MESSAGE FROM THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN Welcome to the 8th annual Celebration of SFU Authors hosted by the SFU Library. At this event we recognize SFU faculty, staff, students and alumni who have published a book or book chapter during 2014. This year we celebrate 149 works by 123 authors, covering a wide range of topics, interests, and forms. The impressive list of titles included here reflects the scope of research, scholarship and creativity at SFU. We are delighted to have a role in highlighting this achievement to the university and the broader community. Although the university library today is about much more than books, books are still central to our mission. It is our pleasure to congratulate and recognize these SFU authors today.

Gwen Bird University Librarian & Dean of Libraries

The list comprises of publications by SFU students, staff, alumni and current and retired faculty from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014. We regret any discrepancies or omissions.

ABOUT THE COVER IMAGE

Photo: Letterpress block type from the SFU Books Arts Studio

The Library’s Books Arts Studio (Room 2021) will enable study of the many aspects of book arts. It will begin with letterpress printing. The room currently has Westman & Baker and Pearl presses, and is soon to have a Challenge proof press. There is also a good selection of lead type and some wood type—as featured in the graphic elements of today’s program—as well as all the equipment necessary for printing. Letterpress printing will provide an introduction to bibliographic studies, the study of paper, typography, illustrative processes, bindings, and more. This new studio will be a center for education and activities aimed at keeping the passion for books, book making, and print culture alive in the digital age.
