Title: Let’s Have A Ball Life Skill Area: Managing Resources LIFE SKILLS TAUGHT How to have fun with simple-to-make toys Coordination Teamwork Recycling Managing Resources MATERIALS NEEDED 1. Clean old nylon pantyhose with no large runners 2. Polyester fiberfill stuffing 3. Scissors 4. Large paper 5. Colorful markers 6. Bucket, trash can, or other similar container PROCEDURES 1. For ease of handling, cut apart the two pantyhose legs. 2. Tie a knot near the toe end of the panty hose and tighten knot. 3. Get a large handful of polyester fiberfill stuffing. Run fist with stuffing down into the hose and deposit stuffing. Repeat if desired. Size of balls will vary but must be fairly soft. 4. When enough stuffing is deposited, tie second knot immediately above the stuffing and tighten. All knots must be firm. Then—before cutting this ball off—tie a third knot about 1 inch from the second knot. This is the first knot of the next ball. Repeat from step 3, making certain there are 2 knots about 1 inch apart between every ball. 5. Cut balls apart between knots. 6. Draw a colorful target on the large paper for target practice. On rainy days play indoor basketball (bucketball?) without fear of getting hurt or breaking windows. 7. Outdoors, hose balls can be used to play tag, or can be used in water games (with supervision) dipped in water and thrown at targets.

DISCUSSION Discuss the value of recycling and fun with very little expense. Emphasize the importance of physical activity, teamwork, and playing outdoors. HOME ACTIVITY Make more hose balls with discarded pantyhose. Experiment with other stuffings, such as Styrofoam peanuts, old cotton socks, nylon hose.
