Equipment: 35mm film camera with manual settings & a minimum of two B&W rolls of film. (If you need to borrow a film camera for the summer, swing by M1 before exams. I also have film I can give you if you don’t want to purchase your own.) Criteria: A minimum of five 8x10 prints (due date will be provided on development day) and at least one spread in your sketchbook documenting the formation of your idea of the project. (This can include a response to the articles on Gregory Crewdson’s work.) Prompt: It is human nature to try to interpret what we see. However sometimes it isn’t clear what is happening. In a medium that that traditionally documents the actual, ambiguity with abstraction, removal, hiding and lying can add to the power of the image. In this assignment, you are to find or stage a series of photographs in which the meaning takes on an ambiguous, mysterious, or psychologically charged quality. The five images should have a similar theme or work with similar ideas without being repetitive. Strive for images to be successful individually as well as part of the series. Before you begin taking pictures, read these two interviews with photographer Gregory Crewdson: Bomb Magazine: Interview with Gregory Crewdson and Fstoppers Interview with Gregory Crewdson Due Date: First full day of class we will develop film together and I will collect your sketchbooks. (I will review film development processes with juniors.) Evaluation Criteria: Creative approach to the concept Creative use of the camera Visual coherence Skill Level - print quality (good quality negatives is the first step!)

Part 3: Senior Direction Brainstorming Sketchbook Prompt for Seniors Only · ·

·

Spend time brainstorming the direction of your senior year in IB Photography, your senior show, and personal goals for the course. Write about this in your sketchbook. Write in your sketchbook about what you want your senior show to be about along with what process and techniques you want to incorporate. You may have already explored the idea, techniques and processes during your junior year or it may be a new direction you plan to pursue. Remember that the work in your senior show is supposed to be cohesive while also showing the range of your abilities and skills. Finally, write in your sketchbook about the first pieces you plan to begin creating when you return in the fall and the first things you need to do right off the bat to accomplish them. This can be research related or production related.
