About the speakers Daniel Müller studied geology and mineralogy at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, after serving for three years as a First Lieutenant in the German Air Force. He received his Ph.D. from the Key Centre for Strategic Mineral Deposits, University of Western Australia, and completed his postdoctoral (Habilitation) degree at the Institute for Mineralogy, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany. Daniel is a highly experienced geologist, having spent over 24 years exploring for base- and precious-metal deposits with international mining companies such as Placer Dome, North Limited, Ivanhoe Mines, Citadel Resource Group, Coventry Resources, BHP Billiton and QPX Chile, in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America, and the Middle East. His exploration teams discovered additional resources of over 200,000 oz. of gold both at Kanowna Belle gold mine, Australia, and in the Jabal Shayban gold project, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, respectively. He is currently based in Santiago, where he is prospecting for porphyry copper deposits in the Chilean Andes with the Target Generation Team (NDP Team) of QPX Chile. Emeritus Professor David I Groves was Director of the Research Centres in economic geology prior to CET and was with others responsible for gaining the initial funding for the CET before retiring. Dr Groves has been President of the Geological Society of Australia, SEG and SGA. He has supervised or co-supervised over 85 PhD, 55 MSc and 120 BSc Honours students at UWA and overseas. He has authored or co-authored approximately 500 papers and book chapters, largely on Archean evolution, komatiite-associated Ni-Cu deposits, orogenic gold deposits, the role of lithosphere in global metallogeny, and prospectivity mapping. Recently, he has been awarded both the SEG Penrose Gold Medal and SGA-Newmont Gold Medal for his career acheivements. Currently, Dr Groves is using his academic knowledge to aid junior exploration companies to select prospective ground and explore it using appropriate deposit models. He has been involved in a recent gold discovery at Magambazi in Tanzania and a Cu-Au-Ag-Zn discovery at Terrakimti in Ethiopia. Dr. Steve Garwin has more than 30 years of experience as an exploration geologist with large and small mining companies. He has participated in the gold and copper projects of more than 25 clients in over 15 countries. He worked with Newmont Mining for ten years, including two years as Chief Geologist in Nevada. Steve is one of the leading authorities on porphyry, epithermal and Carlinstyle mineralization in the circum-Pacific region. He has been involved in several, major exploration and mining projects, including the Batu Hijau porphyry mine in Indonesia, the mines of the Carlin and Battle Mountain Trends in Nevada, and the recently discovered world-class Alpala porphyry deposit in Ecuador. Steve is an independent consultant based in Perth, Australia. He obtained his B.Sc. in geology from Stanford, M.Sc. from the University of British Columbia and Ph.D. (distinction) from the University of Western Australia. He is an adjunct research fellow at the Centre for Exploration Targeting at UWA.
