CIS 101 - Introduction to Computer Information Systems 2013 Fall Session Course Syllabus Lecture: TH 1230-1520. SS-138 Lab: T 1100-1150 LA3 Instructor: Henry Tran Email: [email protected] Phone: (562) 860-2451 Ext. 4488 Course Description This course provides the student with the essential knowledge required for a wellrounded understanding of the use of the computer as a tool to produce useful information in small and large organizational environments. The course allows the student to achieve an understanding of computer technology, computer hardware, computer software, and how computers can be used to produce meaningful information. The student will solve applied problems in spreadsheet preparation and analysis using Microsoft Excel and will be introduced to basic operational concepts in database programming using Access, in creating and editing text in Word, and be introduced to presentation graphics using PowerPoint. Class hours: 3 lecture +1 hr. lab. arr. Prerequisite and Corequisite None Student Learning Outcomes 1. Create an organized set of folders, and successfully copy, move, delete, and rename folders and files according to a model assigned by the instructor. 2. Define the terms information processing, data, and information. 3. Design, enter, and analyze spreadsheet applications. 4. Access data and generate reports from a database management system. 5. Demonstrate the creation, editing and printing of documents from a word processing program. 6. Demonstrate the ability to create, edit, and launch a simple graphics presentation using a presentation management system. Required ebooks and Supplies TEXTS: The required materials are an access code to myitlab and the books. Choose only one of these options:  GENERIC myitlab Office 2010 plus eText (no printed books) at http://www.myitlab.com --- $110. This option is all electronic. Later if you decide to buy the books, then you can upgrade to books. The cost is $35 per book (3-holed punched loose leaf). Shipping is free via ground delivery method (slow).  Value Pack: myitlab plus printed books at the Cerritos College Bookstore --- $158.25 new, $118.75 used. This option gives you the myitlab access code and 3 books (1 lecture book and 2 lab books).  MyITLab Access Code Only - If you have the books you can buy just the access code at myitlab.com for about $80. It is NOT recommended to ONLY buy the access code. OTHER MATERIALS:  1 USB Drive and a headset/ear buds when you use the computers on campus

 A computer with the Windows operating system, Microsoft Office 2010 Professional, and Internet Explorer. Access to the Internet and an email account. These computer tools are available in the CIS computer labs in the Liberal Arts building, LA3 - LA6 and in the open CAI Labs in the Library, LC-137. You may of course use your own computer tools. Also, you may purchase discount software at: http://www.collegesoftware.org/ . Grading 3 Examinations (40 points for each) 120 37.5% Final Examination 50 15.5% 5 Win7 Lab assignments (10 points each) 50 15.5% 10 Office 2010 Lab assignments (10 points for each) 100 31.5% Extra-Credit (4 Lab Assignments 10 points each) 40 Total Points 320/360 100% A 100-90% B 89-80% C 79-70% D 69-60% F 59-0%. Late Submission All assignments and exams are to be taken on scheduled dates. Late submission will result in a 50% deduction of the net score. For example if your score is 90% and submitted after due date, your score will be 45% after the 50% late penalty. Extra Credit assignments will not be accepted after the due date. Course Schedule Reading assignments, lab assignments, quizzes, examinations and other class activities will be weekly posted online. Attendance  To meet attendance requirements, I will check attendance every class meeting. A student who misses two class meetings will be dropped from the class.  It is YOUR responsibility to drop this course if it becomes necessary. Withdrawals must be completed by the required withdrawal deadlines. As the policy states, "Failure to officially withdraw from class will result in an "F" grade for the class.
