Fortyfour-year-old Paz was picked up after “an extensive investigation,” and it turns out his house was like an internet shopping site warehouse, with jewelry and other items in addition to motorcycle gear.

just gone. No trace, no “we removed the guidelines because…” Nothing. Imagine our panic. The title of this was almost OMG! WTF HAPPENED TO THE LANE SPLITTING GUIDELINES?! Splitting lanes is one of the many reasons California is the greatest motorcycle state in the union. California without lane splitting is, well… the terrorists may as well have won.

We know that lane splitting is unlikely to be a non-issue in California any time soon. We all breathed a sigh of relief when SB 350 died, but here we are just a few months later, faced with a new challenge to lane splitting. Remember, smart, safe lane splitting gives politicians one less reason to pay attention to crybaby constituents who whine about those death wish bikers coming out of nowhere and cutting in line. Here’s where we normally put a link so you can go to The Internets and educate yourself further. Since the guidelines are gone, we’ll just point out that Ken Mandler can be reached at www.statejobworkshops.com.

HONDA’S SMART (AND KINDA SEXY!) NEW STARTER BIKE CityBike loves little bikes. (Ask us about the downright unfair beatings a certain Honda Grom has received at our hands sometime.) So we like the recent resurgence of small, cool bikes—especially at small prices—and we really like the one-two By Gabe Ets-Hokin

Twenty Years with CityBike “It’s About Motorcycles! It’s Free! Take One!” said the cheery red-and-white sticker on the battered newsrack. Peering through the cloudy Plexiglas, I could dimly see the tabloid-sized newspaper—I think it was the issue with the Hawk on the cover, June ‘92. Free? I was actually considering buying a Hawk from the honey-tongued Ray Nowakowski himself, as he still had one or two leftover 91’s in the warehouse, so what did I have to lose except a few minutes of reading time?

An hour later, I had finished every word of the rag, cover-to-cover. I don’t remember much, but there was a Hawk jumping over the crest of Potrero Hill, sensible advice about how to make the bike go fast and handle better, and a slew of other articles, photos and letters that didn’t just interest me, but reinforced my vague notion that the San Francisco Bay Area was the best place to own a motorcycle, with access to the best roads, the best dealers and endless like-minded riders who were up for any adventure, any time. Friends I just hadn’t met yet. For many years I seldom missed an issue, and its honest, profane and often howlingly funny content made me think that maybe I could write about motorcycles for a living. That’s when Old Man Halton strolled into the DucatiTriumph-Yamaha dealer where I found myself working for the summer. “You should give me a monthly column,” I said. “Why the fuck not?” said Halton, laughing his barking laugh, and 10 years later here I am. Writing for CityBike—and helping keep it alive—has been an incredible honor, a dream come true. I’ve written many thousands of words for my favorite Photo: Bob Stokstad publication, and though I’ll never say it’s the best stuff in there, it’s pretty good, and it seems to make our readers happy—even if many of them are live birds or dead fish. But it’s time for me to move on. Like any other organism, CityBike has to keep changing and moving to grow and be healthy, so I’m going to move over and let somebody else drive the bus. That somebody is Surj Gish. Surj has all the bona fides to step up as Editor-in-Chief of the magazine: he’s a fine writer and shit-disturber, as evidenced by both his work on his Lanesplittingislegal.com blog as well as the sleuthing he’s done as Political Affairs Editor in this publication over the last year. He has a background in both the mechanical (he worked at the family business in Sacramento, an automotive machine shop) and the digital (he’s a digital media consultant, with many impressive brandscalps tucked into his breechclout). He rides well—maybe he won’t win an AFM championship, but he’s safe and knowledgeable and even at 41 years old still wants to learn everything there is to know about our sport. But most importantly, Surj gets us. He’s as enchanted with CityBike as I was 20 years ago, loves that it’s available in such a relatively limited area and speaks to a selfselected population that shares his interests and worldview. I know he’ll do right by us—so do right by him and read CityBike, support its advertisers and let him know you’re out there—and you appreciate his efforts. Me, I’ll stay involved, as our pulpy, 28-page friend is as much a part of my motoidentity as my motorcycle itself. It’s still an honor to be needed here and to think that occasionally a new reader sees that “It’s Free! It’s About Motorcycles! Take One!” sticker and feels that kinship with Bay Area riders because of what I wrote. See you at the Safety Meeting,

started to think about what Skully calls their “advanced situational awareness system.” Skully says their goal is to “show navigation and blind spot data, allowing you to stay focused on the most important part of your ride – the road.” Unlike the glut of information in Iron Man’s display, Skully is focused primarily on a near-180° view behind the motorcycle and turn-by-turn directions. Both features aim to prevent the rider from taking attention away from the road ahead. I read online of concerns from some that the display would distract and endanger the rider. I had the opposite feeling. Looking at the display was akin to looking

