little British car which started life 75 years ago as a modest family car is now an example of what can be achieved with skill, knowledge — and money. Mike Donnelly has owned the 1938 Morris 8 for 42 years — but it has only been on the road for about six of those. He bought the car locally from Don Hope and it was already pretty hot for its day. The little Morris had been used as a racer by Merv Ingram and Ian Johnson for hill climbs, club days etc and was sporting a supercharged Morrie thou engine with a Morrie four speed with straight cut gears. Mr Donnelly says the little car was quick. It would pull 40mph in first, 70 in second... He drove it around for five years, then farming, family and other responsibilities saw the little Morrie get parked in the shed — for 36 years. A couple of years ago Mr Donnelly and his wife Kathy decided the Morris should be given a new lease on life. The car was taken to Mr Donnelly’s cousin

tor, and sonin-law Dave Brennan, who work at Ohaupo Motors, also contributed to the project. Mr Donnelly says the little Morris is a great drive, with plenty of power and good road manners. He says working in such a small space meant a lot of one-off parts had to be made or adapted — and at the same time he wanted everything tidy and looking professional.

running through a BW35 automatic. The electrics on the V8 were traded for the simplicity of a four barrell carburettor. The engine was prepared by Otorohanga’s Motor Preparations. Cooling is provided by a custom radiator made by Te Awamutu radiators. The all leather interior was also built in the Bay of Plenty, utilising Landrover Defender front seats and the original rear seat. His son Jason, a stainless steel fabrica-

Mr Donnelly says it is a credit to those who worked on the project that this has been achieved. It has only been on the road since before Christmas — but gets around. One of the first major outings was Beach Hop 2013 (pictured) and the couple regularly take in Classic Car and Hot Rod events.

Mitsubishi Triton offer hard to beat BY DEAN TAYLOR

T

he worst thing about Mitsubishi’s 2013 Triton is that supply is struggling to keep up with demand. From the base 2WD GL model up, the Triton has been given more power and more features, while maintaining its award winning credibility. I drove that very base 2WD GL model from InghamDriven, and the first surprise it the cost — starting at under $30,000. The company believes it is the best valued 2WD ute in New Zealand, and it would be hard to argue otherwise. The Triton already had a good load capacity, with one of the longest and deepest trays in the class. It already had proven maneuverability and the best warranty on offer. Now it has more power, more torque and a higher tow rating, as well as some nice features normally only found

up the model range. Mitsubishi has combined the knowledge from both motorsport and its commercial truck business to further refine its 2.5 litre, four cylinder, common rail turbodiesel to produce 133kW of power and 407Nm of torque. That is up from the previous 103kW and 319Nm — about one third better while still maintaining and impressive economy rating of 8l/100km. Tow capacity has been lifted 20 percent to three tonnes. The new base model has been given better GLS type seats, some external upgrades and rides on bigger 16’’ wheels with meaty 245/70 tyres. The power is delivered to the rear wheels via a five speed manual transmission. The interior is generally basic, but comfortable and roomy — even the rear. The seats are good, controls handy and it is relatively quiet. A surprise is cruise control, but I’m a fan of this development and guess if the

Triton was going to be used for long hauls it would be useful. Stereo system is pretty basic, but works fine, and incorporates Bluetooth connectivity. The power is surprising — just make sure you are on boost if you need it. Admittedly I test the vehicles unladen, but acceleration is more than acceptable and cruising is effortless. It is fair to say Mitsubishi have aimed the Triton at tradies and the rural sector, with good sales to the likes of councils, veterinarians and subbies — but they also appeal to buyers who want a new ‘car’ with the versatility of a ute. Mitsubishi’s Diamond Advantage Warranty — advertised as a 10 year relationship — helps. InghamDriven say the warranty offers peace of mind and known costs — an attractive option for private, commercial and fleet buyers. There are also lease plans — all available through

Finance Mitsubishi — and a hard-to-beat insurance option underwritten by AON.

Mitsubishi offer a huge range of accessories for the Triton, from dress-up to busi-

ness necessities, to ensure all buyers’ needs are taken care of.

80s. In fact Capri (after the Italian island) is a name Ford companies have used on a variety of models dating back to the 1950s. It started with the Lincoln Cosmopolitan Capri (1950/51) and Lincoln Capri (1952-59). In the early 1960s it reappeared as the Ford Consul Capri (Consul 335) out of Britain, and later across the Atlantic as the Mercury Comet Capri (1966/67). Pictured above left is a 1963 Ford Consul Capri seen at last month’s 19th Annual Henry Ford Memorial Day Display and Swap Meet at Claudelands Showgrounds. In 1969 the most familiar Capri was launched at the Brussels Motor Show — a European Ford developed as a ‘baby Mustang’ to cash in on the American car’s popularity. European Capris were built in Britain and Germany. German versions were also sold in the US as the Mercury Capri right through the most of the 1970s. Imports stopped in 1977 and those models were sold through 1978. From 1979 until 1986 the Mercury Capri was in fact a rebadged Ford Mustang. Pictured above at Claudelands is one of these models — a 1980 5 litre V8 Mercury Capri. The following model Mercury Capri Convertible (1989 — 1994) must have seemed like a comedown. Built in Australia, it was a front wheel drive and based on the Mazda 323 and had either a 1.6 litre (100hp) or 1.6 turbo (132hp) four cylinder engine. Source: Wikipedia

