BRIEFLY Mum in the money? Someone who bought their Lotto ticket at Te Awamutu Paper Plus last Tuesday has won a great holiday and $100,000. They were among 10 lucky Lotto Triple Dip players who have won a trip to the multi-award winning Hilton Maldives, as well as $100,000 cash, in Lotto’s Mother’s Day promotion. The winning voucher number for the Te Awamutu ticket was 447726. Paper Plus owner Murray Green says he hopes it is a ‘lucky mum’ who won the prize. “We sure sold plenty of Mother’s day Lotto tickets.” Mr Green also advises that both Division II winning tickets (worth $18,732) have been claimed - the second one by a regular client returning from holiday last Friday.

Pirates of Pirongia

By Dean Taylor Two years planning and hard work came to fruition last Thursday when Kihikihi’s Community Policing office opened for business and the first Community Safety Patrols took to the streets. The concept of a Safer Community Council was first raised by Te Awamutu Community Board about two years ago, but a submission to Waipa District Council for a Waipa-wide service failed to attract the necessary support at that stage. Undeterred Waipa Councillor and Community Board member Hazel Barnes and Community Constable Richard Hurrell proceeded for a service for this side of the district. Much of the research

and networking put in place for the district submission was put to good use, and Te Awamutu and District Police bosses continued to give their support to the project. First step was the formation of the Te Awamutu Safer Community Charitable Trust of Mrs barnes (chairperson), Mr Hurrell, Chris Smith, Terry Osment and Chris Grenfell. The Trust investigated what was wanted, and what was achievable, for our district. Kihikihi residents had raised the issue of a stronger policing presence for the village, and some sort of patrol, and that helped form the nucleus of what was launched last week. Continued page 9.

Officer bottled, man arrested

Pirongia Voluntary Rural Fire Force is staging its fifth annual ball, this year with a Pirates of the Carribean/Pirongia theme. The ball will be held on Saturday, June 16 at Pirongia Memorial Hall, with live entertainment by Trace Element and rewards for original costumes. Tickets are available from Te Awamutu Copy Centre and Pirongia Village Store. For more information phone 871 6030 or 871 9033, or email [email protected]

New meeting place offered Following the Te Awamutu Courier article on the local Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Group, new facilities for meetings have become available. Coordinator Rangitaia Crowley says the group is fortunate to have been offered the use of the St Johns parish Church hall, and they are much appreciative of the offer. Next meetings in the new facility will be Thursdays July 12, September 13 and November 8 from 10am - 1pm as usual. Regular meetings at the Te Awamutu Maori Women Welfare League Community Rooms in Lyon Street, Kihikihi are Wednesdays June 11, August 8 and October 10. For further information contact Mrs Crowley (021521950).

A 17-year-old Te Awamutu man faces charges of aggravated wounding, possession of an offensive weapon and theft after hospitalising a police officer on Friday night. Police were responding to a theft report from Te Awamutu Wines and Spirits after two young men entered the store at about 9.20pm and stole four bottles of spirits. A short time later the Te Awamutu officer attempted to apprehend a group of three young men suspected of stealing the alcohol, and was hit in the side of the face with a full one litre bottle of alcohol which had been stolen. The officer was admitted to Waikato Hospital with facial injuries, including a broken cheekbone. He was expected to return to hospital today for surgery and is on leave until he has recovered. The 17-year-old offender decamped, but was arrested on Sunday morning and taken to Hamilton where he appeared in Hamilton District Court yesterday and was remanded in custody.

FIRST NIGHT: Volunteer community patrollers Bo Edwards (left) and Michael Langdale-Hunt pictured at work on the first night of the new community safety 135071AD initiative last Thursday. Also on patrol with the pair was Phil Herewini.

Burglary, arson under investigation Police and Fire Safety is investigating a burglary and arson at Te Awamutu Prepackers in Rickit Road Sunday night. A call to smoke in the vicinity came from a passing member of the public at 9.40pm Sunday night. When Te Awamutu volunteer firefighters arrived they found the rear of the premises well involved. A good save by the brigade,

thanks to the vigilance of the public, limited damage to the rear storage area and electrical system. Officer in charge Michael Kimber says the fire was close to entering the main building and the result could have been much more serious. Investigations suggest the storeroom had been entered and an accelerant used to set fire to packaging awaiting use.

