BRIEFLY Ecobulb offer extended

Homecoming concert

The success of the Waipa Ecobulb project has seen it extended for an extra two weeks. There is an extra voucher in today’s Courier (page 6) which can be redeemed along with $10 for five Ecobulbs at Te Awamutu’s Shell service stations. Waipa Networks Trust secretary Roger Johnston says the Trust and Electricity Commission decided to extend the promotion to ensure everyone in the community had the chance to take advantage of the offer of discounted Ecobulbs. Now in the sixth week of the project, over 25,000 energysaving Ecobulbs have been purchased in the Waipa region. As a result, thousands of residents will collectively save $2.5 Million on their power bills over the life of the bulbs.

Just beaut! The town’s best business and community premises, as well as the most beautiful gardens have been chosen and will be honoured at the annual Keep Te Awamutu Beautiful awards ceremony tomorrow. The supreme award (from section winners of the community awards) will also be announced during the evening. Winners of the community awards and best gardens are featured inside today (pages 12,13), while the supreme award winner and winners of the edible garden section will feature next week.

A community function is being staged to farewell long term Pirongia School deputy principal Jan Cullen. Mrs Cullen has had two teaching stints at the school - the latest from 1991-2006. She has been on leave this year working as a mathematics advisor with School Support Services and has accepted a permanent position in this role. The function will be held at the school activities centre from 2pm on December 1, followed by an afternoon tea for adults. Past pupils, fellow teachers, parents and community members are welcome to attend.

WIN A DOUBLE PASS Te Awamutu Courier and Brent Eccles Entertainment have a double pass to give away to Tim’s Te Awamutu concert. Tickets can be purchased from the Te Awamutu i-Site Visitor Information Centre. To be in to win put your name and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized envelope, answer the question below, address it to the ‘Tim Finn Competition’ and ensure it reaches our office by 5pm Friday. Tim Finn has performed publicly three times previously in Te Awamutu. Have a go at naming the years. The winner will be chosen from correct, or closest to correct, answers.

Spring means growing time - not just for our gardens and agricultural crops, but also for cannabis plantations. Police warn that growers will be out tending to their cannabis crops, usually planted in bush, maize plantations and on isolated farmland, over the coming months and ask that the public be vigilant about suspicious activity. Detective Mark Smith of Te Awamutu says anyone with information or who witnesses suspicious activity should contact police. He says the drugs being grown are

the same drugs later offered for sale to young people in our community, even our kids. Police say cannabis is a catalyst for other offending such as burglaries, thefts and violence. Detective Smith says it is a community problem, best dealt with by the community getting involved and reporting what they know or see. Information can be passed anonymously to Detective Smith during office hours or via after hours messaging to 872 0132.

By Dean Taylor Tim Finn plans to renew his relationship with his hometown when he concludes his short nationwide ‘Imaginary Kingdom’ tour here on Saturday, December 2. Te Awamutu was purposely chosen for the tour finale. As the elder Finn brother says, “there’s a shared history there that is good to revisit once in a while.” “Although I have no immediate family still living there, I have old friends, and it means a lot to Dad to come over from Cambridge every so often,” he says. “He regularly does it on Anzac Day for example.” Tim’s new solo album is being described as the best yet. For a songwriter and bandsman who has written such Split Enz classics as ‘Poor Boy’, ‘I Hope I Never’, and ‘Dirty Creature’, co-written Crowded House’s ‘Weather With You’, ‘Four Seasons In One Day’ and ‘It’ Only Natural’ and had solo hits such as ‘How’m I Gonna Sleep’, ‘Persuasion’ and ‘Fraction Too Much Friction’ that is high praise. But for Tim the songwriting is the easy part. And at 54-years-old, his passion to perform is still strong. No doubt buoyed by the success of the last Finn brothers project, which saw them touring the world on-and-off, both as a duo and with band, for nearly two years, Tim shows no sign of slowing down. In fact many of the new songs were written while touring. He says the very act of touring and playing inspires the creative juices, so the songs kept coming. And the inspiration comes from everywhere - including his Te Awamutu childhood. “Astounding Moon’ harks back to his days as a boy with a telescope on the deck of his Teasdale Street home. He says he is not so much driven to write and perform, “the songs seem to flow easily from a more regularly patterned life and strong relationships”. “It’s not ‘happy ever after’ and white picket fences - there will always be problems and a degree of suffering - but I now have a balance and the songs seem to come along unbidden,” he says. Tim says balancing work and family life is easiest during a writing phase and hardest during a touring cycle. “I have a very understanding wife, in fact she motivates me and is my ‘conscience’,” he says. “She believes very strongly in the power and beauty of music and that makes it all so much easier.” Tim is promising a good balance of material to keep all the fans happy on this tour, with plenty there for fans of Split Enz. And keeping him on his toes is a great band, full of energy and a youthfulness. Mareea Paterson, whom Tim worked with on his last solo tour, is back on bass, ex-Mocker Brett Adams is on guitar and vocals, providing as Tim describes ‘great harmonies and brilliant guitar work’, Simen (the Norwegian with an unpronounceable surname) is on keyboards and completing the line-up is ex-betchadupa drummer Matt Eccles, who also worked on Tim’s ‘Feeding The Gods’ album.

