CIVE 401 Homework Assignment 6 Due 30 March 2012 Read chapters 3 and 4 in Houghtalen et al (2010). Work and turn in problems 3.11.10, 3.12.4, and 3.12.5 in Houghtalen et al (2010) and the five problems given below. Candidates for grading: problems (1), (2), and (5) below. (1) Carefully sketch and label the energy grade line (EGL) and the hydraulic grade line (HGL) for the hydraulic system shown below. Indicate the relative slope of the energy grade line along the system.

D, 2f Globe Valve Partially Open Diam. = D, Friction Factor = f

Conical Expansion

5D, f

Centrifugal Pump Abrupt Contraction 2D, f 2D, 2f

Pressure Tank

(2) All of the pipes in the system shown below are concrete with a roughness of 0.04 in. If the pressure drop from pt. 1 to pt. 2 in the system in prob. 1 is 98 psi, what is the steady flow rate through the system? Assume that local losses are negligible.

(3) In the system below, when the valve is closed water flows from reservoir A to reservoir B. What is the flow rate into reservoir B when the valve is opened to allow water to flow into reservoir C also? Neglect local losses and assume that the diameter of all of the pipes is 0.10 m and that the Darcy friction factor is 0.02 for all of the pipes.

(4) Repeat problem (3) for the case where the friction factors are not known, but the 0.10-m diameter pipes are all made of new commercial steel. (5) Neglecting local losses, find the flow rate in pipes A, B, and C shown below.
