Expectations and Keys to success in Biology 12         

1. Take responsibility for your learning. i) Attendance: 1 or 2 topics are covered every class. Students who fall behind in their attendance have a strong tendency to fall behind in their grades and in most cases never regain success. If you are absent for any reason, arrange with a “study partner” to get missing notes and homework. You may also go to mrsollek.weebly.com where class notes will be posted on a daily basis. Tests/Quizzes missed will be written on the DAY of your return, no excuses. Lates will affect your effort grade and could lower your quiz mark. ii) Seek extra help/study group: There are many available resources to help you succeed. All students will be assigned to a study group for in-class group study and review. Discussing/teaching others will help you with your understanding. http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/search Numerous other websites will help you prepare for tests (e.g. www.quizmebc.ca) Tutorials: If you don’t understand a topic or have questions, I am available Mondays and Wednesdays at lunch. If these times do not work for you, please arrange, with me, a suitable meeting time. Students requiring additional supports may be required to attend academic intervention.

iii) Understanding and Retaining information Not many students have the ability to remember information the first time. Nightly review of class work is necessary. Many concepts require revision 3 or 4 times before it is fully understood. (a minimum 1 hour of home studies per day will likely be necessary) iv) Time management Use class time efficiently. It is imperative that students use class time to take notes, review notes, work on assignments and do sample problems/questions to prepare for tests. This course requires the student to do independent reading and note taking from the text. 2. Past Studies: In my experience, students with grades below the recommended 67% in Science 10 and/or Biology 11 struggle in this course and must work extremely hard to keep up and succeed. It is very helpful to have completed or be concurrently taking Chemistry 11. 3. Course Load: Students of Biology 12 learn an incredible amount of information. Students will have to read and take notes daily, learn hundreds of new vocabulary, and understand complex concepts. Biology does tend to be memory intensive. However, students must be able to comprehend concepts and connect them to other topics discussed earlier in the course or to future topics discussed later in the course. - I want biology to be an enjoyable, positive learning experience for all students so ask questions, volunteer answers, listen carefully to all instructions, work cooperatively with all students, keep a well organized binder, keep track of all assignments, and always try to do your best.

***What you put into this course will be what you will get back in return.*** Students and Parents will also be able to check the class website at mrsollek.weebly.com  “Biology 12” tab for updates on what is happening in our class: Unit of study, assignments, labs, and tests.
