WEDNESDAY AUGUST 27, 2014

Wildcats dominate Aurora in season opener Lee Stubblefield The Cassville Wildcats made a strong statement with their 36-12 destruction of Aurora on Friday, August 22. Opening the 2014 season on the road, Lance Parnell’s troops won the battle with a dominant defensive effort and a punishing, clock-devouring running game. The Wildcats strangled Aurora’s offense in the first half. The Houns reached their own 38-yard line twice, but never crossed their own 40, much less the midfield stripe. The second half was no kinder to the Aurora offense, but the home team did mount a drive against Cassville’s depth-chart reserves on its final possession of the game. The 70-yard drive ended with a threeyard Tanner Schnelle touchdown run - Aurora’s only offensive score of the night. The hype leading up to the game concentrated on

Aurora’s big line and the expected aerial arsenal from quarterback Payton Evans, a sophomore with a bigtime arm. But Evans, who endured three sacks and a lot of hits, spent much of the night running from the Cassville front seven. His stat line showed four completions in fourteen attempts, for a net of only 12 yards, and two interceptions. The Wildcats punished the Aurora defense with a classic power running game. Senior tailback Chase Jackson led the charge, scoring two touchdowns while gaining 115 yards on 25 carries. Gabe Kirk, the senior signal-caller, added a score while posting 91 yards on 15 carries. Sophomore Tyler Arndt also scored on the ground for the ‘Cats. Cassville rolled up 270 yards of total offense on the night, leading to a lopsided

miserable and dangerous heat conditions, Cassville and Aurora teed it up at 7 p.m. as usual. The officials did stop play regularly for needed water breaks, but

Superhero theme announced for Chamber’s Chili Cook Off

Charlea Mills The Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce announced the theme of this year’s Chili and Salsa Cook Off to be superheroes last week The Chili Cook-Off is slated for Saturday, October 25, in conjunction with the annual Fall Show. Mindi Artherton, Chamber Director, stated, “Everywhere you look you see superheroes: in the movies, on tv, clothing items and much more. We thought it would be something fun our cookers could get behind and be creative. I think the kids will also think our theme is very fun.” The theme is decided on each year by a planning committee comprised on Chamber of Commerce members. Last year’s theme was hillbillies. Booths at the event each year decorate for the year’s theme to add to the festive spirit, but also hoping to vie for the community selection of most spirited booth and best decorate booth, each nets $50 cash for the winner. Other community-chosen awards will be People’s Choice Chili - $50 and People’s Choice Salsa $50. Judges will determine the top three salsa and chili cookers with cash prizes being $150 for first, $100 for second and $75 for third. The event schedule this year has some old favorites, but also a new feature or two

to keep attendees on their toes. The Fall Show returns this year on Oct. 23, 25 and 26. The Show once again features HomeTown Sound and the RedHots. Thursday and Saturday night shows are at 7:30 p.m. with the Sunday Show at 2 p.m. The Cassville Fire Protection District pancake breakfast will be served from 6:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Fellowships Hall. Pancakes are all you can eat for a donation. The Cassville YMCA will also host the Chili Runs 5K and one-mile fun run beginning at 8 a.m. from the Family Life Center parking lot. For more information on the run, call Dove at (417) 846-1535. Throughout the day there will be live music and entertainment, a pet parade, food and craft vendors and more with the booths opening at 8 a.m. and chili judging beginning at noon. Awards will be presented around 2 p.m. New to the cook-off this year will be a pumpkin decorating and painting contest. Artherton said, “We will open the contest to 12 individuals, six will paint and six will carve. Contestants will have one hour to complete their pumpkin.” The winner will receive $50 in Cassville cash and tickets to The Show. The event emcee, Lane Truman, will auction the pumpkins off with

the proceeds going to benefit the Christmas lighting project. Events like the Chili Cook-Off are a great way to support the community and the local Chamber. Kelly Mills, Chamber President,

If the land is still not sold, the county collector does not need to sale or advertise that property again more often than every five years after the third offering. Land Tax Sales are held the fourth Monday of every August for any property that has delinquent fees against it. Of the 41 properties that didn’t sell, Varner said virtually all of them are lots located in the dozens of subdivisions surrounding Table Rock Lake.

