BRIEFLY Prisoners still on the loose

Dairy payout could hit $6 next year says AGRI Fund

DAVID JOHN SAMUEL PETER BODY BADAWAI Police are asking for help from the public to apprehend two inmates who escaped from Waikeria Prison Youth Unit in the early hours of Thursday. David John Body (18) and Samuel Peter Badawai (17) are considered dangerous and should not be approached. Body has connections to the King Country and Badawai to the Bay of Plenty. It is believed they stole a black NissanTiida from an Otorohanga Road property, plus a shotgun and .22 rifle. The car was recovered in New Plymouth near where a van was stolen. The van has since been recovered in Te Kuiti. Phone Te Awamutu Police 872 0100 with any information that could assist in the recapture of the prisoners.

Basketball semi hosted by TA Waikato Pistons’ impressive end-of-season run has seen them claim a home semi-final in New Zealand’s premier basketball competition, which will be played in Te Awamutu this Saturday night. The home team finished second on the table and take on third placed Nelson Giants at 7.30pm in the Te Awamutu Events Centre, looking to make the best of three final against either top side Harbour Heat or Bay Hawks. The Pistons beat Heat 98-90 in their last game of the round to edge the Giants into third on points difference.

Strong commodity prices could see the dairy payout hit $6 per kilogram of milk solids in 2008. AGRI Private Capital Fund (AGRI Fund) director Andrew Watters said Fonterra’s announcement last month of a 27% increase in its 2007-2008 payout to $5.53 per kilogram reflects a growing demand for agriculture products worldwide. The recently announced increased dairy payout is expected to deliver more than $1.5 billion to dairy farmers, or approximately $3.75 billion into the rural economy. “Rapid population growth, a rising middle class in Asia wanting high protein Western diets and increased bio-fuel production is expected to drive commodity prices higher in the next decade.” Speaking at the agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek, Mr Watters said these trends were expected to create even more demand for New Zealand’s agri-

cultural produce. “In China, revenues from sales of milk beverages, cheese and desserts, and yoghurt are expected to grow annually by 22%, 38% and 31% respectively over the next three years.” Global milk consumption is currently increasing by around 3%, roughly New Zealand’s entire production, every year and New Zealand’s share of the international dairy market continues to grow with milk-based products now making up almost a third of commodity exports by value. “The United States is the world’s largest exporter of milk powder,” Mr Watters said. “But grains are used to feed dairy herds and increased ethanol production means that large tracts of current arable land are being used to grow bio-mass for fuel, not for food. “This has resulted in grain feed costs rising so sharply that expanding milk production in the

Attention local ladies: you have the country’s most eligible rural bachelor on your back doorstep. A fantastic attitude and consistently good performances throughout Fieldays saw wildcard finalist Paul Slater pick up the coveted Golden Gumboot trophy and the title of 2007 Fieldays Rural Bachelor of the Year. Slater (23) is a herd manager on Neil Findsen’s Te Pahu farm. He, says that his perfect woman is “self confident and honest with a great personality, bright eyes and a big smile.” He describes himself as a friendly and likeable, but normal farming kiwi bloke who enjoys a good laugh.” His ready smile made him popular with the Fieldays crowds as he won the Stihl chainsaw, Hyundai, cutting horse and Waikato Draught heats held around the Fieldays site. He also wowed the audience at the Ale House in Te Awamutu on Thursday night and was declared the unofficial winner of the karaoke session after his rendition of Pearl Jam’s ‘Last Kiss’. Fieldays Rural Bachelor of the Year judge, Olwyn Downing, says the

