WELCOME

Congratulations, cadet! You and nineteen other cadets have the privilege to attend the Aircraft Maintenance and Manufacturing Academy (AMMA) National Cadet Special Activity (NCSA) held at the Cessna Aircraft Company in Independence, Kansas. At AMMA, you will be spending an intensive week of hands-on work in aircraft manufacturing areas ranging from basic riveting to fuselage building and control wiring, to seating construction and upholstery, engine assembly, and painting and numbering. In addition, you will enjoy engaging presentations by industry experts who maintain commercial airliners, who manufacture military aircraft, and whose enormous talent is used to manufacture experimental aircraft. Weather and schedule permitting, you may even be able to join Cessna’s pilots for a test flight in a shiny new aircraft!

GETTING STARTED

This friendly guidebook will help you complete all the forms, courses, packing lists, transportation logistics, and any other tasks that you will need to get done before your AMMA adventure. In addition, there are pages for transportation information, little insider’s tips, a general schedule you can digest, and a copy of the rules and regulations you are expected to follow at AMMA. If you want, you can also print this Guidebook and use the little check boxes to remind yourself what you have done, and what you have left to do. Please note that it is important that you check your e-mail regularly and respond to any e-mails sent by AMMA staff with the information requested. If nothing is requested, please respond with a simple acknowledgement (such as “AKN”) that you got the information. If you fail to acknowledge our e-mails promptly, we will assume you did not receive the e-mail and will attempt to contact you by telephone or by another method. Before you move on, it is crucial that you complete the following tasks:

;; Check your payment status/deadlines on CAP eServices Be advised that you must pay your activity fees per the CAP National Headquarters (NHQ) payment schedule. If you have any questions regarding payment, contact Cadet Programs at NHQ in regards to your payments. Check it here: (www.capnhq.gov)

†† Send an e-mail to [email protected] right away!

Send the e-mail with the subject: “I have the AMMA 2012 Guidebook!” - FirstName, LastName Leave the body of the e-mail blank. Make sure you use the same e-mail address we have on file!

That was easy, right? Now you can start completing the rest of AMMA’s prerequisites. Don’t worry, everything that you need to do is clearly indicated and explained; each task even has a handy little check box (q) that you can tick off once you have completed it.

WHAT YOU SHOULDN’T BRING

You should not bring the items listed below to AMMA, and you will not be able to use them for the duration of the activity. Items marked with a green asterisk (*) are allowed, however, during travel but please understand that they will be confiscated upon your arrival at AMMA.

††Portable Gaming Device* (iPod Touch, PSP, etc.) ††Mobile Phone* (iPhone, BlackBerry, etc.) ††Radios*, MP3 players*, PDA’s* ††Knives and other weapons (pocket knife, pepper spray, etc.) ††Illegal Drugs / Alcohol / Tobacco ††Jewelry ††Food* and candy* ††Drinks* (only water is allowed)

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

While you’re working at the Cessna Company facility, you’ll be required to wear eye protection at all times. Cessna provides plastic safety glasses which are reasonably comfortable if you do not normally wear glasses, or if you normally wear contact lenses; however, our experience is that cadets who wear safety glasses over their prescription glasses often feel uncomfortable. To ensure optimum comfort while at AMMA, please consider purchasing safety eyewear that will be comfortable for you. You may bring safety glasses that fit well over the top of your regular glasses, or you may purchase prescription safety glasses. Light and sound pollution in the dorm facilities may make it difficult for you to sleep at night. If you are a light sleeper or have trouble sleeping if it isn’t completely dark and/or quiet, we highly recommend you bring a sleeping mask and/or ear plugs so that you can sleep well.

THE BASICS

If you have paid your activity fee and are positive that you will be attending AMMA, then you must fill out the AMMA 2012 Transportation Form (as described in the “Forms” section of this guidebook) so that we can coordinate cadet pickups and drop-offs accordingly. The deadline for providing this information is 17 days prior to your arrival at the Academy (that deadline is midnight Tuesday, June 1st), but we would like to have your travel information as soon as you have completed your arrangements. If you decide to make changes after filling out the Transportation Form online, that’s okay; just fill out the form again with your new information.

POV ARRIVALS/DEPARTURES

If you are traveling with parents by personally owned vehicle (POV), we highly encourage you to travel to Tulsa International Airport and join others who are arriving via air transportation. Participants who reside in Kansas, Oklahoma, or other surrounding states may wish to drive directly to the Independence Community College (ICC); however, arrival at ICC must occur between 1000-1300 on Sunday, 17 June 2012, and departure must occur between 0600-0900 on Saturday, 23 June 2012, unless deviations are approved in advance. Academy activities will begin promptly at 1400, in Independence; therefore, CAP vans will depart the airport in advance of 1130 if all participants have arrived. All participants must plan to depart Tulsa International between 0700-1400 on Saturday, 23 June 2012, unless later flights are approved in advance of ticketing. Note: The Independence Municipal Airport (KIDP) serves general aviation (GA). If arriving with parents via GA aircraft, you are responsible for ground transportation with parents from KIDP to ICC. Arrival at ICC must be between 1000-1300 on Sunday, 17 June 2012, and departure with parents from ICC no later than 0900 on Saturday, 23 June 2012, unless deviations are approved in advance.

