To all who give from the heart in passionate support of Methodist Health System, we deeply appreciate your charitable gifts, volunteerism, and commitment to fostering a healthy community. Each of you is a tower of light, helping sustain Methodist’s quality services through your generous investment in our mission of compassionate care. We are gratified and humbled that Methodist Health System continues to be a treasured asset of the people and community we serve.
FROM THE FOUNDATION
It has been a historic and eventful year for us at Methodist Health
System Foundation. Methodist was the beneficiary of an extraordinary outpouring of generosity in 2007. We are deeply appreciative of every gift to help us provide quality health care. And we are blessed that Methodist Health System remains in the hearts of loyal supporters who value the well-being of the community. Thanks to thousands of Methodist donors representing every corner of our service area, our endowment fund has grown exponentially and reached a $50 million milestone this year. The Foundation received its largest single donation, a $4 million gift establishing The Pat and Pete Schenkel Charitable Fund that will sustain and improve care for Methodist’s trauma and cardiology patients. In gratitude for the family’s gift, Methodist has named the Methodist Dallas tower in honor of Pat and Pete’s 20-year legacy of serving Methodist Health System. For a third year, the Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award netted approximately $1 million. Honoring Troy Aikman, the event funded the current significant technology needs to increase survival rates and improve care for our tiniest patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Methodist Health System proudly opened the doors of the new hospital in Mansfield, dedicating a conference room to Methodist’s former President and CEO Howard M. Chase, whose vision and leadership were instrumental in the growth of our organization. Support continues to build for Methodist Mansfield through the strong relationships we have fostered. Another notable gift includes a 14-year tradition of giving to Methodist Charlton to serve low-income cancer patients. Methodist Health System Foundation welcomed Methodist Health System President and CEO Stephen L. Mansfield, Ph.D., FACHE, and Mansfield business leader Randall Canedy as new board members. Now, as we look toward opportunities to sustain and grow Methodist Health System in responsible, meaningful ways to improve our services, we thank our generous supporters who have given us the financial strength to meet future needs and continue to be a place “where life shines bright.”

“Pat and I are very proud that the gift to Methodist was a family decision,” said Pete Schenkel.“The gift will benefit over 80,000 lives in the first year alone.”
An Unprecedented Pete and Pat Schenkel (center) have presented Methodist Health System with $4 million, the largest gift in the institution’s 80-year history. The newly established Pat and Pete Schenkel Charitable Fund is designated to equally support Methodist Health System trauma and cardiology services including capital needs, programs, and educational support and training. Family members joined Pete and Pat at Methodist Dallas Medical Center to view the unveiling of the Pat and Pete Schenkel Tower on November 1, 2007.
The dedication of the Methodist Dallas Medical
Center tower to Pat and Pete Schenkel honors a gift that truly touches the heart of everyone associated with Methodist Health System. The couple has given $4 million, the largest single gift in the Foundation’s history, to establish The Pat and Pete Schenkel Charitable Fund. The fund is designated to equally support trauma and cardiology services at Methodist Health System, providing resources for capital needs, programs, and educational
support and training to ensure that Methodist’s vitally needed critical care services will continue to shine in the southern sector. “It is gratifying to see Methodist’s prominent role in the revitalization of Oak Cliff and southern Dallas County,” said Mr. Schenkel. “Pat and I are blessed to be a part of supporting the health of our entire community.” The Schenkels have been involved with Methodist Health System for over 20 years. The Level II Emergency Department at Methodist Dallas Medical Center is one of only three hospital emergency departments in Dallas to provide trauma care for over 58,000 patients a year. The Schenkels’ gift represents a marriage between Mr. Schenkel’s passion for quality health care and his support of the men and women of law enforcement. “All too frequently, we hear of Dallas police officers and other public servants being injured in the line of duty,” said Schenkel. “Many of those injured receive emergency treatment at Methodist Dallas.” “All patients suffering from trauma or critical illness require the highest level of critical care services. This gift will provide vital equipment for services such as cardiac monitoring and endoscopic procedures that will help save lives and improve patient care in the ICU,” said Ernest Dunn, M.D., medical director of Trauma Services at Methodist Health System.
The southern sector of Dallas suffers the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in Dallas County. Each year, over
26,000 patients rely on Methodist Health System for comprehensive cardiac care and rehabilitation. “The cardiology program is very important to us,” said Pat Schenkel. Both of Mrs. Schenkel’s parents died at early ages as a result of cardiovascular disease. “This gift will help bring needed research, education, equipment, and training to strengthen Methodist’s cardiology programs. Ultimately, Pete and I are hopeful it will enhance patient care.” “Methodist provides important cardiology services to this area of the city and also attracts referral patients from other areas. We are very grateful for this gift, which will allow us to upgrade our labs and equipment and improve our level of patient care,” said Edwin G. Olson, M.D., medical director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.