seven 2007 bachelors were very evenly matched. “They all performed well. Their enthusiasm and rural skills made it difficult to choose a winner.” The Rural Bachelor finalists have already carried away prize packs including gear from Swanndri and Skellerup, vouchers from The BBQ Factory and Waikato Draught beer. Slater will add to this haul with more prizes from STIHL, Swanndri, The BBQ Factory and Skellerup in addition to a seven day trip to the Gold Coast, including luxury accommodation and car hire. The other wild card entrant in the 2007 Rural Bachelor competition was Rob Jolly from Oparau. He showed he was ‘licensed to grill’ as he picked up a win in the BBQ Factory heat. The CycleTime People’s Choice Award was presented to Gareth Barnes, a 24 year old stallion manager from Matamata. ture sector, are going to be in a box position in the next decade, and we look forward to being a part of that.” AGRI Fund was launched last month by rural syndicate specialist Agricultural Investments Limited (AGInvest) and fund manager BT Funds Management. Mr Watters is also a director of AGInvest. AGRI Fund is seeking to raise more than $60 million to invest in a portfolio of quality New Zealand farms and agri-businesses, and intends on investing 50% of the funds into high potential pastoral farms and ordinarily 50% in attractive agri-businesses. An article in the Courier earlier this month outlined the likely positive spin-offs to the local economy from Fonterra’s predicted 2007-08 payout of $5.53 per kg of milk solids. For rural service towns like Te Awamutu the impact of the dairy payout is significant.

United States is not profitable, even at existing prices. This is driving not just dairy prices but the price of other primary food sources, which is a very positive signal to investors in the New Zealand agriculture sector.” Mr Watters said price adjustments were expected to continue in the next decade as interest grows in renewable sources of energy to lessen the dependence on foreign oil. BT equities and property portfolio manager Paul Richardson shares Andrew Watters confidence. “We are looking at the agricultural sector being responsible for driving higher standards of living across New Zealand, which is something that has not been talked about until now. Long gone are the days when agriculture was referred to as the oldeconomy. “Agriculture, and the businesses that service the agricul-

It’s time to get rid of the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder. In my opinion this label is given to anxious children and children who have suffered a break in bonding. There are many books written to refute the concept that it is a neurological disorder.

The criteria for diagnosis are so contradictory they are ludicrous. Children given this label are judged, stereotyped and given drugs. Remove the label from these children. MEGAN SIMMONDS Abridged

Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance helicopter was dispatched to Wharepapa South on Thursday afternoon to retrieve the victim of a farming accident involving a tractor rollover. According to emergency respondents at the scene, a young man and woman were using the tractor to transport the carcass of an animal when the tractor lost traction and slipped down a grade, coming to rest upside down in a drain. Due to the inaccessibility of the area, emergency vehicles could not reach the site and both victims had to be walked out to a more suitable spot. The man sustained an ankle injury and was transported by St John Ambulance, but the woman was flown to Waikato Hospital with multiple injuries, in the care of Emergency Department doctors and a St John Ambulance advanced paramedic.

Ronnie Fitzell gained plenty of personal satisfaction from his involvement in the CURE-CanTeen fundraising night held at Te Awamutu Events Centre. Ronnie offered to have his head shaved to raise sponsorship money, and good friend Melinda Bird went into the boxing ring, through a connection with the Henry Bennett Centre in Hamilton, where Ronnie’s father Bill Fitzell works. They were happy to become involved because they were aware of the great work CanTeen does with teenagers living with cancer, and because Ronnie lost his mum, Val and grandmother, Phyllis Robinson to cancer. “I know what people go through - the rigmarole and the hardship. Having kids of my own it is not hard to imagine what it’s like when it happens to your teenager.” Ronnie says being involved with the event was an uplifting experience. “It was fantastic to be part of raising such a great amount of money.” If the event is repeated in two years time (which organisers have indicated could happen) Ronnie says he will throw his ‘hat’ (and body) in the ring this time. He says he admired the courage of his friend in entering the ring. He also enjoyed helping her train for her fight and is keen to put his name forward for a bout.

