At last year’s Cornerstone Trust luncheon auction, local boxer Zig-Zag Wallace offered anyone interested the chance to step into the ring with him. The auction item was eventually won by Robert Wilson for $500 — who promptly handed it over to current Te Awamutu Goldfields coach John ‘Horse’ Gibson. Shane Cameron’s boxing gloves ($380) from the auction were also handed over to him as an incentive to get him into the ring. The sparring session caused so much interest that the Cornerstone Trust decided to open it to the public. It was planned for earlier this year, but knee surgery for Mr Gibson and various commitments for both men, meant that the bout was delayed. The sparring session is now to be held on Wednesday, September 24 at Te Awamutu Sports Club. Doors open at 5pm, with the sparring due to start at 5.30pm. A raffle for the chance to win Cornerstone Trust luncheon tickets will be on sale and refreshments will be available. For further details contact Te Awamutu Sports Club (ph 871 3910).

can, experience with kiwi has shown that removing the eggs is likely to prompt the pair to lay more eggs in the same season." In early August Robin’s egg timer transmitter indicated that he was incubating an egg, however when the Maungatautari Trust team arrived to candle the egg (check for development) they found two! The first egg is due to hatch at the end of September with the second due approximately three weeks later. If both eggs hatch they will stay at Kiwi Encounter for about three weeks before they are released into the pest free southern enclosure on Maungatautari.

Two fertile kiwi eggs located in the same nest on Maungatautari have been taken to Kiwi Encounter in Rotorua for artificial hatching. "Last year Robin and his partner Horokio laid an egg which may have been originally fertile, but failed to fully develop and hatch — it was rotten when collected. We don’t want the same disappointment this year so we have removed the two eggs to the expert hatching facility," says Maungatautari Trust fauna ecologist Chris Smuts-Kennedy. Plastic not so fantastic in ocean We are writing to explain and complain about the problem slowly expanding in the ocean. In our Year 9 class at Te Awamutu College, we have been studying plastic this term. Our teacher mentioned to us that there are two very large rubbish dumps floating in the Pacific Ocean, between the US and Japan. These rubbish dumps mainly contain plastic rub-

bish and have been estimated to hold over 100 million tonnes of man-made debris. As there are few ocean currents and the winds aren’t very strong, boats seldom travel through this area, so the rubbish patches were only discovered in 1997. Charles Moore, the sailor who discovered it, sailed through the rubbish filled area for over a week. This shows the sheer size of them, and the bigger they

grow, the more damage they are causing to our environment. It is also estimated that they will double in size within the next decade. We feel that we should be doing all that we can to help stop this problem growing. This is because the poisons from the dump spread and flow into the water, which then kill much of the wildlife that lives underneath the water.

Sea turtles’ major food is jellyfish. Floating plastic nags look exactly like jellyfish, so when the turtles eat the bags they starve to death. Young birds are also affected. We can all make sure that we recycle our plastic and paper rubbish, ensure all rubbish goes into the rubbish stream and start boycotting food that contains excess amounts of plastic. On behalf of the Te Awamutu community may I thank the editor of the Te Awamutu Courier for the awesome job he and his team do in editing and publishing the good things that are happening in our town. The role of the press at times can be seen as a negative influence, but not here in the town of Te Awamutu. So please take the space to compliment yourselves! JOAN MACMANUS

Kind act displays community spirit Kind people abound in this town. When I enquired in a shop if there was still a taxi service here, ‘‘no need’’ said the lady behind the counter. ‘‘My husband and I are just going home for lunch, hop in,’’ she said. It was out of the way for this immigrant couple from South Africa — bless them. MRS C.E. HUTCHINGS

I would like to respond to Matthew Brougham’s misleading letter published in the Te Awamutu Courier on September 2. Despite Mr Brougham’s assertions, nine weeks has not been proven to be a full or effective breast cancer treatment. PHARMAC’s application to have nine weeks registered for use in New Zealand was rejected by MedSafe due to a lack of clinical evidence demonstrating its safety or efficacy. PHARMAC ignored MedSafe and went ahead with nine weeks anyway. 12 months is internationally recognised as the Gold Standard for Her2 positive breast cancer. This was confirmed at a global expert consensus meeting of breast cancer specialists in 2007. That is why 33 countries provide Herceptin for 12 months, and only one, New Zealand, provides it for nine weeks alone. Mr Brougham also raises the red herring of side-effects as a reason not

