THE WORLD FORUM for motor museums The first World Forum for Motor Museums was held at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu in the United Kingdom. Its theme was “The Way Ahead.” Since then the World Forum for Motor Museums has met every other year, hosted each time by a different automotive museum. World Forum for Motor Museums conferences have discussed matters as diverse as lock construction and the psychology of marketing, as well as addressing the common challenges, and their solutions, encountered by all motor museums around the world. The theme for the 2014 conference is: ATTRACTING NEW AUDIENCES.

THE National Association of Automobile Museums The National Association of Automobile Museums (NAAM) is dedicated to serving automobile museums across the United States and Canada—whether small or large—by providing a means to share ideas and gather information about a variety of topics. The NAAM quarterly e-newsletter features instructional articles, updates about association activities and news about member museums, all of which help members stay connected throughout the year. Other important membership benefits include an annual conference (held in conjunction with the World Forum for Motor Museums for 2014) with sessions organized by professionals in their fields, access to a variety of practical organizational and collections management tools, and email announcements that offer important reminders about services and activities. We welcome you to make NAAM your “go-to” resource in an ever-evolving museum environment.

WELCOME

LOS ANGELES Los Angeles is the largest city in California and the second largest city in the USA. It is located on the southern coast of California about 125 miles north of the Mexican border and 400 miles south of San Francisco. Los Angeles natives inhabit the entire plain and all the local hills plus the sides of the mountain ranges and into all of the connecting valleys. Unlike most cities, Los Angeles does not have a distinct urban center. It is a collection of individual communities tied together by a complex network of roads and freeways. Each community offers a uniquely different character. The four major airports serving Los Angeles (in order from most convenient to least) are LAX, Burbank-Glendale, Long Beach and Ontario International. In some years, winter rains extend into the month of March. In others it is reasonably dry, but temperatures are normally moderate.

THE PETERSEN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM The Petersen Automotive Museum, recognized internationally for its innovative design, is dedicated to the interpretive study of the automobile and its influence on our culture and lives. Encompassing more than 300,000 square feet, three floors of automotive history take the visitor through time and trace the automobile’s influence on the culture of Los Angeles. The first floor follows the history of the automobile with lifelike dioramas and settings. The second floor is devoted to five rotating exhibition galleries with state-ofthe-art presentations of a diverse and exciting array of vehicles. The third floor houses the May Family Children’s Discovery Center and is designed to spark children’s interest in science by way of the automobile with its 6,500 squarefoot, “hands-on” education center. A dazzling all-glass penthouse conference center and Founder’s Lounge on the fourth floor will serve as the hub of conference activities. World Forum/NAAM Joint Conference March 24-28, 2014

Session II — Engaging visitors • Nina Simon Nina Simon took on the task of turning around the floundering Museum of Art & History in Santa Cruz with the aim of creating for it a dynamic new future. In just two years the museum tripled attendance, increased funding, and transformed its role in the community. Ms. Simon will explore how you can apply theories of participatory design to engage your visitors as partners in making your museum as vibrant as possible. NINA SIMON is the Executive Director of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History, where she led an institutional turnaround based on grassroots community participation. Author of The Participatory Museum (2010) and the popular “Museum 2.0” blog, Simon previously worked as an independent consultant to over one hundred museums and cultural centers around the world and an interactive exhibit designer in science and history museums.

BREAK • Connor Penthouse Terrace Session III — Marketing Must-dos for small museums Ruedi Baer What is the difference between marketing for fast moving consumer goods, a museum of arts, and a tiny museum of old trucks? Where should a small museum focus its efforts if it cannot afford to hire a marketing professional and doesn’t command a large marketing budget? These questions and more will be answered using the example of the Saurer Museum, a small but important technical museum in Arbon, Switzerland. DR. RUDOLF BAER, president of the Saurer Museum, is a senior strategy consultant in IT security. As a second, third, and fourth job he runs the Oldtimer Club Saurer, the association of the friends of the museum, and the museum itself. He serves as the museum’s chief PR officer, oversees the help desk, and serves as editor-in-chief of the “OCS Gazette,” the museum’s quarterly review.

TUESDAY, MARCH 25 CONFERENCE DAY 1 (SESSIONS) (CONT.) 1:30pm–2:20pm

Session IV — Exhibit Development • Goetz Penzel Until 2012, the exhibitions of the Dresden Transport Museum were little more than a chronological sequence of vehicles, an approach that was appreciated by “experts,” but which left the general public unfulfilled. In conjunction with a change in sponsorship, the museum developed a new master plan in 2011 that led to improved strategies for attracting new audiences, including more activities and a complete rethinking of its new Street Vehicles exhibition, the design of which will be unveiled at the joint conference. GOETZ ULRICH PENZEL, M.A., majored in History at the Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg. Upon completion of his studies he worked for Deutsche Lufthansa in Frankfurt/Main and T-Systems in Munich. In 2003 he became Curator for Aviation at the Dresden Transport Museum. In 2011 he took on the Curatorship for Shipping and was promoted to Head of Collections/Exhibitions two years later. He developed the new Aviation exhibition at the Dresden Transport Museum in 2012 and is now involved in the collaborative effort to redesign the new Street Vehicles exhibition at the Dresden Transport Museum.

