From the Coordinator Building strong foundations for lifelong learning begins here in Hopkins Early Childhood programs. We see it in children’s classrooms where students’ natural curiosities and creativity are nurtured. We see it in our adult classrooms where parenting knowledge and skills are cultivated and supported. And, in a report recently released from the University of Minnesota, we heard parents participating in Hopkins Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) resoundingly agree that strong foundations in their parenting skills and in their children’s early learning are being laid here. In the 2012 Hopkins ECFE Evaluation Project, 96% of parents reported that their participation in the Hopkins ECFE program improved their parenting skills. We know that unprecedented growth and development occur in the first five years of a child’s life, so the quality of parenting during those years really matters. As one parent stated, “I’ve learned so much in ECFE! I’ve learned about parenting styles, setting limits, sibling relationships, the importance of routines, age-appropriate activities for my child, healthy communication, sleep-challenge solutions, and community resources.” In addition to developing parenting skills, other parents highlighted benefits such as, “I don’t feel alone with my parenting struggles,” and “With ECFE, I’ve gained a sense of community. I have been exposed to all of the many resources there are in our community to help with parenting.” One of those many resources parents become aware of is our unparalleled Hopkins Preschools. Common to all of our preschools are engaging learning environments and discovery-based curriculum. Expansion of our curriculum this year to infuse STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) concepts, materials, and experiences into the community, supports the natural dispositions of children to be curious and problem-solvers. Children in our classrooms inquire, observe, hypothesize, and evaluate — all skills that create a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Join us and discover educational, interactive, and stimulating experiences for both you and your child.

Meet Early Childhood Program Secretary:

Meet Job Title: Preschool Teacher

Liz began working at Harley Hopkins Family Center for the Early Childhood Program in October of 2011, and enjoys the sense of community.

Hannah received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Iowa State University this spring. Having worked with children of all ages for many years, working with preschoolers was a natural fit for Hannah.

Liz Reynolds

She has two lovely daughters, both graduates of Hopkins Public Schools, Madeline (21) and Abigail (19). Madeline now lives in Chicago, and is a full-time student at Columbia College. Abby is a student at Normandale, but you can see her smiling face at the Hopkins Pizza Lucé. Liz also has a third child, her 3.1 pound teacup Yorkie, Poppy, who loves to visit her friends at Harley. Liz loves music, good sushi, and thinks of herself as the “Queen of the Thrift Stores.” She loves the thrill of the hunt, and when spring hits with all of the garage sales, that’s where you’ll find her!

Look inside, pages 2-8, for Early Childhood classes and events.

Hannah Boettger

As the afternoon Stepping Stones Preschool Teacher at the Tanglen site, Hannah is very excited about this new chapter in her life. She looks forward to learning as much as she can and becoming a part of the Hopkins Early Childhood Program. Hannah currently resides in Eden Prairie with her family, where she used to be part of the High School Dance Team. She enjoys being outside, traveling, listening to music, shopping, and spending time with her family and friends.

See pages 12-14 for Hopkins Preschool information.

Meet Teacher Assistant: Connie Wyttenhove

Connie’s connection with ECFE began twenty-seven years ago when she brought her children to the program. At ECFE, she met many families and stayed connected with them over the years. Deciding to return to work, Connie knew that a position with ECFE would be ideal. She wanted to give back to the program that had enriched her family’s life so much. She has been a teaching assistant at Harley and Ronald B. Davis for 14 years, and enjoys watching her students grow and tackle developmental challenges along the way. Residing in Minnetonka with her husband, Joel, and dog, Zoey, Connie enjoys knitting, gardening, playing golf, and keeping in contact with her three grown children, Kelly, Zack, and Kacey who live in the area.

Early Childhood Family Education

You are your child’s first and most impor tant teacher

What are ECFE classes? Our ECFE Classes (ECFE is Early Childhood Family Education)

You are your child’s first and most important teacher. Our affordable ECFE classes can help you with that role. Our high quality classes are for you and your young children — birth to pre-kindergarten age. A typical class meets once a week and includes: • Parent-Child Activity. Time where you and your child together enjoy a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate play and learning activities. You’ll take home new ideas for things you can do together. • Parent Discussion. You’ll meet with other parents and a licensed parent educator to share support, experiences, and information about child development and parenting techniques. • Children’s Activity Time. While you are in Parent Discussion (in separating classes), children learn and play with licensed early childhood teachers. Children practice social skills and will enjoy music, art, stories, and large/small muscle activities.