to fund 12 months, knowing full well this only occurs in a small number of women and is temporary and almost always reversible. He notes that some people say the evidence is stronger for 12 months. I can only assume the some people he refers to are the 1.1 billion fortunate enough to live in the 33 countries that fund Herceptin for 12 months. Or the 33 New Zealand oncologists who made a submission to PHARMAC supporting 12 months and rejecting nine weeks. Or MedSafe, which registered Herceptin for 12 months, but declined nine weeks. Or even the authors of the nine week study themselves, who stated the results were hypothesis generating and that they required further study. Basketball team success at home town tourney follows soccer, ten pin triumphs Te Awamutu College teams have excelled this year in Special Olympics New Zealand events in Waikato region. College teams of athletes, with disabilities or learning delays, were overall winners at the Special Olympics Soccer Tournament held at Matamata and Special Olympics Ten Pin Bowling at Hamilton. The College provided the top scoring bowler in Moshif Hussain, who racked up an impressive 148. Recently Te Awamutu Events Centre was the venue for the annual Special Olympics Secondary Schools Basketball. There were 120 athletes competing and participating in this event from 12 different schools from throughout the Waikato. Students who participated ranged from Intermediate age to senior College students. Special Olympics Basketball consists of a basketball skills session and games competition, meaning there is something for everyone to participate in. Students have to complete six weeks of training before they can compete in a Ribbon Day. Athletes have the opportunity to complete three different basketball ball skills and they are awarded points for their individual effort. The teams event consisted of a round robin competition. Hamilton North School was impressive winning both the skills competition and teams events. Te Awamutu College students showed they were a strong team too, finishing fourth in Division A Skills and winning Division B in the games events. Te Awamutu College won all three games against Cambridge, Hamilton North B and Patricia Avenue. Special Olympics New Zealand was extremely grateful to all of the volunteers from Te Awamutu College, who were outstanding with their support and running the skills sessions. Central Perk Cafe´ provided a fabulous lunch for the volunteers. Special guests were Waipa Mayor Alan Livingston and

Cornerstone provides cash hit for cricketer BY CATHY ASPLIN

TC160908CA02

CORNERSTONE Trustee Christine Braun hands a grant to Peter Bocock (holding bat and Superleague Player of Year trophy).

The latest recipient of a grant from the Cornerstone Trust is Te Awamutu indoor cricketer Peter Bocock. The 17-year-old is a member of the New Zealand Under 19 indoor cricket team which heads to Australia later this month for a three test series. He will also be playing in the Indoor Cricket World Cup next year, which is also in Australia. Peter usually opens the batting and is wicket keeper for the team. He can field at leg side or cover and swings the ball both ways when bowling.

He made the Northern Under 19 indoor cricket team at just 16 and played in the National Tri-Series tournament last year. Peter plays for the Waikato men’s number one indoor cricket team and is captain of the Hamilton Boys’ High School First XI. In the recent Northern Region Superleague premier men’s finals Peter was a member of the winning side from Hamilton and named Superleague Player of the Year. While cricket is now a year round passion for Peter, he has also made his mark in a range of sports includi n g t ennis, rug b y , basketball and squash.

Other issues to consider include the ongoing management of the Domain, the relationship with adjoining landowners whose land is used by some activities, and the compatibility between different Domain activities and future residential development. Feedback from users and the wider community will assist Council in preparing a draft vision statement for the ongoing use, development and management of the Domain. This vision statement will

ESOL tutoring rewarding Coming to live in a new country can be a daunting experience for new migrants even if they are lucky enough to have jobs waiting for them. Feelings of isolation and loneliness may be common, and in addition they are coping with the demands of communicating in English everyday. ESOL Home Tutors (Waikato) provide a service which supports new New Zealanders. The scheme is one of 23 throughout New Zealand. After a 20 hour training a volunteer is matched with a new migrant and then visits them once a week to assist them with the English they need for everyday living. They often develop a friendship as well. ‘‘Supporting a new migrant’s English needs often helps them to build their confidence in living here as well,’’ says service manager Jenny Field. ESOL Home Tutors is running its first training course in Te Awamutu in October for five Tuesdays starting on October 14. Anyone who would like to tutor a new migrant please contact Elaine at Citizens Advice Bureau for more information or phone Mrs Field (07) 853 2188.

