Introduction   Picture books can be an amazing way for students to learn about, and do art in its various forms. They will be inspired to create their own works of art from the great art they can find in the pictures. But watch out: These books are so good to read, the students may have trouble focusing only on the pictures! Why use picture books, in general, across the grades? I would suggest there are numerous reasons, some of which we have outlined below: • In general, the illustrations and the text work together in harmony, to tell a story that is more than the sum of either the picture or the text alone. There is often a playful irony created between the two forms of communication, creating a multilayered story that younger readers may not discover. • Many famous artists, such as Eric Carl or William Steig decided to shift to the picture book as a showcase for their considerable artistic talents. Thus the picture book brings the world of art into the lives of many people that may never have visited an art gallery. We are better people for this opportunity.

• Picture books are great for people who may not have yet discovered the depth of experiences to be found in reading. These books not only “tell” us a story, but they also “show” us a story. • Picture books are international in scope, opening the world to those who experience them. For example, most of us may never get to India, but we can certainly experience the sights, sounds, smells, and atmosphere of that country, through the picture book format. • Many famous artists were inspired to start their artistic explorations through the myriad of picture books they enjoyed in the company of family and friends, when they were just old enough climb up into someone’s lap for a communal read. Join us then, in exploring some the best best art, the best words, and the best picture books, as we enjoy them together, in the following art activities and picture book lists. • If you want more information of the efficacy of using picture books, try our web pages, below: • Advantages of Using Children's Literature Across the Curriculum • Picture Books For Older Readers This handout promotes some of the best examples of the various types of art students may try out in class, all found in picture books. The books are highlighted under each form of art, the art form is defined, and links to lesson plans are included. There is also a section that can help your students learn about each art form including teaching titles, as they browse the books. If your students produce some examples that we could add to this handout, that would be even better. If this interests you as a teacher, you can contact us at: [email protected]. The artwork can also be projected on the classroom screen, either through the Library Catalogue’s links to the book cover’s large images, or, if there is an electronic version of the book noted below (“UofL CurrLab Electronic Resource”), you can view the whole book. Simply search in the University of Lethbridge Library catalogue and click on the “Read online” link. Further instructions for finding these titles are outlined in the lists, as needed (e.g Bookflix titles). Images for the booklists are provided by Syndetics™, a Bowker service, taken from the University of Lethbridge Library’s enhanced public access catalogue, posted as permitted by the fair dealing clause of the Canadian Copyright Act, for the purposes of research, review, and education. For larger images on any of the titles, go to the Library catalogue, and type in the title of the book. The summaries are also taken from the same location. If the summary takes up much more space than the illustration allows, only the first part of the summary is displayed. For the whole summary, go to the Library catalogue, and type in the book title. Most of the titles were suggested in the Picturing Books Database, available to the University of Lethbridge Faulty of Education undergraduate students, as part of our Digital Resource (Back to top)

Subscriptions. It is a database dedicated to the art of the picture book. It combines "data from dozens of print sources, thousands of picture books, and countless publisher, author, and illustrator websites." Its purpose is to ”connect the user with the right picture book.” It is an excellent source when trying to discover the type of art in a picture book, or to find picture book titles of the same specific genre or artistic style. After each summary, below, details of the types of tools used to create the artwork are listed, taken from this database, especially if more than one form of art is used in the illustrations References: Kiefer, Barbara Z. & Tyson, Cynthia A. Questions  To  Ask  When  Browsing  the  Art  in  Picture  Books   • • • • • • • • •

How do you think the illustrator made the pictures? What types of tools would they have used for each part of the picture? Do you think the artist used more than one art tool? Follow the lines. Describe them. What shapes or objects do you see? What types of colors did they use, and where do you think they came from? Texture: If you could touch the original art work, what types of things might you feel? Do the images or colors create any types of feelings or emotions in you? Why? Does the art remind you of something? What?

On the next page, a simple graphic organizer is provided for students to use when asking and answering these questions.

Art: Grades 1-6 (Taken from the Elementary Art Program of Studies, p. C1):  REFLECTION--responses to visual forms in nature, designed objects and artworks.  It includes analyzing structures in nature, assessing designed objects, and appreciating art. COMPOSITION--organization of images and their qualities in the creation of unified statements.  In Composition, the image-making skills developed in Depiction are employed to create integrated artworks. EXPRESSION--use of art materials as a vehicle or medium for saying something in a meaningful way.  In Expression, the focus is on purpose, theme and subject matter, as well as on media and techniques.  English Language Arts:  According  to Alberta Education's Program of Studies, "students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent" to achieve 5 general outcomes: explore thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences, comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print and other media texts, manage ideas and information, enhance the clarity and artistry of communication, and  respect, support and collaborate with others.

