Dear Friends: As the events of our Golden Jubilee Year draw to their close, we have much to look forward to in the future. With the opening of the Youth and the Adult Ministries Centers we see that the thrust of our parish is indeed multigenerational! We always look forward never forgetting our past. We are a diverse people with many needs of which age, language and culture are just a small portion of the wonderful challenges which we face. Parish programs, both the Mother Church and the Mission, are constantly in a state of growth. Each new challenge also offers a greater sense of communal life and many opportunities for expanded ministries. This handbook is an exercise in hope! It is a way to view the parish and mission communities with an invitation to deeper involvement. This Parish Ministry Handbook is but a glimpse of our parish family. It only expresses some of our needs. I hope that you will find that “special ministry” of which you might say, “I can do that!” I promise that your involvement in the ministries of this parish family will deepen your relationship with God and your commitment to the work of building the Kingdom of God! Please consider this Parish Ministries Handbook as my formal invitation for you to become more actively involved in the life of your parish family! LITURGICAL MINISTRIES Involvement in liturgical ministry gives us purpose and keeps us on the right path as we endeavor to fulfill our mission to bring all people closer to God. Listed below are many opportunities for involvement in the Liturgical Life of Blessed Sacrament Church. ADORATION Contact: Lisa Weis (352)394-3562, ext. 107, [email protected] C " ome to me all of you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will refresh you."(Mt. 11:28) Eucharistic Adoration is simply our response to Jesus' love for us, whereby each of us is willing to spend a quiet holy hour of prayer in His Eucharistic Presence once a week on a regular basis. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament takes place Tuesday 9:00am-8:00pm in the Chapel. Adoracion. These gifts enable the minister to build up the Body of Christ. In their welcome and 13

Christ-like attitude, ministers of hospitality ensure that the faithful see and experience the love of Christ. Ministros de Hospitalidad (Ujieres). MINISTRY TO THE SICK & SHUT-IN Contact: Gerry Crocker (352)243-8177 Marilyn Blevins (352)243-7448 This ministry is comprised of caring and prayerful parishioners, committed to bringing the Body of Christ and the Word of God to those unable to join their faith community at the Table of the Lord. They visit local nursing homes, assisted living centers, the hospital, homes of the sick and shut-in, and the Mike Conley Hospice House by scheduled weekly arrangement. Ministers to the Sick continue their educational and spiritual enrichment by participating in diocesan presentations and parish programs to enhance relations with God as well as those entrusted to the ministers spiritual care. Ministerio de los Enfermos e Impedidos. Este ministerio se compone de feligreses cariñosos y orantes, comprometidos a llevar el Cuerpo de Cristo y la Palabra de Dios a aquellos que no pueden unirse a su comunidad de fe en la Mesa del Señor. Ellos visitan los asilos de ancianos locales, centros de vida asistida, el hospital, los hogares de los enfermos e impedidos, y la Casa de Hospicio Mike Conley cual tiene una cita semanal programada. MUSIC MINISTRY Contact: Bryan Hayes (352)394-3562, ext. 112, [email protected] The music ministry at Blessed Sacrament serves the parish family to help enable full, conscious and active participation in liturgical celebrations. (The Lord gives to all of us.) Come join any of our wonderful Music Ministries. Adult Choir: The adult choir is comprised of volunteer members who give of their time and talents to glorify God through the ministry of music. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm until 8:00pm in the church. The Adult Choir usually sings at the 10:00 am Mass on Sundays and at other Holy Days and special events including diocesan choir festivals. Children’s Choir: The Children’s Choir program is committed to fostering excellent musicianship, knowledgeable participation in liturgy and an active prayer life. This includes ongoing music theory, ear training and sight singing; fundamentals of liturgy and involvement in the prayer life of the community. Children in grades 2-5 are invited to be part of this ministry. Cantor Program: The Cantor Ministry is designed to help lead the members of our congregation in prayer through song. This group meets at various times throughout the year to rehearse music for the upcoming liturgical season. Contemporary Ensemble: The contemporary ensembles sing and play at the 12:00pm and 5:00pm liturgies each Sunday. Accompanied by piano and other instruments, the ensemble sings moderately challenging two-, three-, and four-part music. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings. 14