Regional Transport Committee pushing projects Minister raises issue of regional fuel tax — possibility not ruled out necessary to secure Government funding for projects such as the Waikato Expressway and Kopu Bridge, as well as advancing the development of rail freight and passenger services in the region. ‘‘Waikato, with 90 road deaths, had the highest regional road toll in the country last year. Getting on with making improvements to our road network is about saving lives and making sure the regional and national economies function smoothly by improving freight and passenger flows.’’ Cr Barker says new legislation has given regions

more powers to set the priorities for the way Government funding is spent on transport infrastructure, particularly state highways. ‘‘Bearing this new power in mind, the Waikato is doing its part to help secure more central Government funding for its priorities, such as the expressway. For example, EW and Hamilton, Waikato and Waipa councils are jointly carrying out the Futureproof subregional growth strategy project. Surveys are being carried out as part of developing a new regional transport model and studies are starting on inter-regional transport and freight.

committee is also pleased to see central Government agencies are looking to work in a more collaborative way with regions on the way ahead. ‘‘Given that the Waikato is a key, nationally important region for such things as the transit of freight and tourism, its essential that we all get on with getting things right. ‘‘Otherwise we risk more unnecessary deaths and sub-optimal economic performance.’’ M rs King said she believed the Waikato may need to consider a regional fuel tax if it wanted to accelerate transport-related

projects faster than what current levels of anticipated Government funding might allow. Cr Barker says there are no firm plans for a regional fuel tax in the Waikato but agrees it is a possible longerterm option to speed up projects agreed to by the Regional Transport Committee. ‘‘It is something we will have to have a conversation with our community about at some point.’’ Cr Barker stressed to the minister that committee members were very unified on making solid progress on improving the Waikato’s transport networks.

T ra nsp o r t Minister Annette King was told on Thursday that the Waikato is doing its bit to get cracking on key regional roading projects. Mrs King met with the Regional Transport Committee, whose members include Environment Waikato councillors, Waipa Mayor Alan Livingston and other regional mayors and representatives from other key organisations. Committee chairman Norm Barker of EW says the minister was given a clear message. ‘‘We told her that the region is, for its part, getting on with the research work

60s-Up movement comes to town A successful public meeting hosted by Cambridge 60s-Up stalwarts Barry and Linda Jackson has achieved its goal of seeing a club formed in Te Awamutu. An executive committee was formed and the club meets again this week to discuss where to from now. Inaugural president is Melva Williamson and she is supported by Ngaire Wilson (vice president), Jeanmary Loomans (secretary), Ray Henshaw (treasurer) and committee members Sheila

Henshaw and Pat Hays. Mrs Williamson says 29 locals turned out to the public meeting — a good result considering Cambridge started with 15 members and now has 180. The Jacksons were keen to spread the word about the good work of 60s-Up in creating social opportunities for people. The movement has no political agenda and activities/outings are geared to be as accessible to all members as possible. The Te Awamutu committee

has put together a list of ideas for club activities which it will present to this week’s meeting to gauge what is popular and what isn’t. The first meeting is at the Burchell Pavilion, Gorst Avenue from 10.30am. Everyone (of any age) is welcome. There is a $2 door charge and a bring plate of finger food for a shared luncheon. Mrs Williamson says meeting formats are not set, and in the future they will include guest speakers or entertainment.

Chuganaut return to play live in Te Awamutu this Saturday night for the first time in four years — and they are psyched. They play at The Alehouse this saturday night with Decyphor and Day3 for The Ale Fest 2. To date Chuganaut’s resume is impressive, winning the New Zealand World Battle of the Bands in 2004, opening the Big Day Out 2005 and were one of the headline acts for 2006’s Metal Day Out. Chuganaut have completed several tours up and down the country and played Australia. In 2007 they released their debut album ‘11:11’. The sequel — ‘11:11 Part 2’ — is due to be released later in the year. In 2008 they’ve had a much needed rest. ‘‘Five years of unrelentless touring can wear you down after a while,’’ says Nail (Te Awamutu’s Tony Vincent). ‘‘But we’re back and we’re fresh

and I can’t wait to get up there and tear it up’’. ‘‘It’s been to long since we were here last,’’ says Nail’ Chuganauts music is heavy alternarock packed with a furious energy which matches their shows — and a furious energetic show is just what they intend to bring to Te Awamutu. WIN CHUGANAUT GOODIES Readers have a chance to win a pass to this Saturday night’s show. The winning entry will receive a pass and the not yet released Chuganaut DVD — home video footage of some of the highlights including back stage scenes, hotel antics some stand out live shows and featuring their famous bus (Sweet Tooth). Runner-up prize is a single pass. To be in to win put your name, address and daytime phone number on the back of en envelope and make sure it reaches our office by 5pm Thursday. The show kicks off at 10pm.

