WHAT:

Construction judging – Garments are due in the 4-H Office, (511 Roussell Street, Houma) no later than Friday, April 20, 2012 by 4:00 p.m. Ready to Wear paper work is also due April 20, 2012. Appearance, Style Show and Awards Presentation – Behind closed curtains, contestants will model their garments for an appearance score which will be added to their construction score or Ready to Wear score. The Style Show will take place during Achievement Day activities. Contestants must participate in the Style Show. Additional information will be available to those that register.

The total score (construction and appearance) or (Ready to Wear Form and appearance) will determine the placing. All 4-H’ers will receive a ribbon. RULES 1. Each contestant may enter one garment. The contestant must do all the sewing/construction on the garment herself/himself. Any store bought garment will be disqualified (exceptionReady to Wear Category). 2. Garments will be judged on construction as well as appearance for the total score. 3. Fabric of outer garment may be of any fabric type. Interfacing, lining and trim should be of compatible fabric. 4. Each contestant must completely fill out the personal data sheet and turn it in with their garment by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2012. Check the end of the fabric bolt for information on how to care for your fabric. You will need this information to fill out your data sheet. 5. Make sure garment meets the division requirements and that the contestant is in the correct category. 6. You must contact the 4-H Office by April 20, 2012, to register to participate. If you have any questions, call the 4-H Office at (985) 873-6495.

CATEGORIES Beginners (any grade)– Suggestions: drawstring apron, cobbler’s apron, any other apron, shorts and t-shirt top or jiffy skirt and t-shirt top. (When buying a pattern, look for “Easy to Sew”, “Jiffy”, “Fast & Easy”, or “Learn to Sew”.) Beginners may also enter the Ready-to-Wear contest. Intermediate (any grade) – Any complete outfit – school dress, pants outfit or special occasion or Ready-to-Wear. Ready to Wear – includes any outfit for any occasion that was selected for $100 or less. Participants will model outfit with accessories. (Do not turn in garment.)Complete and return ready to wear form by April 20, 2012.

Advanced – MUST BE 13 YEARS OF AGE BY JANUARY 1, 2012 Casual wear – includes outfit (dress, skirt, shorts or pants, jumpsuit and skirt or blouse, etc. Category does not include floor length skirts or very dressy outfits. Special occasion wear – must be suitable for special occasion (prom, church, wedding, interview outfit or dinner date/dance). Ready to Wear – includes any outfit for any occasion that was selected for $100 or less. Participants will model outfit with accessories. (Do not turn in garment.) Complete and return ready to wear form by April 20, 2012. Creative choice – must be 14 years or older by January 1, 2012. Construct a complete outfit that includes a minimum of 5 design/construction features listed below. 1. Tailored outfit with bound buttonholes and/or tailored collar. 2. Collar or other neckline treatment – other than plain, faced edge. 3. Creative stitchery – appliqué, patchwork, embroidery, quilting, beading, etc. 4. Design that must be matched – plaid, print, stripe. 5. Gathers, ruffles, flounces, pleats or tucks. 6. Handmade accessory. 7. Lining. 8. Special seam – flat felled, French, lingerie, etc. (any except finishing edge of a plain seam). 9. Trim or decorate – top stitching, braid, insertion, trim, etc. 10. Use of unusual fabric – pile, napped, sheer, lace, lightweight knit, etc. 11. Worked on two or more fabrics of different weights or textures (not including underlining, interfacing, lining). 12. Color blocking use in design. 13. Unusual or self-created design. 14. Two or more coordinated garment pieces for mix and match. 15. Garment details of usual size or shape (ex., curved French cuffs). Tips 1. Remember when modeling -be confident and SMILE! 2. Don’t forget to accessorize your garment. If you plan on using a certain accessory, bring it with you to the Fashion Revue. (accessory examples – hat, purse, flower, backpack, balloon, cooking utensil, etc.)