THE ELECTRIC SLIDE, ALLAMERICAN EDITION When you hear “Harley-Davidson,” what do you think of? Things like ape hangers, floorboards, loud pipes (saving lives, man!) and aging, err… classic technology probably come to mind. But the boys (and girls, we presume) behind the Bar and Shield have been changing things up lately. Water cooling, small cruisers, and now an electric bike? Yep, we’re talking about Harley-Davidson’s recently revealed Project Livewire, which according to a video targeted at H-D investors, builds on the “reinvention success” of the recent Street models and Project Rushmore.

This helmet doesn’t feel like vaporware!

punch Honda just delivered by quickly following the official announcement of the CRB300R with the CB300F. On paper, it’s an even better beginner bike than the sporty-esque CBR. The same easily manageable power, but 9 pounds lighter, $400 cheaper, with a slightly more upright riding position, and less bodywork to get instantly destroyed when the jittery hands of a nervous noob just let go at a stop. And it gets 71 MPG!

Even so, we’re eager to get our hands on one of these, so keep your eyes peeled for our review. American Honda, if you’re reading this, we promise to be nicer to the li’l red F than we’ve been to our Grom!

PREVIEW: SKULLY AR-1 AUGMENTED REALITY HELMET CityBike reader Peter Radsliff was lucky enough to get on the beta testing list for the Skully AR-1. Here’s the story of his first hands-on experience with the helmet—stay tuned for more!

I hit the lotto. Skully Helmets invited me to be one of their first beta testers out of over 40,000 applicants. During a “first look” session with their amazing AR-1 Augmented Reality Motorcycle Helmet I was struck with how normal it looked. It slipped over my big noggin with ease and didn’t put pressure on my forehead like some helmets. The padding was luxurious and the fit was excellent—so far, so good. The integrated heads-up display sat to the side of my right eye, low enough to see over. The display was bright with deep saturated colors. Even small navigation text was crisp and easy to read without needing glasses. Once I got past the Tony Stark feeling, I

more suitable for real-world riding, at least in urban areas. But if The Motor Company wants those riders to lay down their cash, they’re going to have to up the specs. Zero’s SR doubles the LiveWire’s 52 ft-lb of torque, although horsepower comes in a few ponies behind the E-Rod’s 74, at 67 hp. The SR handily wins the race to 60 MPH at 3.3 seconds, compared to the H-D’s 4 second time. The SR will also do the ton, and can also break 100 miles of range if ridden with some restraint. But that’s not really a fair comparison— this is a pre-production bike, designed to see if people are willing to give HarleyDavidson a shot at something besides “heritage.” To our eyes, it looks like a good start.

You know what else it gets? Lustful looks from certain members of the CityBike crew. Never mind the spindly forks—they’re almost forgivable given the F’s good looks. If we squint real hard, it almost starts to look like a nicely-restored, red CB-1—and that’s a good thing! One bummer—there’s no ABS. This thing is cheaper than an expired breakfast burrito, so it’s not surprising, but we wish ABS were at least optional equipment, given the noob-friendly nature of this machine. The CBR300R gets it—why not treat the naked bike crowd to the same good stuff?

Here’s the E-Rod prototype. Send us a check for that awesome name, H-D.

