Research and Development

Innovation is a part of Bosch’s DNA. Worldwide in 2013, the company invested $6 billion in R&D, with nearly half of that expenditure focused on technologies that conserve resources and protect the environment. In 2013, Bosch globally applied for nearly 5,000 patents – an average of 20 patents per working day. More than 2,000 Bosch associates are dedicated to R&D in the region.

Since 1999, the Bosch Research and Technology Center North America has focused on topics including application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) design and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology; energy conversion and energy storage technologies, modeling simulation and controls; wireless and Internet technologies; algorithms for robotics, autonomous systems and data mining; and user-interaction technologies. These areas are under exploration by Bosch research engineers in close collaboration with partners at leading U.S. universities, industry partners and other worldwide Bosch units. In 2013, the Bosch Energy Research Network (BERN) awarded seven new, two-year grants totaling $885,000 to researchers from five universities. BERN is an eight-year program to promote energy research and education, build relationships with top

U.S. university faculty researching energy topics and attract the best engineering talent to Bosch. Since its inception in 2010, BERN has awarded 14 two-year grants totaling $3 million and supported more than 60 student internships at various Bosch locations in the U.S. Bosch received a nearly $4 million, three-year U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) grant to develop advanced battery management and control software to improve the capacity, safety and charge rate of electric vehicle batteries. The goal of the project is to maximize battery performance to achieve a 30 percent increase in available capacity while reducing manufacturing costs by 25 percent.

Bosch sponsors 13 FIRST® Robotics teams in the U.S., providing financial support and mentoring to more than 500 students in four states. Pictured: The Bosch-sponsored Plymouth-Canton (Michigan) FIRST Robotics Team 862 finished in the top four at the FIRST world championship in 2013.

Bosch continues its efforts to advance STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education at all levels. The Bosch Community Fund (BCF), a U.S.-based foundation that awards grants to various 501(c)(3) organizations, is one primary avenue of STEM support. In Charlotte, North Carolina, BCF supported a summer STEMersion program to help local teachers connect science and math curriculums to industry and jobs. At the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon, Bosch sponsored six university teams, providing funding and products as they competed in a sustainable home-building contest. At the event, BCF granted $200,000 to the Discovery Science Center to help educate students, assist teachers and increase public understanding of science, math and technology through interactive exhibits and programs focusing on sustainability.

Bosch’s Packaging Technology division collaborated with the State of Wisconsin and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College to customize an apprenticeship program. The electro-mechanic apprenticeship is the first of its kind in the state and is now considered a new trade in Wisconsin. At the apprenticeship’s end, the participant receives an associate’s degree in technical studies, a technical diploma and a State of Wisconsin Certificate of Apprenticeship, commonly known as a journeyman card. BCF worked in conjunction with 13 Bosch site communities to provide charitable gifts totaling more than $800,000 in 2013. This included not only support of STEM, but environmental initiatives such as a composting project in Charleston County (South Carolina) schools and conservation benchmarking for the One D Scorecard in Detroit.