Proud to give blood By Dean Taylor Last Thursday was World Blood Donor Day - and I am proud to say I was at Hamilton’s Blood Donor Centre giving my 76th donation. The staff made a big fuss of the donors, shouting us early donors a nice breakfast and generally being very attentive. But then they are always attentive and pleasant - its altogether a pretty good experience. I started donating as a 16-yearold at Te Awamutu College. The motive was simple. Back then you had to go down to the St John’s Ambulance Hall in George Street and after donating and getting a few free biscuits, you could wag school for a bit and when you got back say you felt a bit faint after the experience. But donating became a habit and for many years I gave whole blood in Te Awamutu, Hamilton and Thames. In the past few

years I have been donating plasma - a slightly longer and more complicated procedure, but painless and more useful for the medical profession. Plasma and platelet donors are in demand because more can be done with the donation - plus you can donate more regularly. I currently donate every three weeks. The New Zealand Blood Service is always looking for more donors. Workplace co-ordinators are sought to help get groups together from the workplace to donate together when the mobile service is in town. The co-ordinator can plan ahead so staff can take the time to donate without too much inconvenience to the workplace. Individuals are welcome to sign up to donate - either by visiting the mobile service when they are in Te Awamutu or attending at the Blood Donor Centre at Waikato Hospital. It is a simple

visit as the centre has its own entrance and free parking. If you are healthy, over 16 and want to help people in need - then I recommend it. Whole blood donations take less than half-an-hour in total including that precious recovery time where you get to relax and have a cuppa. Plasma donations take about 30 to 60 minutes depending on the person. A machine does the work so you can sip coffee and read a magazine throughout the process. Platelets take longer, but my observation is that the physical procedure is similar to plasma, except you have time to get into a novel. Recovery is simpler, because the plasma or platelets are separated from the blood, and the remainder returned to your system. To find out more or make an appointment call the Hamilton Centre on 0800 882233.

Transpower should negotiate renewable land rental agreements with all land-owners along the path of the proposed Whakamaru-to-Auckland transmission route instead of demanding easements in perpetuity from individuals, according to Waikato Federated Farmers. Peter Buckley, president of Waikato Federated Farmers, said it was not acceptable to land owners along the route for Transpower to use land for the transmission of electricity without regularly paying proper and realistic costs for doing so. “Those payments should fairly compensate land-owners for the use of their land, for any devaluation of it because of the transmission lines and pylons, and for any loss of income from that

land,” he said. “The land-owners have to look after the land, maintain it and pay rates on it, and simply giving Transpower an easement right to come onto the land any time they like, without making some annual payment for the use of the land, is not fair or acceptable.” Mr Buckley said Federated Farmers was not opposed to electricity line upgrades, or new pylons going across farm land, if that was shown to be the best method of getting electricity from Whakamaru to Auckland. “We suggest that proper standardised rental agreements be worked out, perhaps with a right of renewal after negotiation every five years,” he said. “This will mean the true cost

of electricity delivery, through land not owned by the network operator, is charged, and the real costs of generation and delivery can then be compared with other forms of delivery. “Transpower says that is too difficult to do, but that’s rubbish. Telecom does it for their phone transmission towers, and so do the companies building wind farms. “The suggested Transpower route from Whakamaru to Auckland involves less than 300 land owners, and one-off payments are not what we want.” Mr Buckley said there were no guarantees on land use or values in the future, and single payments made now could not possibly cover for future eventualities.

A combination of Scottish heritage and life in New Zealand is reflected in Hilary Ramage’s current exhibition at Gallery 8. Mrs Ramage was born and educated in Edinburgh, where she went on to attend courses in art at the Edinburgh College of Art and St Andrew’s University. She also attended regular summer schools and various printmaking and painting workshops. In 1997 she immigrated to New Zealand with her husband and settled at Pirongia. Since then she has tutored at the Waikato Society of Artists and has facilitated art for adults with learning disabilities. She has also set up the Baffin Street Gallery in Pirongia. She sells prints on behalf of around eight other North Island printmakers, a Scottish and a Dutch printmaker and a Canadian assemblage artist, as well as several of her own works. Helping organisation that gives so much to community St John ambulance officers, calltakers, dispatchers and their fellow St John members are very humble. They’re usually the last to talk about the difference they make to communities all over New Zealand - 24/7, 365 days a year. Instead they quietly go about their work, providing an essential service and care to the people of New Zealand. These people often perform extraordinary feats of courage and compassion - often above and beyond the call of duty, often in difficult circumstances and often against the odds. Whether it’s going out in stormy seas to provide medical care to a stricken yachtie, attending an emergency scene or simply holding someone’s hand when they need it - it’s the St John way to put other people first. The St John Appeal, from June 17 to 24 June, is an ideal time for the people of New Zealand to contribute to the work St John does - so they can keep helping us. St John’s 12,000 members, both paid and volunteer, provide a wide range of health and community care services all over New Zealand in addition to ambulance. These services include emergency care and first aid services at events, first aid training, first aid kit sales, St John Youth programme, and a wealth of community care