Get more information about the Project LiveWire Experience Tour at project.harley-davidson.com. Also, be sure to keep turning pages to see what this month’s Question Man has to say about Project LiveWire. at your gauges without needing to tip your head downwards. I see this “headsup” posture as the first aspect of Skully’s augmented reality: you no longer need to take your eyes away from the road. The experience is enhanced when you realize you can see through the display. Putting my hand behind the image, I could see my fingers and my brain registered there was no interruption in my vision. It was then I realized the display felt immersive and not distracting. When I ride, I constantly check my mirrors to see who is around me or is coming up on me too fast. This leads me to what I perceive is the second aspect of Skully’s augmented reality: the rider has complete situational awareness at all times. This may seem to be the same as not needing to take your eyes off the road, but it’s not. It’s the mental picture a rider has at any particular moment of what is happening around their bike and how it affects their safety. I’ll know better after road testing, but from what I perceived standing on the sidewalk, the AR-1 would allow me to have constant situational awareness. Another great feature is that the display works just as well with the visor up or down, and the visor is electrochromic with a push of a button making it either dark or clear. Stay tuned for more as Peter gets to take an AR-1 out on the streets. To see more photos and a comprehensive write-up, check out his blog: www. MeAndMyConnie.com.

H-D will be trucking a fleet of their notavailable-for purchase prototypes around the US for the Project LiveWire Experience tour, in order to gather feedback on the bike. They’ll even have a “Kickstart” environment for non-riders to try out the bike, presumably on a rolling road of some sort. Feedback on the bike will be incorporated into the design if (when?) it goes into production.

AMA FLAT TRACK IN CALISTOGA The Santa Rosa Mile has been cancelled, but hotshoe fans, don’t despair—AMA Pro Flat Track will be bringing its circus just 20 minutes away, to the historic halfmile Calistoga Speedway on Saturday, September 27. The event will be promoted by a group of enthusiastic flat-track fans and supporters, including Steve De Lorenzi of SDI

Here’s what we think. The H-D faithful will likely scrunch up their noses in Robert “Bugs” Pearson confusion and leads through the slide. proceed to largely ignore LiveWire— maybe the V-Rod crew will be into it, but the riding position and overall look of the bike will probably limit interest. However, we bet non-H-D riders to flood H-D dealerships to check out the LiveWire Experience; after all, the bike looks bad ass and many riders are starting to get genuinely interested in electric motorcycles as the technology gets

...AND SACTO IS BACK TOO That’s right, the Sacramento Mile event is back in action as well, and it’s almost here. We reported the event was cancelled, but it’s back, and there are some exciting reasons to check it out this year. Ever wonder who’s faster, Jay Springsteen or Chris Carr? Well, find out July 26th when the two racing legends battle it out on current-year XR750 racebikes in a 5-lap expo race. Okay, maybe “battle” is hyperbolic—AMA media rep Larry Lawrence told us they would really be out there just to have fun, but it should still be very entertaining. If you want to see some really intense combat, though, watch for Brian Smith on his Kawasaki, gunning to be the first racer to win Sacramento four years in a row. And watch history get made if both Shayna Texter and Nichole Mees (yes, she’s married to Jered) make the final—the first time two women will be in a Grand National final. Also, look out for two boys from Salinas, Stevie Bonsey and Briar Bauman, both ranked in the top 10. The event is Saturday, July 26th and practice starts at 2:15 pm. Racing goes till after 9:15 pm, under the lights on a hot summer night. You can catch the State Fair in the morning and stay all day for the racing—sounds like a long, hot, sweaty, but very fun day to us. For more info go to sactomile.com or call 844/722-6453.

We’ve spent quite a bit of time combing through a pre-release version of the survey, and there are some very interesting findings in this year’s document Furthermore, now that we’re three years in and about a year and a half from when the CHP released their (now MIA) lane splitting guidelines, we can begin to draw conclusions about the effects of increased awareness and education.

Let’s sum that up in simple terms: more riders are splitting on both freeways and other roadways, and more riders are keeping their speed differential lower—good! Distraction due to cell phone usage is up—shocker! More drivers know splitting is legal, but the percentage of drivers that believe splitting is legal on both freeways and surface streets is still below 50%.

Chart 1 is deceptive. It looks like there’s a huge reduction in the percentage of drivers blocking riders, but this is actually a change in the question. In previous years, the question was “Have you ever tried preventing a motorcycle that was lane-splitting from passing you?” For 2014 (and going forward) the question is “In the past 12 months, have you tried to prevent a motorcycle that was lane-splitting from passing you?” This is a better question, but it results in skewed results when comparing 2014 to previous years.

