Only Lewis and offensive guard Jarrod Holt are gone from last year’s starting lineup. The Blue Devils have 14 different offensive players with starting experience on this year’s team. Duke has four returning starters on the offensive line while all three starting wide receivers also are back for another season. NO QB STARTING EXPERIENCE • The 2010 season is just the fourth season in the last 15 years that Duke has not had a returning quarterback with at least one career start. The other three years were 1996, 2002 and 2006. In 1996, David Green earned his first start against Florida State and completed 6-of-12 passes for 40 yards in a 44-7 loss. The 2002 season started with Adam Smith at QB as he completed 5-of-11 passes for 52 yards in a 23-16 win over East Carolina. Marcus Jones started the 2006 season and threw for only 11 yards on 2-of-6 passes before giving way to true freshman Thaddeus Lewis in a 13-0 loss to Richmond. In all three seasons at least two QBs played in the season opener. DUKE QB STARTING DEBUTS • There have been 49 Duke quarterbacks since 1950 to start at least one career game. The 2010 season opener will add a 50th name to that list. Here is a look at some of the top starting debuts in school history: Player vs. Opponent, Year Dave Brown vs. Wake Forest, 1989 Billy Ray vs. S. RENFREE HAS GAME EXPERIENCE • Redshirt sophomore Sean Renfree is the only player on Duke’s roster to have played quarterback in a collegiate game. Renfree appeared in five games as a redshirt freshman last season before suffering a knee injury against Georgia Tech. He completed 34-of-50 (.680) for 330 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. He led Duke to a comeback victory over Army in the second week of the season, throwing for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 7-of-8 passing. FRESHMEN LEAD TEAM IN RUSHING • In each of the last two seasons, a true freshman has led the Blue Devils in rushing yards. Last year, Durham native Desmond Scott tallied a team-high 262 yards on 70 carries with one touchdown. Two years ago, Jay Hollingsworth recorded a season-best 399 yards on 108 attempts with one touchdown. A freshman has led the Blue Devils in rushing only seven times in school history. KURUNWUNE TOPS IN YARDS PER CARRY • Redshirt sophomore Patrick Kurunwune was the top running back when it came to yards per carry a year ago. Duke coaches want to average at least 4.0 yards per carry and Kurunwune was the only running back with over 10 carries to do so, rushing for 149 yards on 34 carries for a 4.4 average per rush. Kurunwune had Duke’s longest run from scrimmage in 2009 with a 26-yard gain against N.C. Central. FRESHMEN RBS IMPRESS IN PRESEASON • True freshmen running backs Josh Snead and Juwan Thompson competed well during the preseason and will push for playing time. Snead, Smithfield, N.C., native, enrolled at Duke in January and showed his speed during the spring game with a team-high 99 yards on just nine attempts. A Fairburn, Ga., native, Thompson came in as one of the strongest players in the group this summer and showed his lower body strength when he squatted 500 pounds. The Blue Devils are looking for more big plays from the running back position as the group only had two runs of 20 or more yards last season and both came in the same game against N.C. Central.

KELLY A VETERAN WR • Kelly is the only senior among the wide receiving corps and brings the most experience with 35 career games played and 19 career starts. • Last season, Kelly had his most productive campaign with 54 catches, 625 yards and four touchdowns. He was a go-to receiver in critical situations, leading the team with 13 catches on third down that resulted in first downs. • He now has 82 career receptions for 953 yards and five touchdowns. VERNON LOOKS TO BUILD ON FRESHMAN YEAR • Vernon recorded one of the best seasons by a freshman wide receiver in school history in 2009. • The Miami native set school freshman records for receptions (55), receiving yards (746) and 100-yard receiving games (3). • Vernon ranked tied for fourth in the ACC in receptions per game, sixth in receiving yards per contest and eighth in all-purpose yards per game. DEPTH AT WIDE RECEIVER • Duke enters the 2010 season with quality depth at the wide receiver position. • Besides the three returning starters, the Blue Devils get Tyree Watkins back after he missed the final eight games of 2009 with a knee injury. He had seven catches for 48 yards in his first four college outings. • Redshirt junior Josh Trezvant and redshirt sophomore Tony Foster also are expected to receive playing time at the position.