Entry forms for the competition are available from the Te Awamutu Public Library and from your local primary schools or can be downloaded from the Altrusa Club of Te Awamutu’s website www.teawamutu.net\altrusa. Entries close on July 10. The story writing competition has three age group levels with prizes for each age group. Each level will have a grand prizewinner and two runner-up prizes. Each runner-up will receive a book to the approximate value of $25 and the grand prizewinner will receive $100 worth of books for themselves and $100 worth of books for their school library. Each age group grand prize winning entry will be read on the ‘Bunty in the Morning’ show on Classic Hits 98.6 ZHFM during literacy week from Sep-

tember 3-7. Spokesperson for Te Awamutu Altrusa Club, Leanne Milligan says that the aim of this competition is to encourage children with their writing. “Literacy skills are important to everyone regardless of their chosen career path and we should encourage our young people in their efforts with reading, writing and numeracy. “Excellent literacy skills open doors for people and Altrusa wants to promote this so that our young people have the best possible start.” Altrusa Clubs throughout the country are organising a number of literacy projects during September, International Literacy month. Beiyi Xue combine with violist Zhongxian Jin and cellist Jiaxin Chen to produce a rich and mature sound. They bring a perfect blend of academic complexity and unique sonic beauty of the close and intimate chamber music atmosphere to its audience.

The Aroha String Quartet is committed to presenting string quartet works of classical and New Zealand contemporary composers. Their programme in Te Awamutu will include Shostakovich, Tan Dun and Brahms. The concert begins at 7.30pm. Door sales available.

Concert to benefit Waikato Hospice The Gallagher Group Hamilton Civic Choir has been performing great music for Hamilton audiences for over 60 years, so is all the more proud to be able to count among its members very talented young singers who will carry this tradition on. Sopranos Erica Tate, Katie Johnson and Amber Evemy are recent recruits who thoroughly enjoy their participation and the music the choir performs. The choir’s focus on the future is also seen in its Associate Artist scheme, founded last year, which sponsors young musicians of promise, who then perform with the choir. Last year’s Associate Artist was June Dams,

soprano, and this year’s is a cellist, Yotam Levy. All of these musicians will be taking part in the choir’s next concert, a recital of sacred music by Kodaly, Mendelssohn and Rheinberger. Directed by Rachael Griffiths-Hughes and accompanied on the organ by Francis Cowan, the choir performs at St Peter’s Cathedral, Victoria St, at 7.30pm on Saturday, June 23 (with June Dams singing arias by Bellini and Puccini) and 2.30pm on Sunday June 24 (with Yotam Levy). Tickets ($25) will be available at the door or from choir members, and for each ticket sold $5 will be donated to the Waikato Hospice Appeal. Children and students: admission by donation.

Maddy magnificent in Canterbury Tour Teenager primed for Australian assignment By Colin Thorsen Maddy Brunton enhanced her rapidly growing reputation finishing third on general classification in the three-day Canterbury Junior Road Cycling Tour. The Te Awamutu Sports club rider celebrated her selection in the New Zealand Under-17 team to Australia by also placing third in both the sprint ace and time trial. She finished only 33 seconds down on tour winner Sarah Martin, with second placed Harriet Smithies at 14 seconds. Martin was originally selected in the New Zealand Under-17 team but has since pulled out. “It was all pretty close, only 49 seconds covered the whole NZU17 team,” says Brunton. “It was really decided on the time trial on day one.” Brunton was the best placed of the three Waikato riders in the national team bound for Australia. Her third (time trial) placing proved to be her best stage finish, although she did feature prominently throughout the tour with three fourths and a fifth in the road stages. A stoked Brunton commented: “I couldn’t time trial or sprint to help myself not that long ago. “Brian (Fleck) has been great helping me out with coaching tips. “I certainly had a thing in my head about time trialling and sprinting

He’s a legend” It is reflected in her vast improvement since the Te Awamutu Junior Tour when Martin beat her by over three minutes in the time trial. Less than a minute separated the two riders in Christchurch.