Flammable liquid also ran from the storeroom and spread the fire towards the main factory. Te Awamutu Prepackers coowner John Lindsay says it was business as usual as much as possible Monday morning. Staff were able to process product, but sever damage to the electrical switchboard and switching gear meant the main cooler was out of action until rewiring was completed.

Detective Mark Smith is interested in hearing from anyone with information that could assist the enquiry. Any member of the public with information, or who witnessed any suspicious activity in the Rickit Road area, or who noticed or smelt smoke before the 9.40pm call was made is asked to contact detective Smith in confidence at the Te Awamutu Police Station (872 0100).

The smacking debate has highlighted the fact that under MMP a minor party is able to force its ideological agenda onto the country against the will of the majority of voters. It has reinforced the view that under MMP the tail is wagging the dog. As a result, more and more people are questioning whether MMP is fulfilling its promise of ensuring that the view of voters holds more weight. The call for the long-awaited referendum on MMP is now growing louder. The New Zealand Centre for

Political Debate is currently running a research project asking for feedback on the level of public support for a referendum on MMP. I would therefore like to invite readers of your newspaper to take part in the public poll which can be found on the NZCPR website at www.nzcpr.com - and share their thoughts on whether a binding referendum on MMP should be held. If anyone has any queries, I can be contacted on [email protected]. DR MURIEL NEWMAN NZ Centre for Political Research www.nzcpr.com

losers too

Have you noticed how many games must have winners and losers? I think there are other ways to have fun. When you next play Scrabble with the family try something different. For the first round score individually as usual and then total the family score. For the second round ask the players if they think the score will be higher if they help one another. Discuss ways to help one another if everyone agrees. For example, swap letters or let everyone see what you have and make suggestions. Get agreement on a new rule. Score the family total only. Compare the results with round one and plan to do even better. Discuss the difference between competition and co-operation. JUNE BRIGHT Fair Play Club

Sign marks allergy awareness week By Cathy Asplin Reuben O’Keeffe looks like your average three-year-old at Playcentre. He gives a cheeky grin as he flies down the slide with his arms out like Superman. But, just like when Superman comes near kryptonite, a tiny amount of a particular substance can cripple Reuben, with the ability to kill him. That substance is nuts. When Reuben was just 13-months-old he touched a peanut butter sandwich being held by his older sister. His mother Diane was shocked at the reaction. “He came up in red welts where he had touched the sandwich and where he had put his hand to his face. “Initially I tried to wipe him with a cold flannel,

but he kept swelling, so we headed to the doctors. “By the time we got there the whole side of his face was swollen to the extent that his eye had closed.” A later blood test confirmed the diagnosis of an allergy to nuts, with peanuts producing the worst reaction. “On the scale they used he had a positive reaction of 10, the highest you can have.” Unlike many other allergies which result in spots or feeling unwell, Reuben’s reaction to nuts is extreme to the point where he has anaphylaxis, a severe reaction that is life threatening. Swelling can affect his airways and could kill him in just 30 minutes. The O’Keeffe family has become accustomed to a

change in diet - with no nuts in the house - while they try to keep an eye on him when he is at other homes. But as he gets older he is often places without his family. “He has been given a peanut butter sandwich by mistake, which he spat out as soon as he realised. “But this resulted in him vomiting, then swelling up. By the time he was in an ambulance he was having difficulty breathing and a paramedic had adrenaline on standby. Fortunately he didn’t need it.” The family also has to be conscious of what is contained in foods or how they are cooked. “We’ve learned to check labels on foods for any traces of nuts and we now tend to buy the same things that we