The Classics are inspired by café racer boots of old. They mention Hailwood and Ago their site and reference the late forties through the sixties as the ‘Golden Age’ of motorcycling. You get the idea—these boots are retro.

TECH TIP: BRAKIN’ CARE OF BUSINESS Since most rides start and stop with using your brakes they tend to be important, but they are probably some of the least-serviced components on a motorcycle. Nothing puzzles me more than a motorcycle that has been immaculately washed and waxed, yet the brake rotors and calipers are covered in layers of dirt and grease.

These boots are beautifully made and I’m guessing they will be as durable as a 1974 CB360. They do have buckles, which are not for everyone, and they do require some shoehorning to get on but once on (and buckled) they fit like the proverbial glove and look smart. Paul Smart.

Rotors and pads accumulate dust, which leads to reduced braking efficiency. It’s easily remedied by spraying some brake cleaner on a rag and then wiping the rotor’s surfaces until no trace of dirt is left. I have also found that dirt build-up on the buttons of floating rotors can cause the discs to feel like they are warped or glazed by keeping the rotor from being able to float freely. Again, brake cleaner will help—spray some in between the carrier and blade at the buttons, then work the rotor side to side like a steering wheel. Cleaning the backing plates of the pads as well as the pistons, internal surfaces of the caliper, pad retaining pins and spring plates the same way can also help reduce issues like dragging pads. If you don’t believe him, lay both bikes’ specification sheets side by side and you’ll note very few changes. The SX is 5 pounds lighter (414 pounds claimed with the 4.5-gallon tank empty), but makes the same claimed 185 horsepower and 101.6 ft-lbs of torque, at the same engine speeds. Gearing is the same, suspension is the same, chassis geometry is the same. The only other difference we could find was lean angle (55 degrees on the RX compared to 48 on the SX), probably because the adjustable footpegs are bolted to a lower position at the factory. Will it be any good? If it’s as fun and easy to ride as the RX (see the story on page 12), then the answer is yes—and it’s a cool $2000 less than the

superbike at $16,995. That makes it very competitive with bikes like the KTM 1290 Superduke (which we can’t get enough of, see the June issue), Ducati Monster 1200, Aprilia Tuono V4R and BMW S1000RR. EBR claimed it would be in dealers in early July.

GASOLINA CLASSIC BOOTS: RETRO STYLE WITH SUBSTANCE

2014 Yamaha FJR1300ES

Darragh Howard of Rockridge Two Wheels / Vespa Walnut Creek took a pair of Gasolina Classics for a ride. Here’s his take on these vintage style handmade boots.

As a San Franciscan I’m always amazed at what the local hipsters are up to. The retro thing has really taken a grip on this town. Personally, I think riding a fixie around these hills with a u-lock hanging out of the arse pocket of your very tight pants, sporting a full beard and smoking a pipe sounds like a very boring form of torture. However the masses have spoken and it is not torture—it’s cool and hip. The world of motorcycling has of course not missed out on the retro thing and the plethora of retro inspired new bikes on the market is extraordinary. We came back from EICMA last year and my buddy Darren thought the new CB1000 was his favorite bike there.

This isn’t really my best side, but you know you want me anyway.

because the website has a very personal feel and there are many measurements to give before they will even ship your boots—measurements that you may never have measured before, like foot width and calf circumference. Who knows, maybe all us size 10s are getting our boots off the same shelf—but it sure feels way more custom than that.

Gasolina Boots have contributed to this trend and made me a pair of boots called “The Classic.” ($229) I write “made me”

It’s titled Cafe Racers: Speed, Style and Ton-Up Culture, and it’s 224 pages of gorgeous photos and Paul’s meticulously researched, deeply informative writing. The studio photography of 33 original and custom machines, expertly captured by Michael Lichter, is great, perfectly lit and highlighting all the sexy shapes and angles we love about the cafe racer. D’Orleans’ text covers the cultural phenomena that is the cafe racer, a culture that is still strong and vibrant today. Our only complaint about the book is that it spends too much time on non-traditional cafe racers, and features too many bikes from celebrity builders like Doc’s Chops and Roland Sands and not enough of the classics. Where is the Rickman Honda? The Triton? Kawi two-stroke Triples? But the bikes that are featured are fun to look at and imagine riding. If the purpose