Ian Taylor and Shirley Lynch headed a field of 23 teams in the third winter tournament staged by Te Awamutu Bowling Club. The victorious Cambridge club members were the only team to emerge with a maximum four wins.

Bill Barwood and Barry Wilcox (Hamilton City) were second with 3½ wins. A countback was required to decide third place. Honours went to Pirongia’s Merle Wyllie and Nevenka Drsnin with three wins.

Sports serve warning: Not just in ‘top six’ championship round to make up numbers

DON’T ARGUE: Te Awamutu Sports’ Chiefs prop Nathan White on the rampage against 1700718AD Morrinsville Sports.

By Colin Thorsen Ecolab Te Awamutu Sports opened their Waikato premier rugby ‘top six’ campaign with a thrilling 32-31 win over Morrinsville Sports. First five Waylon Tangohau landed a penalty from wide out on the 22 in injury time to get his team home at Albert Park on Saturday. Te Awamutu Sports again showed tremendous character and tenacity when having their backs to the wall. They trailed 22-14 with 10 minutes to play, after Morrinsville Sports took the lead for the first time in the match, and responded with a well constructed try, conversion and penalty. For the second week running Te Awamutu Sports’ supporters had plenty to cheer about as they ran in four quality tries to vindicate their inclu-

sion in the Haswell Catley Trophy round. It was a vitally important morale boosting win ahead of tougher games starting with Fraser Tech in Hamilton next Saturday, followed by Hamilton Old Boys (home), Hautapu (home) and Hamilton Marist (away). The question now facing Kerry Eynon’s team is can they kick on and add two or three of the above scalps to that of Morrinsville Sports? Peter Bain reports that Te Awamutu Sports made an outstanding start to the match, stringing together phase after phase inside the opposition 22. The forwards showed tremendous control and patience at rucks and mauls. The pressure told when winger Artemus Mudaliar crossed unopposed in the corner for the first of his brace of

tries, converted by Tangohau. Sports went straight back on the attack and it was left wing Josh Adams turn to score for a 12-0 lead. A poor attempted clearing kick, which skied infield, gifted Morrinsville their first try. A further Tangohau penalty stretched Sports’ lead to 12-7, only to have Morrinsville score a try late in the half to reduce the deficit to 15-14. The second half deadlock was broken by a spectacular try to Sports after Adams retrieved a kick inside his own half. He set off on a long, diagonal run beating many would-be-tacklers to link up with lock Paul Wheeler, who showed a good turn of pace to score handy to the posts. Tangohau converted for a 22-14 scoreline. Never say die Morrinsville again hit back with a converted try to close within one

point. They followed it up with a penalty to take the lead for the first time, 24-22. With less than 10 minutes on the clock, Morrinsville looked to have the game in the bag after scoring their fourth try to lead 31-22. But Sports are made of sterner stuff this year. They launched an attack, found a hole in the defence and Mudaliar scored his second try. Tangohau added the extras for Sports to trail by two points, 31-29, with three minutes remaining. From the restart Sports attacked and were awarded a penalty. They opted to kick for touch and, from the ensuing lineout, Morrinsville again infringed - this time close enough for Sports to take a shot at goal. With time up, Tangohau kicked the pressurecooker, match winning goal.

Ohaupo in seemingly unassailable lead It would be a brave person to bet against Ohaupo defending their subsidiary round darts title with only two matches remaining. Ohaupo are the only team with an unblemished record after downing previously unbeaten Warriors 10-7 in round 10. The playing through champions then came through their toughest remaining assignment in round 11, serving up the same medicine to Arrows, winning 10-7. Ohaupo are now faced with the relatively straight forward task of beating lowly ranked Allsorts and Nomads to clinch back-to-back wins in the competition. Three 180s were thrown over the past fortnight, with Arrows’ Ken McDowall responsible for two of them. He now has four in this season’s subsidiary round alone. McDowall also threw 104 finish, 160 start, 130 start and six tons. His team-mate Marc Webb chalked up his second 180 in three weeks. Round 11 results: Pirongia Hotel 9, Riff Raff 8; Waikeria 15, RSA Allsorts 2; RSA 11, Nomads Too 6; Rebels 14, Nomads 3; Odds & Bods 13, Hobbits 4; Ohaupo 10, Arrows 7.