By Colin Thorsen The quality of the blooms was outstanding at the 49th annual Te Awamutu Spring Rose Show given the dreadful weather. Ohaupo’s Bev Turnwald has been bringing roses to the show for over 30 consecutive years. She cannot recall a worse couple of days leading up to this year’s show which ran from Friday to Sunday in the St Patrick’s Hall. “The rain, hail and wind caused havoc with the roses,” says Mrs Turnwald. When interviewed by the Courier on judging day, show convenor Barbara Dench said the roses were ‘absolutely beautiful’ until two days ago. “Entries may be down from 650 in 2005 to 350 this year but they still made a wonderful show. “I’m pleased with the entries given the weather conditions.” Mrs Dench said it was good to see five first time exhibitors showing their roses, joining the other 8-9 novices. First time exhibitors are eligible to remain in novice class for two years before having to move up into open class. Mrs Turnwald said some of the novelty classes were fabulous and the basket section, as always, proved a drawcard. There was a standout entry in the novelty ‘Waikato Magic’ section - a horse drawn cart laden with red and yellow roses carrying some of the Waikato NPC rugby players, including skipper Steven Bates (Te Awamutu Sports) and All Black

By Dean Taylor Ted Sircombe is the unofficial gardener in his communal home - and he wouldn’t have it any other way. He lives with four other flatmates under the care of Idea Services and keeps the outside of the home looking cheerful with his array of roses and other plants. This year support worker Ann Mackie encouraged Mr Sircombe to enter the Te Awamutu Rose Show and much to everyone’s delight he came away with a trophy for best single miniature rose stem for a first time exhibitor, plus a number of other placings. Mr Sircombe says that is enough encouragement to enter again next year. He says he learnt to garden from his parents with whom he lived on the family farm most of his life. Since coming under the care of Idea Services, Mr Sircombe has continued to use his knowledge and love of gardening to the benefit of his flatmates. YOUR LETTERS

Someone must know Early on the morning of Sunday, November 6, some mindless cretin(s) set fire to our Intermediate School’s newly-opened challenge course. My past experience of previous cases of school arson tells me that the idiots who do it also cannot resist bragging about their actions. So, surely, yes surely, somebody in our community must know something about this incident. While it’s doubtful that any directly-connected people are readers of this column, it must be that somebody who sees this letter will, perhaps be able to give the Police or the school some useful information which will help to track down the arsonists. The challenge course took many, many months of dedicated hard work by the PTA, students, parents and staff to raise the $16,000 to buy it and many hours of voluntary work to erect it. I wonder if those who chose to destroy it have ever done anything positive like that in their whole lives! If, on reading this, you can throw any light on this tragedy, by passing on the information you could help 450 deserving children to see that justice can be done, and, who knows, by making the culprits accountable, do something for them. A SNAZZY Honda CRF 50 is among the 25 prizes to be handed out in the lead up to the big draw at Albert Park on December 17. The prize has been provided by participating retailers Peter Glidden Honda and Liquorland (represented above by Peter Bryant, far left, and Judy Walworth respectively). Also pictured are Mike Van Der Hoeven of Magills 325065AD Wholesale Meats (second from left) and organiser Brett Watson of Curtain, Tile and Carpet Court. The Te Awamutu $1 Million Promotion is certainly proving to be a worthwhile investment for participating retailers. Interest in the promotion is already high and building every day with less than a month to the big draw. Shoppers at participating retail outlets not only go in the draw for a chance to win $1 Million - with 25 worthwhile prizes also to be won on the big draw day (December 17 at Albert Park). Organiser Brett Watson says he has received nothing but positive feedback about the promotion. He has spoken with most of the 25 retailers involved and they have

indicated they are delighted with the response they have received. “The promotion seems to have captured people’s imaginations and has provided great coverage and incentive for people to shop with participating retailers.” Judy Walworth of Liquorland says the $1 Million promotion has seen a 10% increase in number of customers coming into the shop. “They are certainly aware of the promotion and happily handing over their vouchers to be stamped - at times increasing their spend to qualify for another ($20) stamp on their voucher.” Mike Van Der Hoeven of Magills Wholesale Meats says his store, like