This new service by American Legion Post 118 for our local veterans is a much-needed service to those who gave so much to our country.

At Barry County’s annual Land Tax Sale held on Monday, August 25, property sales were up significantly over last year, according to County Collector Janice Varner. This year’s sale had 50 bidders with the sale lasting a little over an hour. This year, 66 properties sold for $150,441.38, up by $91,015.92 over the total sold in 2013. The County offered 173 properties, of those, 41 were being listed for their third and final time, Varner said. According to State Statute 140.250, whenever any lands have been offered for sale for delinquent taxes, interest, penalty and costs by the collector of the county for any two successive years and no person has bid

Health care policy continues to be at the forefront of American politics and for all the wrong reasons. We all know Obamacare passed Congress in 2010 without one Republican vote. We all know about the botched rollout of its website, repeated changes to the law without congressional approval, and the 2013 Lie of the Year, “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it” by the president. All of this adds up to a failure of leadership and a flawed approach to tackling an important problem of public policy. This flawed approach is characterized by an overreaching federal government that thinks it can force people into one-size-fits-all health care plans and that government makes better health care decisions than the people actually paying for it. Most Americans are not interested in a government big enough or powerful enough to force you to buy health insurance or one that tramples all over our religious freedoms by forcing employers to pay for health care procedures or services that violate their religious beliefs. This approach to governing is utterly unAmerican and has resulted in more federal government control, less personal free-

dom and immoral, runaway deficit spending that our children and grandchildren will be stuck paying for. Solving the problems of our health care system does not require a large government bureaucracy or talking heads in Washington, D.C., making decisions for Missouri. Most of the decisions of government should be made closest to those affected by them, where the voters can keep an eye on their government. We can make those decisions here, the Missouri way. In the recent legislative session, lawmakers came together to craft a health care bill that remains true to our principles of limited government and personal responsibility while offering solutions to some of the problems that exist in our health care system. The Missouri way came by way of a bill I sponsored, Senate Bill 754. This bill started out as a very simple extension of Missouri Rx, a prescription assistance

program for low-income seniors that was set to expire in August this year. Missouri Rx helps elderly Missourians that fall into the Medicare Part D donut hole with out-of-pocket prescription costs. This is a completely voluntary program with income limits and set at a reasonable cost to taxpayers. I included a sunset provision in the bill so the Legislature will have to reexamine the program in three years to ensure it is working as intended and not costing us more than it should. I wonder if ObamaCare would still be around if it had to be reauthorized by Congress every few years. As SB 754 picked up steam, other legislators amended their health care bills to it. These included the “Show-Me Extension for Community Health Care Outcomes Program,” which is a partnership between the Department of Health & Senior Services and the University of Missouri to

deliver health care to underserved areas around the state. Also added was the Show-Me Healthy Babies Program which allows Missouri to cover unborn children in the state’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This will help women in Missouri have safe pregnancies and healthy babies at very little cost to Missouri taxpayers. Another provision allows medical school graduates to obtain a temporary assistant physician license and practice in underserved areas while being supervised by a physician. By the last week of session, SB 754 was a priority bill and passed with strong bipartisan support in both the Senate and the House. The governor signed the bill a few weeks ago and it will go into effect at the end of this month. The debate over health care centers on two very different approaches. There are those who believe we should give more power to the federal government to administer health care and force health care decisions on us. The other approach is to empower individuals and families in their health care decisions and provide incentives for innovation and experimentation to expand coverage and deliver quality care. This is the Missouri way, and is consistent with what we accomplished with SB 754. As always, I welcome your ideas, questions and concerns about Missouri government. In the midst of the primary election, in which the voters made some very important decisions regarding the future of our state, Missouri has been at the center of national attention with the events occurring in Ferguson, and our country is on the brink of becoming more heavily involved with the crisis in Iraq following the beheading of an American Journalist by the despicable terrorist organization, ISIS. I first want to thank everyone who supported me in the primary election, despite the lack of opposition. I wish the voter turnout would have been higher given the importance of some of the other decisions that were made in the voting booth. The voters that did get out and vote made a few things very clear: 1. Missourians support further protections to the rights that have been guaranteed by the 2nd amendment. 2. Missourians expect the protections provided by the 4th amendment to the US Constitution to extend to their right to privacy and security in their electronic data and communications. 3. Missourians do not support raising the sales tax to pay for transportation infrastructure. 4. Missourians, particularly the citizens of Barry County, do not want governmental agencies to regulate them out of the farming business. It is now time for the legis-