know are safe.” Reuben has been attending Te Awamutu Playcentre since he was a baby, so families at the centre have been well aware of his allergy. But new families are joining playcentre all the time, which means constantly alerting people of the danger and a need to be vigilant with food coming into the centre. A desire to keep Reuben safe has seen the playcentre take a further step, declaring the area ‘nut free’. King Country Association support person Janet Moody says Te Awamutu is the first playcentre to take this step in the area and believes it is likely to be the first centre in the country as well. “When we tried to get a sign for the gate we couldn’t find one, so we had to have it specially designed. “We have now let other playcentres know that the signs are available and it may be that they take up the offer if they have a child that also suffers from a nut allergy.” Local resident Paula Ryburn welcomes the move by Te Awamutu Playcentre. Her son Austin (7) who attends Te Awamutu Primary also has a severe allergy to nuts. “His first day at school was the hardest day of my life - it was the scariest thing I’ve ever had to do. “At home we can control the food in the house, while our family and friends are well aware of his allergy. But once he goes to school that control is gone. “Some people simply don’t understand - they think we’re just being fussy about what Austin eats - that’s cer-

Impromptu performance has Peter Posa eyeing comeback Legendary guitarist Peter Posa gave an impromptu performance at a TEAR Fund concert in Te Awamutu recently and was so energised by it he wants to make a comeback with his own band. A packed house at Te Awamutu Baptist Church applauded and cheered when gospel blues guitarists Steve Apirana and Derek Lind invited Peter Posa onto the stage. The pair were playing in Te Awamutu as part of their Still Standing tour promoting TEAR Fund’s child sponsorship. Mr Posa (65) said he had been lying low in Te Awamutu and few people knew he lived there. He moved there three years ago when his wife wanted to be nearer her family. Moving away from his Auckland musician friends has meant he has had few opportunities to perform. Steve Apirana and Derek Link visited him just hours before their concert and played blues music with him. “We had a bit of a jam and Steve said ‘you are coming out and playing with us’,” Mr Posa says. That evening he watched their concert and was so nervous about playing he had to leave the room several times. “I didn’t know until they called me up on stage whether I could play or not. I hadn’t even had a sound test.” After five minutes playing blues, the legendary guitarist treated the crowd to a few well known tunes from the 1960s such as ‘Guitar Boogie’ and ‘Wheels’. He also played his own composition ‘String Breaker’, a flamenco tune yet to be released. In recent years Mr Posa has suffered from depression and debilitating pain after an accident in the 1970s, but hearing the response to his playing made him feel overwhelmed with happiness. “It gave me a chance just to let go. It was every bit as good as it ever was,” he enthuses. The experience made him realise he needed to get back to playing gigs “as quickly as possible” to overcome the loneliness he’s felt in recent years. “I have got to get out there and play again. I have just got to get out there and do it.” Peter Posa wants to form a band in the Waikato and needs a bass player, drummer and keyboard player. Interested musicians need not be concerned about the former star being inflexible in his musical style. He still plays his guitar up to four hours

a day and has branched into jazz, blues, pop, ballads, gospel and rock ‘n’ roll. The only things he refuses to play are hip hop and rap. In his heyday he played electric guitar but now prefers acoustic which he said is more honest. Mr Posa was amazed after the Te Awamutu concert when young people came up to him saying how much they enjoyed the music. Unfortunately he won’t be recording any new CDs even if he forms a band, but he is considering putting his music on the internet. Musicians interested in forming a band need to be down to earth, respectable, honest and most of all humble, he said. Peter Posa can be contacted by e-mailing [email protected] or phone (07) 871 3955. Article and photo by Helen Tatham.

A dehumidifier works on the same principal as a refrigerator. Moisture laden air is drawn into the dehumidifier and is passed over a cold coil (evaporator). The warm damp air then condenses on the cold coil into water droplets, which pass into the water container. The air is then passed over the warm coil (condenser) and is expelled from the dehumidifier.

In cold conditions the water accumulating on the cold coil may freeze. For this reason it is important that the dehumidifier has a Hot Gas Defrost system. This very simply enables the dehumidifier to transfer hot gases into the cold coil, thus melting any moisture that may have been frozen. Without a system of this type the dehumidifier must defrost itself (only achievable when temperatures rise) or employ an expensive to run, heavy and noisey heating system. As the dehumidifier lowers the humidity, it will start to remove dampness that has accumulated in the wall linings, furnishings and bedding. For this reason it is important to run the dehumidifier constantly for the first few weeks, particularly in very damp situations. Once the desired humidity levels are reached the dehumidifier should be used to maintain the humidity level.