OTHER MEANS OF TRAVEL

If you’re arriving by taxi, bus, or another means of travel not mentioned above, then you’ll need to let us know more about your situation as soon as possible so we can try to make accommodations. The AMMA 2012 Transportation Form you are required to complete online is the best way for you to let us know about your unique situation, but if that isn’t enough, feel free to send us an e-mail ([email protected]) and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.

ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE STANDARDS

Please wear modest and appropriate civilian attire when traveling; do not wear your CAP uniform! Remember, you represent this NCSA, your unit, your Wing, your Region and the Civil Air Patrol.

RULES & REGS

THE RULES & REGULATIONS

The USAF Academy Honor Code will be in effect during AMMA by all members at all times. Remember, AMMA is a privilege, and not a right. You are representing CAP, so be professional, and be sharp. People are watching you whether you know it or not. This includes wear of the uniform, wear of civilian attire, the way you carry yourself, and the way you address others. The following are send-home offenses: insubordination, coeducational visitations in opposite sex rooms without supervision, gambling, use of recreational drugs, alcohol, or controlled substances. Transportation costs of cadets sent home will be at the expense of the cadet’s family.

SAFETY Safety guidelines will be followed at all times. If conditions become unsafe at any time, any senior member or cadet is expected to stop operations immediately until such time as the Safety Officer declares the condition safe. While at the Cessna factory, ear and eye protection must be worn at all times. Since you will be at the factory during working hours, you must stay alert, attentive, and follow safety procedures and instruction from AMMA and Cessna staff at all times. Also, don’t forget to hydrate frequently!

HAZING & HARASSMENT CAP has a zero tolerance policy on hazing. If in doubt about doing something while interaction with someone else, don’t do it. Hazing is defined as any conduct whereby someone causes another to suffer or be exposed to any activity that is cruel, abusive, humiliating, oppressive, demeaning, or harmful. This includes threats or implied threats to a cadet or senior member. In addition, AMMA has a zero tolerance policy against sexual actions (including sexual molestation, touching, contact, exposure, suggestions, or any other incident of a sexually orientated nature), and physical abuse (actions include striking cadets, hazing, or assault).

LANGUAGE No inappropriate language—oral or otherwise—will be tolerated at AMMA. It’s simple: If you wouldn’t say or do it in front of your grandparents, then don’t do it at AMMA. That means no cussing, derogatory slangs, or rude gestures. Be pleasant in your language, and everyone will have more fun, trust us.

CADET CONDUCT Use the “Golden Rule” in your conduct, “do unto others as they would do unto you.” Remember, you are representing CAP, so be professional. People are watching you whether you know it or not. This includes wear of the uniform, civilian attire, and the way you carry yourself and address others. Therefore, public displays of affection—while acceptable in the civilian world—are not acceptable at AMMA, and all cadets are expected to be professional in their conduct at all times. Be friendly, but keep your hands to yourself and do not make anyone uncomfortable with your conduct. Also, if male and female cadets are in the same room, the door must be opened all the way at all times. A senior member of AMMA must be present for supervision. There will be no public displays of affection (PDAs) tolerated, and a 6-inch rule will apply.

RULES & REGS

Exemplary followership will be practiced at all times during AMMA. Followership is reaching a specific goal while exercising respect for authority, a positive attitude, integrity and self-discipline. As you enjoy the privileges of AMMA, you will most often be a follower. This means you must actively look at what is going on around you, learn the reason why you are told to do certain things, and listen well. Therefore, all attendees must obey CAP regulations and fully cooperate with the legitimate orders and requests given by those appointed to positions of authority above them. Please realize there must be people who assure essential things are done correctly. However, anyone trying to force their authority on others is abusing their authority.

DORM POLICIES Cadets are guests of the Independence Community College (ICC) and the Cessna Aircraft Company. During your stay you will have high standards of care for the facilities you are using. The ICC dormitory is a standard college dormitory equipped with a TV room, a dining hall where you will eat breakfast and dinner (all lunches are sack lunches at the Cessna factory), and rooms that accommodate two cadets each. The dorms have A/C in all the rooms. While not an encampment, AMMA is an NCSA and as such you are expected to keep your spaces neat and tidy. All dorm rooms are to be kept clean, neat and free from food items at all times by the assigned occupants of each room. Common areas will be kept orderly at all times, and will be made “inspection ready” at the end of each day. There will be an ICC Dormitory Supervisor spot checking AMMA areas periodically. Cadets will be personally liable for any damage they cause. When you leave AMMA, we expect your dorm room to be nicer than you found it. Cadets will use 2200 to 2230 to prepare for bed. All cadets are to be in their assigned rooms and in bed at 2230. This means ready for sleep. Lights out will be 2230. Any cadet found in the halls after lights out will be immediately expelled from AMMA; no exceptions.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES All attendees are encouraged to make a courtesy phone call to home when they have successfully completed their trip to AMMA. If arriving by plane to the Tulsa airport, this means calling home when you have made contact with AMMA staff picking you up at the airport. If arriving by POV or other methods, this means calling home when you arrive at ICC for check-in. However, all phones and other personal electronic devices (PEDs), including cameras, will be confiscated after AMMA check-in. At the discretion of the Academy Director, cadets will be able to use certain devices during the Academy, at such times that the Academy Director, Safety Officer, and other staff agree that such use is appropriate. No access to PEDs will be allowed during Cessna manufacturing activities, or during guest speaker presentations.

