Overview The 3rd Annual New York City Poetry Festival will be held on Governors Island’s Colonel’s Row on July 27th and 28th, 2013. The Poetry Society of New York, producers of The Poetry Brothel, will once again invite New Yorkers to come together for this two day festival to celebrate NYC’s vibrant poetry community. The event will include over 50 poetry organizations and 200 poets on its three stages; a Vendor’s Village where local booksellers, artists and craft makers will sell their wares; a VIP Tent sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery for festival sponsors and members of The Poetry Society of New York; healthy and delicious food options provided by the Kimchi Taco Truck, Morris Grilled Cheese, Mud Coffee, and Palenque Columbian Food Truck; poetry-inspired installation art throughout, and, of course, the FREE and legendary Children’s Festival at NYCPF! More than 2,500 paying visitors are expected to attend the festival, and more than 10,000 others who visit Governors Island are expected to stroll around the circumference of the festival, pop into the children’s festival, and/or enjoy the entertainment from over the fence. The stories on television, radio and print will reach another million plus people including corporations, educators, and cultural figures, as well as the general public. The Festival has the opportunity to boost tourism, promote the public image of New York City, and stimulate interest in our local literary culture.

Summary of Cultural Merit The purpose of this festival has been to liberate poets and their work from the dark corners of bars, bookstore, and coffee shops and their halogen-lit college campuses, and to bring together as many NYC poets as possible, in the bright light of day, to meet, mingle, and collaborate. Fostering an open, accessible, diverse, innovative, hip, and culturally prominent literary community lies at the core of The Poetry Society of New York's mission. While there are still a few entrenched poetry establishments, for many writers and artists, and even the general public, they can seem remote and inaccessible; The Poetry Society of New York aims not only to bridge these gaps, but to unify this city's poetry community in ways never before thought possible. By opening doors to diverse and unique artistic interactions, the New York City Poetry Festival electrifies arts and literature, brings poetry to new light in the public eye, and ultimately, allows New York City the be rightful center of the poetry world. The First Annual New York City Poetry Festival in 2011 was honored to present such award-winning writers as Yusef Komunyakaa, Matthea Harvey, and Matthew Rohrer, but more importantly the festival gave poets and poetry lovers from all five boroughs an opportunity to hear, appreciate, and interact with poets whom they might never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. The Second Annual New York City Poetry Festival presented ex-Poet Laureate of the United States, Mark Strand, National Book Award winner, Patricia Smith, and widely celebrated actress and emerging poet, Amber Tamblyn, among 200 other New York City poets, and over 50 artists of other mediums. By reaching outside the established poetry communities, The Poetry Society of New York hopes to create new audiences for poetry and facilitate collaborations between poets and other artists. Similarly, by reaching out to colleges, high schools, and grade schools, the festival hopes to encourage, educate, and inspire fledgling writers of all ages to become a part of New York’s diverse and dynamic poetry scene. 2013’s Third Annual New York City Poetry Festival will: a) b) c) d) e)

Facilitate the unification of the New York City poetry community Foster relationships between New York poets and other artists Develop new audiences for New York’s literary communities Elevate the literary significance of New York’s cultural landscape Build a platform upon which children and adults can explore their poetic voices

Sponsorship Highlights Marketing Highlights The New York City Poetry Festival comes alive with a vast and diverse group of poetic voices ranging from former poet laureates to emerging local writers to children who have just written their first poems. Supplementary Publicity Opportunity: The Typewriter Project Summary of Cultural Merit: Last year it was reported that the world's last Typewriter Factory closed its doors. Despite the practical obsolescence of these machines it is no secret that they have remained a vital companion to the writers of this city. The charm, immediacy, and tactile pleasure of actually typing on a typewriter will never lose its appeal. The Poetry Society of New York has created The Typewriter Project to help remind both the citizen of this city and our visitors of the simple pleasure of typing a few lines on one of these iconic machines. Project Description: The Typewriter Project will follow the model of the "Play Me I'm Yours" public piano project of 2010. We will place desks with chairs and typewriters at various locations throughout the city and invite anyone passing by to sit down and add to the narrative of that specific corner of the city. Each typewriter will be outfitted by a particular sculptor or installation artist whose job will be to construct something that protects the large scroll of paper that will feed through the machine over the course of the project. The staff of The Poetry Society of New York will maintain the workstations and be responsible for creating and uploading photos of the feed onto the project's website daily. Detailed Plans for Publicity: In the hopes of building publicity for the New York City Poetry Festival, we will run the Typewriter Project for six weeks starting on Friday, June 8th through Sunday, July 22nd, the final day of the festival. Concurrently, we will run a six-week subway ad campaign with three stages. During the first two weeks, the ads will read, “Poetry is Dead, Right?” During the next two weeks, they will read, “Poetry is Dead. Write.” And during the last two weeks, we will post a series of beautiful lines written by the citizens of New York City on typewriters throughout the streets. Finally, we will wrap up the project with a celebrity or famous poet reading selected sections from the project on stage at the festival.

Budget Notes Scenario 1 is a “bare bones” version of the festival. This is the minimum amount of money that we will need in order to make the festival happen. Scenario 2 is a version of the festival with slightly higher production values. We’ve budgeted in sound barriers, an on-site sound technician, more pay for the organizers, metrocards for staff and interns, and some money for advertising. Scenario 3 is a version of the festival in which we budget enough money to pay all of our staff members, to include more seating and trash cans, and to do an art installation/advertising campaign called The Typewriter Project.
