Pat Murphy’s gig report September

Hi Jazz Lovers! Toowoomba has burst into activity since the beginning of Spring, the weather is warming up and the jazz lovers have come out to play. I’m very pleased to report that the combination of warmer weather and promotional activity we all have been engaged in has meant that the jazz club is attracting a small profit at the door to sustain our operations. I am keen to see how we can offer more to our members and musicians.

September 2012 has been an excellent month for the Jazz Society with two wonderful nights at North Toowoomba Bowls Club. Success could be measured by the quality of the music, 9 Nov. the attendance or the profit margin and I’m “Windy City” pleased to report that all three were achieved. The Alison Bryant Sextet was the featured TJS Committee group on Friday 14th. TOOWOOMBA JAZZ SOCIETY NEWSLETTER Evening Admission Members $10 Visitors $15 Children under 15 free ing musicians Margie and Tony Fullerton on Friday 28th. Together with drummer Peter Rodgers and reed player Pat Harrington, some fantastic music emerged. Margie’s keyboard ability was most impressive and it’s no wonder that she has played with Australian jazz icons Don Burrows and George Golla. One of her most impressive performances was Russell St Rag a tune written by Adelaide composer Dave Dallwitz (25.10.14 to 23.3.03) who specialised in Ragtime and Dixieland. She also performed a number of vocals as did her husband Tony and drummer Peter Rodgers.

Pat Harrington is always outstanding. His tenor rendition of Moonglow and a solo in a tune called He’s a Tramp were just wonderful. This tune was presented during the jam session by Peter’s vocalist daughter Julie. Currently, Julie is being tutored by Signey Arnison who will hopefully appear at the Jazz Club in December. The Clem Four will be the featured group this Friday. Their credentials are very impressive and trumpeter Ashley Moor is a Toowoomba boy. Later in the month we will also have the opportunity to hear current conservatorium student and former Toowoomba girl Amy Backhouse. Saxophonist in this group will be another former Toowoomba girl Katrina Fawns who has worked as a professional musician for a number of years.—Pat

Joyce’s Birthday Joyce Marlatt has been a member of the TJS for many years, she hasn’t been able to attend any functions at the club for medical reasons. For a few years now a group of TJS musos have taken the music to her, a couple of times a year, at the nursing home where she resides. Joyce’s 90th birthday was at end of July. So on Saturday August 4th Brian Close, Frank Early, Bill White, Ian Craig and Michael Stemmler played for an hour for Joyce, family, friends and a number of other residents of the Mt Lofty Heights Nursing Home. A good time was had by all and plans are afoot to meet again before Christmas. - Dee

Hi! from the Editor After a shaky first edition and with much support from committee members and others, here goes for its next edition. Jazzy snips: From our loyal Bar Keepers to Historians!! I’m happy to report that Ed

and Helen have agreed to delve into some our Club’s (hi)stories. They are originals in the true sense. A welcome home is in order to Frank Appleton, the mad adventurer who has another very worthwhile tale to tell about his amazing ‘Walk on the Camino’. More over a ‘red’! It’s great to see Marlene back with us after a nasty bout of winter ills. Looks very sprightly back on the dance floor! Ron and I were introduced to a band from Melbourne called Shirazz at the Newcastle Jazz festival. We enjoyed them so much we had to hit the BJC to hear again. Google them for more info if you enjoy trad jazz performed by a polished group of lively youngsters. Future Newsletters - Constructive comments and feedback are encouraged, and greatly appreciated! Deadline for submissions: Wed 7/11/12 That’s it from me! - Trish

New Year’s Eve A sub-committee has been formed with 3 people from each club, and will shortly release details for a smooth running function. We can say that a limited number tickets/seats will be available for each Club’s dispersal and will available through the individual clubs. We anticipate that two local bands will be performing - the format will closely follow our past events at the clubhouse. Start/finish 8.00 to 1.00am.