lature to move on, with these questions now decided, and go to work for you in the veto session on September 10th. The governor has vetoed 34 bills this year, and has vetoed or restricted 116 line items in the state budget. Veto session promises to be interesting this year, as we consider the governors objections to these bills. One bill I am adamantly determined to override is the bill sponsored by Senator Sater that would extend the waiting period prior to receiving an abortion from 24 hours to 72 hours. Senator Sater worked very hard to get this through the Senate prior to the governor deciding to veto it, and I do not want that work to go to waste. This is the most important piece of life-saving legislation to be passed in Missouri since I was elected to the General Assembly and likely much longer than that. There are other bills that we will consider of varying impact, but none in my opinion, are as important as that one. The shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson by a police officer is a horrible situation. As you well know, It has resulted in riots, looting, other deaths, and a media circus unlike anything I can recall in our state during my lifetime. I am disappointed in the national media for fueling the fire of racial tension, and finger pointing by pub-

lic officials. I sincerely believe that had certain outlets not camped out and begun hosting their nationally televised nighttime shows from the streets of Ferguson, that tons of instances of property damage, economic loss from businesses closing, and growing hatred between citizens would have been avoided. I am absolutely sickened by certain outlets hosting guests who blame the shooting of Michael Brown on the fact that the officer was white and that he doesn’t care about black lives and I am angered by elected officials demanding that the officer be prosecuted before any facts have been released. What has occurred is that there are certain groups of people who WANT the officer to have done the WRONG thing, so it will vindicate their argument that the shooting was race based, and if the grand jury chooses not to indict the officer based on the facts, then these groups will blame the lack of charges on the prosecutor and the grand jury as being racist. We absolutely have to overcome this kind of dialogue. I want to make a couple of points. First, the increase in incidences of excessive use of force by police, and the over militarization of police has become alarming over the years. There have been many examples of excessive

use of force in the electronic age where many things are caught on video. That being said, the US Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to a trial by a jury of one’s peers, and that they are innocent until proven guilty beyond any reasonable doubt. To try to impact the fate of a man’s life and have him prosecuted for murder before any details are available surrounding the incident in which he is involved is not American, and public officials like Congressman Lacy Clay who have demanded that this be prosecuted as a civil rights violation before any information, such as the fact that the officer suffered an orbital blowout fracture as a result of the confrontation with Michael Brown, has been released, is wrong. I hope that you will join me in praying for the citizens of Ferguson, the members of the law enforcement community who have put their lives on the line every night, and the business owners and employees who have lost income and wages due to the riots and protests that have occurred over the last couple of weeks. I also hope you will join me in praying for comfort, forgiveness, and understanding for the family of Michael Brown. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you in the legislature. Duck race, BBQ raises for Wheaton Fire Dept. Shakin’ in the Shell sponsor: King’s Marina

Pictured at King’s River Marina, left to right: Ella Arne, dock hand; Gage Holloway, manager; and Callie Woods, dock hand. The annual Wheaton BBQ was held on Saturday to raise funds for the Wheaton Fire Department. It was a very successful event with the community coming together to enjoy barbecue, free rides, craft booths and more. The duck race winners this year were: 1st - Kelly Brattin, Wheaton, $500; 2nd - Taylor Prie, Neosho, $250; 3rd - Riley Cooper, Wheaton, $125; 4th - Johnnie Hilery, Washburn, $75; and 5th - Mickey Mitchell, Wheaton, $50. Mitchell donated the $50 back to the fire department.