More Activities & Workshops

And there’s more — join us for Special Topics workshops and fun family events (page 8), and many other exciting activities (page 16, 17, and back cover)! Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also available for participants.

Didn’t start when your child was a baby?

No problem! We have classes for you and your child all the way from birth to five years old. You are welcome to join classes at any point it fits with your family’s life.

How to choose an ECFE class: Choosing an ECFE class to attend is easy. Aside from our events and Special Topics classes, all of our affordable ECFE classes meet once a week for 6 to 14 weeks. There are day and evening options for all age groups, and most classes have sibling care. Our classes fall into three categories: non-separating, gradual separating, or separating. Read the descriptions below and then check out our classes on pages 4-7.

Non-Separating Classes What you need to know about non-separating classes: • Parents and children stay together in the classroom for the entire duration of the class. • Parents remain in the same room with children and interact with them in varied learning and play activities. • A licensed parent educator leads discussion on topics such as child growth and development, transition to parenthood, and how children learn and play. • Discussion, sharing, and support take place within sight and sound of playing children.

Gradual Separating Classes What you need to know about gradual separating classes: • Parents and children follow the same format as listed in separating classes, except that parents start out meeting in the same room with the children and then move to a separate room several weeks into the semester. • Separate meetings begin with only short periods of time away from the children. • Gradually, the periods are lengthened as children adjust to the separation.

Registration for Fall 2013 ECFE lottery classes must be received by Thursday, April 18 at noon. See page 9 for lottery information.

Separating Classes What you need to know about separating classes: • Parents and children interact and explore activities together for about 30 minutes of class time. This provides an opportunity to share, learn new ideas, games, songs and activities that can be used at home. • Following interaction time, parents meet in a separate classroom with a licensed parent educator for discussion of topics related to child development and parenting. They share ideas, information and experiences with one another, gaining knowledge and encouragement. • While parents meet with a licensed parent educator, children participate in age-appropriate activities with a licensed early childhood teacher and a teaching assistant. Children are provided experiences which encourage social, emotional, physical and cognitive development.

Sibling Care Sibling Care (if needed) is available on a sliding-scale basis for children from birth through kindergarten who are not involved in class. Starting at 6 months of age, siblings need to go to sibling care. Newborns and young babies are welcome to come to class with parents. Sibling care cost is half of the class fee. Sign up for it on your registration form, page 11.

The questions never end during this amazing time of development. Our parent educators have the knowledge and experience to field all your important questions. Our non-separating classes, for parents and infants together, are held once a week. IMMUNIZATION HISTORY: Fill in the MO/DAY/YR information for children 2 months of age and older. Vaccines/doses in shaded boxes are not required by law. If child received a combined shot (like Hib-hep B), write the date in all the boxes that apply.

Immunization Program P.O. Box 64975 St. Paul, MN 55164-0975 651-201-5503 or 1-800-657-3970 www.health.state.mn.us/immunize IC#140-0474 (MDH, 6/2008)

Questions? If you have a question about immunizations, call your clinic or local public health department.

Note for Providers 1. Remind parents to immunize children on time. • As an ECFE/School Readiness provider, you are in an excellent position to help remind parents about immunizations. • Ask your local health department for an updated immunization schedule each calendar year so you will have the latest information on hand.

4. If your child is not up-to-date on his or her shots, you can catch up. Minnesota children are still getting diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella. These diseases are contagious. They can spread rapidly, especially among groups of children who have not received their shots. And some of them, like pertussis (whooping cough), are much more serious for children than they are for adults. As a parent, you can protect your children by making sure they get all their shots.

Notes for Parents 1. Give your child’s immunization history to the ECFE/School Readiness coordinator when you enroll. 2. Keep track of your child’s shots. 3. This program will be only one of many times you will need an upto-date shot record for your child. • It will save you time if you keep a shot record for each of your children. • Be sure to have the record updated each time your child receives a shot. • You will also need this record for school, camp, college, and if you go to a new doctor or clinic.

ECFE/School Readiness Immunization Record-Instructions Who should complete this form? Either the parent/guardian or physician/clinic, can fill in the child’s immunization history. You can get a legal exemption to the immunization law for medical or conscientious reasons.

Hopkins Preschools

Kaleidoscope • Stepping Stones

Ready for a world of discovery and learning? Your preschool choice does make a difference.

