About the Cover: As the ACS Spring 2011 National Meeting confronts the theme of Natural Resources, thinking on the state of that most precious – water – is apropos. Indeed, in this first quarter of the International Year of Chemistry, Water in the Environment is the central focus. While certainly not a true “universal solvent”, natural bodies of water do contain many chemical species that pervade the environment, as continually reported on in ES&T. For example, the cover image draws from Phillips et al’s study (dx.doi.org/10.1021/es1031135) on the mercury loadings in Canadian alpine lakes since the mid-19th century. Cover image courtesy of Vanessa J.A. Phillips. View the article.
