Abstract An annotated checklist of identified oribatid mites from Cuba, including 16 species, 9 genera and 4 families, is provided. Three new species, Prototritia triangularibus Niedbała sp. nov. (Protoplophoridae), Hoplophthiracarus vinalesensis Niedbała sp. nov. and Protophthiracarus paratripartitus Niedbała sp. nov. (both Steganacaridae), are described from leaf litter. Three species of the subgenus Atropacarus (Hoplophorella)—A. (H.) andrei (Balogh, 1958), A. (H.) brachys Niedbała, 2004 and A. (H.) stilifer (Hammer, 1961)—are recorded in the Cuban mite fauna for the first time. Key words: Oribatida, ptyctimous mites, checklist, new species, new record, morphology, systematics, Cuba

Introduction Ptyctimous mites (Acari, Oribatida) of Cuba are poorly known (Călugăr & Vasiliu 1977; Scull 1985a, b; Starý 1992, 1993; Niedbała 2004, 2009; Niedbała & Prieto 2006; Niedbała & Starý 2010). In the course of taxonomic identification of the Cuban mites from collection of the Museum of Zoology of Tyumen State University (Russia), we found three new species, belonging to the genera Prototritia Berlese, 1916 (Protoplophoridae), Hoplophthiracarus Jacot, 1933 (Steganacaridae) and Protophthiracarus Balogh, 1972 (Steganacaridae). The generic characters of Prototritia, Hoplophthiracarus and Protophthiracarus, and identification keys and analysis on geographical distribution to the Neotropical species were presented by Niedbała (2004). The main goal of our paper is to describe and illustrate three new species. Additionally, we present an annotated checklist of identified ptyctimous mites with notes on new records.

Material and methods The mites were submerged in lactic acid and mounted on temporary cavity slides for the duration of the study. Body measurements are presented in micrometers. Length of the body setae was measured in lateral aspect. All types of new species are preserved in the Department of Animal Taxonomy and Ecology, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland. In the Checklist of ptyctimous mites subsection, the authors and years of species are not included in References section. List of collecting sites in Cuba: 1—Parque Nacional Alejandro de Humboldt, 20°30'N, 74°40'W, leaf litter in forest, unknown date and collector (mites were previously deposited in the Museum of Zoology of Tyumen State University, Russia).

Descriptions Prototritia triangularibus Niedbała sp. nov. (Fig. 1A–E) Description. Measurements of holotype. Prodorsum: length 172, width 131, height 76; setae: ss 30, in 56, le 30, ex1 13, ex2 7, ro 38; notogaster: length 240, width 220, height 177; setae: c1 38, cp 33, e1 51, f1 66; genitoaggenital plate 63×38, anoadanal plate 88×15. Measurements of paratypes. Prodorsum: length 156–162, height 63–66; notogaster: length 240–244, height 198–202. 1.

Atropacarus (Hoplophorella) andrei (Balogh, 1958) was wrongly synonymized with A. (H.) vitrinus (Berlese, 1913) by Niedbała (2000). Liu & Oconnor (2015) showed differences between the two species and essential difference is presence of median band in dorsal part of notogaster in A. (H.) andrei.

FIGURE 1A–E. Prototritia triangularibus Niedbała sp. nov. (holotype); measurements: prodorsum: length 172, width 131, height 76; notogaster: length 240, width 220, height 177. Integument. Colour yellowish. Cuticle punctate. Prodorsum with large median triangular protuberance. Lateral carinae well discernible, long. Sensilli with short stalk and spindle-shaped, flattened head, pointed distally and covered with slender cilia. Interlamellar setae elongated, fusiform, covered with long spines. Lamellar and exobothridial setae needleform, smooth. Rostral setae long, needleform, directed inwards and covered with some long cilia. Relation of lengths: in>ro>ss=le>ex1>ex2.

Notogaster. “Notogastral” setae needleform, attenuate; setae of rows e and f longer than setae of rows c and h; setae c3 more remote from anterior margin than setae c1 and c2. Ventral region. Genitoaggenital plates with distinct longitudinal furrows, separating 5 pairs of genital setae from 3 pairs of aggenital setae. Anoadanal plates narrow, with 8 pairs of setae (only right plate of holotype with 7 setae) arranged in longitudinal row. All setae of ventral region relatively long. Legs. Tarsi heterotridactylous, claws shorter than tarsi. Material examined. Holotype and two paratypes from Locality 2. Etymology. The specific name triangularibus is Latin for “triangular” and refers to the triangular shape of prodorsal protuberance. Comparison. The new species is morphologically similar to Prototritia palaciosi Mahunka & MejiaRecamier, 1998 from Mexico by the shape of rostral setae and number and arrangement of “notogastral”, genital and anal setae. It is distinguishable by the presence of prodorsal median triangular protuberance, different shape of sensilli, interlamellar, lamellar and exobothridial setae and especially by presence of longitudinal furrows on genitoaggenital plates.

Hoplophthiracarus vinalesensis Niedbała sp. nov. (Fig. 2A–G) Description. Measurements of holotype. Measurements of paratype. Prodorsum: length 156, width 110, height 63; notogaster: length 313, width 208, height 192. Integument. Colour whitish, integument punctate. Prodorsum with feeble lateral carinae. Sigillar fields feeble, median very short, shorter than lateral fields. Sensilli long, with fusiform head covered with small spines. Interlamellar setae erect, curved posteriorly, ciliate in distal half. Lamellar setae short, spiniform. Rostral setae erect, rough, situated near each other (in–in/ro–ro=3). Exobothridial setae short. Notogaster. Notogaster with short (c1ro>ss>le>ex. Notogaster with 15 pairs of rigid, rather, thick, short (c1