Game 1 - Duke vs. Elon - Sept. 4, 2010 THREE SENIORS AT TE • Duke has three seniors at the tight end position to make the group one of the deepest and most experienced on the team. • Mackey Award candidate Brett Huffman has started 14 consecutive games at the position and has played in 36 career contests with 18 starts. In his career, he has 33 catches for 341 yards and four touchdowns. • Brandon King is in his second season as a tight end after playing fullback for two years. He has played in 34 career games with four starts and tallied 26 catches for 292 yards and five touchdowns. • Danny Parker adds depth with 32 career games played, mostly on special teams. He has nine receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns in his career. OFFENSIVE LINE EXPERIENCE • The Blue Devils have six offensive lineman with playing experience returning in 2010. Four starters from the 2009 season return up front while several redshirt freshmen could see playing time. • The two longest consecutive starts streaks on the team are both by offensive linemen as both Kyle Hill and Bryan Morgan have started 24 straight games over the past two seasons. Redshirt sophomore Brian Moore also started all 12 games a year ago in his first season on the field. • Duke has a veteran unit on the left side with Hill, a redshirt junior, and redshirt senior Brandon Harper next to Morgan, the team’s senior center. • Redshirt freshman Perry Simmons is listed first on the depth chart at right tackle and is expected to earn a start in the season-opener. • Other players listed on the depth chart heading into the season opener are redshirt junior Jon Needham, redshirt sophomore Conor Irwin and redshirt freshmen John Coleman, Joey Finison and Dave Harding.

Duke Football Game Notes KROMAH ANCHORS LINEBACKING CORPS • Redshirt senior Abraham Kromah has moved to the middle linebacker slot this season after playing on the outside last year. He is looking to build on his junior campaign when he notched his first four career starts. • Last season, Kromah played in seven games, missing five contests due to a leg injury. Despite the injury, he tallied 40 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups and one caused fumble.

RWABUKAMBA DRAFTED BY CFL • Senior cornerback Chris Rwabukamba has emerged as a leader in the secondary this season after he was drafted in the fourth round (27th overall pick) by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 2010 Canadian Football League Draft. • Last season Rwabukamba was second on the team with seven pass breakups and is the team’s active leader with 12 in his career. He also has one career interception and 72 career tackles.

YOUTH AT LINEBACKER • The Blue Devils have several players in their second season on campus who are in the mix for playing time at the linebacker position. • Redshirt freshman August Campbell is penciled in as a starter at the weakside linebacker spot. He played in three games with two tackles in 2009 before missing the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury and receiving a hardship waiver. • Sophomores Austin Gamble and Tyree Glover are both listed second on the depth chart. Gamble is behind Kromah at middle linebacker and had 11 tackles a year ago while Glover sits behind Adam Banks at the Devil position and had eight tackles in 2009. • Also on the depth chart is redshirt junior Eriks Reks and redshirt freshman Kevin Rojas. Reks has played in 17 career games while Rojas is behind Campbell at weakside linebacker.

COCKRELL EMERGES DURING PRESEASON • Redshirt freshman cornerback Ross Cockrell was a playmaker during the preseason and emerged as the starting cornerback opposite Rwabukamba. Cockrell showed his ability to break on the ball with several interceptions and pass breakups during camp.

