Week 4 Assignment: Application Assignment Finalizing Course Assignments For a campus to make lasting change, school improvement must be an ongoing, continuous process. You will demonstrate your understanding of continuous improvement by (1) modifying the agenda for learner-centered staff development and (2) creating an action plan for an area of improvement that you identified on the local provisions of the TEA learning system. Part 1: Learner-Centered Staff Development Directions: Work cooperatively online with two of your colleagues to revise and finalize the agenda for your learnercentered staff development. Reflect on the modification(s) by answering the guiding questions. Session Purpose: To assist teachers with reinforcing 3rd grade math concepts Learning Objective to Be Addressed: The student solves problems by collecting, organizing, displaying, and interpreting sets of data. Deann Thompson February 3, 2011 and what further training and/or support is needed

How did you modify the staff development agenda? Why did you make the modifications? How do you anticipate that the modification(s) will improve the staff development? I modified the staff development agenda to focus on the teachers who are in the session as well as made sure the agenda covered items (such as the evaluation) that is required in my school district. I made the modifications off of the recommendations of my collaborators. I wanted my agenda to be a bit more specific where anyone could follow it and offer the staff development session. I hope that the changes make the agenda easier to follow as well as utilize practices that have already been put into place by my school district.

Part 2: TEA Learning System: Action Plan Directions: Review the TEA learning system chart that you completed in Part 1 of the Analysis Assignment. Based on your learning during Weeks 2 - 4, revise the improvement ideas in the chart. Select an area of improvement from the chart. Complete the action plan for the improvement initiative:  Tasks/action steps  Responsibilities  Resources  Timeline  Staff development  Monitoring  Evaluation Collaborate online with a colleague to obtain feedback on your action plan.

Teachers-use curriculum documents to plan instruction

Time- Two 2-hour training sessions

Campus Adminrequire teachers to document lessons

People NeededCurriculum Specialists

Review session attendance records to see who has attended the sessions, work with teachers to continue increasing the use of the curriculum documents, work with principals to ensure documents are being used by their teachers

An increase in attendance at staff development session related to curriculum documents, increase in Benchmark scores, increase in access of curriculum documents

What will be done? Teachers will effectively utilize the district created curriculum documents to improve instruction

Materials NeededCurriculum Documents posted on district portal system Learner-Centered Staff Development Plan

Teachers would attend two 2-hour training sessions devoted to effectively using the district created curriculum documents. Training would cover logging in to the district portal system and accessing the curriculum documents. Teachers would become familiar with the design of the curriculum documents for each of the four core subject areas as well as locate the scope and sequence related to each document. Teachers would then work with groups from their same grade level to create lesson plans that can be implemented into their classrooms.

Reflections on Collaboration and Improvement What change did you make in the action plan as a result of the feedback from a colleague? As a result of the feedback from my colleague, I added a component that included campus administrators as a responsible party along with the teachers. As instructional leaders, the administrators must be held accountable for the instruction taking place on their campus. Teachers also see that they have the support of their instructional leaders in implementing the curriculum.

How does collaboration enhance improvement efforts? What new ideas emerged as a result of the collaborative effort? Collaboration enhances improvement efforts by giving a fresh eye to the product. The collaborators are able to give an objective opinion based on the facts where the person who actually created the product may have more emotional ties to the process. One new idea that emerged as a result of the collaborative effort was the piece to include campus administrators in the process.

Why must campus improvement be ongoing and continuous? Similar questions to this have appeared throughout this course, and I can’t help but ask “Why wouldn’t campus improvement be ongoing and continuous?” Every year the students change and along with that so have their interests and learning styles. Campus improvement needs to be ongoing and continuous to support these changes. Campus improvement should be never ending so there is always something for students, teachers, and administrators to strive for. Repeating the same thing becomes stagnant and when that happens, education no longer become beneficial to the students.