Thousands of Taranaki-King Country residents will miss out on voting at the just announced election on November 8 unless they enrol to vote soon. The Prime Minister has set the election date for Saturday, November 8 and 3890 people eligible to vote in the Taranaki-King Country electorate are still not enrolled. ‘‘Time is running out,’’ says Sandra Wood, Registrar of Electors for the Taranaki-King Country electorate. ‘‘If you’re not enrolled, your vote won’t count. ‘‘Every vote matters and people need to enrol today to make sure they can have their say about who runs the country. ‘‘To make voting as easy as possible, people need to enrol now.’’ People need to be enrolled by Wednesday, October 8 to have their details on the printed electoral rolls used in polling and advance voting places. If they enrol now they will get an EasyVote information pack before election day which includes information on how, when and where to vote. ‘‘The EasyVote pack includes the EasyVote card to take when you vote. This makes voting easier.’’ Anyone not enrolled by Wednesday 8 October will still need to enrol and will have to cast a special declaration vote on election day, which takes about five times longer. Enrolling is easy. Enrolment forms are available by Freetexting your name and address to 3676, or g oing onl ine to www.elections.org.nz, or visiting any PostShop or calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56). People can also check and update their details online at the website. More information about enrolling and voting is available from www.elections.org.nz.

IN BUSINESS CIRCLES

Give your home a fresh look Linen and manchester specialist ‘Bed, Bath and Beyond’ opened its doors in Te Awamutu recently, taking the number of stores in the nationwide chain to 25. Bed, Bath and Beyond began in 1996 as a chain of eight clearance stores trading under the name ‘Linen for Less’. Over the next few years the chain evolved into Bed, Bath and Beyond, dropped the clearance store theme and stocked more quality products, but maintaining the affordable prices. Today Bed, Bath and Beyond stores are thriving throughout the country from Whangarei to Dunedin. Te Awamutu store manager Joanne Williams says as New Zealand’s only nationwide linen and manchester specialist retailers Bed, Bath and Beyond is committed to providing customers with the best value for money. ‘‘And the biggest range in everything for

beds, bathrooms and beyond!’’ As well as linen and manchester, the store stocks a wide range of items including bathroom, bedroom and kitchen accessories, cushions, towel rails, mosquito nets, baby items, scented flowers, candles, oils, throws, rugs, ladder shelving, slippers, micro-fibre cleaning cloths and lots of items suitable for gifts. ‘‘As we have so many lovely gift items we have a gift registry for weddings, christenings, anniversaries etc. ‘‘We also have friendly staff who are happy to help with good advice and great product expertise. ‘‘We look forward to providing all our Te Awamutu customers with a fresh, new look for their homes and some fantastic customer service.’’ Bed, Bath and Beyond is in the Alexandra Street premises previously occupied by Arbuckles and is open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 9am-1pm. For further details contact the store (ph 870 3985).

Trust Waikato reaches funding milestone Trust Waikato has donated a staggering $100 million to thousands of not-for-profit community groups since its inception 20 years ago. ‘‘We’re delighted to be able to announce such a significant milestone,’’ says chief executive Bev Gatenby. ‘‘However, this is not just about Trust Waikato; its actually about the thousands of Waikato people who are involved in our community and voluntary sector. They are the people we want to acknowledge. They work behind the scenes to strengthen the fibres of their communities and ultimately, they are the ones who bring our donations to life.’’ Chair of Trust Waikato, John Kilbride has been on the board since 2002. He puts the success of the Trust down to its sound investments and community focused approach. ‘‘Our Trustees know their communities well; they’ve been part of the not-for-profit sector for years and are aware of the challenges community groups face. We operate with a genuine belief that this money is a community asset that we must use wisely for today’s communities and ensure it still has value for our great grandchildren’s communities.’’ Trust Waikato is one of 12 nationwide community trusts established in 1988 to hold 100 percent of the shares in the new Trust Banks. In 1996 Trust Waikato, along with 10 other community trusts sold their banking shares. The $156 million it gained from doing so was invested and today, Trust Waikato has a capital value of around $240 million. The profits from investments form the donation pool each year. The Trust is governed by 14 Trustees who are appointed by the Minister of Finance.