Membership in the ensemble is open to all interested singers and instrumentalists after an audition. Filipino Choir: Bound by their Catholic faith and their love of singing, this ensemble leads music during our monthly Filipino Mass. Masses are the first Friday of every month in the Day Chapel. Funeral Choir: The Funeral Choir is comprised of volunteer men and women who want to share their musical talents by providing beautiful music for those who are grieving over the death of a loved one. This ensemble sings at funerals and rehearses as needed. Handbell Choir: This ensemble is comprised of volunteer men and women who prepare a wide variety of bell literature and share their love of music for the glory of God. Although music reading ability is not required, it is helpful. They play at various Masses throughout the year. Hispanic Choir: This dynamic choir joyfully leads our Spanish language liturgies in traditional and contemporary music from various Hispanic cultures. Instrumentalists: Instrumentalists add beauty and color to our music ministry. If you play flute, clarinet, trumpet or other instruments, and want to play at Mass, please contact the Music Office. Schola Cantorum: The BSCC Schola is a small ensemble of singers that sings works from all genres of church music. The Schola sings at Midnight Mass, Easter Vigil, and other liturgies throughout the year. If you are interested in auditioning, please call the music office. Seasonal Choir: These individuals join the adult choir in preparation for Christmas and Easter. Youth Choir: The youth in our Parish (grades 6-12) are invited to participate in our Youth Choir. The group prepares a variety of music from traditional to contemporary and leads the assembly at various Masses throughout the year. SACRISTANS Contact: Lisa Weis (352)394-3562, ext. 107, [email protected] The role of Sacristan is a privileged ministry requiring persons who are regular communicants, dedicated to the liturgy and zealous in their commitment to fostering the spiritual growth of our parish community. Sacristy related chores are many and are accomplished almost entirely by volunteers who are responsible for the preparation of liturgical materials before each celebration of mass. Sacristanes. El papel de Sacristán es un ministerio privilegiado que exige a las personas que son comulgantes regulares, dedicados a la liturgia y celosos en su compromiso de fomentar el crecimiento espiritual de nuestra comunidad parroquial. Cromwell Cabrisos (352)394-3562, ext. 102, [email protected] Religious education and self-enrichment for adults on various subjects is available on a periodic schedule throughout the year. The schedule is published in the Sunday bulletin, on the Parish website (www.mybscc.org) and may also be obtained by calling the Parish office. Catholics who are seeking to complete the Sacrament of Confirmation should call Fr. Cromwell or Chris Stalnaker in the parish office for details, dates and procedures. You will need a copy of your Baptismal certificate. Formacion De Adultos. La educación religiosa y el auto-enriquecimiento para adultos sobre diversos temas está disponible periódicamente durante el año. P.R.E.P. is designed to instill a deep sense of the message revealed by God, of fellowship in the life of the Holy Spirit, and of service to the entire community as our children and youth are prepared to receive the sacraments of our faith. P.R.E.P. meets from early September until mid-May. It includes Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade. If you would like further information or if you are interested in volunteering to help in this ministry, please call. Catechists. The catechist must have a desire to share the Good News with children of all ages. Good communication skills are important. Previous experience is not necessary although familiarity with Scripture and a basic understanding of Catholic doctrine would be most beneficial. Group and individual orientation and basic training is provided on campus by the Director of Religious Education. Ongoing Certification courses are provided throughout the year by the Diocese of Orlando. Children’s Liturgy of the Word. This is a safe environment for teens to gather and be a part of the greater community. Whether it’s being part of the yearly summer mission, peer leader, service opportunities, fun “Hang-Out” night, or just being part of the group, Blessed Sacrament’s Youth Ministry has something for teens. Events are scheduled almost every month to build the youth in their Catholic Faith and, of course, to have fun! As part of service opportunities, the Youth Ministry serves the parish community in numerous ways. Check on line at mybscc.org to get the latest events happening. The Bridge. Middle School and High School Teens meet every Sunday night from September through mid-May, 6:00pm to 6:30pm. The Gathering. High School Teens meet from 6:30pm to 8:00pm with a unique topic to discuss each session. This is for High School teens who have been confirmed and are looking to continue on with their journey. The class is set in a relaxed environment with the purpose to make all feel welcome. Wednesday Youth Bible Sharing. Grades 9 through 12 meet in John Bosco Hall from 6:00pm to 7:00pm to find unique ways of breaking open the Word of God. It’s always positive and new and everyone brings a snack to share. Wednesday Peer Ministry. Teens and Young Adults work together learning leadership skills and a deeper meaning to their faith with the goal to pass on their Catholic heritage to the rest of the Youth Group. They design ways to get the “Word” across and make the Youth Group their own. They meet in John Bosco Hall from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. 