GENERAL INFORMATION REGISTRATION We offer students four ways to register for non-credit classes–online, by phone, mail or office visit. If you wish to register by phone, call 865.539.7167. You can register at any time–there are normally no special registration days, unless noted in the course description. Many classes have minimum enrollment requirements, so please register early. The REGISTRATION FORM can be found below.

Persons who participate in CEU designated programs will have a permanent transcript. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS For admission to non-credit courses for continuing education units, an applicant must submit a completed non-credit registration form with payment to Business and Community Services.

CERTIFICATES Upon satisfactory completion of CEU classes, students will be awarded certificates in recognition of their achievement. The cost of the initial certificate is included in the course fee. For duplicate certificates, a fee of $5 will be charged to cover administrative costs.

FEES All enrollment fees must be paid before the beginning of class. The amount for each course is stated in the information regarding each offering. Course fees are subject to change without notice. State employee, senior citizen and disabled fee waiver policies do not apply to non-credit programs. Payment can be made by cash, check, money order, MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express.

BOOKS & SUPPLIES Most courses require textbooks or other instructional supplies. Unless otherwise noted, all materials are included in the cost of the course and are provided to each person at the first class meeting. CLASS CANCELLATION / POSTPONEMENT Business and Community Services reserves the right to cancel, postpone or combine classes and to substitute qualified instructors when necessary.

REFUNDS Money will be refunded ONLY if the class is cancelled by the College or upon notification of the student to withdraw at least two business days prior to the starting date of the class, unless otherwise noted. NO REFUNDS can be made after these dates.

HOLIDAYS Non-credit programs generally adhere to the College holiday schedule. CLOSING DATES The closing date for registration is two working days before the start of class, unless otherwise noted. This ServSafe® food handlers’ course meets the requirements for manager certification in the food service industry. Thomson Prometric Food Safety Management

Learn how to prevent food-borne disease in this course that provides food operators and managers with necessary information. Course topics include HACCP, risk assessment concepts, food-borne diseases and sources of contamination, personal hygiene, safe handling practices and sanitation, and pest control. Tennessee Estate Planning—It’s Not Just Having a Will!

Learn the basics of either knitting or crochet and in the process end up with a beautiful item that you create. This class will cover the elementary techniques of both knitting and crochet. You will decide which skill to concentrate on and be introduced to numerous patterns using simple stitches on sample-sized pieces. Then you’ll choose one of the stitches to create a beautiful, hand-crafted item by the end of the class. Wire Jewelry Design

Utilizing jewelry wire wrapping techniques using sterling silver square wire and various stones, you will discover basic techniques that can be used to create jewelry out of almost any stone or other irregular shaped object. Handgun 201

Focus on using handguns safely, gaining basic concealed carry techniques, and achieving reasonable marksmanship while presenting the pistol from a holster. You will have brief classroom instruction, with the majority of the time spent at the shooting range, and you’ll be better prepared for the Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit Course. You must have basic handgun experience by taking the Pellissippi State Handgun 101 course or from other equivalent training or experience. You must furnish your own gun (preferably a semi-automatic), a minimum of two magazines, 140 rounds of ammunition, and eye and ear protection. The holster should be a durable strong-side belt or inside the waistband model with open top for easy and safe re-holstering. The instructors can give you help with more details. Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit Class

Complete this Tennessee State Handgun Safety Course satisfactorily in order to apply for the state carry permit. Increase your knowledge of handgun function, parts, operation, safety, cleaning, storage, legal responsibilities. You will have a course review, testing and firing range exercises. If your shooting experience is limited the Pellissippi State Handgun 201 course can help prepare you for this course. Firing exercises are at the John Sevier Range on Rifle Range Road for the Hardin Valley class. The location for firing exercises for the Blount County class will be announced. When you complete the safety course satisfactorily, you will receive a certificate to allow you to apply for the state carry permit at your nearest Department of Safety office. Course instructors are NRA and Tennessee certified firearms instructors. NRA Defensive Pistol

