Anthony  Browne   Anthony  Browne  was  born  in  Sheffield,  England.  Storytelling  came   naturally  to  Browne:  when  he  was  young,  his  father  opened  a  pub,   and  he  spent  his  childhood  entertaining  patrons  with  his  stories  of  a   man  called  “Big  Dumb  Tackle”.  His  childhood  was  spent  much  like  any   other  English  boy:  filled  with  playing  sports  and  drawing  with  his  older   brother.   Browne  studied  graphic  design  at  Leeds  College  of  Art  in  West   Yorkshire,  England.  After  leaving  college,  he  worked  as  a  medical  artist  at  the  Manchester  Royal  Infirmary  for   three  years.  Finding  this  work  rather  repetitive,  he  moved  on  to  designing  greeting  cards,  and  worked  for  the   Gordon  Fraser  Gallery.   In  1976,  Browne  published  his  first  book  called  Through  the  Magic  Mirror,  painting  most  of  the  pictures  before   he  even  wrote  the  story.  His  most  popular  book  exhibits  his  fascination  with  gorillas,  entitled  Gorilla.  Around   this  time,  while  filming  a  segment  for  television  at  his  local  zoo,  he  was  badly  bitten  by  a  gorilla.     Browne  has  published  more  than  thirty  books  and  received  numerous   awards,  among  them  the  Kurt  Maschler  ‘Emil’  Award;  additionally,  he  was   the  first  British  illustrator  since  1956  to  be  awarded  the  Hans  Christian   Andersen  Medal.    In  2009,  Browne  was  appointed  the  sixth  Children’s   Laureate.  This  position  acknowledges  the  distinction  of  exceptional  children’s   writing  that  helps  to  create  the  ‘readers  of  tomorrow’.   Browne’s  books  have  been  translated  into  twenty-‐six  different  languages.  His   illustrations  have  traveled  the  world,  including  such  countries  as  Mexico,   France,  Japan,  and  Taiwan.   *Fun  Fact:  there  are  disguised  bananas  hidden  in  Browne’s  books!   Keep  an  eye  out  for  them  the  next  time  you  are  reading  one!*   Book  Titles   My  Dad