King’s River Marina is a Silver Sponsor of this year’s Shakin’ in the Shell Festival and Car Show. Owned by Dwayne and Vonda Boggs since May of 2012, Dwayne describes their original intent in moving into this area as looking for a house, but when their realtor advised them there was a marina for sale, they looked at the numbers and ended up buying it. Dwayne commented they never intended to buy a marina, but that it has been a good decision. “This is a good

Arvest of Shell Knob to collect food for needy families

Arvest Bank, Shell Knob, will be partnering with The Alliance of Churches Food Pantry for the 1 Million Meals initiative, a twomonth, bank-wide effort to provide one million meals or more to those in need. The Alliance of Churches Food Pantry will receive nonperishable food and monetary donations made at Arvest in Shell Knob from Sept. 3 through Nov. 1. The Alliance of Churches Food Pantry helps the public with a food pantry, help to school children and assistance with community religious needs. “We are so happy to be chosen as a recipient of Arvest Bank’s initiative in our area. The funds and meals raised as part of this campaign will go towards helping so many families in Shell Knob, and just in time for the busy holiday season,” James Atkinson of The Alliance of Churches Food Pantry, said. Shell Knob residents can help support The Alliance of Churches Food Pantry during the initiative by dropping off nonperishable food items or purchasing a 1 Million Meals paper can for $1 at the Arvest branch in Shell Knob

or calling (866) 952-9523 to contribute. Every dollar raised through 1 Million Meals provides the equivalent of five meals for local, hungry families. In its fourth year, Arvest Bank’s 1 Million Meals campaign challenges bank associates and customers alike to participate in fundraising efforts and make donations to fight hunger in the 120 communities the bank serves. Last year, Arvest banks, associates and customers raised 1.8 million meals. This year’s effort benefits 59 different organizations in the four states, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma, Arvest serves. In 2012, one in six American households reported food hardship, or not having adequate funds to provide enough food for their family. And, out of the 50 states, Missouri ranks seventh in food hardship.

place to live. We really enjoy Shell Knob and are glad to be back to small town living after having been away for almost 35 years.” Dwayne grew up in El Dorado Springs and Vonda in Springfield. Dwayne advised 2014 has been a good year for King’s River Marina due, at least in part, to an improving economy. In addition to increasing their marketing efforts, Dwayne advises they have increased their product mix, including more wake boards,

surf boards and paddle boards, as well as high end clothing. They are also partnering with Table Rock Water Sports to sell boats, both the Landau and Hampton Bay. Why support this year’s Shakin’ Festival? Dwayne said, “Anything you do for your local community is going to be worthwhile. It is a pretty big event for Shell Knob. If it does well, the community does well. If the community does well, businesses do well. It’s trickle down.”

FOOTBALL from FRONT Cassville kicked off to start the contest, an interesting theme in its own right. After years of stellar kicking/special teams play, this edition of the Wildcats entered the season with a lot of concerns about the kicking game. Kendal Branham, a junior with a soccer pedigree, handled the kickoff and placement chores for Cassville against Aurora, while senior quarterback Gabe Kirk took over the punting duties. It was Branham's first appearance in a Cassville Wildcat football uniform. Aurora's first possession saw the Houn Dawgs gain one first down, courtesy of a roughing penalty after the Wildcat defense had forced a 4th and 12 situation. But Aurora fared no better with the new set of downs, and Evans punted to the Cassville 49yard line. Cassville answered with a 51-yard scoring drive, capped by Jackson's one-yard plunge into the end zone. The Wildcats chewed up the Aurora d-line and the clock, taking 6:21 off the official timepiece. Cassville was flagged three times on the drive, twice for holding and once for an illegal block. But the Wildcats shrugged off the lost yardage and methodically "matriculated" down the field to score, with Jackson plunging into the end zone.

It sounded better when Hank Stram said it. Branham calmly split the uprights with his first varsity conversion, and Cassville took a 7-0 lead. The first quarter ended with no further scoring. Aurora stubbornly stuck to the ground game, a tactic that led to more punts from Evans than passes. Penalties continued to plague the Cassville offense, leading Parnell to comment later, "Our offense has some messes to clean up." Following a short punt, Cassville took possession at the Aurora 48-yard line with 8:09 showing on the secondquarter clock. Kirk excelled on the nine-play scoring drive, carrying four times for 29 yards, including the sixyard quarterback blast up the middle to score. Branham's PAT attempt hammered the left upright, but the Wildcats still led by a 13-0 count with 3:42 left in the half. The Houns gained two yards on two runs following the kickoff, and faced a thirdand-8 at their own 24-yard line. Evans dropped straight back and threw the short out to the left sideline. Brett Nickle jumped the route and intercepted the pass in full stride at the twenty. The Aurora crowd watched in disbelief as Nickle raced into the end zone to up the score to 19-0. Branham nailed the PAT

