M. Whiteman, J. Roberts, D. Hird, A. Clare) tied for third on 224. Te Awamutu failed to cash in

on the home course advantage, finishing a disappointing 14th on 235, although they upstaged Pirongia on 245. In the overall contest, the Hamilton team of L. Jones, J. Findlay, J. McDermid and C. Atwell began the day one point behind Waikare. They surged to the lead with a total of 672, to win by two strokes, led by Lois Jones who had the best net (67) of the day. Waikare finished second on 674, with Horsham Downs third. Best placed of the local clubs

overall were Ngahinapouri and Stewart Alexander in sixth and seventh spots respectively with scores of 688 and 692. Te Awamutu finished 16th on 718 and Pirongia 18th on 747. HAPPINESS IS: Pirongia rugby team celebrates after winning the Waikato senior B division one Photo supplied championship in Hamilton. admirable soccer skills kicking the ball past the opposition fullback, then win the race to the ball just before it went over the dead ball line. Frankton capitalised on some shoddy midfield defence for their second try. But lack of discipline from their forwards let Pirongia have the final say of the first half. Captain Jason Harrison slotting the penalty for his side to lead 13-10. After some stirring words from coach Alan Walter and his assistant Kane Mason, Pirongia defended as if their lives depended on it in the second half. Frankton slotted a penalty to even the scores with 10 minutes

remaining. The heat went on both teams, knowing they had to pull one out of the bag to prevent the game from going into extra time. Pirongia halfback Malcolm Ellis stepped up to the plate, picking the ball out of a rolling maul, that had come to a halt. He darted down the blind, weaving his way past three defenders and dotted down under the sticks for the match winning try. Harrison added the conversion for a seven point win to the Mountain Men. Pirongia’s annual prize giving will be followed by a bucking bronco and band to rock the night away on Saturday. The theme is western.

Pirongia are the Waikato division one senior B rugby champions for 2006 after beating Frankton 21-13 in the final. Nigel Atkinson reports that the FIL, PGG Wrightson, Rural Contractors sponsored side are stoked to have clinched the championship on foreign soil in Hamilton after winning their home semi-final the previous weekend. “It’s the icing on the cake to what has been a memorable season,” says Atkinson. The Mountain Men opened the scoring with a try to No 8 Stewart Fitzgerald. A solid scrum, allowed Pirongia to mount an onslaught of runners off the rucks, headed by Fitzgerald. From the restart Frankton’s backline clicked into top gear. Some 50/50 passes managed to stick, enabling them to run in an unconverted try for a 5-all scoreline. Pirongia fullback Ross Denize sparked his team’s second try with a wonderful chip kick. The rapid Malcolm Samuels showed

Walker walks on water at Stewart Alexander

Sports U19 supremacy

Beth Walker won the women’s bogey scramble with a score of 2-down on par at Stewart Alexander Golf Club on Wednesday. Walker won by lot from Bev Herbert and Sylvia Brain, also on 2-down. Next were Sherril Lawrence at -3, Elaine Troutbeck, Barbara Dench, Heti Berg -4, Ani Bahler and Margaret Bouma -5. The small field had to contend with heavy underfoot conditions and threatening rain.

By Colin Thorsen Te Awamutu Sports pulled off an historic victory at Albert Park on Saturday, becoming the first ever Te Awamutu Sub Union team to win the Waikato under-19 rugby championship in 54 years. They produced an heroic 10 minutes of structured, textbook rugby at the death to pip University 13-12 in an epic final. First-five Nathan Merriman opened the scoring for the home team with a drop goal in the third minute, but from that point University assumed control. Te Awamutu Sports looked gone for all money, trailing 12-3 after 60 minutes. The margin would have been greater, if it had not been for a crucial try-saving tackle by Mathew Hawkins coming off his wing to prevent the University centre from going in under the posts. Their forward pack seemingly had the life strangled out of them by a considerably taller and heavier Varsity eight. Set pieces boarded on David and Goliath like proportions, with University winning at least two tightheads and cleaning out the lineouts. The visitors’ big men also did a lot of damage with pick and goes and one-off runners close to the fringes, particularly on the short side. Te Awamutu Sports’ cause was not helped