1st Friday Night Teens. Grades 9 through 12 meet in John Bosco Hall from 7:00pm to 9:00pm for a fun time in a safe place to hang out with other teens with snacks, movies, and games. 2nd Friday Night Teens. Volunteers are needed who have a little spare time to make these garments and can sew a simple straight seam and embroider by hand or by machine. Directions are available. Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer in which we experience God's presence within us. The source of Centering Prayer, as in all methods leading to contemplative prayer, is the Indwelling Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The focus of Centering Prayer is the deepening of our relationship with the living Christ. The benefits of silent prayer include experiencing deep peace and innermost healing that will carry over in our daily life. The effects of Centering Prayer are ecclesial, as the prayer tends to build communities of faith and bond the members together in mutual friendship and love. Our group sessions include the sharing of a period of Silent Centering Prayer, followed by exchange, discussion and book study. Tuesday is known as “Catholic Tuesday” among the inmates. Bible Study, using the Great Adventure Time Line (Salvation History), is a weekly activity from 9:00am to 11:00am. A Eucharistic service is done on Tuesday between 1:00pm and 3:30pm. Once a month, Mass is celebrated at the prison by one of the priests in our parish. RCIA preparations are given to those who wish to receive the sacraments or want to become a Catholic. Spiritual guidance and counseling are also given. PARISH COMMITTEES DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE Contact: Jim Weis (352)242-4361 The Development Committee serves as an advisory body to the pastor and the Finance Committee in the long range planning and development of parish plant and facilities. Members of the Development Committee are selected by the pastor in consultation with the Finance Committee and are appointed on the basis of their expertise in the areas related to fundraising, plant development, engineering, architectural design, and finances. The Development Committee receives support and guidance from the Diocesan Stewardship & Development Office as well as the Office for Building Planning, and Construction. Mandated by canon law, parish finance councils, like parish pastoral councils, are consultative bodies: Each parish is to have a Finance Council which is regulated by universal law as well as by norms issued by the diocesan bishop; in this council the Christian faithful, selected according to the same norms, aid the pastor in the administration of parish goods. Members of the Finance Council are appointed by the pastor on the basis of their expertise in matters related to accounting and finance, investment management, fundraising/development, budget, engineering, and law. The three-to-five-member Finance Council receives support and guidance from the diocesan Department of Finance. The Parish Finance Committee and the Parish Pastoral Council function interdependently; it is essential that they communicate with one another in furthering the parish mission. Our recently offered VENTURE Program (Comprised of "aging-out" Boy Scouts, consist of youth from fourteen to age 21, both males and females. Neither needs to have prior experience in a scouting program of any kind, just a love for adventure, going places, seeing rare sights, and having fun. Boy Scouts begin at 11 years old, in the 6th grade and up. Boy Scouts can sign up in the spring of their fifth grade year to attend summer camp before entering the sixth grade. UGANDAN MISSION Since August 2006, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Clermont Florida has worked on a number of charitable projects in Uganda. Seven shallow water wells have been constructed in seven different villages giving many more people access to fresh and clean water. It costs approximately $4,000 to construct a water well and attach a hand pump. Many more communities still have need for clean water. You can consider having a shallow water well constructed for people in Uganda in your name or in that of your family or loved one. It is like giving life. Water is life! Our Lady of the Sick, Kambaala Health Unit III, has now been expanded with the addition of the Mothers and Women’s Wing. In this new building, there is a large delivery room, an operating theatre, a recovery room, a general ward that can hold up 10 beds, and an assembly room for workshops, talks and seminars. When we have all the tools and equipment in place, this facility will help us to take better care of all women, mothers, and children. There is still need for a power generator, theatre and surgical tools, and beds and side-bed equipment. An ambulance would be so important to have! As a lecturer and a member of the formation staff at St. Mbaaga’s Major Seminary, Ggaba, I speak for the vocations to the priesthood in the Church. We are still blessed in Uganda with so many young men who want to become priests. The seminary where I teach in Uganda has produced over 100 priests and two bishops since 1983. Some of these young men that have become priests have been sponsored by individuals and families at