for a 20-0 Cassville lead with 3:02 on the clock. Then another three-andout for Aurora gave Cassville the ball at its own 34-yard line with 1:46 left. After an interception by Aurora’s Friggle, Aurora pulled within 20-6 as the half waned. Although Dylan Castro's PAT attempt failed, the defensive score gave Aurora hope for a second half that would start with the Wildcats kicking off. The Cassville defense had no intention of allowing a fairy-tale ending for the home team. The Houns could not move the chains to open the third quarter, and a high but short punt from Evans gave Cassville possession at the Aurora 45-yard line. Kirk broke outside for 15 yards on first down, but was dinged on the play. Leigh Cox entered the game at quarterback for Cassville. Chase Jackson took over the drive and the game. The senior back sliced the line twice for gains of 4 and 1 yards, then broke off right tackle for a 19-yard sprint to set up a first-and-goal situation. "First down and goal to go for the Wildcats at the Aurora six-yard line. Cox still at quarterback. He takes the snap, hands to Jackson, he breaks off right tackle and he scores! Touchdown Cassville!" On his fourth consecutive carry, Jackson bulled through and over Aurora tacklers for the score. Branham's third successful PAT of the night created a 27-6 lead with 8:55

left in the third quarter. Skylar Cahill returned Branham's kickoff to the 19-yard line, where the Cassville defense held Aurora to another three and out. Evans threw incomplete on first down, then was sacked by Andrew Shepard on the following play. Moses Martinez gained 6 yards on a reverse, but the Houns still were 9 yards shy of a first down. in the final quarter, but the game was never in doubt. Cole York and the JV offense drove 51 yards midway through the period on a drive that saw Tyler Arndt score from a yard out. Tyler Flowers was wide with his PAT attempt, and Cassville held a 36-6 lead.

Aurora did score late against the Wildcat reserves to create the 36-12 final. This was a satisfying start for the Wildcats, a team that struggled out of the gate a year ago. In 2013, Cassville started 1-4 before knocking off then undefeated and state-ranked Monett to start a five-game winning streak. But as Parnell cautioned his team in the post-game huddle, "This is one football game." The Wildcats will host the Mountain Grove Panthers in their home opener on Friday, August 29. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.

Wildcats to recognize football alumni for classes 1961-1965 Rachael Freeman The Cassville Wildcats are eager to play in front in front of their home crowd and will get to do so this Friday night. In conjunction with homeopener, the Wildcats will also be hosting Cassville Football Alumni Night. “The community of Cassville has embraced football and Wildcat Nation has become an amazing 12th-man for us over the years. That support stems from the great alumni we have here in Cassville,” head coach Lance Parnell stated. Parnell continued, “Friday night is just a small way for us to show how much we appreciate the tradition that has come before us.” The Cassville Wildcat Football Program will honor

football alumni who played the 1960-1964 football seasons (graduating classes 1961-1965) Friday evening. Alumni festivities will begin with check-in at the north end zone between 5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. The north end zone will be available for the honorees to watch the game from. Food and drinks will be available as well. During pre-game warm up, the honored alumni are welcome to visit the Wildcat’s sideline to get a close-up of the team. At approximately 6:35 p.m., the alumni will be recognized in front of the Wildcat Nation crowd. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

Bluel hired as dairy specialist

Bluel Charlea Mills After long-time dairy specialist Tony Rickard announced his retirement from the Barry County Extension, the office has a new specialist taking over. Reagan Bluel began in her new position on July 9. She is excited about her new job in the county where she feels she will be a good fit based on her experience in the field. Bluel stated, “While managing the Ohio State herd, I lived and breathed the Land Grant University mantra: teaching, research and outreach. It was my unique goal to achieve all three of these items while still maintaining an economically profitable grade A dairy herd. So, with this experience, I am keenly aware of the needs of both dairy producers and the university.” Bluel also has a Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Sciences and a Master’s in Ruminant Nutrition from Mizzou. Bluel said that she really has a passion for dairy cows. She said, “I possess a strong desire to help producers improve the health and production of the herd through See DAIRY on 3B

BC farmers eligible for drought compensation

FFA LEADERSHIP from 3B skills. Area officers will share what they learned at the Institute with FFA members in their communities and surrounding area. The National FFA Orga-

nization makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural ed-

ucation. Nationally there are over 500,000 FFA members. Missouri ranks fourth in the nation with over 25,000 FFA members.

