1. MAIN CHARACTERISTICS IN VOLUME AND SPACE

► Tall and deck-roofed, the brick-faced main block is linked with a projecting octagonal gymnasium by a wide, arcaded and colonnaded foyer toward the street. The three-axed portico and the entrance are emphasised by vertically coordinated slit windows and carved limestone slabs representing young people on the parapets and the rectangular balconies. Generous overall design, delicate implementation and details make this an imperishable creation of the 1950s.

IV. SUMMARY EVALUATION OF SUBJECT In a few sentences explain the principal reasons for the selection of this particular subject for the ATRIUM project, why it is of remarkable interest for the anticipated cultural route? The nice way through the former river bank to the school would be an ideal addition to the “city tours”. This building was planned and built in the Rákosi Era (1950-56). It represents a good architectural quality. Its architecture, Gyula Rimanóczi was a famed architect of the country. The building can be found near the Vienna-Budapest arterial road. With its architectural quality, innovative application of the traditional, historical forms, low-key but aesthetic decoration this building is outstanding among the socialistic realistic buildings of Győr.

1. REPRESENTATIVENESS

2. POTENTIAL

Summarize here the main characteristics of the subject as a representative of architectural traces of totalitarian regimes of XX th Century. The architecture complex represents the “friendly face” of Communist area on a high standard of up today architecture in the 1950th years. The function of this building is a mechanical technical high school. The communist policy managed the vocational training with high priority. Győr was an important mechanical industrial centre already in that age. The composition of the building fits to the expectations of the communist era. The building is a preferential public building of the quarter. Summarize here the subject’s potential for cultural tourism interest. The project shows the “friendly face” of Communist area with a good atmosphere. This school is a good example of the architecture of that age although it needs renovation and modernization. The building does not utilize its environmental connections, empty areas of large size are available around the building. The school can be the central educational, cultural and sports centre of the district. The institute has good connections to the Audi factory and the Széchenyi István University as well. Its representative internal spaces make it suitable for organizing exhibitions, conferences.

IV. SUMMARY EVALUATION OF SUBJECT In a few sentences explain the principal reasons for the selection of this particular subject for the ATRIUM project, why it is of remarkable interest for the anticipated cultural route? Nice square with a friendly atmosphere. The building assembly was planned and built in the Rákosi Era (1950-56). It represents a good architectural quality. Its architecture, Kálmán Lakatos was a famed architect and urbanist of the country, he had a great influence on forming of the cityscape of Győr. With their architectural quality, innovative application of the traditional, historical forms, low-key but aesthetic decoration this building is outstanding among the socialistic realistic buildings of Győr. The building assembly organized around the park is exemplary also from the aspect of livable urban environment.

1. REPRESENTATIVENESS

2. POTENTIAL

Summarize here the main characteristics of the subject as a representative of architectural traces of totalitarian regimes of XX the Century: The architecture complex represents the “friendly atmosphere” of Communist area. The flats in the building assembly were originally planned for the workers of the factories operating on the adjacent area for providing a kind of higher living standard. The composition of the buildings fits to the expectations of the communist era. The building assembly is organized around a preferential green park of the quarter. Summarize here the subject’s potential for cultural tourism interest. The project shows a “friendly face” of Communist area with a good atmosphere interesting goal for tourism. Major part of the flats is in privately owned, so the possibility for the touristic utilization of the buildings is strongly limited. Near to the park some catering places (restaurants, confectionaries, bakeries). Their development, occasionally expansion can be reasonable.

IV. SUMMARY EVALUATION OF SUBJECT In a few sentences explain the principal reasons for the selection of this particular subject for the ATRIUM subject, why it is of remarkable interest for the anticipated cultural route? Interesting document of the Communistic area in Győr. The building assembly can be found in the city of Győr, on the former Stalin Road, today on the Szent István Boulevard which is the main part of the Győr-section of the Vienna-Budapest route. The building was planned and built in the Rákosi Era (1950-56). With its architectural quality, traditional, historical forms this building assembly is outstanding among the socialistic realistic buildings of Győr.

1. REPRESENTATIVENESS

2. POTENTIAL

Summarize here the main characteristics of the subject as a representative of architectural traces of totalitarian regimes of XX the Century: The architecture complex represents the “phalanstery-look.” of Communist area. The representative composition of this residential building was important because of the preferential cityscape aspect. The flats in the building were originally planned for the workers of the factories operated in the adjacent areas for providing a kind of higher living standard. The composition and decorations of the façade met the stylistic expectations of the communistic regime. Summarize here the subject’s potential for cultural tourism interest. The subject shows a “phalanstery-look.” of Communist area with an acceptable atmosphere. Interesting goal for tourism. Major part of the flats is in privately owned, so the possibility for the touristic utilization of the buildings is strongly limited. The buildings are partially renovated. The park enclosed by the building assembly can be an exciting town-development area. As a touristic target these building are not significant.

The lower band of the frontage is articulated by an entrance framed by slender pilasters. The columns support stone balconies with parapets featuring full-length sculptures representing workers, peasantry and the intelligentsia. A block that would be second to none in Moscow, it introduced new scale to the development of the former Stalin Road, exemplary for the monotonous and continuous rows of houses screening the historical centre to the north of Szent István Road. ►