The Queen’s Guide Award is a great addition to any CV and is seen by many employers as an example of a young person’s ability to pursue a programme over a substantial length of time. It requires the guide to work as part of a team, as well as individually, over a wide range of fields. Michelle is continuing with guiding, as a pippin leader and guide leader. Four years of hard work, dedication and service to the community through the guiding movement culminated for Michelle Gillard of Te Awamutu when she received her Queen’s Guide Award. It was presented at Government House in Auckland by Susan Satyanand, wife of governor general Anand Satyanand. The Queen’s Guide is the highest award that a youth within the guiding movement can achieve. It usually takes around four years to complete and needs to be done before a guide’s 18th birthday. It involves working in 12 different aspects of guiding including outdoor activities, citizenship and technology. In Michelle’s case she completed

COMMUNITY Constable Richard Hurrell will be available two half-days per week from the office in 135079AD Kihikihi’s Community House. The patrols will operate Thursday to Saturday evenings. Three volunteers each shift, using the TrustPower sponsored vehicle, will patrol selected area identified by Police from reported incidents, plus general patrols and they can be directed by Police on the night to assist or respond in case of incident. As an example patrols in the first three nights were used to help locate three youths being sought after being seen on properties and helped with traffic control at a gas leak in the main street. Data recorded by the volunteers will be utilised by Police and Intel to assist with enquiries. Speaking at the opening Mayor Livingston and Te Awamutu Senior Sergeant Dave Simes spoke of

the cooperation between various agencies to bring about a safer community. They congratulated Mrs Barnes, the Trust, volunteers and all sponsors for making the project a reality. Mrs Barnes added her thanks, on behalf of the Trust, to Police, Council and funders for supporting the cause. She said their generosity and support meant the Kihikihi Police Base was of a high standard, volunteers had a good range of communication and safety equipment and vehicle running costs and maintenance are taken care of initially. Mrs Barnes said the Trust’s ongoing challenge is to continue to secure funds to maintain a high level of service.

From page 1. Thursday’s launch was twofold - the opening of Kihikihi’s Police Base and the first day of Community Patrols. Mr Hurrell will be available at the Lyon Street base on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am until 1pm, and welcomes any village residents wanting to discuss policing matters. His office is part of the community building leased by Te Awamutu Maori Women’s Welfare League and made available for a number of community groups. Te Awamutu’s Community Patrol, will be co-ordinated from the base, 32 trained volunteers who will add their eyes and ears to help keep Te Awamutu and district safe.

CARA Scott-Dickins (Katharina) is the centre of attention from Chayse Gorton (Petruchio) and Amy Viggers, Nicole Oliedam and Angie Howe. Photo supplied.

A group of five skilful Te Awamutu College actors and their talented student director have qualified to represent South Waikato region at the Sheila Winn Shakespeare Festival in Wellington at Queen’s Birthday. Year 12 student Morgan Reynolds directs fellow students, Chayse Gorton, Cara ScottDickins, Amy Viggers, Nicole Oliedam and Angie Howe, in a five minute scene from Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’. Their portrayal of the heated argument between Katharina and Petruchio was a standout at the regional competition in Putaruru earlier this month. In this scene Petruchio has just gone with his friends, Tranio and Gremio, to visit Katharina’s father Baptista. Petruchio is granted Katharina’s hand in marriage and wants to stir trouble by telling her himself. Katharina takes this as a personal insult and is furious at her father and her new fiance. “This is a very witty and clever scene made exceptional by the actors that I have had the privilege of directing,” says Morgan Reynolds. The College won the best student-directed scene for the region. “We are grateful to Sanders Chemist for donating quality make-up for the actors and to Morrinsville Little Theatre for providing beautiful costumes - these make the actors look outstanding and allow them to act this scene with confidence,” Morgan says. “I must admit that the costumes and make-up in our drama department are not very ‘Shakespearish’, so the costumes and make-up that have been donated to us are very much appreciated.”