GAMBLE A TRACK & FIELD STAR • Gamble spent his offseason competing on the Duke track & field team. He became the first athlete in Duke track & field history to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the discus where he finished 20th (164-3). • He set the school record in the discus (180-10) at the NCAA Eastern Preliminary Round and also placed third at the ACC Championships to earn All-ACC honors (179-5). • In his freshman year, he also won the discus championship (175-8) at the Penn Relays, becoming the first Duke athlete to do so since James O’Leary in 1950. DOUBLE DIGIT TACKLES • Duke has three players on its defense who have recorded 10 or more tackles in a game during their careers. All three came last season as Lee Butler had 10 tackles at Kansas, Matt Daniels notched 13 tackles with 10 solo stops at Miami and Thornton had 10 tackles against Virginia Tech. WILLIAMS SWITCHES TO CORNERBACK • Junior Johnny Williams transitioned from wide receiver to cornerback last spring and is expected to receive playing time at the position this season. Williams missed part of the preseason with an injury but coaches know his athleticism from the past two seasons when he caught 61 passes for 712 yards and one touchdown. DANIELS TOP RETURNING TACKLER • Junior safety Matt Daniels is Duke’s top returning tackler from last season. In 2009, Daniels finished third on the team with 83 tackles, including a team-high 56 solo stops. He ranked 13th in the ACC with 6.9 tackles per game. • Daniels is the team’s active career leader in tackles (105), interceptions (1) and caused fumbles (3). A year ago, Daniels ranked fifth in the conference and tied for 34th nationally in caused fumbles per game (0.25). BUTLER VERSATILE • Junior Lee Butler moved from cornerback to safety in the spring but will play cornerback in some defensive packages. • Butler has started in eight of the 22 games he has played in during his first two seasons. Seven of those starts came last season when he posted 39 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and four pass breakups. • In the post-spring testing, Butler recorded the program’s top vertical jump (40.5 inches) and ranked second in the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.38 seconds. SOPHOMORE BACKUPS AT SAFETY • Two sophomores are listed second on the depth chart at safety for the Blue Devils. • Redshirt sophomore Jordon Byas is behind Butler. Byas had 20 total tackles last season and was among the team’s top special teams performers. He was second on the team with 12 special teams tackles and had a blocked punt against North Carolina. • As a true freshman last season, Walt Canty also played primarily on special teams with three tackles. Canty and Daniels both have reputations as hardhitting players in the secondary. YOUNG-WISEMAN BACK FROM INJURY • Redshirt freshman safety Anthony Young-Wiseman missed the entire 2009 season after suffering a knee injury during summer workouts. Young-Wiseman practiced the entire preseason and is battling for playing time.