Blessed Sacrament Church. It costs $400 to help sponsor a seminarian for a year. It takes 8 years for one to make it to the priesthood through study and formation. Sponsoring a seminarian to become a priest is an act of helping in the Lord’s vineyard where the harvest is abundant but laborers are few. St. Kizito Grade (Primary) School, across from Kambaala Health Unit, has only 8 classrooms for over 700 children from grade one to grade seven. These classrooms are overcrowded with not enough desks and seats for everyone. Some students sit on the dirt floor. We need to build more classrooms and provide chairs and desks. Education is vital to transform the life of the many children in Kambaala. We hope we can do it in Kambaala with a little more help. It costs approximately $12,000 to build and furnish a classroom. THE HISTORY OF BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH As early as 1910, Catholic families gathered at various homes in Minneola and Father Fox traveled from Orlando to Minneola, a day's journey, to celebrate Mass in the homes of the Lynch, DyFrene and Frisz families. A temporary altar was set up in the various homes and when the service was complete, breakfast was served. For the next several years, Wilfred and Marie Frisz remained in the Clermont area and played a major role in the development of what was to become Blessed Sacrament Church. The Frisz family purchased a small bus and provided transportation to local Catholic families who wished to travel to Eustis or Fruitland Park for Sunday Mass. Obviously a more permanent place of worship was needed and Mr. Charles Pool donated four lots on Lake Avenue in Clermont. Finally, in 1933, a mission church was constructed on this site. With the completion of a small, wooden frame church, fifty Catholic families could now have a more permanent house of worship. The first Mass was offered on Christmas Day, 1933. The year 1961 brought great changes to the Catholic community in Clermont. Our “Mission” was elevated to the status of a “Parish” and the Reverend Hugh Keane was assigned as our first Pastor. The following year, Fr. Keane began a fund raising campaign to build a new church on the Twelfth Street property which had been purchased by the Reverend Joseph Daly in 1956. In 1963, a new church was blessed on Twelfth Street. This second Church building is now known as Saint John Bosco Hall. In 1969, the Reverend Fabian Gimeno became the second Pastor and assumed the responsibilities of eliminating a large debt, dating back to 1963. When the debt was paid, the interior of the Twelfth Street Church was renovated, seating capacity was doubled, and new pews and stained-glass windows were added. Fr. Fabian also oversaw the construction of the rectory, the parish hall, the educational buildings and the church towers with the carillon. These buildings are still in use today, many for the same purpose. The rectory is now the parish offices. Originally a part of the Diocese of Saint Augustine, on June 18, 1968, Pope Paul VI formed the Diocese of Orlando and Blessed Sacrament parish became a part of the Diocese of Orlando under the Most Reverend William Borders, first Bishop of Orlando and later Archbishop of Baltimore. Archbishop Borders was succeeded by the Most Reverend Thomas Grady, the second Bishop of Orlando in 1974. In 1982, the Reverend Jose Mena became third Pastor of Blessed Sacrament. In the 1980s, the church community was growing rapidly, and Fr. Mena realized the eventual need for yet a new and larger church. He began putting away funds for this purpose. Fr. Mena retired in 1994, and the Very Reverend Paige Blakely was appointed as parochial administrator until the Most Reverend Norbert Dorsey, third Bishop of Orlando, appointed the Reverend Andrew Wawrzycki as our fourth Pastor. Fr. Andy continued planning for a new and larger church. With the approval of the Diocesan Finance and Building Communities and the completion of a successful parish fund drive, construction on the present church began in 2000. With Fr. Andy's retirement in 2001, Bishop Dorsey appointed the Reverend Christopher Hoffmann as fifth Pastor in August of that year. On December 7, 2001, Fr. Chris celebrated the first Mass in the new church on the Vigil of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The dream of thousands of people had finally been realized. Following Fr. Chris' transfer, the Reverend Mark Wegg was appointed as the sixth Pastor in November 2003. Fr. Mark was assisted by Father Tito Rojas as the first “associate pastor” of the parish. Upon Father Tito’s departure, additional associates were appointed and the parish welcomed Fathers Cromwell Cabrisos and Raul Valdez. Growth was so great that in 2007, the parish community of Saint Faustina was broken off from the southern end of Blessed Sacrament parish in the area known as “4 37