IHC calf scheme expanded to include all livestock After raising more than $21 million since 1984 for people with an intellectual disability, the PGG Wrightson IHC Calf Scheme has been expanded to include all livestock. The scheme extension will be known as the PGG Wrightson IHC Rural Scheme. PGG Wrightson, New Zealand’s largest and only nationwide provider to the agricultural sector, has sponsored the Calf Scheme since its inception. To date over 80,000 calves have been donated with proceeds going to support 45,000 people living with intellectual disability and their families, said Hazel Barrer, the company’s sponsorship manager. ‘‘The Calf Scheme has proved such a success around the country that we have expanded it to enable any livestock farmer in New Zealand to be involved,’’ she says. ‘‘Under the new Rural Scheme anyone can pledge animals to be sold at auction through PGG Wrightson’s livestock trading network, with proceeds supporting IHC programmes in communities across New Zealand. ‘‘We are proud to be involved in a sponsorship helping rural communities in which our clients live and work. Money raised within a community stays in that community to help local people living with disabilities.’’ Rugby legend and retired farmer Colin Meads, patron of the Calf Scheme for 25 years, says the Rural Scheme initiative will give more people the chance to participate and help raise funds by donating stock. ‘‘The big advantage is they can see money being put to good use in their local areas, such as volunteering, self advocacy support, after-school programmes, family respite care and holiday camps,’’ he says. More information about contributing to the PGG Wrightson IHC Rural Scheme is available on Freephone 0800 746 444, at www.ihc.org.nz or www.pggwrightson.co.nz.

Every parent’s dream of confident, enthusiastic, articulate children can be a reality, believes Helen O’Grady Children’s Drama Academy Waikato Principal, Andrea Goodman. “Children today, more than ever, need to be confident communicators. “They need to be able to express their thoughts, ideas and feelings effectively.” The internationally ac-

claimed Helen O’Grady Drama programme takes an imaginative and sensitive approach to this personal development, through a unique drama curriculum which focuses on having fun while learning skills. Children attend classes for one hour a week. An enthusiastic, qualified teacher and a friendly, fun learning environment motivate the children to partici-

pate and achieve their best at all levels of development. A short end of year production allows children to demonstrate to parents the skills they have developed during the year. Parents wishing to know more about the Helen O’Grady Children’s Drama Academy should phone the Waikato Principal, on (07) 827 0526 or e-mail [email protected]

The two week programme runs from Monday to Friday each week (September 29 - October 10) and includes a raft of entertainment and exercise. During the first week activities include

A programme designed for gifted preschoolers, which has already met with success in Auckland, is set to be rolled out to other locations by The Gifted Education Centre, after it recently received a funding boost from the Sovereign Sunshine programme. The Gifted Education Centre Director, Kathy Williams, says the charity had established its Small Poppies programme over a year ago to meet the needs of gifted preschoolers. “We were getting a lot of inquiries from parents wanting to find out if there was anything available for children under the age of five. “We’d been offering support and education for school-aged gifted children, their parents and teachers, but had nothing in place for pre-schoolers.” The Small Poppies programme was established and is currently run by Sue Breen who has over 30 years teaching experience. The pre-schoolers are taught by New Zealand registered teachers who have also been trained in dealing with gifted children. The programme runs in 10 week sessions and involves attending a weekly half day session at The Gifted Education Centre. Ms Williams says teachers at the Centre use an investigative play teaching method for Small Poppies. “This involves pre-schoolers taking a hands on approach to things by using experimental learning. For example, this could involve getting the children to play with bubbles and teaching them why they pop and why they are come in different sizes and colours.” Ms Williams says the programme has met with huge success in the Auckland region. The funding from Sovereign Sunshine will now enable us to offer the programme to over 50 other families across New Zealand. “As the programme gains in momentum, I expect more gifted children and their parents will be able to access support of the Centre.” The Centre also helps parents and teachers to understand the behaviour and learning needs of gifted children. “We provide open forum parent evenings, workshops and professional development courses for teachers.”

A PROGRAMME TO HELP YOUR CHILD PREPARE FOR SCHOOL.