Kevin Bloody Wilson on the road

CINEMA SCENE dragonfly soldiers, giant trolls and a treehouse fortress. In Terabithis, the two friends let their imagination run wild and control their destiny, far away from school bullies and the pressures of adolescence.

Bridge to Terabithia Jess is misunderstood. Despite Jess’ talents as an artist, the school bullies pick on him, his father belittles his dreams, and his four sisters invade his space in the family’s cramped house. Jess’ bleak world changes when Leslie moves into the house next door. Bright, creative and outspoken, Leslie also finds herself an outsider in their school. Soon the two are thick as thieves, spending their after school hours exploring the woods beyond their backyards and on the other side of a creek, which Leslie deems the kingdom of Terabithia. Here, they create their own magical world, complete with a Dark Master and his minions,

Becoming Jane In English society of 1795 marrying for love was a fool’s game. Money made this class-obsessed world go round. Mr and Mrs Austen, with their youngest daughter to wed, were only too aware of this. But their Jane is not for turning, blessed with a feisty independent spirit the twenty-year-old sees a world beyond that of class and commerce, beyond pride and prejudice.

She wants to marry for love. Even so, her parents want what is best for Jane – a wealthy, well-appointed husband. This could be Mr Wisley, nephew to the local aristocrat, the very formidable and very rich Lady Gresham. But despite their best efforts and intentions, Jane turns down all entreaties. They she meets the young Irishman Tom Lefroy. He is a trainee lawyer, visiting Hampshire from London, accompanied by Jane’s brother Henry. He is handsome and intelligent and poor. He also disdains the unsophisticated country folk. But this young rake finds more than he bargained for in the precocious talent and ferocious independence of Jane Austen.

Twenty years or so ago a young electrician with too much time on his hands turned to changing the words in other folks songs and writing a few of his own and the legend of Kevin Bloody Wilson (not his real name - surprise

surprise!!) was born. Without the aid of radio or TV coverage (due to the explicit crude sexual nature of his songs and general humour) he has built up a loyal following all over the world. You’ll likely hear KBW standards such as ‘Santa Claus’ and ‘Living Next Door To Alan’ and - oh crikey, we can’t print most of their titles; but whether he’s singing about what a legend ‘Nigel’ is, what a master ‘Mick’ is, cats that keep coming back, questions to ask about first dates or about miners missing their wives, one thing’s for sure - the crowd will be singing right along with him. KBW is back, and in the words of that great philosopher..well somebody anyway.. life might not be the party you hoped for, but you’re here so you might as well dance!!. To be in to win simply put your name, address and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized envelope, address it to the ‘Kevin Bloody Wilson CD Competition’ and make sure it reaches our office by 5pm Friday.

170TC005-07

Te Awamutu Courier and CDs4nix (formerly Tracs) give readers the chance to celebrate the return of Kevin Bloody Wilson to the Hamilton stage by winning a copy of his new CD ‘Dilligaf’. Kevin Bloody Wilson plays Hamilton’s Founders Theatre on Saturday, June 30. It is Strictly Absolutely Definitely Positively R18. Want a great night out? Fancy a few laughs? In fact a good few laughs. Don’t mind a few swear words? In fact a good few swear words. Then whet your appetite for his forthcoming tour by picking up a copy of the CD that bears the name of his last tour (Dilligaf) and features as it’s last song the name of this tour (Disgraceland). It also features a raucous live version of ‘House Of The Rising Flood’, ‘Missing The Missus’ and the ‘Shane Warne Song’, as well as six other songs that will have the politically correct brigade up in arms and fans roaring with laughter and crying out for more.
