President’s Message: As the Show Chairman for the 2011 National I want to take this chance to thank the many people that helped to make our National such a success. I was naming names in my head and thought…..I am surely going to miss people…I certainly don’t want that to happen. So by grouping I am going to start with our Judges. Thanks to Jon Cole, Jennette Gibson, Mel Stanley and Kristie Rasmussen. These folks basically judged for us just for the love of judging and furthering the sport of dogs. Thank you to the Beehive Cluster committee for the mountain of support. You can’t even appreciate how accommodating they were with the attitude of “what else do you need?” Thank you to the members of the Great Salt Lake Dog Training club for being ring stewards, selling catalogs, filling swag bags and taking care of hospitality. What would we have done without you? I don’t want to even think about that! Thanks to our many club members that kept me on track. From Paul taking care of the Dr. Nash tribute to Barbara reminding me about flowers. And to the HCA members that were in Salt Lake and pitched in with the weekend…wheeeww…. Thanks to Michelle for your hours of work, my hubby Jeff and daughter Katie for putting up with my craziness…especially when it seemed in involve 3:00 AM! Thank you to the Harrier Club of America for the opportunity to be the 2011 Show Chairman!! Wendy

Harrier Club of America Annual Meeting May 5, 2011 South Jordan, UT Attendees Michael Walsh Jeff McCleery Wendy McCleery Kevin Shupenia

Sharon Manning Evan Isham Michelle Larsen Donna Smiley Mindy Isham

Minutes of the Last Meeting The minutes of the 2010 Annual Meeting were published in the Newsletter last year. There were no questions, or requests for changes or additions. The 2010 Annual Meeting minutes as written and published in the newsletter were unanimously approved. Report of President The folks from Perry, Georgia who hosted our Specialty in 2008 were in contact. We will probably not be back in Georgia for a while. Report of the Secretary The website was updated during the year and we have a new web master (Evan Isham). Many, many thanks to Ellen Parr who was the web master for so many years! The web master is looking for feedback and suggestions ([email protected]) for anything new or different we could do with the site. There will be a Dog World article (July issue) on rare breeds that features Harriers.

The secretary has been remiss in not mailing a new membership directory. Ideally, we’d like to put it in the “Members Only” section of the website, when/if the web master gets it working. Would like membership feedback on what we might do to make HCA membership more worthwhile. Report of the Treasurer As of April 21, 2012 there was $13,844.93 in the bank ($10,039.37/checking, $3805.56/savings). The treasurer will report on the cost of the Specialty when she gets the checkbook and all the receipts back. Reports of Committees 2012 National Specialty We’ve contacted the Del Valle Kennel Club and they are happy to have our Specialty. The Specialty will be on Saturday, October 20, 2012 in Pleasanton, California. Pleasanton is in the San Francisco Bay Area, northeast of San Jose, California. All three SF Bay Area airports (San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland) are convenient. There are changes since we held our Specialty there in 2002. It is now the Harvest Classic. There are all-breed shows on the Thursday and Friday (Skyline KC) before the Specialty and on the Sunday and Monday after the Specialty. The clubs will work with us on sharing judging expenses if we select a judge they can use. Members have asked about including agility at the Specialty, which would be difficult for a small club such as the HCA. Del Valle offers agility on Sunday and Monday and we could do supported entry for high-scoring Harriers. 2012 Judge Selection Selecting a judge for the 2012 Specialty came up for discussion. Should we use a top vote-getting judge from a previous membership vote, and one in whom the Del Valle KC will share expenses, or should we hold another vote for the 2012 judge?

Motion: (Sharon Manning) Send a ballot to the HCA membership with a slate of three judges for the members to vote and select the 2012 National Specialty Judge. Select the three judges from among the judges who received the most votes in previous voting: Dana Cline, Patricia Laurans, Robert Stein. Ballots must be returned and postmarked by June 1, 2012. Second: (Michele Larsen) Approve: (All) 2011 National Specialty Congratulations and thanks to Wendy McCleery and Michelle Larsen for a splendid 2011 National Specialty. We included Tracking this year, which was a treat for those who competed and those who watched. Future National Specialties - 2013 National Specialty The 2013 National Specialty will be in Snohomish, Washington in the Fall. Sheila Allen is the chairperson. - 2014 National Specialty Michael Walsh and Sharon Manning offered to jointly chair the National Specialty at Purina Farms again. Purina Farms has a new arena that just opened. The Specialty will likely be in the Fall; exact dates are TBD. - 2015/2016 National Specialty The Specialty for one of these years will probably be with the Western Hound Show in Southern California, exact dates TBD. Donna Smiley has offered to be the chairperson for the show. - 2017 National Specialty There was a suggestion to hold the Harrier Specialty with the Beagle Specialty in Aldie, Virginia at the National Beagle Club’s Institute Farm. Kevin Shupenia has volunteered to be the chairperson for the show. Unfinished Business

Kevin Shupenia’s name has been officially submitted to the AKC as the delegate for the Harrier Club. Mike Walsh is attending the Canine Health Conference in August and will report back. New Business Versatility Award There was a discussion about changing the requirements for earning a Versatility Award, which is a club award. The current requirements for a Versatility Certificate (VC) are titles in three of the following disciplines: AKC Conformation (CH), AKC Obedience (CD or higher), AKC Tracking (TD or higher), AKC Agility (NA, NAJ or higher), or HCA Hunting Certificate (EH, EF, ER). (VCX requires 4 titles, VCM requires 5 titles) At the time the requirements were established, Rally didn’t exist. Should Rally be included as a qualifying discipline? Much of the discussion centered around whether Rally is another obedience event or something separate, and continuing to make the Versatility Award a challenge to achieve. Since the AKC considers Rally a separate event, the HCA should considerate it a separate event and include it as a qualifying discipline, with one caveat. The dog must earn a Rally Advanced (RA) title or higher, which is off-lead and more challenging. Motion: (Donna Smiley) Add Rally Advanced (RA) as a qualifying discipline towards earning a Versatility Award from the Harrier Club. Second: Michelle Larsen Approve: All There was additional discussion about creating other club-level awards to encourage and recognize club members who try performance events (e.g., Rally Novice and Beginner Novice) with their Harrier. The Future of Harriers Harriers are always “competing” for one of the last places among AKC breeds. What do we do about the rareness of our breed? How do we make them more popular? How do we find more pet homes?

How can we do a better job of getting the word out about Harriers? Attending “Meet the Breeds” and benched shows is worthwhile where and when we can. Unfortunately, we don’t always have members and dogs to attend all of those opportunities, e.g., the AKC “Meet the Breeds” in NYC. Should we put up a Facebook page? Should we incorporate video on our website and perhaps together such as “everything you can do with afraid to ask”. Can we get more photos (and from our membership?

find out if we can put something a Harrier but were possibly videos)

We’re looking for ideas. Members should send ideas or comments to any member of the HCA Board of Directors. Procedure to Select National Specialty Judges There was a discussion about how to select judges for our National Specialty. We’re doing much better at selecting sites earlier than one year before the show. Motion: (Sharon Manning): After the location of a National Specialty has been selected and as soon as the sponsoring kennel club has selected their judges’ slate, compile a list of all judges from the sponsoring club’s slate who are qualified to judge Harriers (no provisional judges). Send it to the membership for a prompt vote. Second: Michele Larsen Approve: All Harrier Standard Revising the Harrier Standard was brought up. Some discussion. No conclusions. Everybody should read the Standard over again and think about it. Adjournment Motion: (Donna Smiley) Adjourn the meeting Approve: All