Years of experience working in a variety of food outlets has provided Greg Duffield with a great knowledge of what the public likes. “I started working in restaurants after school and I’ve been working in food outlets ever since.” These have ranged from RSA’s and rugby league clubs to restaurants, like Fisherman’s Table in Auckland. He had operated Greggy’s Takeaways in Te Kuiti for 15 months, but his desire to be nearer to Hamilton saw him looking for another business opportunity further north. After looking around he found a suitable opportunity in Hazelmere Crescent. “It’s a little different to Te Kuiti, as I was on the main road there and we had a huge number of travellers who stopped in. “In Te Awamutu I have a different clientele - it’s mostly locals - with many coming from all over town to try our food. The takeaway store has a strong New Zealand flavour, we are proud to be Kiwi owned and operated.” A number of items that were successful on the menu in Te Kuiti are also proving successful here. “We sell genuine kiwi-styled burgers with a decent meat pattie, salad, beetroot etc on a toasted bun.” A great range of toasted sandwiches are also available, each with their own special names and chock-a-block with fillings. “People have been quick to find out about them and the numbers we sell are increasing each week.” His varieties of hot chips

April deluge fools gauge

135TC026/07

April’s rainfall ‘fooled’ even Te Awamutu weather watcher, Paul Hobbs. Mr Hobbs says at 55mm it was one of the lowest totals he has recorded for the month. “I take the records at 9am or close to it each day, so the extra 54.5mm that fell on the 30th was recorded as in May. It would have doubled the total for the month of April.” This year’s total for January-March was 317.5mm, about 10% below average.

KiwiSaver - friend or foe? Online system looks after

All accounting work for rentals through to complex structures

KiwiSaver is a work-based savings scheme scheduled to start in a few weeks - a government initiative designed to encourage New Zealanders to prepare for their retirement administered by the IRD through the PAYE system. As of July 1, 2007, it will be compulsory for all employers to make KiwiSaver available to both new and existing employees. Despite coming into effect in a little over six weeks, information about the scheme from the IRD has so far been limited and the major media campaign is not due to start until the end of this month. This will effectively leave a window of just a few weeks in which the IRD intend to educate and prepare over 170,000 New Zealand employers for the introduction of the scheme. Stephen Gibson of Kelly & Bryant Chartered Accountants believes that it would be unrealistically optimistic to assume that all employers will be ready for KiwiSaver come July with the IRD’s media campaign being rolled out so late. In his opinion, ‘it is a recipe for anarchy.’

the scheme or to answer any questions that they may have, employers may face lengthy telephone queues when phoning IRD helplines, have problems calculating employees’ contribution deductions or face penalties for non-compliance, to name but a few. Mr Gibson urges employers to be pro-active and start preparing for the introduction of KiwiSaver now. He says that if KiwiSaver brings about as many teething problems and headaches for businesses as GST when it was first introduced back in 1986, then employers would be wise to act now. Staff at Kelly & Bryant have been involved in training on KiwiSaver as far back as October last year and are therefore well-prepared to provide assistance to both employers and employees and answer any queries they may have. Kelly & Bryant are also running free KiwiSaver information sessions for both their clients and the general public. Their next seminar is tomorrow. Phone the team at Kelly & Bryant on 871 3176 for more details.

He says that while Kelly & Bryant has been working hard over the past few months to educate clients and the wider public about KiwiSaver, the general impression is that most employers see it as simply an extra cost and burden to their business. Contrary to much popular belief, the introduction of KiwiSaver will not impose any direct monetary cost on employers, provided they comply with their legal obligations. Legally, employers are only required to do two things: Number one, they must make KiwiSaver available to both new and existing employees; Number two, they must deduct employees’ contributions from their pay and forward them to the IRD along with their normal monthly PAYE schedule. Mr Gibson believes that ‘if employers choose to stick their heads in the sand’ now then further down the track they may find KiwiSaver costing more money, time, effort and stress than necessary. Not only will they be ill-prepared to give their employees assistance with

What is ‘Cullen’s’ KiwiSaver? The basic idea is that by opting into KiwiSaver, New Zealanders contribute either 4% or 8% of earnings to be invested in a fund to provide for retirement. There will be a number of KiwiSaver scheme providers to choose from, with typically a choice of five to eight managed fund products within each scheme. A managed fund is an investment vehicle which pools investors’ money to invest in different types of assets.