MEDICATION In accordance with CAPF 160-2, cadets will bring any prescription, non-prescription medications, herbals, vitamins, or supplements to AMMA only in the original containers in which the medication was dispensed or packaged. Prescription containers must contain the name of the prescribing physician, the name and telephone number of the dispensing pharmacy (if applicable), the name of the recipient of the prescription, and any other applicable dosing instructions. All other non-prescription medications, herbals, vitamins and supplements must also contain dosing instructions and be labeled with the cadet’s name. Any and all prescription medication that you bring must be relinquished to AMMA staff at check-in. You will be given your medication at the appropriate times specified in your forms.

RULES & REGS

PERSONAL PROPERTY Cadets driving privately owned vehicles (POVs) to the Academy will turn in their keys at sign-in (after unloading). Once keys are turned in, if a cadet has to return to the vehicle for any reason, a senior member must escort him/her. Cadets also will not be allowed to drive at any time during the Academy. This rule applies to any and all vehicles, whatsoever. In addition, any items brought to AMMA that are not on the packing list will be collected during arrival inspections and returned to the attendee at the end of the activity. It is the attendee’s responsibility to advise AMMA staff upon departure that items have been collected and need to be returned. The Academy is not responsible for returning or replacing left-behind, lost or forgotten property of attendees. If there are items to be returned, they will be taken to a USPS, FedEx, UPS or similar shipping facility that can ship them at the attendee’s cost with a tracking number. The AMMA attendee will be contacted, and required to prepay all shipping costs. The Academy will not absorb these charges. In addition, any lost dorm keys ($50.00) or Cessna ID cards ($25.00) will be charged to the individual cadet/senior member who lost it.

FORBIDDEN ITEMS Controlled substances and flammables are strictly forbidden at all CAP activities. Any and all participants caught using controlled substances will be promptly expelled from AMMA and sent home.

RULES OF THE MESS 1. 2. 3. 4.

All cadets will enter and exit the ICC cafeteria in a single-file line. Cadet staff will go through the serving line with cadet attendees. Senior staff will go through last. All cadets will stand at rest while waiting in line; no milling about. There shall be polite conversation among cadets and the serving staff while in line, and all cafeteria staff will be addressed as Ma’am or Sir. 5. Cadets are allowed to take whatever food they desire, but they will consume what they take. 6. All cadets must take two drinks, one of which must be water. No cadets will take carbonated beverages from the machine. 7. Seating arrangements in the cafeteria will be told to the Academy verbally, by a member of the AMMA staff. Changes will only be made as needed. 8. After getting food & drink, cadets will go to their table as directed. 9. Polite conversation at meals is encouraged. 10. Cadets are to sit up at the table. Absolutely no heads will be on the table. 11. No cadets will take soft serve ice cream from the machine without permission of the AMMA staff. 12. When all cadets at a table have finished eating, they will clean up their area and return their trays as a group. 13. After returning trays, cadets will return to the table and wait to be dismissed by AMMA staff.

TRAVEL DURING AMMA Cadets will only be transported in corporate (CAP) vehicles, and cadets may only leave the ICC campus with the supervision of CAP senior members (CPPT requirements apply at all times). In addition, senior members will NOT be allowed to leave ICC/AMMA without the permission of the Academy Director. When preparing to move from the dorms to any other activity such as a meal, PT, or a van to Cessna, all cadets will gather in the tile floored open area at the end of the dormitory hall near the laundry. Cadets will wait until all twenty attendees are present and accounted for by AMMA staff. The cadet command staff will then lead or command flights to proceed to the next location of choice. When in motion, all flights will move as a recognizable group. There will be no stragglers. Cadets will display proper behavior at all times.

THE FINAL NOTE Attendees are expected to exceed standards at all times. Failure to meet the standards set forth in these Rules will result in a black mark against you. A total of 2 black marks will result in you being dismissed from AMMA without credit and at your expense. For infractions that the Academy Director considers severe, there will be no second black mark and an Honor Board will be held. The Honor Board will be made up of the Academy Director, Commandant of Cadets, and one other senior staff member. In addition, the Academy Director shall include any other staff personnel including cadet command staff that he deems necessary to the function of the Honor Board.
