Objectives: • TSWL about the genre of biographies and autobiographies. • TSWBAT define a biography and autobiography. • TSW read biographies on their own for self-selected reading. • TSW read biographical information about famous Americans from the past and the present and use analyze them to sort people into groups based on their own criteria. Key Vocabulary: • Non-fiction • Biography • Autobiography Introduction: (Lesson One) Check prior knowledge about biographies; discuss famous Americans the students learn about and how their teachers teach about them. Do they use books? Are those books possibly biographies? Use Kidspiration venn diagram to compare/contrast biography and autobiography and address key points: • A biography/autobiography is non-fiction. • A biography/autobiography is a book about a person’s life. • Though we most often read biographies in school about people who have died, biographies/autobiographies can be about people who are alive or dead. • Biographies and autobiographies are found in the same section of the library. • The difference between the two are that an autobiography is written by a person about themselves, and biographies are written by one person about another. Station Rotations: (Lessons two through four) • Review vocabulary terms • Discuss in detail directions for stations • Model each station briefly • Explain behavioral expectations • Divide students into groups and send them to their stations Stations Station One – Autobiography Station Students will complete an autobiography. Station Two- Biography Sort Working in a group the students will each read a short biography of a famous American and then sort them based on similarities they find. Students will construct their own criteria for the sort. The criteria they cannot use are: race, living and dead, and gender.
