CB80 & CB90 Central Battery Ballast

One-lamp emergency illumination for dedicated central battery supply systems

A Division Of Philips Electronics North America Corporation

Product Summary Initial Light Output 325 - 1475 Lumens Full Warranty 1 Year (NOT pro-rata) AC Input Voltage 120/277 VAC, 60 Hz

APPLICATION

Central battery ballasts provide emergency lighting to existing fluorescent fixtures in buildings such as telephone exchanges or other facilities that have a central battery supply. The central battery ballast consists of a solid-state inverter, AC voltage-sensing circuitry* and switching circuitry in one compact metal case. Central battery ballasts can be used with most 17 - 215 W (2’ - 8’) T8, T9, T10 or T12 fluorescent lamps without integral starters, including U-shaped, HO, VHO, circline and energy-saving, and (4-pin) twin, quad and triple twin-tube compacts. They are also compatible with most one-, two-, three- and four-lamp electronic, standard, energy-saving and dimming AC ballasts. If used in a fixture intended for DC operation only, no AC ballast is necessary. Central battery ballasts are suitable for indoor locations. They are not suitable for air handling heated air outlets or wet, damp or hazardous locations. For information about specific lamp and ballast compatibility, please call the factory.

AC Input Current 60 mA AC Input Power Rating 0.35 Watts Dimensions 9.4” x 2.4” x 1.5” (238 mm x 60 mm x 38 mm) Mounting Center 8.9” (226 mm) Weight 1.5 lbs. (0.68 kg)

*NOTE: Model CB80 does not contain AC voltage-sensing circuitry and must be used in emergency lighting systems that are already equipped with an AC-controlled central battery supply.

Central battery ballasts can be modified to accommodate special AC or DC voltages and frequencies.

Central battery ballasts are available for the following DC input voltages: 12, 24, 32, 48 and 120 VDC. For 48 VDC systems selecting model CB90, see separate UL Listed model CB90-48 specification sheet.

OPERATION

When AC power fails, the central battery ballast immediately switches to DC power, operating one lamp at a reduced lumen output. Duration of DC-powered illumination is determined by the capacity of the central battery supply. When AC power is restored, the central battery ballast returns to the standby mode, allowing the AC ballast to operate the lamps.

INSTALLATION

Model CB90 requires a DC power source and an unswitched source of AC power (120 or 277 VAC). Model CB80 requires connection to a DC power supply only. The DC power source required for the central battery ballast is denoted by the last two digits of the central battery ballast model number. For example, model CB90-12 requires 12 VDC input voltage. The central battery ballast does not affect normal fixture operation and may be used with either a switched or unswitched fixture. The central battery ballast must be fed from the same AC branch circuit as the AC ballast. The central battery ballast may be installed inside, on top of or remote from the fixture. It may be remotely installed up to half the distance the AC ballast manufacturer recommends remoting the AC ballast from the lamp or up to 50 feet, whichever is less.

CB80 & CB90

Central Battery Ballast

One-lamp emergency illumination for dedicated central battery supply systems ILLUMINATION

Two levels of DC-powered illumination are available with most lamp types. When the external connector is closed, the central battery ballast operates one lamp at high level illumination. If low level DC-powered illumination is desired, the external connector must be open (disconnected). Selection of either high or low level illumination is determined by lamp type and available central battery capacity. Depending on the type of lamp, wattage and input voltage selected, the central battery ballast produces 325 to 1475 lumens (see Input Voltage Charts). During DC-powered illumination, one lamp is illuminated, even if installed with a multi-lamp AC ballast. NOTE: For lamps longer than four feet in length, the external connector must be open (disconnected).

SPECIFICATION

DC-powered backup lighting shall be provided by using a standard fluorescent fixture equipped with a Philips Bodine _____ (CB90, CB80) central battery ballast. The central battery ballast shall consist of a solid-state inverter, AC voltage-sensing circuitry* and switching circuitry contained in one 9 3/8” x 2 3/8” x 1 1/2” compact metal case. The central battery ballast shall be capable of operating one __________ (lamp type) fluorescent lamp at _________lumens (see Input Voltage Charts). The central battery ballast shall have 0.35 Watts of AC standby input power and Amps of DC input current from an external volt DC power supply (see Input Voltage Charts). Duration of DC-powered illumination is determined by the capacity of the central battery supply. The central battery ballast shall be suitable for indoor locations. It shall be suitable for installation inside, on top of or remote from the fixture and shall be warranted for one full year from date of purchase. *NOTE: Model CB80 does not contain AC voltage-sensing circuitry and must be used in systems that are already equipped with an AC-controlled central battery supply.

WARRANTY

Philips Bodine central battery ballasts are warranted for one (1) full year from date of purchase. This warranty covers only properly installed Philips Bodine central battery ballasts used under normal conditions. For the warranty period, Philips Emergency Lighting will, at its option, repair or replace without charge a defective central battery ballast, provided it is returned to the factory transportation prepaid and our inspection determines it to be defective under terms of the warranty. Repair or replacement, as stated above, shall constitute the purchaser’s exclusive warranty, which does not extend to transportation, installation, labor or any other charges; nor does it apply to any equipment of another manufacturer used in conjunction with the central battery ballast.