WAIKATO’S BEST: coaches Mark Fleming and Wayne Wirihana with their victorious Te Awamutu Sports under-19 side. 2200616AD by having their premier jumper Kaylam Singh injuring his shoulder trying to prevent the visitors from scoring the first of their two tries in eighth minute. How then, could Te Awamutu Sports rise from the dead, as they did, to produce two pieces of sublime rugby under immense pressure to get home. Put it down to massive hearts, a never say die attitude by all 22 players and coaches, and astute use of the bench, particularly bringing Hamish Forsman on at first five and moving Nathan Merriman to fullback. Just as the parochial hometown crowd went quiet, sensing the visitors were on course for victory, Te Awamutu Sports’ replacement

lock Andrew Smith stole lineout ball inside the University 22. Slick handling by the backs, with Merriman creating the extra man, put wing Ryan Patterson in at the corner to reduce the deficit to 12-8 with nine minutes to play.

Merriman’s sideline conversion hit the upright. From the kickoff, talented young second five Tyson Morgan sent the crowd wild with another scintillating midfield break and pass to Merriman on the cut. The ball went

to ground near the 22, the forwards arrived en masse to win quick ball and the slick backline again made no mistakes drawing and passing at pace to put Patterson in the clear down the grandstand touchline. Continued page 17.

From page 16. The 10.8 seconds, 100m man again had too much gas, scoring the match winning try in the same corner. With time running out, University mounted one last attack in opposition territory, only to knock on. Referee Murray Flay, who had a fine game, awarded Te Awamutu Sports a scrum feed. The ball was safely hooked, halfback Mark Thorsen hoofed it into touch and the place erupted as the final whistle sounded. The side has two wonderfully gifted coaches in Wayne Wirihana and Mark Fleming, a hard-working manager in Blair Briscoe and an inspirational captain in openside flanker Raymond Spooner. Richard McClandlish was on hand to present the shield to Spooner on behalf of the Waikato Rugby Union. He congratulated both teams on a wonderful final. “It just shows what tremendous improvement both teams have made since finishing fifth (Sports) and eighth (Varsity) in the first round.” Spooner thanked the large crowd of spectators who turned out, including Te Awamutu Sports premier team captain Heath Barclay who travelled from Huntly to be there. Coach Mark Fleming said the side had enjoyed tremendous parental support throughout the season. Steve Herbert of VE Veterinary Enterprises, which sponsors the Te Awamutu Sports under-19 side, said “As a sponsor you can’t ask for anything more than a winning team”. Club captain Chris Higginson said the under-19 win completed a marvellous treble for the club after the As and Bs triumphed last week.

‘Fateless’ is based on Nobel Prizewinner Imre Kertesz’s stunning novel about a Hungarian Jewish boy’s experiences during and after the Nazi occupation of Hungary. Gyuri Koves is a typical teenage boy caught up in the daily dramas of adolescence. When Nazi soldiers take over his native Budapest and begin imposing restrictions on the city’s Jewish citizens, his comfortable life changes profoundly. Gyuri resents these restrictions, especially since he has never considered himself particularly Jewish. A rapid succession of events forces him to reconcile himself to this

Gyuri prevails and is liberated by American soldiers. Still clad in his striped prison clothes, he returns to Budapest. Immediately, he senses the indifference of his neighbours to his experience. Former friends urge him to ‘put the ordeal out of his mind’, while a sympathetic intellectual keeps referring to the camps as ‘the lowest circle of hell’. Gyuri can relate to neither cliché and is left to ponder the meaning of his experience alone. A monumental production that should be seen.

One of the most important and possibly one of the most distinguished films ever made. You will actually live this film and become part of it. In it’s own right, maybe one of the best films you will ever see in your lifetime. No gloss, just the most real experience you will ever have. Truly heartwrenching, haunting, horrifying and definitely unforgettable. So profoundly moving, FATELESS is a monumental production and carries our personal recommendation. It needs to be seen and remembered.