Payroll and IRD needs

Many owners of small businesses are already struggling with the requirements of payrolls, and are dreading the introduction of KiwiSaver, according to Smart Business Live regional sales manager Mark Pitts-Brown. Coming from his own business background he knows just how difficult and time consuming it can be looking after payroll, even for a few staff. He says the product he offers would have been just the answer when he ran a Waitomo based tourism business with his wife. Now he is able to bring that product to the business people of the greater Waikato - and almost immediately see the relief when they realise how simple and affordable it is. Smart Business Live’s point of difference over other systems is that it is web-based. There are two products - Smart Books (the GST accounting package) and Smart Payroll (incorporating KiwiSaver). Using Internet technology means Smart Business Live does not have to rely on discs and manual installations and upgrades, the latter often at extra cost. Clients are able to freely

Upgrades can include software improvements and/or changes in Government requirements. Designed for businesses of any size, Smart Payroll it is particularly attractive to smaller operations because there is a one-off establishment fee and then a per-staff member ongoing cost. Businesses with five or less staff attract an IRD subsidy, already built into the fee structure.

Smart Business Live is a PAYE intermediary, which means they deal with IRD directly and look after the filing of schedules. The business has two proven partners; Datacom - New Zealand’s biggest payroll provider - and ASB - providing proven banking engine technology. Mr Pitts-Brown says the packages give employers ‘peace of mind’, knowing that staff are paid, PAYE and other IRD requirements are taken care of, all leave is tracked accurately,

and at a reasonable cost. Part of the service is free on-site training to make sure clients operate the package correctly. Being an online system, also means business owners can run the packages even when not on site. This is useful when holidaying or if people own more than one business. Potential clients can call 0800 588000 to arrange a free demonstration, or check the SmartBusinessLive.co.nz website.

IMPRESSIVE FORM shown by Zig-Zag Wallace during training in New Zealand prior to heading the Oceania Continental Championships was borne out by his outstanding efforts in Photo supplied. Apia, Samoa. at the tournament, his semifinal fight was the best fight of the Oceania’s.” Schuster was also impressed by the level at which the Samoans are fighting. “They have really stepped up. Samoa caused an upset in the light welterweight division, taking out Australian Todd Kidd.

Kidd has a number three world ranking. We will be inviting the Samoan team over in a couple of months and hope to get a rematch for Zig-Zag,” Schuster said. Boxing NZ returned with six gold, one silver and one bronze - including four golds from the women.

Te Awamutu Sports boxer Zig-Zag Wallace made a big impression on Boxing New Zealand officials at the Oceania Continental Championships held recently in Samoa. Although the gold medal he went for turned into bronze, the experience was invaluable and the reports that came back about his performances were glowing. His final fight in the light heavyweight semi-final against eventual gold medallist Samoan Farani Tauu’I was described by New Zealand judge and referee Paul McSharry as the fight of the tournament. “Basically, Taau’I was a fighter and Zig-Zag was the boxer,” McSharry said. “He had to box for the whole four rounds and it was the best boxing I have ever seen him do. It was a high scoring bout, the final score 40-30, but it should’ve been more like 31-30. It was down to the wire” Boxing NZ manager and former New Zealand boxing coach, Henry Schuster was also full of praise for Wallace’s effort. He echoed the sentiments expressed by Paul McSharry. “Zig-Zag was straight down the middle from the start of the fight and continued right to the end. It was the best boxing I have ever seen from him,” Schuster said. “He was very unlucky not to win. His attitude was great. He did everything Billy (Meehan, Boxing NZ national coach) and I asked of him - and more. He has the will and determination in the ring and the heart to carry it through. Out of all the bouts

