ICAAC YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARDS Call for Nominations

1989 The Young Investigator Awards were established in 1983 for the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) under the sponsorship of Merck Sharp & Dohme. The awards are made annually to four individuals. The deadline for nominations for awards to be presented at the 1989 ICAAC in Houston, Texas, is 28 April 1989.

Purpose. To recognize and reward young investigators for excellence in research in the broad areas of microbiology and infectious diseases. A monetary reward is provided to support attendance at ICAAC and other endeavors enhancing the educational background of the individual.

Eligibility. Pre- andpostdoctoral students andfellows in microbiology and infectious disease fellows, including those not more than 24 months posttraining, who have performed significant research in North America. Research eligible for evaluation is limited to the study and understanding of microbiology, infectious diseases, or any of the sciences associated with the discovery and application of chemotherapeutic agents. Nominations. Individuals may be nominated by an active member of ASM, and nominations are invited from all qualified fellows. Nominations should include a completed nomination form which provides a biographical sketch of the nominee, a sum-

mary appraisal of his or her research, and a list of his or her most pertinent publications. Nomination forms can be obtained from ASM Headquarters (see below). Supporting letters from appropriate individuals in the field, if possible from more than one institution, are desirable.

Award process. Awardees will be selected by the award committee on the basis of research potential and quality. The committee will notify the secretary of ASM when the awardees have been selected. Award. Each young investigator selected will receive a monetary award and a plaque or scroll. Four awards will be made each year. The number of awards will be reviewed annually by the committee. Awards will be presented by the chairman of the ICAAC Committee at the annual ICAAC meeting. Awardees and their mentors will be honored at a private dinner hosted by the sponsor, Merck, Sharp & Dohme, and their names will be published in "ASM News."

Submit four copies of the completed nomination form and four copies of supporting letters by 28 April 1989 to Helen L. Bishop, Director, Education and Professional Recognition, American Society for Mcrobiology, 1913 I St. NW, Washington, DC 20006. Awardees will be notified by 7 July 1989.