Do you want advanced instruction on concealed carry techniques and defensive pistol handling? Focus on using handguns safely, gaining concealed carry techniques, and achieving a reasonable level of marksmanship while presenting the pistol from a holster. You will get classroom and challenging range instruction. This class is for the intermediate student who has basic handgun experience. You must have completed either the Tennessee Carry Permit Course or the Pellissippi Handgun 101 or 201 course, or have similar training or experience. You must furnish your own gun (preferably a semi-automatic), a minimum of two magazines, 175 rounds of ammunition, and eye and ear protection. The holster should be a durable strong-side belt or inside the waistband model with open top for easy and safe re-holstering. The instructors can give you help with more details. Students with satisfactory participation in the classroom activities, and proficiency at the range will be awarded an NRA Certificate of Achievement and a Pellissippi State Certificate of Training and CEUs for having passed the NRA Defensive Pistol Course requirements. MSF Basic RiderCourse®

This course is aimed at beginning riders 15 years and older. This is the Tennessee state-certified licensing Motorcycle Rider Education program. The course provides five hours of classroom work and ten hours of practical riding in a controlled, off-street environment. Course materials are provided including Tennessee Motorcycle Handbook, student workbook and training motorcycles (125cc-350cc street legal). Some scooters are also available and the request for a scooter must be indicated on the registration form. A helmet can be provided if needed. Students must wear DOT approved helmet, eye protection, full-fingered gloves, over-the-ankle footwear

with low heels, long pants (denim or sturdy fabric), and a longsleeved shirt or jacket. A registration form must be completed and students must be registered one week in advance. If a participant is under the age of 18, parent or guardian permission must be obtained in writing. Classes are taught by certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructors who assist participants with proper techniques. Students must pass both a written and a riding evaluation to receive a State Certificate Waiver. A certificate of completion for the course exempts the student from taking the written and riding test when applying for a motorcycle license. Basic RiderCourse® 2—Skills Practice In this skills practice course, emphasis is placed on advanced riding skills and handling emergency situations. Students will have approximately 4½ hours practice with no classroom component and no license waiver tests. Students provide their own motorcycle with license and proof of insurance. The motorcycle must pass a safety inspection, and students must provide personal safety gear (DOT approved helmet, jacket or long sleeved shirt, long pants, over the ankle leather footwear, and approved eye protection). Advanced RiderCourse®

This one-day course is for experienced riders who desire to learn and practice more in-depth riding techniques. Classroom activities use small group discussions and interactive activities to address personal risk management strategies; to discuss options for cornering, braking and swerving; and to improve visual perception to identify collision traps. On-cycle range exercises provide practice in cornering, braking and swerving. There is no skill test in this course. The class is open to all licensed riders no matter what type of motorcycle they ride. Riders must have proof of insurance and bikes must pass a pre-course inspection. Riders must wear proper gear and no passengers are allowed. An MSF completion card will be issued which can be used for insurance discounts. Classroom time is three hours with five hours range time. Three-Wheeled Basic RiderCourse®

This MSF 3-Track Basic RiderCourse® is an entry level, learnto-ride training and education course designed to prepare riders for entry into the complex world of traffic. It consists of classroom and on-vehicle instruction conducted on a paved area away from street traffic. Participants learn fundamental riding skills and safety strategies similar to what is provided in the MSF Basic RiderCourse®, but on a threewheel, three- track vehicle. Street RiderCourse®

For newly licensed riders this course is designed to be a first street riding experience under the supervision and guidance of a Rider Coach. The course is a partial day program that includes classroom activities to improve perception with some practice time on the range to insure basic riding skills. The street course will consist of three different routes of about 45 minutes in length. Riders must provide their own motorcycles, which must pass a safety inspection, and they must have proof of insurance. Coaches will furnish riders with a reflective vest and a radio in order to listen to coaches’ instructions while in route. Class is limited to four students with two coaches. $195

Discover our Appalachian heritage. Learn how much fun it is to play the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer. No prior musical knowledge is necessary for this course. Continue to grow from a beginner mountain dulcimer player. Students who have completed “Beginning Appalachian Dulcimer” should be ready for this course. We learn more about DAD corded melody, explore other tunings, mode structure, timing, dulcimer techniques and tones, cross-picking, playing with capos, chord shapes, names, and their relationship, and generally increase your dulcimer abilities.