Liquorland, enjoys a high foot traffic count. “We’ve had lots of interest in the promotion and I would say that we’ve also had a 10% increase in the number of customers and some of those extras are spending a lot of money with us.” Peter Bryant of Peter Glidden Honda says clients are asking about the promotion and those buying big ticket items are rapt when they qualify for a large number of tickets in the draw. The person whose name is drawn on December 17 will have a one in 100 chance of selecting the million dollar envelope - and whether they claim the big prize or not, will walk away with a $6000 TV and home theatre package.

Leave schools alone I am writing with regard to the vandalism that happened to the Intermediate School playground recently. I moved out of Auckland to get away from things like this happening. I was quite upset and angry when I read your article on this latest vandalism. My daughter goes to Pekerau School which also seems to get

hit regularly by vandals. ‘Children and parents at all the schools do a lot of fundraising so they can have decent school equipment and playgrounds and then some idiots (polite name for them) go and destroy these things. I think things like that totally suck. These idiots are just ruining it for the rest of the children.

Nick Empson writes blaming the end user for liberating dioxins into the environment by burning paper etc containing them. The real villain in this is the person who put the material in the paper to begin with - blame the people who create the pollution, not the person who it is secretly passed on to. Incineration of wood products is normal and in fact a requirement of our ecosystem to complete the carbon cycle. All of that carbon has been previously borrowed from the atmosphere by trees. It is better to burn wood than throw it in the dump. Before humans arrived on earth, forests were struck by lightning (made by God?) and these native forests burned to the ground releasing massive carbon deposits back into the atmosphere. The trees consumed these and grew back and in that process released massive pollen deposits into the at-

mosphere causing the strong to endure the discomfort and the weak to become addicted to antihistamines. The main difference is that there were no snivelling local government and government personnel with a corrupted civil service mentality to tell God and others how bad that was for the environment and how we should reduce the amount of carbon we let go and how the release of pollen is minor and not counted when to some it is serious. Whilst the Christians then fought about who was right and who was wrong about what it all meant and if school was or was not the right place to learn it, some countries set up a racket whereby they get paid a tax on carbon and New Zealand seems to want to pay it rather than collect it from others. Why are we not sending out the carbon bills rather than paying them? JAMES PARLANE Abridged

Our kids deserve to have decent areas to play and learn. Leave our schools alone! If this vandalism keeps up then our kids could lose their playgrounds and that is not fair on anyone. What have our schools done to deserve this treatment from a bunch of idiots? ANGELA RAMSAY

New Zealanders will never accept nuclear way Anti-nuclear folk can relax ‘Gone by lunchtime’ Don Brash supporter Michael Cox has got it all wrong in what he has to say in the Courier about nuclear power generation in this country. He does not speak often at band time but when he does everyone sits up and listens. He is a keen member and thoroughly enjoys the music comradeship the band offers him. Steve Towers was presented with a Five Years Service Award. He arrived in the band from Fielding where he was an active playing member. Within a short time he stepped into bass section of Te Awamutu Brass and played BBb bass for most of the last five years, with this year being the exception where he played Eb bass for the 2006 national contest. He introduced sons, Alex and Matthew, to brass and they were in learners under the then conductor, John Pye. All three were together at nationals this year as members of the senior band.