Pictured above, in the front row: Kelsey Elbel; Samantha Marre; Lindsay Anderson, from Sarcoxie; Maura Butler, from Seneca; Kayla Mason, from Wheaton; Jesika Hall, from McDonald County; Cole Edwards; and Morgan Walkup. In the back row: Deidra Westpheling, from Cassville; Billie House, from Purdy; Hailey Paulsen, from Aurora; and Angel Roller, from Seneca.

Steve Chapman Barry County livestock producers who suffered grazing losses during the 2012 summer drought may be entitled to compensation thanks to recently passed legislation. The Agricultural Act of 2014 authorized the Livestock Forage Disaster Assistance Program (LFP). The LFP provides funds for livestock producers who suffered grazing losses during the 2012 grazing season. According to Brian Blount, executive director of the Barry County Farm Service Agency, Barry County livestock producers who feel they may be entitled to compensation should contact the his office. “Just give us a call and we’ll set up an appointment,” he said. Blount added that livestock producers who believe they are entitled to funds for grazing losses during the 2012 drought should know what their herd size was on

July 24, 2012, which was when the 2012 drought season officially began. He also stated that livestock producers who lease their grazing land should have a copy of their lease agreement or a form signed by the landowner with them when they come to the meeting. Land will be one of the factors that determine compensation. According to Blount, livestock producers grazing their animals on open land will receive payment if they have more than one cow for every two acres of land, while those who graze their animals on timber land will receive payment if they have more than one cow for every 10 acres. Other factors also affect eligibility. Blount said that producers must have had an average of $900,000 adjusted gross income or less per year for the past three years, they cannot bother any wetland or highly erodible land, and

they must be a United States citizen over 18 years of age. As to how much money will be paid, Blount stated that eligible producers will receive $150 per adult cow and $100 for every calf weighing over 500 pounds that they owned on July 24, 2012. Those who sold animals up to 60 days prior to that date will also receive credit for those animals. Compensation is capped at $125,000. The money is paid by direct deposit, so producers will need to also bring a voided check with them when they go to their appointment at Blount’s office. Producers may file for compensation for losses from the 2012 drought until the deadline on January 20, 2015. For more information or to set up an appointment, call the Barry County Farm Service Agency, located on 76 Main Street in Cassville, at (417) 847-2862, ext. 2.

The Wheaton FFA chapter officers attended the Area Leadership Conference at Crowder College in Neosho. During the conference, the officers were split up into groups amongst similar officers from area schools. In their groups, they participated in different leadership activities, as well as discussing what their office duties consist of. The officers then chose a word that best described the FFA organization using the letter they were given, creating the word “success.” Pictured, from left to right, are Secretary Anastasia Lowry, Chaplain Haley Beck, Treasurer Yesenia Castro, Historian Brittany Harmon, President Kayla Mason, First Vice President Kim Day, Second Vice President Meng Yang and Reporter Vanessa Cook.

Washburn duo opens new restaurant Emerson Steve Chapman A new restaurant has opened in Washburn. Country Cooking, located at 26131 Highway 37 (next to Country Package), recently opened for business and will celebrate its grand opening on August 29. The diner was started by business partners Gautam Maharjan and Roy Fair. Maharjan, who also owns Country Package, said the decision to open the restaurant was influenced by a wish to fill a void in the community. “I wanted to create a place for local people to eat at,” he said. Maharjan said he started talking to Fair, whom he has known for about three years, about a restaurant in March 2014. “Roy was here, we were talking about a restaurant, and we said ‘Okay, let’s go together.’” They converted an open space in the gas station to a diner, and Country Cooking was born. Country Cooking is open on Monday through Thursday, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, 6 a.m.