Our preschools are unparalleled Inside our preschools you’ll discover a stimulating learning environment designed to create excitement around learning. Our internationally recognized curriculum approach promotes curiosity and the development of the whole child. What makes our Hopkins Preschools exceptional: • Our curriculum. Developmentally appropriate, our guided, discovery-based curriculum is inspired by the signature Reggio Emilia Approach. The curriculum adapts to the interests of the children and allows them to plan, think, experiment, evaluate and amend their ideas. • The environment. We boast creative, engaging classrooms and nature-oriented playgrounds that encourage exploring and inspire learning. • Our well-trained teachers. Not only do all hold a master’s or bachelor’s degree, they have extensive experience in creating nurturing surroundings that kindle curiosity and boost learning. • Social and emotional growth. Children make the social, academic, and physical connections to school, while creating long-lasting relationships.

It’s about the whole child, which I think is wonderful. My child gets physical activity (climbing wall, recess), relaxation work (yoga), encouragement for proper nutrition, academic support, and the opportunity to express herself creatively.

• Preparation for kindergarten. We provide transition and introduction into elementary school. Families love our flexible options, including full- or half-days, 2-5 days a week, with school-year, summer, or year-round choices. We’re conveniently located at five sites in Minnetonka, Hopkins and Golden Valley. Our fullday option is open 6:45 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

2013-14 Registration Information Registration for the 2013-14 school year is ongoing. Please call us at 952-988-5000 for current openings and registration information. Waiting lists will be kept for all classes. Families will be notified as openings become available. See page 14 for Summer 2013 registration information. To Register: visit www.HopkinsSchools.org/Preschool or call our staff at 952-988-5000.

STEM • Science Technology, Engineering, Math STEM in all Hopkins preschools Children are natural explorers, sense-makers, and problem-solvers. What they explore depends on the materials, experiences, and support we provide them. Next fall, all Hopkins preschool programs will have STEM curriculum.

—Stepping Stones parent

Hopkins preschool program is well-poised for the expanded STEM learning because it is already centered on exploratory learning, a cornerstone of the Reggio-inspired approach.

Questions? Contact us! 952-988-5000 www.HopkinsSchools.org/Preschool [email protected]

The STEM for Preschool project provides our preschool classrooms with the tools and knowledge necessary to assist children in an elevated beginning exploration and understanding of STEM concepts. This will give preschoolers the STEM base knowledge, ready to be expanded on, as they move into deeper STEM concepts through the Hopkins Public Schools curriculum.

Preschool is the perfect time to start developing STEM concepts because students are already so curious. They want to experiment and STEM curriculum helps us frame those experiences. —Karen Tadewald Preschool Program Supervisor

We thank the Hopkins Education Foundation for the grant to bring STEM materials and experiences to Hopkins’ youngest learners.

Elementary Programs

Junior & Senior High

Here are just a few of the things that make Hopkins K-6th grade special! • NEW! Spanish Language instruction for all kindergarten and first grade students in Fall 2014. • Our STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and EiE (Engineering is Elementary) curriculum promotes science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for all students. Hopkins is one of only three schools in Minnesota that offers EiE curriculum. • Gifted and Talented Services begin in kindergarten, and ensure that enrichment opportunities are provided in core subjects. • Every Hopkins elementary school has a full-time counselor who partners with teachers, and works with individual students/families. • Every Hopkins elementary school offers orchestra and band. • Our teachers tap into the unique needs of each student to inspire a life-long enthusiasm for learning. • Digital content and devices in our classrooms has expanded our ability to customize learning for your child.

Hopkins offers one of the most enriched academic programs in the state. In addition to a rigorous core curriculum of English, math, science, social studies, and reading, students’ academic day includes an extensive experiential program including: • World Languages & Immersion programs • Visual Arts • Physical Education • Music • Family and Consumer Sciences • Technical Education • College in the Classrooms (CiS) • Extensive AP offerings

¡HOLA!

In addition to our extensive AP, College in the Schools, and Honors courses, Hopkins offers options: more than 250 high school courses and 60 junior high electives. Prepared for College — Prepared for Life Our secondary program gives students an extraordinary range of opportunities so they begin to know themselves, and are more focused and prepared when they enter post-secondary education or the workforce, because of their many experiences at Hopkins Public Schools.

NEW: World Language comes to all students in kindergarten and first grade

Starting in the 2013-14 school year, all Hopkins elementary schools will have Spanish language instruction integrated into their regular curriculum. Hopkins will be implementing the Spanish FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) program next fall in kindergarten and first grade. Children will have Spanish instruction 3 times each week, 20 minutes per time in kindergarten; and 30 minutes per session in grade 1. We will be adding a grade level each year through grade 6. The Spanish program will be focused both on Spanish language proficiency and cultural knowledge and understanding. Class instruction will take place primarily in Spanish.