Two members of Te Awamutu Brass who have a combined total of 50 years service were honoured at the band’s recent awards evening. Michelle Robertson and Pauline Allen both joined the ranks in 1981 - Michelle was at Intermediate School and Pauline was taking her son Ken to learners’ class. They were presented with Brass Brands Association of New Zealand 25 Years Service Awards by BBANZ representative, Robert Wilson. Both band members have played tenor horn during most of their years with the band and have sat next to each other for most of this time. Pauline Allen has been the band’s corporal for the last eight years and still holds this position for the coming year. She is also one of the band’s new life members. Both members have had their own family members playing for the band over the years. Michelle’s husband Colin, daughter Sarah and son Fraser all play instruments, while her mother Pat is the band secretary. Pauline’s sons Ken and Jonathon played whilst at home with Ken joining the auxiliary ranks when his son, Tim, was learning. The father and son duo played for the auxiliary band for a few years. Ten Years Service Awards were presented to Kaperiera Hughes and Graeme Plenderleith by conductor Malcolm Gapes Kaperiera started in the learners’ group under John Pye and very quickly worked her way into the senior ranks of the band. She was one of the band’s smallest members at the time but the sound she achieved from her cornet was brilliant. She was a member of the New Zealand Secondary Schools band and has proved on Anzac Day that she is a great bugle player. Graeme Plenderleith is a valued member of the trombone

On Saturday evening, many of Te Awamutu’s war veterans and their partners gathered at the RSA Clubrooms for a military styled formal dinner to mark both the 90th Anniversary of the founding of the Returned Services Association and the 2006 ‘Year of the Veteran’. The Dining President for the evening was Major David Bowler RNZA (rtd), who served as an Artillery Troop Commander during the Vietnam War. In 1916, as the first anniversary of the Gallipoli Landings of 1915 began approaching, various individual groups of War Veterans, Widows, Parents and Families began considering how best to observe and commemorate that fateful landing, and the subsequent loss of life. In Auckland, a group met and later called itself the Returned Soldiers Association and it was from the design of their particular badge that the current RSA badge has evolved. Similarly, in Christchurch, yet another group of Gallipoli Veterans formed an ‘Anzac day sub-committee’ as early as February 1916, to consider how best to commemorate the first anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign. By the following month, Christchurch RSA had decided upon a ‘commemoration service for 11 am on the 25 of April.’ The actual beginnings of the Returned Services Association is said to be traced to a group of Gallipoli Veterans in Wellington, who met together three days after Anzac Day in 1916, and formed a local association,…90 years ago this year. Course provides skills to build relationships By Cathy Asplin Relating to other people is an essential skill whether it be in the home, the workplace or the community. However, tutor Rex Booth is all too aware that many people struggle with this. “Building relationships is not always an area of success for many people. With today’s busy lifestyles people often don’t work on their relationships. “In some cases people simply don’t know how to build a deeper relationship with their partner, their children or people in their commmunity. “The Bridge Builders course equips and empowers people to build and strengthen raltionships. “It is a practical, powerful interactive training course that gives people tools and skills they can use immediately.” The ‘weekend’ course kicks off this Thursday evening, then runs Fri-

Round the Bridges glory Laura Sinclair maintains sensational crosscountry form on road

See VetEnt for the best Worm and Parasite Control for calves, replacements and beef stock

Te Awamutu teenager Laura Sinclair stole the show at this year’s Round the Bridges fun run and walk in Hamilton. The 15-year-old was first girl home and sixth overall in the 6.3km secondary school section in a time of 26m12s. Her coach Murray Green says she has just carried on from where she left off with her outstanding cross country form throughout the winter. She finished second in last year’s Round the Bridges race but turned-the-tables on 2005 winner Lydia O’Donnell (Tauranga) this year. Sinclair was a member of the second placed Te Awamutu College team, along with Trent Nicholson (5th), Andrew Muller (7th), Cameron Furer (11th) and Andre Peake (7th girl). The team finished runners-up to an all male team from Hillcrest High, just missing out on retaining the trophy they won last year. This year’s event attracted record entries, with nearly 3000 runners and walkers competing. Peake and Sinclair followed up with fine performances at the Waikato/Bay of Plenty 3000m championships at Porritt Stadium the following weekend. Sinclair finished third in the W16 grade with a personal best time of 10m51s. Peake won the U15 girls’ event only minutes after winning an 800m event in the older W16 grade. Her 3000m time of 11m7s took a whopping 47 seconds off her previous best. Sinclair and Peake will contest the New Zealand Secondary School championships on December 9-10. Coach Green holds high hopes for these two and several others in the squad.