Once a mouse: A fable cut in wood from ancient India

"No one shall tell me that I was once a mouse!" roars the tiger. But an old hermit, mighty at magic, does tell him; for it was he who first changed the tiger from a wretched little mouse to a stout cat, to a big dog, and finally, to his proud and royal self. Youngest readers will take special delight in seeing these changes take place in Marcia Brown's dramatic picturing of the tiger's fall from grace. Older boys and girls will read more meaning into the text.... (Woodcuts)

Broken Feather

Broken Feather's homeland is a wonderful place. It's full of natural beauty, proud tribesmen, and fish just waiting to be caught. But then white men appear. At first they just pass through, but when they begin to clear land and build houses, even Broken Feather can tell trouble is brewing. It culminates in a battle the tribe loses, but even though they are forced onto a reservation, Broken Feather's pride in his heritage remains strong. Inspired by the history of the Nez Percé tribe, Verla Kay's sensitive treatment of this difficult period is perfectly complemented by Stephen Alcorn's dramatic, stylized artwork. Both contributors have been highly praised. (Oils, relief print)

Snowflake Bentley

From the time he was a small boy, Wilson Bentley saw snowflakes as small miracles. And he determined that one day his camera would capture for others the wonder of the tiny crystal. His story is gracefully told and brought to life in lovely woodcuts....(Woodcuts, watercolors)

Where the sidewalk ends

"If you are a dreamer, come in, If you are a dreamer, A wisher, a liar, A hope-er, a pray-er, A magic bean buyer ... " Come in ... for where the sidewalk ends, Shel Silverstein' s world begins. You' ll meet a boy who turns into a TV set, and a girl who eats a whale. The Unicorn and the Bloath live there, and so does Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who will not take the garbage out. It is a place where you wash your shadow and plant diamond gardens, a place where shoes fly, sisters are auctioned off, and crocodiles go to the dentist. Shel Silverstein' s masterful collection of poems and drawings is at once outrageously funny and profound. (Pen and Ink)

Chester

Chester is more than a picture book. It is a story told, and retold, by dueling author-illustrators. Melanie Watt starts out with the story of a mouse in a house. Then Melanie's cat, Chester, sends the mouse packing and proceeds to cover the pages with rewrites from his red marker, and the gloves are off. Melanie and her mouse won't take Chester's antics lying down. And Chester is obviously a creative powerhouse with confidence to spare. Where will this war of the picture-book makers lead?... My many colored days

Here is a wonderful way for parents to talk with children about their feelings. With Johnson and Fancher's atmospheric, large-scale paintings bursting off the pages, Dr. Seuss's vision is brought to life. This rare and beautiful book is bound to appeal to both the innocent young and the most sophisticated seniors.... (Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher use a combination of oils, acrylics, collage, and inks on either paper, canvas or wood. It varies from book to book. This is a great book to introduce the idea that colours, and art in general, evoke emotional responses in us. You and me: poems of friendship

From Booklist. Ages 4-8. There are 19 enjoyable poems in this anthology, and Mavor has illustrated them with her extraordinary 3-D fabric relief technique that makes use of embroidery, collage, and applique. The problem is that the intricate, brightly colored illustrations overwhelm the words. Children will be so busy poring over the astonishing depth and detail of the pictures, with their cuddly dolls and animals, busy sidewalks, and country scenes, that it will be hard to listen to the imagery and rhythms of the poetry. Mr. Gauguin’s heart

Based on a true story, Mr. Gauguin's Heart is about the birth of imagination and the solace of art. Young Paul Gauguin sailed from Denmark to Peru with his family: his mother, his father, his sister, Marie, and his odd-looking, imaginary orange dog. At first being on the boat was fun; he loved to walk his dog on the ship's bridge. Then one day, Paul found his mother in tears; his father had died... Then an old man took him by the hand and in a few brush strokes, he had stirred a passion that lay just beneath the boy's surface. He had shown Paul how to paint... one that would pave the way to many masterpieces... (Mixed media)

Thomas, Patricia/ Craig Orback

Nature’s Paintbox: A seasonal gallery of art and verse

How would you capture winter's crispness, spring's softness, summer's freshness, and autumn's richness? In this inspiring title, poet Patricia Thomas imagines each season rendered in a different art medium. Pen and ink, with spots of color, capture winter's mood, while pastel chalks make spring flowers bloom into life. The see-through hues of watercolors celebrate summer's warmth, while vibrant oils perfectly paint fall's majestic scenes.... (As well as capturing the seasons, it is a series of art lessons in a book.)
