Dear Mt Piatt, It gives me great sadness to report that my father; Arthur Ryerson Hyde Clarke "Y 51s Died on October 19, 2011.1 have had a very hard time dealing with his loss. He was my best friend, collaborator, teacher, father, and a bridge to the past of which he was the last to know it's history.
Arthur Ryerson Hyde Clarke, 85, died peacefully with his children at his side on October 19, 2011 in Greenwich Connecticut. He was born in Cooperstown, NY on July 5,1926 the youngest of the seven children of George Hyde Clarke and Emily Borie Ryerson of Hyde Hall. He was educated in the local area and in France and North Carolina before attending the Hoosac School and graduating from St. Paul's School in 1944. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. armed forces and served in the Office of Strategic Services in Germany in World War II until his discharge in early 1947. After the war he studied at Yale University from where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1951. He worked in Washington and in Chicago where he met his wife, Rosanna Schimenz. He earned a Master's degree in History from Loyola University in Chicago whereupon he embarked on a career as an educator, first as a professor of European History at the Albert Schweitzer College in Switzerland and later teaching French at the Cooperstown Central School and American History in New Rochelle, NY. With his wife he was active in managing the Otsego Golf Club in Springfield Center, NY for many years, becoming it's President and continuing his involvement as Treasurer until the present. (Arthur Clarke was a man of great intellect and learning with a vast and deep knowledge of history that was impressive). He served on the boards of the Head of the Lake Corporation, The Cook Foundation and the Friends of Hyde Hall. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, A. R. Hyde Clarke, Jr. and Margaret McKinley Clarke of Connecticut, by his daughter and son-in-law Sophie Clarke and Jeffrey Baron Isaac of Italy and by three grandchildren.