Trip of lifetime for cricket-loving family Mingling with Black Caps, beating Aussies, swimming with turtles, limbo dancing among highlights Te Awamutu resident Jane Sinclair and her sons, Daniel and Peter West, recently returned from a trip to the World Cricket Cup in West Indies that they will treasure as long as they live. The Black Caps made it through to the semifinals and while they were soundly beaten by Sri Lanka, there was still plenty of great cricket for their Te Awamutu fans (who also included College music teacher George Brooks and former College teacher, John Creek) to cherish. While no-one could live with the rampant Australian team at this World Cup, Jane Sinclair and her sons were at least part of a ‘black shirts’ victory over their Aussie counterparts in a grudge match between Aussie and Kiwi fans. “We organised a supporters’ game of cricket on a flat piece of land, a rare commodity as Grenada is very hilly, by our hotel between some Australian fans and our tour group,” she says. “I am pleased to report that the black shirts prevailed (despite an average age double that of the opposition), much to our yellow shirted neighbours dismay! It was even reported on the local radio station. Ms Sinclair penned the following letter, which aptly describes their trip: “It was a long held dream of mine to follow the Black Caps to the World Cup in the West Indies and so it is hard to imagine that I have actually been and done it.” After a very arduous 48 hours of travel via Los Angeles and Jamaica, we gratefully arrived in Grenada to balmy evening temperatures, gentle breezes and ‘rum punch’. It didn’t take long to realise that we were in a country obsessed with cricket. There were televisions showing the games in the banks, supermarkets and shopping malls. And if you had to travel by local bus (14 seater Toyota vans) then it was on the radio so you didn’t miss out on the action! Grenada had been devastated by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 (90% of the houses lost their roofs) and, although they had made huge inroads into reconstruction, this legacy was still very plain to see. Grenadians were a warm and welcoming people and we soon adopted the local catch phrase of ‘no problem’ and slipped comfortably into the slower pace of life, necessary as the days were hot (35°) and humid. A mandatory swim in the luke warm turquoise blue sea was the perfect antidote. Our first game was at the impressive new Grenada National Stadium against

DREAM MEETING: Brothers Peter (left) and Daniel West with New Zealand batsman Hamish Marshall after a Black Caps practice session in the West Indies. Photo supplied Sri Lanka (the super 8 group match). A local steel band welcomed us and set the tone for a lively, noisey encounter. Much has been made of the lack of crowds in the stadiums, but you have to keep in mind that Grenada is a country with a total population of only 100,000. The stadium had seating for 15,000 and they held six games there. At $US100 a seat, it was hardly surprising that they couldn’t fill the stadium for every game. There were 12,700 at the final game at that ground, which they were so proud of. One morning we were delighted to be allowed to attend a Black Caps practice session and mingled with the players afterwards - a real highlight for us. Unfortunately, when they had their ‘bad day at the office’ in the semi-final against Sri Lanka we had to watch it at a sports bar in Barbados (Jamaica was too far to travel to). I scored all the games that we attended (and watched on TV). So it was with interest that I could look back and realise that right up until the 41st over we had more

runs than Sri Lanka - a shame that we had lost nine wickets! We found tremendous support for the Black Caps through out our stay in the West Indies. I think the locals were genuinely disappointed for us when we didn’t make the final. When we weren’t at the cricket we savoured the local culture, food and sights. Grenada is known as the ‘spice island’ and it was fascinating to see nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and all spice growing and to see how they were harvested and processed. We visited a rum factory with its still working over 200 year old (1785) water wheel and tasted their 75% alcohol rum. That cleared out my sinuses! I forget that the West Indies isn’t a country but made up of several different sovereign states. This was highlighted for me when I had to deal in three different currencies in one day - US dollars, Eastern Caribbean dollars and Barbadian dollars. It got very messy with change! The day we flew to St Lucia for the semifinal between South Africa and Australia