Bragging rights and unlimited wheelies, I think. I’m not much of a braggart and lack the skill to do decent wheelies, so I’m not generally the biggest fan of these licenseburning monsters. I think Erik and his engineers get that a lot of potential EBR buyers are realworld riders, not top-tier racers—so rideability is a hallmark of his motorcycles. Styling is also similarly sensible, even utilitarian. Buell is a racer first, so his design choices are for function, not form. But that’s okay, because a sportbike is built to make you go fast, and this bike is fast. That massive frame holds 4.5 gallons of fuel, putting the weight down low and close to the center of gravity. Chassis geometry (22.4 degrees of rake, 3.8 inches of trail, 56inch wheelbase) was optimized, according to Director of Product Development Tony Stefanelli, by splitting the radiator like on the 1125R, keeping things tucked in and tidy without hanging huge, hideous pods on the side of the bike. That’s 20 pounds heavier than the Ducati Panigale, the most-likely competition for the EBR. Both motorcycles are priced identically—$18,995—and appeal to the same demographic: “guys who love bikes, been riding for a while, in their 30s-early 40s and can afford superbikes,” Stefanelli tells me. with control. It feels like a middleweight in the turns and then fires onto the straights with terrifying and brutal acceleration, rocketing you to triple-digit speeds while delivering a touch of lumpy, chugging American-style character. One intake valve opens slightly ahead of the other, creating a swirl effect that enhances burn—better midrange, plus the bike returned better than 50 mpg in EPA testing (60 if you’re really careful, Stefanelli says), making the bike frugal as well as fast. When it’s time to slow down, the giant single disc works much better than what I remember from prior Buell setups. There was no juddering or fade and one or two digits were fine for my pace. It does require a little better pull than the top-notch Brembo systems, and isn’t as sensitive,

but it’s very good. A notable disadvantage is the lack of ABS, but Stefanelli, while acknowledging European mandates would force EBR into putting it on all its motorcycles soon, said the company decided to forgo it because its customers don’t ask for it. Advantage: European manufacturers. Another bit of missing electronic kit is a quick shifter, which would work well with the vacuum-assisted slipper clutch. But the gearbox works well, and though the clutch pull is stiff with the engine off, I found shifting and clutch effort were reasonable, and I liked the gear ratios—second or third worked well in the tight stuff and fifth gear was more than tall enough for this leathersuited chicken to hit an indicated speed of over 140 mph before I rolled off early in

Footpegs and the Future Footpegs, compared to things like traction control, rim brakes and 185-horsepower engines that return 60 mpg, aren’t very sexy. But the EBR’s are notable, designed to meet the needs of both the DOT and trackday junkies alike—the rider pegs are designed to be used without the pivot, bolted to a choice of mounting holes. The shift and brake pegs are also adjustable. Bodywork is racer-friendly as well. It’s light and flexible, and the color is molded into the plastic. That means it doesn’t add a lot of weight to the bike and it’s also crash resistant—and won’t require repainting to repair scuffing. If stuff does break, have no fear, says Director of Product Development Tony Stefanelli—”the regular replacement parts—stuff you damage at a trackday—will have minimal markup.” We will see. Innovative and practical, no? Motorcycles like BMW’s S1000RR and Ducati’s Panigale are also dripping with innovation, but sheesh, they should be, given those companies’ Pentagon-like R&D budgets. EBR didn’t get its sticky fingers into Indian-based backer Hero Moto Corp’s bulging pockets until last year—most of this bike was developed on a shoestring budget, though it’s based on the Buell 1125R and prototype Barracuda that broke cover in 2010. Asking Stefanelli which feature on the bike he’s most proud of, he says it’s that a “handful of people, with very little money, was able to make this.”

The Future My final question about the RX is this: how do you make a successful business model out of a product line consisting of two or three (don’t forget, an “AX” adventure-tourer is also coming) highend luxury items? You don’t, and that’s where Hero comes in. I don’t want to get anybody in trouble, so I won’t name names, but the EBR crew are a friendly bunch and happy to answer questions, even from nosy journalists. So here’s what I found out about EBR’s relationship with Hero. Hero, as we’ve reported before, is as big as EBR is small. But the Hero/ EBR relationship has already paid big dividends for both parties. EBR has the capital to bring its RX to market, and Hero is already selling models infused with EBR technology. Will Hero do the giant faceless corporation thing and water down the passion emanating from the fledgling EBR? No, says Hero’s CEO, Pawan Mujal; “You are different and that’s healthy.”