By Colin Thorsen Te Awamutu YMI was a hive of activity as recreational gymnasts from around the Waikato competed in the annual Gymfun day on Saturday. Gymnasts ranging in age from 5 to 13 years competed on five apparatus, floor, beam, bars, pommel and vault. The winning team, decided on the highest average score over all apparatus, was Morrinsville Gym Club. They took out the Naomi Forshaw Memorial Trophy. The day concluded with a display of rhythmic gymnastics by the Spiralz Gymnastics Club (Hamilton), followed by a display of men’s gymnastics by members of Hamilton City Gymnastics and Te Awamutu YMI - all of whom had recently competed at the Gymsport nationals in Christchurch. Biggest applause was saved for Te Awamutu senior gymnast Gavin Lodge. Competing in his 12th consecutive national championships as a Waikato representative, Lodge won the gold medal on pommel, bronze on floor and bronze on high bar. Lodge was selected to represent New Zealand in the men’s Level 9 team in the Trans-Tasman challenge against Australia, won by New Zealand. Lodge has previously represented New Zealand at the NSW championships.

By Colin Thorsen A classy field of 130 riders including Olympians and several New Zealand representatives gave the inaugural Maungatautari 100km Classic Cycle and Fun Ride the thumbs up on Sunday. It was fitting that an event with so much potential, with so much money at stake, should be won in its formative year by two hometown heroes - Tim Gudsell (men’s race) and Melissa Holt (first woman). The dynamics and excitement exploded right from the rolling start at a pace more appropriate to a 40km time trial, rather than a 93km race. Setting the pace were Geoff Burndred (Hamilton), fresh from the Tour of Southland, Sam Bewley (Rotorua), individual pursuit silver medalist and team pursuit gold medallist at last year’s world junior (U19) championships, and Shem

TIM GUDSELL, one of New Zealand’s only two professional riders, wins the first ever Maungatautari Cycle Classic in Park Road on Sunday as his proud mother Diane records the moment with a dictaphone. 3250618AD Rodger (Te Awamutu Sports club), silver medallist in team pursuit at this year’s world (under-19) junior championships. The pace was relentless with the trio holding their lead through to the 30km mark when joined by the professional rider Gudsell, two-times Te Awamutu open winner Justin Kerr (Hamilton) and Cameron Holt (Te Awamutu Sports Club). With prize money going down to fifth place, there was always going to be one unlucky member of this leading sextet who had cleared out from the main peleton. Bewley endured every cyclist’s nightmare, puncturing 60km into the race - relegating him to the also rans. The remaining five riders rode solidly all the way through until 5km to go. LEADING the 100km Cycle Classic main chasing group in the shadow of Maungatautari are, from left, Te Awamutu Sports Club’s Peter Rennie (who placed 8th), Mark Langlands (6th), Melissa Holt (first woman) and Rotorua’s Simon Honour (U17 winner). 3250619AD From page 18. Holt attacked first, with Kerr countering him. Gudsell then went with Kerr, putting 35 seconds on the other three entering Te Awamutu. Patience and positioning were critical with less than 2km to go. With 200m to ride and $1000 at stake, Gudsell timed his run perfectly, powering to a four bike lengths win, with Kerr second, followed by Burndred, Rodger and Holt. Gudsell’s winning time was 2.28.10. Olympian Melissa Holt produced a powerful performance to be first female home in 2.35.08.

Her Colavita team-mate in the United States last year, American Sarah Tollinston pipped Te Awamutu’s New Zealand junior (U19) road champion Rushlee Buchanan in a photo finish for second women in 2.40.08. Buchanan was credited with the same time, filling third spot. Rotorua riders took out the under-17 100km ride quinella. Simon Honour took the honours, with Wade Mangham second - both finishing in 2.35.08. Scott Green was third in 2.48.54. Grey Power’s two prizes for the oldest rider in each catergory was well received by the crowd at the prizegiving.

The Oscar-winning animation teams behind Wallace & Grommit and Shrek join forces to present this new comedy set on and beneath the streets of London. Roddy St James (voiced by Hugh Jackman) is a pampered pet mouse who thinks he’s got it made. But when a sewer rat named Sid - the very definition of ‘low life’ - comes spewing out of the sink and decides it’s his turn to enjoy the lap of luxury, Roddy schemes to rid himself of the pest by luring him into the

Underground Roddy discovers a vast metropolis where he meets Rita (Kate Winslet) a street wise rat who is on a mission of her own. If Roddy is going to get home he and Rita will need to escape the clutches of the villainous Toad (Sir Ian McKellen) who royally despises all the rodents and has dispatched two hapless henchrats, Spike