Parents love the results! Auckland mother Leanne Mete has had five of her children attend Small Poppies. Her four-year-old daughter is currently attending the programme. “I heard about Small Poppies through the kindy that my eldest son was attending. He was always different - he would get fixated about things like tow bars, memorise street names and number plates. When he was about two and a half years old I bought a sing and learn timetable book and he sat there listening and singing day after day until he’d learnt them all. “His kindergarten teachers recognised that he learnt differently and told me to try Small Poppies. Since then all of my kids have attended the programme. “Each child is different and their interest in the themes explored at Small Poppies changes each week. My daughter always looks forward to attending classes and learning in a relaxed environment with other gifted children. “I would recommend Small Poppies to other parents there is support for parents with gifted children and you also get to meet others who are going through similar things at home with their children.” There are currently 480 students through-

out the country registered with the Centre. Depending on their age, they attend a range of 10 week junior, middle or senior One Day School programmes. The Sovereign Sunshine scheme which is backed by Kiwi actress and mother, Greer Robson, helps under-resourced childrens charities by providing them with funding. Each month the initiative focuses on a different charity group, with members of the public deciding via online voting which charity gets the funding. Sovereign staff also play their part by helping to raise funds for the different charities. Sovereign Head of Marketing and Product Management, Vena Crawley, says all 800 staff have been involved in supporting the latest round of fundraising. “Each business unit participated in a mini Olympics with departments picking a different country and decorating their office spaces accordingly. Staff also competed in running and cycling events at the local gym and raised $3,000 of the total $15,000 that was donated to the Centre.” To find out more about the programme or to vote for a charity go to www.sovereignsunshine.co.nz.

help to allow you to get some rest.” Jamieson warns: “Some babies cry and grizzle and then fall asleep. It’s ok to leave the child for a few minutes if this is the case. But if there is prolonged crying, parents need to know that it’s ok to go back. The baby could be crying for good reason – she could be in pain.” Parents need to know the signs of tiredness in a baby – which include grizzling, rubbing eyes etc. Some ideas Jamieson has that could work for you would include massaging the baby before sleep, singing or talking to the baby, having a bath or, if little else is working, taking baby for a ride in the car. Most important is creating a calm period before putting the baby into bed. “But no single approach will work all the time, so set predictable and consistent nap routines. “It’s also extremely important to remember when putting your child to bed, to place her on her back. This reduces the chances of cot death.”

All parents know that one of the most difficult things about having a small baby is getting enough sleep. The baby has her own interior clock, and parents’ need for sleep has nothing to do with it. However, getting the baby into good sleeping patterns is good for all. Clinical adviser for Plunket, Allison Jamieson explains: “A little baby sleeps a lot – as she gets older she has more time awake. “My advice is to talk to a Plunket nurse, or another authority about your circumstances. The danger of having hard and fast rules is parents feeling they’re failing if the rules don’t work for them.” Jamieson stresses that babies use crying as their only way to communicate. “If she cries, it could mean that she’s in pain, has wind, is hot or cold or is hungry. Look at the whole picture before deciding what to do about a sleeping problem. “Some just cry because they want to be comforted. Picking her up and cuddling her may do the trick. Waikato will be hoping the return of two of their exciting young charges will spark them to victory against North at the Trust Waikato Te Awamutu Events Centre, 1pm, on Sunday. Jodi Beaumont and Alanah Cassidy were unavailable for the round two game against the New Plymouth-based Western side at Taupo on Saturday, won 43-39 by Western. The Western side was made up of mostly match-hardened Central Pulse players. Cassidy and Beaumont were away with the New Zealand under-21 side preparing for tomorrow night’s curtainraiser for the test between New Zealand and Australia. Beaumont is well-known locally, both for her netball and BMX exploits. She is a former Te Awamutu age group netball representative, ex member of Te Awamutu BMX Club and national BMX champion. It was Waikato’s second straight loss, following a 60-53 first-up loss to Otago in Dunedin. Waikato face a formidable North side captained by ex Silver Ferns Vilimaina Davu (captain) and world class midcourter Temepara George. They also have the highly under-rated Samoan international shooter Catherine Latu and 2008 Magic fringe player Brigette Tapene in their line-up. It is a must win game for the Mooloo girls, who languish at the wrong end of the points table with just one bonus point (for finish-

Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic captain Amegine Metcalfe, who filled in as a replacement against Western, says Waikato are definitely a talent — ‘‘They just need to put in a 60 minute performance.’’ To make the top four, Waikato must win at least one of their last

three games, picking up bonus points in the process, as there are just six teams in the top flight of the national championships. Waikato boast Magic players Nic Pettit (captain), Halana Leith, Keshia Grant and Rachel Beale, along with Hayley Stockman (Tactix 2008) and Candyce Edwards (Pulse 2008).