to 9 p.m., and on Sundays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Breakfast is served until 10:30 a.m. and features traditional breakfast items such as omelets, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, french toast, oatmeal, bacon, sausage and hashbrowns. For lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers sandwiches such as hamburgers, BLTs, grilled cheese and hot dogs. The sandwiches come with a choice of fries, onion rings, tater tots, home-style potatoes or chips. The restaurant also serves dinner items such as fried chicken, ham steak, pork chops, and chicken fried steak, all of which come with mashed potatoes and gravy, a vegetable and a small salad. Country Cooking also has free wi-fi for dine-in customers. Customers who wish to carry-out their meals can call the restaurant at (417) 826-5385 to order ahead. The name Country Cooking, according to Maharjan, was chosen to reflect the tastes of those who live in the area. “The people here like country cooking,” he said.

“We wanted to focus on local people and what they want.” Maharjan and Fair plan to offer discounts on food during the diner’s grand opening celebration, which runs from Friday, August 29, until Sunday, August 31. During this time, anyone purchasing a meal can also have coffee, tea or soda for free. Those with children can also purchase a child’s meal at half-price with every regularly priced entree. Additionally, they are offering their Big Country Breakfast, which includes a whole bone-in ham steak, three eggs, hashbrowns and choice of toast or biscuits and gravy for only $5.49, a dollar off from the regular price of $6.49. Fair is also offering a special dinner featuring smoked ribs he is having catered in. He described the ribs as being “so tender, you don’t have to chew them.” The dinner will consist of three ribs, two side items, and a choice of bread for $8.95. Fair said if the ribs prove popular, they’ll become part of the regular menu. “We will be trying new things to see what satisfies our customers,” he said. Maharjan said he believes patrons who eat at Country Cooking will enjoy the experience. “Come down and try our food,” he said. “We will give you our best.”

Shakin’ in the Shell sponsor: Green Mountain Realty

Pictured above, left to right: Pat Mrstik, Realtor; Roger Pinnell Broker/Owner; and Cortney Kirkpatrick, Realtor. Green Mountain Realty is a silver sponsor of Shell Knob’s 9th Annual Shakin’ in the Shell Festival and Car Show which will take place Saturday, September 20, 2014. When asked how his business has been this year, owner Roger Pinnell commented, “The first six months of this year were as good as all of last year, and last year was good. Business has picked up. The economy seems to be improving. This is a great time to buy a house or real estate.” Pinnell acquired Green Mountain Realty from Wanda Donaldson a year ago and noted that over the 26 years she owned this business, “She invested a lot in the community. She supported almost all the community activities. She was always supporting them or donating to them and I’m trying to continue that tradition,” Pinnell concluded. Pinnell commented that both Pat Mrstik, who has been a realtor for 23 years, and Cortney Kirkpatrick, who recently obtained her real estate license provide the benefit to anyone who contacts his office of being able

to offer plenty of help when someone calls or comes in because of their real estate knowledge and hopes to eventually add another realtor to his staff. The value Pinnell sees in supporting the Shakin’ in the Shell Festival and Car Show is, “It’s an activity that the whole community can get involved in, something everybody in town can do, plus it puts Shell Knob on the map. If you don’t do these kinds of things you become a name on the map that they don’t even recognize as a town.” Pinnell added “The main reason I support the Shakin’ in the Shell this year and every year is that I like Shell Knob, and I want people to know about it.”

Pictured above, from left to right: Brenda Johnson, store manager; Mattie Stimble; and owners Gene and Nancy Stimble. Campbell Point Marina is partnering with The Harbor Boat Sales to be a Silver Sponsor of this year’s Shakin’ in the Shell Festival and Car Show, scheduled for Saturday, September 20. Nancy and Gene Stimble have owned Campbell Point Marina since 1995 and have plans underway to build a new store this winter, as well as rebuild two new docks that were destroyed by a storm June 5, and possibly add a third dock. Their plans include doubling the size of the current store, adding an upstairs level and hopefully getting a bathroom on the dock and eliminating the port a potties in the parking lot. Nancy and Gene expressed special appreciation of their customers patronage over the years, espe-

