Notes from the RE’s Desk

We will need help with hospitality and setup at this event as well, so if you are available, regardless of rather or not you are running, please let Mark Walker ([email protected]) know. We continue on with at the end of August and the first week of September with one of SCCA’s premier motorsports events - Solo Nationals. We need lots of help with Solo Nationals, and none of the assignments are particularly difficult. Watch the forums and email blasts for information regarding where we need volunteers for the event. Our Championship Season concludes on September 14th and 15th with the MiDiv RallyCross Championship/National Challenge event at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood. This event will be a preview of some bigger things that may be coming next year for Nebraska Region and this great venue.

Matthew Cox Coming into the Finish. Its already that time of year. Summer is almost over, and the racing season is winding down. That can only mean one thing of course: Championship Season is here! Once Again, Nebraska Region is right smack dab in the middle of the MiDiv and SCCA National Championship Events. The next 50 days are extremely busy in our region with Championship events. Why am I telling you this? Well, to put it frankly, our work over the next 50 days has the possibility of funding our programs for the next 365 days. We need any help that we can get. Championship Season starts off with the M i D i v S o l o Championship Event on August 17 and 18 at Lincoln Air Park. If you want to attend this N E B R A S K A R E G I O N - E X H A U S T NO T E S

It’s never to early to look ahead. I need everyone’s help on a couple of issues: C l u b R a c i n g : 2014 will be different. Our club racing program cannot continue on the path its currently on for much longer. We need to come up with a successful formula to hold races at our tracks that are fun and exciting to participate in, while still being financially viable. MiDiv has not yet (as I am writing this) started scheduling calls for 2014. If you have any input you would like passed onto the scheduling committee or exec committee please let me know. S o l o : It appears that the new “Street” class rules will be passed onto the board of directors for approval. This continued pg.3 PA G E 1

RE Column continued . . . . . puts Nebraska Region at somewhat of a disadvantage. With an average of around 80-90 entrants per solo, and with up to a possible 95 National Classes (Open + Ladies), we need to come up with a plan to keep our events competitive for our drivers. Solo stock drivers, please let us know what your plans are for the 2014 year pending the rule changes, and also let us know if there are any suggestions to keep our events competitive.

Important Dates: August 27 - Tuesday Rescheduled August Board Meeting October 8 - Tuesday General Membership Meeting/Board Nominations. Mark Walker, Chuck Garcia and Matthew Cox terms are up. October 30 - Wednesday Rescheduled October Board Meeting

Congratulations to April, Tim & big brother, Dylan on the arrival of Aria Rose Walter on July 1, 2013

your most precious commodities…Time. It is sometimes hard to come by and it is definitely something that cannot be refunded but your time volunteering for our competition is valued. How can you put a value on something that is priceless? Simply, we cannot. So today, on behalf the of the Formula SAE Lincoln & Electric programs, I would like to take a little “time out” to T h a n k Y o u for the amazing “Time In” that you gave! We have so many volunteers to thank…197 of you to be exact, so you can understand if we cannot call you out one-by-one. But please know that whether you were a judge, course worker, technical inspector or one of our gate staff, all of your jobs were equally important to us as our competition could not run without you. To my event captains who raised their hands to take the lead onsite, to those volunteers who recruited friends and family, to those volunteers who not only reported to their assigned roles but also pitched in where needed when we fell short-handed; going above and beyond what you signed up for…Thank you!! Also very special thanks to the SCCA Foundation who hosted a lovely reception for all the volunteers at Speedway Motors Museum. Without them the reception would not have been possible. Since the event has taken place, I have been receiving emails from volunteers and students alike with great feedback and compliments. The event in my eyes was once again a HUGE success; in large part to the volunteers and to the tent guy who provided stronger tents…lol. The enthusiasm is already carrying over to the 2014 Formula SAE Lincoln and Electric competition, which promises to be well attended by many high-caliber engineering students from across the globe. Volunteer involvement with the Formula SAE Competitions is an integral part of its future. We enjoy working with you and hope to continue growth in our volunteer numbers and relationships. We hope you all plan to attend the 2014 FSAE Lincoln / Electric competitions. Mark your calendars now for June 18 - 21, 2014!

Thank You from SAE International Dear Ladies & Gentlemen, There is no “I” in team, but there is “U” in volunteer. As a volunteer, you bring so much to our Formula SAE competitions. Your skills, advice, experience, leadership, inspiration, etc., are all admirable qualities that you share with our program. Those items you bring with you, but what you gave Formula SAE is your Time. In today’s world, you were able to donate to us one of N E B R A S K A R E G I O N - E X H A U S T NO T E S

For event captains, I will be working on organizing wrapup meetings starting next week. If anyone has feedback you would like to supply please feel free to forward your comments to me or your event captain. Again, many thanks to all! Paul Brown Memorial Grand Prix On be behalf of Paul Brown’s family, we want to thank all of you for the participation of the Memorial Grand Prix. What a wonderful idea to honor him and the drive around was very heart warming. I know many of you did not know Paul, but ask anyone about him and they will tell you he was a great guy, always willing to lend a helping hand or even a part if needed. He was so much fun! We all miss him in our own way. Thank you so much! Sylvia Musil (Paul’s Mom)

Classic cars partaking in a game called Auto Pushball. The objective is similar to soccer. There are 3 cars on each side with goals lining each end of a 90 yard field. Now try navigating that 6 foot ball through a goal, all while dodging five other drivers and piloting a Model A. So this is where the fun begins...

