BIOSTRATIGRAPHY OF THE LATE CRETACEOUS-EARLY TERTIARY SUCCESSION OF MDT SECTION, DAKHLA OASES, WESTERN DESERT, Egypt BY' M. Faris GeologY' Department, FacultY' of Science, Tanta UniversitY'. Tanta, Egypt. ABSTRACT This article deals mainly with the study of calcareous nannofossils and planktonic f or sm~ ni f e r s of the Mae s t richt i anPaleocene interval in Mut section, DakhlaOases. Micropaleontologic -exa m1nation or the succession has revealed four oalcareous nannofossil biozones in the Maestrichtian: Quadrum trifidum, Arlit~elskiella Cytbiformts,Lithrathidites quadratus and NephrO us tre~ens. heir relevant p Briktoriic foramiDlferal zones are: Globo:runcana ~yPt1aca, G. gansseri and AbathD!halus maroensls. The latestllSestrlchTIanearliest ~ian se~ent seems to be missing and no lithological changes were observed at the Cretaceous - Tertiaryboundar)". The Paleocene is characterized by three calcareous nannofossil zones: Oruciplacolithus tennis (NP2), Ohiasmolithus danicus (liP), Blli~solithus macellus (NP4) and also be four planktonic for am1 n 1 er81 zones: Morozovella pseudobulloides~ M. trinidadensis, M. uncinata and tl4. angulata. The Diiriian/ Thanetian boundar)"-rs placed at the-top of the Morozovella uncin?ta zone and lies within the Ellipsolithus macellus zone liP4). INTRODUCTION Within the past decades, the southern Oasis of the Western Desert of Egypt (Kharga, Dakhla, Farafra and Bahryia Oases) has attracted the attention of many geologists prospecting for petroleum, ground water, iron ores and phosphate deposits. The sedimentary- succession of those area ranges in age from the upper Cretaceous to Eocene which is covered
