Maluku 2 No 4, Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia 80113 Ph -0361 7915353 Email: [email protected] South 08’39.947 East 115’12.870 Brief History of Royal Enfield in England,India and Indonesia In 1881 Townsend Cycle Company of England introduced its first Bicycle branded as Enfield after the town in England the company was based in. Later the company changed its name and became known by the name Royal Enfield Motors and produced its first production motorcycle in 1901, continuing from then to produce a varied line of small and big cc bikes for the local English market as well as for the world market. Royal Enfield motorcycles soon became respected for their reliability, sturdiness and ground braking innovations for motor cycles that were soon copied by other manufacturers. In 1949 Royal Enfield Motors won the contract over 20 other leading motorcycle manufacturers to provide the Indian Army with a motorcycle for use as a border patrol vehicle for an ongoing conflict they were having with Pakistan. This motorcycle was the Royal Enfield Bullet 350cc and it proved so successful for this purpose that in 1955 the Indian government decided to invite Royal Enfield Motors to build a factory in Madras (Chennai) India for production of motorcycles not only for the Military but for the National Police and civilian market and to this day Royal Enfield continues to provide for this market. Also in 1949 Indonesia’s first President, Ir. Soekarno chose Royal Enfield Motors as the contractor to provide the 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet, however not for the Military but for the Information Ministry as he also was aware of Royal Enfields proven track record making them ideal for the grueling geographical conditions of Indonesia. Hundreds were imported and used by the Ministry to spread the news of the new freedom from the Dutch and English rule. To let the Indonesian people know that Royal Enfield Motorcycles still exists here complete with its unique history and link that it holds with Indonesia as ‘a legend untouched by time’, we established in January 2001 in Jakarta as the importer for new and legal “on the road” Royal Enfield Motorcycles as well as original Spare Parts

and Service, second only to Harley Davidson in importing big motorcycles into Indonesia. In 2007 we have moved to Bali and we have also started the Royal Enfield Bali Owners Klub. Bringing International awareness to the secret of Indonesia’s classic bike treasures as well as Bali having the best roads in Asia to enjoy classic bike riding. Un be known to most people; Indonesia is the 3rd biggest motorcycle market in the world outside of China and India; a developing nation with an all year round motorcycle riding climate. The vast majority of consumers here cannot afford a car for his main form of transport or the roads are just not practical for a car. This has been the situation in Indonesia that all consumers have faced going back to the start of motorized transport and Dutch Colonization where the Dutch imported what turned out to be the largest collection of English motorcycles in South East Asia pre 1940, motorcycles became the preferred fast transport on poorly maintained Colonial Dutch roadway infrastructure. Indonesia is unique in the world where almost all citizens have in the past or are still using daily some form of motorcycle transport. Thus all people have empathy for motorcycles especially the ‘big’ classic bikes. Why because the importation of big bikes in Indonesia above 200cc were banned from 1967 to 2001, this left the big bike community (mostly British marque’s and European marque’s ), owned by people from all walks of life in a kind of limbo where due to no local dealers and spare parts, they could only keep their old bikes on the road using there own ingenuity, improvisation, initiative combined with the skills of local mechanics, machinists and artisans. This created a respected fanatical classic bike enthusiasts who will go to all extremes to keep his bike running. So to this day big bikes are still a rarity and they create a lot of interest within the community especially what is known as “Klassic motors or Motor tua”. Because of Indonesia being a closed market for so many years for big bikes, and the amazing story untold about how these classic bikes found there way to Indonesia and how they are treasured and maintained, and run on a daily basis is a story waiting to be told. The closest comparison is with President Castro’s Cuba pre 1962 US embargo. All things American especially cars were imported and with the embargo in 1962 preventing imports the Cubans still maintained there old classic American cars with a passion despite the fact they did not have spare parts. With the classic bikes Indonesia fell into a similar situation where the ban on importing big bikes in 1967 by President Soeharto made it almost impossible to find new spare parts. So the owners with the same passion as with the Cubans maintaining their cars produced an array of ingenuity, improvisation and craftsmanship beyond the imagination of most westerners to keep these bikes going to this day. Internationally as in Indonesia the classic bike following is thriving however the story of Indonesia’s enforced embargo and its good news story of how they have managed to keep the classic bikes alive here is still a secret only known by a small circle of foreign collectors who make there way to Indonesia each year to buy and export these classic bikes back to their own country only to sell at high price’s to unknowing buyers who don’t understand the bikes passed link with Indonesia. Our intention through our international membership of the REBOK is to open the flood gates to let the secret out and to tap into the world of the classic bikers internationally to tell the story of Indonesia classic bike secret treasures leading to positive publicity about Indonesia and hence more tourism opportunities. An exotic location with the best roads in Asia to ride classic bikes; promoting global friendship and cooperation with the abundance of classic bikes of the many marques is

an internationally worthy story waiting to be told, and with the passion of the owners and skills of local craftsman to keep these bikes on the road will put a smile on the face of all who participate and become a member. With the community curiosity in Indonesia gathering in appreciating restorations in general from houses to cars and of making the old new again and with the abundant supply of classic bikes in Bali and Indonesia as well as mechanics, owners, clubs, collectors who have this sport/hobby, R.E.B.O.K is in a position to be able to harness this empathy and curiosity in Bali in a way that shows the positive energy, passion and skill of the Balinese as well as other Indonesian owners, mechanics, painters and artisans in making something from the past representing Indonesian and English history come alive again. The classic bike community in Indonesia is widespread with many clubs, collectors and Independent owners. We will tap into this resource below with classic British, American, European motorcycles from the forgotten era… models no longer in production… such as… BSA, NORTON, MATCHLESS, ARIEL, SUNBEAM, BMW, VELLOCETTE, AJS, BROUGH SUPERIOR, VINCENT, DOUGLAS, JAP, JAMES, INDIAN, HARLEY DAVIDSON, PANTHER, JAWA, PUCH, TRIUMPH, ZUNDAPP etc. but nevertheless not forgotten here in Indonesia.