5) What ban’s claim to fame is the Zamboni song? a. Gear Daddies

As dusk fell on the city of Malvern Iowa, hundreds gathered to watch this long time tradition come to life.

High Plains Race in Colorado

D o n : How did Auto Pushball get started in Malvern? In the early ’50s, (when I was 6 or 7 years old) I can remember seeing my dad driving up the farmhouse lane in his new, bright yellow Auto Pushball car. Dad’s brother, my Uncle Louis Knop, had the brain storm to take these Model A Fords, cut the bodies off and put roll cages around them. They used wooden wagon wheel rims for the roll bars over the top of the cars. Dad’s four brothers along with many of their friends were all involved with building the 8 cars. I can’t imagine the hours this must have taken and the bottles of beer these German descendants must have consumed! Number “0”, the car that I drive, was built a few years after the others. It was made from a car that was already narrowed and shortened several inches to fit corn rows. It was originally used to pack corn after planting on the flat bottom ground next to the Missouri river. I remember watching them build it in a welding shop in Malvern. After the cars were all built and the Auto Pushball game was established with the 6' diameter balls, the fence to keep the ball in the playing field (which is about the same size as a football field) and the goals on each end of the field, they went traveling. During the 1950s, they contracted to play at county fairs and other events in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska.

comments by Patc Henry, photo by Monica Shaw Natha Waldbaum WON her Sunday race at HPR and was written up in the SCCA media release.

“Michael Pettiford went for the double in group five with his Touring 2 Corvette, but was passed on the final lap by Natha Waldbaum’s No. 51 Hutter Performance/ Vettesport Chevrolet Corvette.” “Waldbaum and Pettiford’s Touring 2 battle stole the show in Group 5 . . . “

Sunday was much better for Tex Arnold. He did great passing lots of cars and taking first place. Bob Herman was there, too. Couldn’t believe all the volunteer workers! A great weekend of racing. Had 96 cars.

OFF TRACK by Julie Heaton & photos What do you get when you take 2 Nebraska Region members, a fleet of Model A’s and a 6 foot nylon covered ball? Answer? One heck of a good time! Fourth of July weekend found Don Knop and his daughter Kellie behind the wheel of these

Kellie e: Is there a rule about crashing into one another and is it hard to keep from doing so? There is no rule about crashing in each other but generally speaking, hit the ball one time and turn left. Always know where all the other 5 cars are positioned in the field. When you get the yellow or red flag to be the first to hit the ball, you should weave back and forth slightly as you are headed to the ball to make certain the other team didn’t miss read the flag and are also coming to the ball. By doing this you can see past the ball and be assured no one else is coming towards the ball. So, the basic rule is DON’T CRASH because Don would be the one putting in hours to repair damage!

Now overturning a car at any SCCA event is never a good thing. But what about flipping a Model A 360 degrees during an Auto Pushball game? The crowd went wild when Don not only rolled his Model A onto its back, but had enough momentum to put it back on all four wheels again. As night fell, the cheers only continued for the Knop family. Kellie, with only last year’s competition under her belt, scored an impressive goal to take a 3-0 win for her team. Don n: Was it difficult to roll the Model A and was there a strategy involved in doing so? As I mentioned earlier, the wheel base on “0” is narrower than a normal car. Therefore, “0” rolls more easily than the other pushball cars. Never the less, it is crucial to run the correct speed, not too fast and not too slow, and turn the car sharp enough to get it to roll. I have to make certain no other cars are close and that I have enough room not to roll into the fence or to hit the goal barrels. In my early days of driving “0”, it was difficult to roll the car over without getting myself hurt or hurting the car. It seemed like every time the car rolled, something broke. Each time something broke, I took measures to keep that part from breaking again. Eventually, I have it pretty much figured out. Never the less, when you abuse an 80 year old car like that, something is bound to break! N E B R A S K A RE G I O N - E X H A U S T NO T E S

Kellie e: What was the most exciting part of the game? The most exciting part of the game is making a goal. Also, keeping the car from crashing into the other five cars on the field who are all running circles around the ball. I felt like I needed to hit it and get out of the way so I don’t get hit by another driver. I wanted to get the car to roll over but I still don’t have the technique down as this was only my second time driving the car. Maybe next time. So, if you enjoy good food, great entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display, then add this Fourth of July Celebration to your calendar for next year. As for Don and Kellie, you can catch them much sooner navigating their other Ford (2007 Mustang Shelby GT) at an autocross near you.
