BACK-TO-SCHOOL WELCOME by Beverly Deis The Elementary Principal

The 2008-2009 school year is right around the corner! I will be so excited to be back at school and I hope the children are too. Tentative class lists for the 2008-2009 school year are included in this edition. If your child is not listed, please call the school. New additions to the elementary faculty include: Bridget Pipes, Leatha Pfanmiller, and Alison Carr. Miss Pipes will be the lead teacher for Cub Construction Preschool and Mrs. Pfanmiller will be our K-6 Special Education teacher. Alison Carr will work with Mrs. Hicks, Title I Reading and with Mrs. Pfanmiller in the Special Education department. We will also have a new elementary music teacher. The elementary staff and students will be encouraged to continue the “Panther Pride.” Our focus is for PreK-6 students to be successful and all students can be successful when it comes to “Panther Pride.” Open House will be held on Monday, August 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Please mark your calendar and make every effort to attend open house so you will be able to meet your child’s teacher. Bus transportation information will be available at open house, so be sure to stop by the office for any questions that you might have. I am looking forward to seeing all of the students and parents again! Have a safe and wonderful remainder of the summer and I will see you on August 18 at Polo R-VII Elementary School.

SISK12 Parent Portal Enhance your connection between your children and their education. The Polo School District encourages all parents to, sign up for and use the SIS Parent Portal. The Parent Portal allows you to check your student’s current grades, attendance, lunch balance, and a grade card summary. This allows you to stay current with everything happening with the basics of what your student is doing in school. It also gives you a way to contact your student’s teachers. Sign up forms can be gotten from the offices, if you have already signed up your access is still open. To begin using the Parent Portal, follow these steps: Fill out the Parent Portal Registration form and return it to the school. Already existing accounts are still active and ready to use. Your password will be emailed to the address you provided on the registration form. Go to the Parent Portal web page (Use the Student Records link on the School’s web page, http://polo.k12.mo.us or go to SIS Parent Portal directly at https://sdm.sisk12.com/PO.) Log in. If you have problems or questions about accessing the site, please contact the school where your child is enrolled. NOTE: If your email address changes, be sure to contact the school and let them know so your contact information can be updated. As part of the security procedures, the ONLY way to receive your password is by email. The school office can not give it to you because they do not have access to your password. On the login screen is a link for Forgotten Passwords. Once inside the Portal, you will have access to several different areas of information for each child you have enrolled in the district. Each of these areas is explained below. If you have more than one child enrolled, select which child’s information you wish to view by clicking the Select Student button at the top of the page. To select the information to display, click the Select Data Area button at the top of the page. Normally you will want to view information for the current school year, but if you have a need to view information from a previous school year, use the Change School Year button. On any of the pages, if a teacher’s name is underlined, it means an email address is available for that teacher. Clicking the name will let you send an email to them. Course Schedule Any bulletins from the school district will be available on the left side of the screen and the right side of the screen shows the student’s course schedule. From the schedule, you can access the Homework and Grade Book for each class by clicking the appropriate link. Homework Assignments for the selected class display for a set period of time, determined by the teacher. Grade Book Use the drop-down lists to change the order of the grades or to select a specific term. Click the Update Display button to redisplay the page based on your selections. Attendance This area displays all dates with attendance markings in the selected school year as well as the student’s attendance percentage, and a key for the attendance codes used. Term Grades Use the drop-down lists to view term grades, progress grades, credits, GPAs and transcript information. Lunch Use this page to view the student’s lunch account history. Click Details to view a transaction date in more detail, showing what the student purchased, whether it was charged or a cash purchase, as well as amounts and check numbers. *** PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A CONDENSED VERSION OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PARENT PORTAL. THE FULL VERSION WITH GRAPHICS IS AVAILABLE BY EMAIL OR MAIL BY CONTACTING HENRY HOLT AT POLO HIGH SCHOOL.***

5 Summer 2008

Summer School By: Beverly Deis The Polo R-VII Summer School ended with the presentation of “Destination Celebration.” Hosts Amber Adams, Ashley Adams, and Tabitha Poje welcomed all guests. The audience, traveling in time with Sid Bost and Kylee Eaglen, were able to see highlights from different eras including the 1800’s, 1920’s, 1960’s, 1970’s, and 2008. There was a variety of entertainment including a bear hunt, theme songs from television shows, battle of the bands, and a puppet show. Dances performed included the Charleston, the Monster Mash, the Macarena, and a country line dance. Some of the students created their own costumes and props. Mrs. Deis commends all of the students and staff for their dedication and hard work making the final production a success.

PARENTS AS TEACHERS

OFFERS LITERACY DEVELOPMENT TIPS FOR SCHOOL READINESS

As another school year begins, Parents as Teachers reminds parents that learning to read starts well before kindergarten. According to early childhood specialists, children who know sounds and names of letters before entering kindergarten are 20 times more likely to read simple words by the end of kindergarten. Poor reading skills stay with children throughout their educational careers as they continually fall behind their peers. Literacy development for children begins at birth. Early literacy develops from real-life situations that are meaningful and functional. It is acquired over time from the child’s everyday exposure to reading, speaking, listening, writing and understanding, and children learn best when actively engaged in these components. Here are five tips offered by experts at Parents as Teachers National Center to prepare your child for kindergarten: -From the time your child is born, talk to her often. The sounds of language allow the brain to organize pathways for language learning. -Read to your child every day. Children’s vocabulary increases as they hear more words, further preparing them to be successful upon entering kindergarten. -Actively engage your child in open-ended questions that require conversation, as opposed to yes or no questions. -Give your child many opportunities to solve problems. This gives him the opportunity to learn relationships and strategies needed to solve problems in reading and writing later on. -Sit together as a family at mealtime. This encourages turn-talking, an important skill your child will need when entering kindergarten. For more information on this topic or other child development and parenting information, call and enroll in Parents As Teachers. Parents As Teachers is a free service offered to all families with children birth to kindergarten entry in the Polo R-VII school district.