Right now, EBR’s management won’t say if Hero products will be offered in EBR dealers, either as Heroes (mmmm, heroes!) or as EBRs. But there was some talk—I won’t say from whom—of the exciting Hastur 650cc Twin appearing as an EBR model, which would nicely fill in The claimed load capacity of the 1190RX the gap between the RX and the singleis 375 pounds, which is a lot when you cylinder HX250R Sport, which could consider how little baggage the bike also be an EBR offering. That gives EBR carries compared to its 1125R daddy. a decent street-model lineup, making Harley’s management didn’t want that an EBR franchise a money-making bike to have a full fairing, didn’t like opportunity for new dealers. real clip-on bars, didn’t want sportbike Erik Buell selling a full line-up of footpegs, and just in general didn’t streetbikes, with assistance from like anything too sporty or athletic. an Indian scooter-manufacturing Americans are fat and slow, dammit! behemoth? This is a sportbike built —Gabe Ets-Hokin like a sportbike, with all the equipment anticipation of the Turn One puddle that didn’t disappear until about 2:00 pm. I found the suspension as supremely competent and well-selected as the brakes. Showa supplied the outstanding 43mm Big-Piston fork as well as the linkageless multi-adjustable shock. I asked why no linkage, and Stefanelli told me shock technology is advanced enough that the benefits of the linkage were largely superfluous and outweighed by the disadvantage of a linkage’s maintenance requirements, weight and potential for failure. And on the super-smooth MotoGP road course at Indy, I didn’t miss the linkage one bit. August 2014 | 16 | CityBike.com

you need on a racebike or trackbike, with no compromises or half-measures. Looking for conchos or chrome for this bike? You’ll have to do it yourself.

So here’s a bike with some minuses—what bike doesn’t have them?—but more plusses. It’s made in the USA (I asked Stefanelli if any of it was made in India, given Hero Moto’s stake in EBR, but no, he told me “we have 163 suppliers from 14 countries, I’m sure none of these parts come from India.”), has a two-year warranty, is fast, fun and easy to ride all while being competitively priced with its European paddock mates. It’s the “real American sportbike” Erik Buell has been wanting to build—and maybe you’ve been waiting to buy—since Reagan was president.

t’s just past 5 a.m. on Sunday in south Oakland. A crescent moon hangs in the dark sky above the warehouses and two bikers stand in a silent parking lot. One, who goes by Smoke, is your prototypical Harley rider: shaved head, mustache and a leather vest with Sturgis patches. The other, Cindy Wing, with her orange tie-died head wrap, is the about the last person you might expect to see standing next to a ‘78 Shovelhead in the predawn darkness of industrial Oakland.

The NIMBY workspaces are occupied by industrial artists, Burning Man camps and motorcycle racers. They rent shipping containers inside the 60,000+ square foot warehouse for only a few hundred dollars a month, with extra space negotiable around $1 foot.

let it settle into its rhythm, and then simply turn it up until it’s launching sideways out of a corner, throwing a tortured arc of rubber across an on ramp, away from that stop sign, out of that corner on the track, with fewer worries that you will suddenly find yourself outside the limits. It’s having every rider’s dreams at your fingertips, waiting for you select one from the repertoire, and then conducting it with your own hands. ABS and Traction Control are the new digital drivers and the old analog world is a boring, dangerous one. You can still live in that world if you want to, but the only reason you would is that you’ve never lived like this. There was a day when the best that money could buy was an Italian bike with an overwrought name, all power and no control. But now the power is controlled, harnessed, and the edge defined. The modern rush is tailored, customized, built, and controlled by you, with a comfortable safety net that lets things get real crazy with a lower risk of getting so far out of hand that you end up in the E.R. You can play the destructive song of the sausage creature on repeat. The sound of your tire spinning is accompanied