SESSION V — Car Manufacturers’ Collections • Peter Mitchell Many large car companies have held collections of their past products for years, but have only recently taken an active interest in making their collections accessible to the public. This session will concentrate on the operation and management of car manufacturers’ collections and their fundamental differences to public and private car museums. PETER MITCHELL is the Director Trustee of the Jaguar Heritage Trust and the Coventry Transport Museum and runs his own consulting company, Museum & Classic Car Services. After joining London’s National Museum of Science & Technology as a Trainee Curator, Mitchell went on to establish the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust. He laid down the foundation of the collection which now forms the basis of the Coventry Transport Museum and became the driving force behind the building of the Heritage Motor Centre.

Learn useful tips for working with the media, including how to prepare for the interview, what to do during the interview, how to handle difficult situations, your delivery, as well as what to do after the interview. Strategies will be put into action through role play with attendees from mock interviews to situational scenarios. JACKIE FRADY is President and Executive Director of the National Automobile Museum, The Harrah Collection, in Reno, Nevada, where she is credited with raising awareness of the Museum that culminated in the retirement of a large construction debt. BREAK • Connor Penthouse Terrace Session II — Opening the Store: Reserve Collections Tim Bryan An ever increasing number of motor museums are looking for ways to improve access to their collections that are hidden away in storage. Tim Bryan will share how the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust addressed this issue through the creation of a new Collections Centre and explain how the project has benefitted both the collection and the public. Chairman of the Association of British Transport and Engineering Museums, TIM BRYAN began his career at the Great Western Railway (GWR) Museum in Swindon, England before playing a leading role in the creation of the award-winning STEAM: Museum of the GWR in 2000. He was appointed Head of Collections and Interpretation at the Heritage Motor Centre in 2004 and is currently heading the project to build a multi-million dollar facility for the Trust.

Session III — Conservation Case Study: Ford GT40 Matt Anderson, Robert Coyle and Gary Martin In 2012, The Henry Ford’s Le Mans-winning 1967 Mark IV race car was damaged during transport to the United Kingdom. This session will examine the extent of the damage, the collaborative nature of the work to repair it, and the steps taken to ensure that other cars are not harmed in future moves. It will also provide a forum for the continued debate over the risks and rewards inherent in the shipment and display of historic motor vehicles. MATT ANDERSON is the John and Horace Dodge Curator of Transportation at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan. He oversees the development, care and interpretation of the museum’s collection of more than 250 automobiles. Matt is also responsible for the museum’s collection of railroad locomotives and rolling stock, as well as aircraft. He has previously worked at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland; the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend, Indiana; and the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul, Minnesota. ROBERT CHARLES COYLE received his education from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. In his early career he focused on Public Sculpture commissions. Today his works can be found in the collections of the Art Gallery of Windsor, the Stratford Festival of Canada, Pearson International Airport, The Museum of Science-Boston and The Department of Defense Archives. Surrounded throughout his life by museum practice, he accepted the position of Transportation Specialist with the Conservation Department at the Henry Ford in 2011. GARY MARTIN has been working at Dan Gurney’s All American Racers, of Santa Ana, California, for more than 25 years. He built the majority of the tooling and jigs for AAR’s innovative DeltaWing car of 2012 and was Lead Mechanic and Crew Chief for Juan Manuel Fangio II’s IMSA GTP and Indy Car programs. His wins as Crew Chief include the 1992 and 1993 IMSA Camel GTP Championships. Prior to joining AAR, Gary worked for Clay Young Racing, where he ran a factory Pontiac in the Kelly Girl Trans Am Series.

Networking Luncheon — Food Trucks • Connor Penthouse Terrace NAAM Annual Meeting and Luncheon • Founder’s Lounge (NAAM Members only) Session IV — Exhibit Labels: How do we reach a broader audience? • Aaron Warkentin and Derek Moore It is common among automobile museums to provide labeling, both for vehicles on display and exhibitry, which is focused upon a select group of visitors, often the technologically savvy and historically inclined visitor. But how do we reach a broader audience with signage? Through discussion of the presenters’ experience in label writing and engaging the attendees in label writing exercises, we hope to encourage a broader view of transportation museum interpretation. Derek E. Moore is the Frederick C. and Kathleen S. Crawford Curator of Transportation History at the Western Reserve Historical Society. Derek has a B.S. in History from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan and is currently working on his M.S. in Technology