Event Honoring Troy Aikman Nets Over$1 Million Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, three-time Super Bowl Champion, and NFL Hall of Fame inductee Troy Aikman has been honored for his accomplishments on the field and off as a successful entrepreneur, spokesperson, sportscaster, and dedicated philanthropist. Known for his strong leadership, determination, and passionate support for children’s causes, he has made a significant mark in the Dallas community through his Troy Aikman Foundation, which establishes Aikman’s End Zone playrooms in children’s hospitals. Aikman has also been recognized for his work on behalf of the Oklahoma Red Cross, DARE, American Cancer Society, Easter Seal Society, Children’s Medical Center, Cook Children’s Medical Center of Fort Worth, United Way, and other organizations.
An Evening of Surprises In a fitting atmosphere of well wishes and personal tributes, Troy Aikman received the 2007 Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award at a gala held at the Westin Hotel in the Dallas Galleria. For a third year, the remarkable generosity of those who gathered to celebrate outstanding leadership and contributions to the community netted over $1 million to benefit Neonatal Intensive Care services at Methodist Health System. Honorary chairs Jimmy and Carl Westcott, Folsom event chairs Mark Griege and Steve Folsom, and a full line-up of special guests – including a table of Troy’s End Zone Kids from Children’s Medical Center, sponsored by Nancy Ann and Ray Hunt – helped celebrate Troy’s accomplishments and his work to help disadvantaged children. Supporting the NICU Taking the podium to speak on the significance of the evening, April Box Chamberlain, president and CEO of Methodist Health System Foundation, gave thanks to Aikman for his commitment to children and to everyone in the room for their support. “The $1 million will purchase our current technology needs in the NICU, serving more than 700 babies a year. These funds will enable us to purchase lifesaving technology to increase these babies’ survival rates even more, and provide a warm, healing environment for their care,” said Chamberlain. Pete Schenkel, chairman of the Methodist Health System Foundation board of trustees, and Stephen Mansfield, president and CEO of Methodist Health System, presented the award. In his acceptance, Aikman reflected on his gratitude that he and wife Rhonda were blessed with healthy children and expressed his appreciation for the honor. “For me, it is doubly rewarding,” said Aikman. “I’m humbled to be recognized alongside extraordinary leaders such as Nancy Ann Hunt and Robert Folsom. And it gives me a chance to continue to make a positive difference in the health and well-being of children in our community. They are our future.” Keeping with the Folsom gala’s tradition, the more than 700 guests each received a candle, adorned with silver stars in honor of Troy. The token of appreciation is a reminder for supporters that through them Methodist Health System remains a place where life shines bright.
2007 Premier Award Honors For a second year, Methodist Dallas Medical Center’s maternal and neonatal care has been honored with the prestigious Premier Award for Quality. Methodist Dallas is one of only three out of 400 hospitals nationwide to receive this recognition. Each year, Premier, the largest health care alliance in the United States, bestows the award on hospitals that improve patient outcomes while safely reducing the cost of care. 2 0 0 7 C ro s s ro a d s A n n u a l R e p o r t

Benefiting Methodist
Theta Pi has given an average of $7,000 a year for the past 14 years to benefit cancer patients. Saluting Theta Pi’s Continuous Giving for Cancer Patients Since 1993, the Theta Pi Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha in Duncanville has held its annual Cancer Awareness Walk/Run in memory of two special women and other cancer victims and to celebrate the victories of survivors. Proceeds from the philanthropic sisterhood’s main fundraising event have been used to support many worthy causes, including gifts to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the focus of the national organization, and gifts totaling nearly $150,000 locally to Methodist Charlton Medical Center to benefit local cancer patients and programs. In addition to funding the construction and furnishing of the Methodist Charlton Cancer Center conference room, providing a place for physicians and families to meet, Theta Pi has given an average $7,000 a year for the last 14 years to pay for mammography exams for low-income women and to support Methodist’s mobile mammography and prostate screening programs. The organization also established a local emergency fund to assist low-income cancer patients who do not have the means to purchase wigs, teeth, prostheses, medications, and other treatment-related expenses. “We began our local focus on cancer in honor of one of our sisters, Carol Jackson, and Duncanville basketball coach Sandra Meadows,” said Kathy Eddy, a past president and still active Theta Pi member. “We are committed to helping the Methodist Charlton Cancer Center continue its service to cancer patients in the Best Southwest region of Duncanville and DeSoto.” If you are interested in supporting cancer care at Methodist Charlton Medical Center, please contact Methodist Health System Foundation at 214-947-4555 or visit www.methodisthealthsystem.org/foundation.