Special S i l Teams T Notes N t SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED • Redshirt junior kicker Will Snyderwine, a nonscholarship roster member for the past two seasons, was awarded a scholarship for the 2010 season. • In 2000, Snyderwine earned second team All-ACC honors after setting a school single-season record with 17 made field goals and a perfect 24-of-24 PAT attempts. CAREER FIELD GOAL RECORDS • After kicking for just one season, Snyderwine moved into the top 10 for career made field goals at Duke. As a sophomore last season he made 17 field goals to move him into 10th in school history, two shy of Matt Brooks’ total of 19 for ninth most. • Senior Nick Maggio is two made field goals shy of the top 10 with 15 career made field goals. • The two players are also nearing eligibility for highest career field goal percentage by players with at least 25 attempts. Snyderwine needs five more attempts to be eligible but he holds the single season record with an .850 percentage (17-of-20) last season. Maggio is two attempts shy and would rank fifth on the career list with a .652 percentage (15-of-23). Duke • Career Made Field Goals 1. Morgan was also named a nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team which focuses on what student-athletes do in the community, classroom and on the field. • Junior wide receiver Donovan Varner joined a list of 51 players selected to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List. The Biletnikoff Award is handed out to the nation’s top wide receiver. Varner was also the lone Blue Devil selected to the preseason All-ACC team by the media. • Redshirt junior kicker Will Snyderwine was among 30 players named to the Lou Groza Award Watch List for the top kicker in the country. Snyderwine was a semifinalist for the award a year ago. WILKINSON NAMED ACC LEGEND • Former Duke All-America Jay Wilkinson will represent his alma mater as a member of the 2010 ACC Football Legends class to be honored at the league’s championship game in Charlotte on December 4. • A native of Norman, Okla., Wilkinson lettered three seasons (1961-62-63) for the Blue Devils, helping Duke to an overall record of 20-9-1 and ACC championships in both 1961 and 1962. As a senior, he earned first team All-America and ACC Player of the Year honors after leading the conference with 72 points on a school single-season record 12 touchdowns. In addition, he finished ninth in the balloting for the Heisman Trophy. • For his career, Wilkinson amassed 2,753 all-purpose yards with 17 touchdowns and continues to hold school records for punt return yards in a game (160 vs. N.C. State, 1961), punt returns for touchdowns in a season (2 in 1961) and punt returns for touchdowns in a career (3). On Duke’s career lists, he continues to rank second in punt returns (65), second in punt return yardage (761) and second in punt return average (11.71). • After receiving first team All-ACC accolades in 1963, Wilkinson went on to represent Duke in both the East-West Shrine Game and Hula Bowl, and was a ninth round selection of the Chicago Bears in the 1964 NFL Draft. 50TH ANNIVERSARY FOR COTTON BOWL CHAMPS • This year marks the 50th anniversary of Duke’s 1960 squad that went 8-3, captured the ACC championship and defeated Arkansas, 7-6, in the Cotton Bowl. • Under the direction of head coach Bill Murray, the Blue Devils finished the year ranked 10th nationally in the final Associated Press poll. • Butch Allie and Art Browning served as team captains. • Browning, Dwight Bumgarner, Mark Leggett and Tee Moorman earned All-ACC honors. • Moorman was a first team All-America choice after catching 54 passes for 476 yards and three TDs. • Leggett paced the team in rushing with 444 yards while quarterback Don Altman completed 80-of-119 (.672) passes for 635 yards and three TDs. • The 1960 Duke team will be honored during Duke’s home game against Miami on October 16.

State (91-64; .587), Georgia Tech (87-64; .576), Florida State (86-66; .566), Virginia (82-73; .529), Maryland (79-72; .523), Wake Forest (77-76; .503), Clemson (72-79; .477) and Boston College (68-80; .460). • The Blue Devils are joined by Miami as the only two ACC schools that will face ledgers including four opponents that reached double figures in the win column in 2009. EIGHT 2010 FOES REACHED POSTSEASON • Seven of Duke’s foes participated in bowl games last year with three winners (Alabama, 37-21 over Texas in the BCS National Championship game; Virginia Tech, 37-14 over Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Bowl; and Navy, 35-13 over Missouri in the Texas Bowl) while Elon earned a berth in the 2009 FCS playoffs. • Other 2010 opponents to play in bowl games last year include Boston College (lost 24-13 to Southern California in the Emerald Bowl), Georgia Tech (lost 24-14 to Iowa in the Orange Bowl), Miami (lost 20-14 to Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl) and North Carolina (lost 19-17 to Pittsburgh in the Meineke Car Care Bowl). As a senior in 1989, he earned ACC Player of the Year honors while helping Duke win a share of the conference championship with a 6-1 league record. Hines received first team All-America accolades in both 1988 and 1989. • A native of Chapel Hill, N.C., Hines holds school career records for pass receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and 100-yard receiving games (17) while holding school single-season standards for receiving yards (1,149 in 1989), receiving touchdowns (17 in 1989), 100-yard receiving games (6 in both 1987 & 1988) and total points (104 in 1989). • On the ACC’s career lists, Hines continues to rank first in touchdown receptions, first in 100-yard receiving games, third in receiving yards and ninth in pass receptions. A three-time first team All-ACC selection, he is the only player in league history to pace the conference in receiving yardage three consecutive seasons and continues to hold the conference singleseason record for touchdown catches. • Hines becomes the 10th former Duke player to earn induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.