Corners” with the Reverend Stephen Phillips appointed as its first and founding Pastor. In January 2008, the Very Reverend Robert Webster was appointed as the seventh Pastor of Blessed Sacrament. Upon arrival, Fr. Bob was tasked with the physical construction of the Mission Church of Santo Toribio Romo in Mascotte which would serve the needs of the Catholic Community to the west of the Parish as well as the Diocesan-wide Alive in Christ Campaign to insure the future growth of the parish and diocese. The first Mass celebrated in the Mission of Santo Toribio Romo occurred on Christmas Eve, 2008, 47 years to the day of which Blessed Sacrament became a Mission parish! This building was blessed by the Most Reverend Thomas Wenski, fourth Bishop of Orlando, on February 15, 2009. The Mission presently serves the needs of the migrant Mexican Community and other Hispanic groups, and will soon expand to include Mass in English to touch the lives of many un-churched in that part of the parish. On July 13, 2009, Fr. Bob blessed the new facility for “Outward Sign,” a parish outreach to the poor and needy located on Citrus Tower Blvd. This facility houses a parish outreach, The Best Little Thrift Shop in Town, and offices of many helping agencies. The Knights of Columbus operate a Food Pantry from this location as well. In June of 2010, Father Raul departed the parish to assume responsibilities at San Jose Mission in Barberville and Saint Peter Church in DeLand. Father Augusto Cadavid came to Blessed Sacrament in September 2011 as associate pastor. In the interim time, Father Jesus Tovar served briefly in the parish community. The diocesan and parish-wide “Alive in Christ” Campaign, which began in 2009, enabled the parish to purchase an apartment complex on 12th Street directly across from the parish campus. The purchase of this property was made in June of 2011 and work is anticipated to begin on the transformation of the two buildings in January of 2012 into a Youth Center and a Ministries Building. “Building Breaking” ceremonies, to be presided over by the Most Reverend John Noonan, Fifth Bishop of Orlando, are to take place on Saturday, January 14, 2012 following a Mass of Thanksgiving to begin our Jubilee Year celebrating our 50 years as a parish family. After a wonderful family-centered jubilee year which included activities which draw us back 50 years to the 1960s, the completion of the Youth Center and the Adult Ministries building became the priority. The youth of the parish were able to occupy their new building at Christmas, 2012. The Adult Ministries Building is slated for occupancy in January 2013. “The Catholic Neighborhood Associations,” groupings of Catholics who live in proximity to each other, has become a goal of the “Year of faith” proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI for the calendar year 2013. These small Catholic communities, spread now into 14 geographical areas of the parish, gather monthly for prayer, fellowship and communal support.

In 1958, the southern half of the state was erected as the Diocese of Miami. The Diocese of Orlando was established on June 18, 1968 and consisted of fifty parishes and served 128,000 Catholics. Today it includes 73 parishes, 10 missions, and 37 schools spread over the nine counties of Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Marion, Lake, Volusia, Brevard, Polk, and Sumter. Orlando’s first bishop was William D. Borders who was installed on June 14, 1968. Bishop Border’s achievements included establishing parish councils, parish education boards, participation of the laity as extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, a Sisters’ Council, a migrant ministry apostolate staffed by full-time personnel, and a campus ministry program. Succeeding Bishop Borders was Bishop Thomas J. Grady, installed on December 16, 1974. He established eighteen new parishes, a tourism ministry, San Pedro Center -- a centrally-located spiritual life center, a sister diocese in the Dominican Republic; and, he encouraged the greater participation of women in the work of the Church. The third Bishop of Orlando, Norbert M. Dorsey, was installed on May 25, 1990. Under Bishop Dorsey’s leadership, the diocese continued to add parishes and schools, as well as expand the ministry to the growing Hispanic community through establishing Radio Paz and health clinics for migrant and farm workers. Bishop Dorsey and Bishop Grady worked together on two projects: the establishment of Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine, a church built in the midst of tourism, for visitors to attend Mass and pray; and, Bishop Grady Villas, a residential community for adults whose primary diagnosis is mental retardation. The Most Reverend Thomas G. Wenski became the Fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Orlando on November 13, 2004 after serving as the Coadjutor to Bishop Dorsey. Bishop Wenski, a native Floridian from Lake Worth in the Archdiocese of Miami brought to the diocese a unique (and sometime controversial) record of political and economic activism on behalf of immigrants and the poor. He is an avid writer portraying the struggles of immigrants and migrant workers and has been published in both Catholic and secular publications. On June 1, 2010 he was installed as the Fourth Archbishop of Miami. On October 23, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed the Most Reverend John Noonan as the Fifth Bishop of Orlando. Bishop Noonan was installed on December 16, 2010 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Queen of the Universe in Orlando, the 36th anniversary of the Installation of Bishop Grady. Bishop Noonan, a native of Ireland, had previously been Auxiliary Bishop of Miami and Rector of Saint John Vianney Seminary in Miami.