cially “through the storms we have had, they just keep coming back.” The Stimble’s goal is to “try to provide a good service to their customers so they do come back and hope they will enjoy the new improvements.” While the Stimble’s recognize winter weather conditions can affect the construction schedule, Nancy commented she hopes they can have an open house next spring that celebrates project completion as well as their 20th anniversary of Campbell Point Marina ownership. The Stimbles are also excited about The Harbor Boat Sales establishing a sales office at Campbell Point. Nancy stated they are a “huge asset to our business as well as to Shell Knob with their great line of boats: Cobalt, Chap-

arral and Yamaha. Having them right on the water is so handy.” Why support the Shakin’ in the Shell? Gene sees the value as “getting all the support for the Community,” supporting their customers that come in from Wichita and supporting their many local customers. Nancy added, “When people retire, we want them to think of Shell Knob.” Gene also commented “the community itself, having a grocery store and a school and all that here in town, that is important, that is why we like to support the school, we buy all our groceries at the grocery store, we try to shop at Shell Knob. This is really a big plus not just for the community but for our business.”

MO Highway Patrol warns against ATV dangers In rural Missouri, there are many activities that seem to be more prevalent than in the metropolitan areas of the state and the use of all-terrain or off-road utility vehicles seem to be one of them. There is no doubt these types of vehicles are used in metropolitan areas, however, in rural areas they are used more predominately and in a broader variety of situations. Obviously, in rural Missouri, these vehicles are used for agricultural purposes, hunting, and in other recreational off-road settings. Popularity of these vehicles has immensely increased and a person doesn’t have to drive far in rural Missouri to see ATV’s being ridden on and off the roadway by a variety of age groups. In past articles, the Patrol has provided information concerning the legality of the use of these vehicles on and off the roadway, but the purpose of this article is to stress the safe operation of such vehicles. In the past few years, traffic crash data has shown more individuals are being injured or killed using allterrain vehicles, which has no doubt increased with

their popularity. Missouri 2013 traffic crash data indicates 29 people were killed and 329 were injured while riding all-terrain vehicles. The data reveals most ATV crashes occur on public roads; however, many occur on private property. Data involving private property ATV crashes is likely not as accurate as it should be due to the fact that many private property or off-road ATV crashes are not reported unless there are very serious injuries or a fatality. In 2013, six individuals who were killed and 120 who were injured in Missouri ATV crashes were 18 years of age and younger. The main factors of ATV crashes would include inattention and operation in a careless or negligent manner. Many individuals who acquire ATV’s or off-road utility vehicles seem to have a mind-set that they are “toys or just something fun to ride,” or a harmless way for their child to pass the time rather than a piece of machinery that can be extremely dangerous if not operated correctly. As far as children operating ATV’s, even though there is

no age requirement to drive an ATV, this does not mean a child can always safely operate one. As with any piece of machinery, motor vehicle, or motorcycle it is important that all operators first be instructed by someone qualified on the proper and safe way to operate them. Many ATV crashes are caused by riders who are not familiar with controls or lack necessary experience. ATV’s are made in many sizes so it is important to match the size of the rider with the ATV. Riding around obstacles, on steep inclines, and at high speeds are all dangerous and can lead to very serious crashes. In off-road situations, it is very important to know the terrain and never “overdrive” your capabilities or the capabilities of your vehicle. Of course, always wearing a helmet, boots and other protective clothing cannot be stressed enough. All riders should have a high degree of respect for their ATV and realize although they can be ridden for enjoyment purposes, “off-roading” or careless operation can bring about disastrous results. As adults and parents, we need to

make sure any child riding an ATV is very closely supervised at all times. Missouri law states, “No person under the age of 16 shall operate an ATV in Missouri unless he or she is accompanied by or under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian, or is accompanied by an adult who is authorized by the parent or guardian.” This law does not apply on private property owned by the parent or guardian of such person operating the all-terrain vehicle. ATV’s and off-road utility vehicles have many valuable uses and can be ridden for pleasure, but we have to respect them, be properly trained on their use, and operate them responsibly. If you allow your child to operate one of these vehicles, please closely supervise the activity. As with any piece of machinery, a multitude of situations can occur that can have serious consequences. An informative brochure about ATV’s can be viewed by going to the Missouri State Highway Patrol website (www.mshp.dps. missouri.gov) and clicking on the “brochures” icon.