we started at 3am with a wake-up phone call, caught a plane, flew Barbados to St Lucia, had a two hour bus journey to the stadium, arriving just in time to see the first ball bowled. Then did the return trip getting back to our hotel at 11pm knackered. A real shame for the South Africans making the same trip that the game was all but over within the first 10 overs of the day. After three weeks of hot relentless sunshine we could not believe our bad luck to have a rainy day for the final. We were surprised that the game was still going to be 38 overs long and it became apparent that this was too long when they ran out of daylight at the end of the game. During the game, when Jayasuriya was giving Australia’s total a good nudge and had just smashed three successive fours in an over, it was amazing to see the whole stadium erupt. On their feet, cheering, flag waving and amongst them there were two huge blocks of ‘yellow’ absolutely stock still! Priceless as the saying goes. It was a real shame that Sri Lanka were dealt such an un-level playing field in the final and the finish was such a fiasco. However, the closing ceremony was quite a spectacle with 300 people playing steel drums, dancers, stilt walkers and an amazing fireworks display. After all the excitement I would have to say that swimming with the turtles on our final day in Barbados and attempting limbo dancing that night would have to be a couple of my personal highlights from the trip.”

MR BEAN’S HOLIDAY PG Te Awamutu Courier and CDs4nix (formerly Tracs) give readers the chance to celebrate Pink performing at Auckland’s Vector Arena with The Androids on June 10 by winning a copy of the new CD ‘I’m Not Dead’. Kiwi fans of Pennsylvanian born pop-rock princess Pink have been served up a none too subtle warning to get in quick for tickets to her forthcoming Auckland gig. Unprecedented demand in Australia has seen a further three shows added across the ditch, resulting in her one off New Zealand gig being put back until June 10 from it’s original date at the end of May. Her popularity is unquestionable. Having given us such great albums as ‘Can’t Take Me Home’, ‘Missunderstood’, ‘Try This’ and of course ‘I’m Not Dead’ which in turn have spawned heaps of top singles including ‘Gonna Make Ya Move(Don’t Stop)’,’There You Go’, ‘Most Girls’ through to ‘U+Ur Hand’, ‘Nobody Knows’, ‘Dear Mr. President’ and Leave me Alone (I’m Lonely)’; her biggest problem will be in what to leave out and not disappoint her loyal legions of fans. Support act The Androids are best known for their hit single ‘Do It With Madonna’ and have served up here ‘She Comes’, ‘Brand New Life’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love’ to sweeten the pot. Pick up Pink’s album and catch her live to witness her spellbinding ability to render rebelliousness in all the many colours of the

Smokefreerockquest heats this weekend The creative minds of Waikato youth are focused right now on this year’s Smokefreerockquest, with the local heats set for 12 noon on Sunday, May 20 at Hamilton Boys High School. And while writing and performing two original songs is the main challenge - bands also need a name. Captain Corrupt and Yum Yum are just two of the creative names from the bands entered so far from Waikato this year. Agreeing on a name is a starting point for the negotiation skills that the teen musicians learn as part of the Smokefreerockquest process. “This event is about performance - that means it imposes a deadline,” says Smokefreerockquest director Glenn Common. “The kids in these bands might have dozens of ideas for songs, but when Smokefreerockquest comes along they actually have to finish two

songs and they have to be ready to entertain their peers down in the mosh pit. It takes guts - it is the real performance experience that sorts out those who will succeed in the New Zealand music industry - as many of our past winners have proven.” Entry forms went out to all secondary and intermediate schools early last term, and the entries have already topped last year. The Waikato finals are at 8pm on Friday, June 1 at Founders Theatre, tickets are $15 from Ticketdirect or $20 at the door. Over the winter heats and finals are held in 25 centres around New Zealand, and footage from several of these events will be filmed by music and youth culture television channel C4. The national finals of Smokefreerockquest will be held this year at the Bruce Mason Centre in Auckland’s North Shore

on October 20th. At stake is first prize of musical equipment from NZ Rockshop to the value of $10,000, and The Edge Airplay Award with NZ On Air where the winning band’s music and video are recorded with guaranteed airplay. Other awards reinforce the key Smokefreerockquest aim of encouraging students to write and perform their own music. Individual prizes are awarded for best lyrics, best vocals, women’s musicianship, the best song and the best published music journalism. A scholarship to the Tai Poutini contemporary music course is awarded for musicianship, along with selected bands being matched with past successes in a mentoring programme supported by the Music Industry Commissi on and the Ministry of Education. More information is available from the Smokfreerockquest website www.theset.co.nz
