2013-2014 9th Grade Pre-AP English I Summer Reading Assignment Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card Overview: Every student entering the 9th grade Pre-AP English I program is expected to complete a summer reading assignment. Students may check out a copy of Ender’s Game from their middle school through their language arts class. A student may purchase a copy of the book in order to be able to write in it, but any student may mark up (annotate) an issued book through the use of sticky notes. Students may also access the book electronically if s/he chooses. Novels will be returned to the English I PAP teacher upon completion of assignments in the 2013-2014 school year. This paper outlined below will be due the first day of school, August 26; other work will be assigned relating to the novel at that time. For their assignment, students are required to 1. Read the entire novel 2. Complete an original one page reaction to the novel (See topics below) For your reaction paper, please choose one of the following topics: A. React to a character or characters: How do you feel about Ender, Valentine, the people in control of Ender, or Peter? How has the author crafted events to make you feel the way you do? B. React to situation(s) in the novel. For example, you could write about the training of Ender, or the adult’s use of him to end the war. C. React to setting: How does the author use the freedom of future/space to craft an entirely new setting? How well were you able to picture and interact with this foreign setting? Did you find it to be realistic? D. React to theme: What big ideas and messages did you find in the novel? Did you agree with the idea as presented by the author? E. React to the title: Did you think the title was appropriate for the book? How does it function both literally and thematically? Would there be a more appropriate title? F. React to the author himself: Orson Scott Card has stated that, “Children are a perpetual, self-renewing underclass, helpless to escape from the decisions of adults until they become adults themselves.” Does Ender’s Game prove or disprove this opinion? Format Directions: If typed: Paper should be typed, double spaced in 12 point Times New Roman or Calibri font, with 1” margins. If Handwritten: Paper should be neatly written on clean, college ruled paper, front side of each page only. Your response should be at least 300 words (Which may come out to more than one handwritten page, depending on your handwriting size).