WAIKATO Under-18 second-five, Aaron Wilson (who plays for Otorohanga in premier grade) makes a break against Auckland at Albert Park, with support from (left to right) Josaan Levien, Adrian Hall and Greg Relph. Auckland won 21-3 after leading 7-0 at halftime.

Roigard springs into form at Stewart Alexander Twenty-four handicapper Bev Roigard won the overall net in the ladies’ spring open at Stewart Alexander Golf Club. Roigard, making the most of the home course advantage, shot an excellent round of 65 to also win division two. Over 70 ladies patronised the open tournament. They were greeted with great course conditions, which certainly showed in the scoring for the day. Visitors came from Rotorua, Putaruru, Hamilton, Kawhia,

PioPio Aria, Waitomo, Te Awamutu and Pirongia. Division I winner was ladies’ president Carol Formosa with an impressive 66 net off her 20 handicap. Kawhia visitor Mary Smith annexed the stableford with 39 points, by lot from club champion Helen Baynes. Both these players play off 14 handicap. Division II stableford winner was local member Helen Parker, with a well compiled 37 points off her 27 handicap, from Maggie

Bouma, with another consistent round of 35 points off her 27. Division III winner was local Gwen Quarrie with an impressive 67 net off her 29 handicap. Sharon Haycock topped the stableford with 38 points off her 33 handicap, while Heather Edgar of Putaruru (28 hcp) edged out Beth Walker (30hcp) and Hetti Berg (31hcp) by lot with 34 points. Division IV was won by Kawhia’s Marilyn Porima with 33 points, from host members Barbara Weld 30 and Angie Way 24.

JOSH CHARLESTON (left) sends Alex Robertson flying at training with a tomoenage stomach throw. Josh Charleston warmed up for next month’s nationals with a bronze medal winning performance at the North Island Judo Championships in Wanganui. The 13-year-old member of Te Awamutu Judo Academy lost his first fight, then strung together five impressive wins to finish third in the senior boys’ under 45kg division. Charleston has enjoyed a successful year, having won gold at the East Coast area tournament, silver at Howick and silver at Western Bays. His academy club-mate Mark Sinnett (11) struck tough opposition in the senior boys’ under 40kg division. He won his last fight after

losing two. The tournament attracted 388 entries who were involved in over 400 fights. Over 30 judo clubs from throughout the country were represented, along with a 20 strong team from New Caledonia. Te Awamutu Academy coach, Hamish Rees is understandably very proud of his two students — ‘‘They had some very experienced fighters to contend with. I think this pair will be ones to watch out for in the future. ‘‘They have excellent technique and, with time and experience, I think they have the potential to one day represent New Zealand.’’

Te Awamutu netballer shines both ends of court By COLIN THORSEN Vanessa Chatfield, 1.77m and possibly still going up, was just a 14-year-old when Gaylene Dorssers snapped her up for her champion Te Awamutu College Senior A team in 2004. Now 18, she is in her third season with the crack Sacred Heart netball team that will fly the Waikato flag at the national secondary school championships in Auckland from October 7-10. Sacred Heart qualified for the finals tournament by finishing in the top four of the Upper North Island tournament at Papakura. Their only loss in 10 games was to Mt Albert Grammar in the final — a team they had already beaten in pool play. Chatfield was a standout player throughout the week, deservedly being named in the Upper North Island tournament team. Cambridge’s Jodi Beaumont (formerly of Te Awamutu) also made the Top Players group. Being tall and talented, Chatfield has always been headhunted for netball teams and thrust under its goal. What makes her such a special player is her versatility, being able to play efficiently at either end of the court — something that has caught the eye of the Waikato selectors. She plays defence for COGS I, winners of this year’s Te Awamutu premier championship, then switches back to goal-attack to shoot goals for Sacred Heart. ‘‘Vanessa showed tons of potential when making the TA College Senior A team as a Year 10 student,’’ says Dorssers. ‘‘She’s always shown a

19 (A) Red team that placed fourth at this year’s national championships in Hamilton. She was a member of last year’s Hamilton City Under-17 representative team — runners-up at the 2007 nationals.

Chatfield has always looked up to her older sister Kylee (6cm taller), who also plays for the champion COGS I team, and was a training partner (nontravelling reserve) for the Waikato under-21 side at the nationals this year.