Heads up — it’s a new Holden BY DEAN TAYLOR

L

ast month DriveBy tested its first new VF Holden Commodore — the SV6. This month we’ve jumped right to the top of the range — taking Rosetown Holden’s Calais V through its paces. Actually I would say I that isn’t correct — this car is so capable I got nowhere near testing its full capabilities. The 3.6 litre V6 delivers 210kW of power and 350Nm of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. Flick the gear lever sideways, and is a manual — and automatically engages Sport Mode. The change-downs sound fantastic and performance is enhanced. Amazingly all this has been achieved alongside improvements in fuel consumption — in fact the six

cylinder Commodores are rated at a bit over 8l/100km. That is more than 20 percent better than the outgoing model. As well as the stunning new body design, the Calais V has an outstanding interior, with beautiful leather seats, which are also heated, great finish and an array of technology I have no hope of explaining. Holden’s MyLink colour touch screen runs a fantastic Bose sound system, satellite navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and a host of other features. I’ve already described the new car’s automatic parking features. All models get electric park brake, Advanced Park Assist, rear view camera and trailer sway control. The Calais V adds blind spot warning, lane change warning and forward obstruction warning. If you get too close to vehicles in

front it prepares the vehicle for an emergency stop. On the Calais there is also heads up display — with vital information projected onto the bottom of the windscreen so the driver can keep their eyes on the road. Again this is programmable — I found simple speed, speed limit warnings and such things as high beam and indicators useful. The shift light setting on public roads is unnecessary because you only get to change up once before you are breaking the law, and the G force gauge only made me try to go harder in corners to get a higher reading. But they are there if you want them. In fact personalising the Calais via the available programmable options will probably take care of the first week of ownership. Aerodynamics have been enhanced with a wraparound air dam up front and grille blockers which stop too much air getting into the engine bay. Wheel arch flares have

been trimmed and the cars get underbody panels to keep things slippery. Holden say it is not only the most hi-tech and well built Commodore — but best value considering what is

offered. The public will decide, but this new range of VF Commodores certainly come with a huge list of features usually reserved for higher priced competitors.

But back to the performance and handling. The Calais V runs on meaty 19’’ alloys and rubber and uses new electric power steering which has been tuned for a faster response to make the car feel more agile. It works.

Variety Bash heads west

Safety ratings help buyers chose wisely

R

Foxfotography

FORD-FANATIC Ewen Gilmour has issued a fundraising challenge to other Westies for this year’s Variety Mini Bash.

W

estie Ewen Gilmour has issued a challenge to for next month’s Variety Mini Bash, which will issue grants to local kids in need, when it visits his part of the country. ‘‘Don’t leave it all to the classic car nuts who drive in the Bash,’’ he says. ‘‘They’ve worked to raise funds for months, now and it’s our turn!’’ The veteran Basher in his GT Radial stretched Falcon says this year he’s issued a chal-

lenge to local schools and clubs. ‘‘Run cake stalls, wash cars or do anything legal you can think of to raise funds for kids, then come along on September 21 to meet the Bashers, admire our cars and fire engines, enjoy the Bash’s light-hearted flavour — and hand over your donation.’’ Gilmour says the money goes to Kiwi kids who need a hand-up — books for their library, an insulin pump to help a child lead a normal life,

sports equipment for rural schools — with Kiwis helping local Kiwis. ‘‘Variety — the Children’s Charity named the Bash after the original bush-bashing event,’’ he says. ‘‘But this year the cars and their whacky crews won’t be bush-bashing, we’ll be shaking buckets and delivering entertainment around the Pukekohe region, and that’s your chance,’’ he says. ‘Bring funds you’ve raised along to South Auckland Ford

around 10.30am on Saturday,’’ says Ford-nut Gilmour. ‘‘Or turn up at McDonald’s Pukekohe car park from 8am to 9am on Sunday while the crews have breakfast, as they fuel up with energy to take kids with cancer for a spin round Pukekohe track. ‘‘Give your donation to your favourite team and make sure you tell them who it’s from,’’ says Gilmour. ‘‘I’ll be twisting arms to get a prize for the biggest donor on the day.’’

efreshed safety ratings for used cars help consumers prioritise vehicle safety when they consider their next purchase. The NZ Transport Agency and the AA have welcomed the release of the 21st annual update of Used Car Safety Ratings. The ratings are calculated from real-life crashes. Each year, another year’s worth of data is added to update vehicles’ safety ratings. The data now includes information from more than six million vehicles in police-reported road crashes and more than 1.4 million injured road users across New Zealand and Australia. It shows the difference in the risk of death or serious injury in a crash between the worst and the best rated car was more than nine times for vehicles built from 1996. More than 200 models have received a Used Car Safety Rating, including most of the popular vehicles sold in New Zealand. The Transport Agency’s group manager Access and Use Celia Patrick says the updated data shows that the range of safe second hand cars is increasing. ‘‘There is an ever-increasing number of safe second-hand cars available at all price points,’’ says Ms Patrick. ‘‘The data behind the latest Used Car Safety Ratings has been added to our RightCar website. People in the market to buy a used vehicle can check out the website to help them choose a safe car in the class of their choice AA general manager motoring services Stella Stocks says 109 vehicles rated as excellent or good safe choices and 54 rated poorly. ‘‘This shows why it’s important to check out the safety of a vehicle before making a purchase,’’ Ms Stocks says. ‘‘It’s not always obvious to consumers about what makes one vehicle safer than another so we encourage consumers to learn what to look for and buy the safest car they can afford. ‘‘Buyers should be looking for features such as electronic stability control and airbags at a minimum. These make a real difference in keeping drivers and their passengers safe in the event of a crash.’’ The Used Car Safety Ratings are available at online, at aa.co.nz/ucsr and rightcar.govt.nz or brochures can be picked up at AA locations.