by a giggle of amusement, not a rictus of fear. And with that comes potential knowledge—this is the freedom to live at the limit, should you so choose. For some, this redefining of the limits only means they’ll make it into the tailpipe of a mail truck about 25 percent slower, because the ABS will slow them down just a bit more before their exceptionally poor judgment finishes them off in the same brutal fashion as so many riders before. But for those who practice some reasonable form of judgment, there is an incredibly availability of new experiences in the new scene, things that no responsible rider would admit to doing—yet every rider enjoys. Go on, step into the new world, revel in the freedom that being able to overdo it on the throttle and brakes provides you. Remember, kids—all this newfangled whizbang electronic stuff like traction control and lean angle-sensitive ABS is amazingly effective and getting better all the time, but you still have to know how to ride well and manage risk if you want to avoid singing a verse with the sausage creature. -ed

That’s thinking the best of him, isn’t it? That he’s simply not too bright. He’s probably a genuinely nice but not so clever guy posing as an equal opportunity hater—trying to enrage us good citizens. I wondered, as I often do, what he does for a living... As we rolled toward the park for the moments of silence, I rode next to two Suzuki Hayabusas, not the usual cruiser poker run mounts. After a quick glance or two, I concluded that it was a woman riding the one next to me. First I noted her hair, a pink mohawk growing out blonde. She had a helmet -- locked to the toggle just under the passenger section of the Hayabusa’s seat. A patch on her vest said: I like you. I’ll kill you last. Her bike was black and not glossy. At all. t took a long time for me to admit it, but riding with Bernice on the back of a Honda XR 250L, was stretching the performance envelope badly out of shape: We were wrinkling the seat up, splitting the seams and tearing holes in the corners. The nicest thing you could say was that going downhill was possible. The problem was, just about all the dirt roads we were riding had as many uphills as downhills. In all fairness, the Honda has a stout heart but was just too small to pull the weight we were putting on it. A larger engine was needed. What we wanted was an XR450L; the nearest we could get was the XR 650L, that Honda is selling a few million of to all the folks looking for a 450 and banging their heads against a wall. Next, I mounted a Corbin seat that lowers the seat height to where a normal human being can feel in control at all times. The nicest is that the rear section of the Corbin seat is shaped to fit – you might have already noticed this – the wonderful female form. Bernice compares the seat switch to riding an underfed mule then switching to a well-fed Clydesdale. AND NOW, A WORD FROM OUR LAWN GNOME

CityBike has just threatened the safety of our nation. (CityBike July, caption on page I have an example similar to Maynard’s 16). The Homeland Security operation was (“Tell me How,” July 2014). A few years ago more than a bit concerned about all these a young friend started riding. foreign-bike people gathering at the Quail Lodge, and asked me to keep an eye on He mostly focused on the freedom it what was going on, make sure there was no offered, and the late-night rides, and the socializing. I tried a few times to talk about subversity. Now my cover is blown, and our country is in danger. left-lane turners, and U-turners, and the most common types of accidents, and what Clement Salvadori to watch out for, but he wasn’t interested. Atascadero As you might guess, last year he broke both legs and his pelvis when an older lady We want to know what you think, as we are not turned in front of him, in an accident that mind-readers. Soget off our ass and write us a I think was entirely avoidable (though I letter: [email protected] or go to our Facebook never said that to him). think is pretty Goddamned cool: PO Box 10659,

But I think my story and Maynard’s story Oakland 94610. are just anecdotal evidence. More people with bad judgment are young, because they haven’t been killed yet, or haven’t learned to have good judgment as they age. Plus we tend to notice the young people with bad judgment because they stand out, rather than the safe and sensible young people who either have innate good judgment or have learned from those who do. It’s sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. People with good judgment would be receptive to your advice, but you don’t feel the need to give it. You only talk to the people with bad judgment, and they aren’t receptive because they don’t think they need it. God I feel old, Dave Wilson

Our clubhouse is situated at the foot of the famous but now defunct off-road riding hills in Point Richmond. Our club exists to promote the sport and recreation of motorcycle riding. Annually, we host a street ride/poker run in October and a Family Enduro in the Mendocino National forest in November. Meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. Visitors are welcome and we invite you to come by. 818 Dornan Drive, Point Richmond, CA 94801 WWW .RRMC .CC
