NEWARK BRASS FESTIVAL

CLASSICS MEETS JAZZ WITH

ALLEN & LAURA VIZZUTTI WELLS CATHEDRAL SCHOOL BRASS ENSEMBLE AND THE ALL STAR JAZZERS

FRIDAY, 4 FEBRUARY, 7.30PM, BARNBYGATE METHODIST CHURCH

MESSAGE FROM ANGELA SMITH, FESTIVAL DIRECTOR: Welcome everyone to the third Newark Brass Festival. When I told our patron, the legendary trombonist Denis Wick we had booked Allen Vizzutti for this year’s festival he said “you have just hired the greatest trumpeter on the planet”. At that point I knew that this event was going to be truly special. My reason for setting this festival up was to encourage brass musicians to play to the very best of their abilities and to have high rewards for their hard work. I was determined that everyone should be heard by the best judges I was able to entice here and I am delighted to be able to welcome back internationally renowned players trumpeter Paul Archibald, trombonist John Kenny and tuba player Stephen Wick for the third year running. Of course this year we are thrilled to have US trumpet legend Allen Vizzutti to star in our concerts, be guest judge for our two competitions and to lead our masterclasses. Allen will be playing with his wife, world class concert pianist Laura. I am also very pleased to welcome Wells Cathedral School Brass Ensemble who will be playing in the first half of this concert. Festival regulars may spot the return of our fabulous first year open prize winner trombonist Michael Buchanan in the ensemble. This year I wanted to try and cover as many aspects of brass playing as I could so Allen will be playing with the All Star Jazzers in the second half of this concert and I extend a very warm welcome to them. Well everyone, that’s more than enough from me, so sit back and enjoy our eclectic mix of classics and jazz.

MESSAGE FROM DENIS WICK, FESTIVAL PATRON: I take my hat off to everyone involved in Newark Brass Festival. A lot of people have good ideas, but here a good idea has been translated into an amazing happening. In today’s difficult financial climate it is very hard to get anything off the ground, so I applaud you all and wish you every success for this weekend’s event.

Saint-Gobain Formula is the former British Gypsum site at Newark. British Gypsum were a part of BPB Industries which was bought by the global French company SaintGobain. Saint-Gobain are better know as glass makers, car windscreen and the 'gherkin' building in London are some of the more famous ones, also fibre glass insulation. Formula Newark which also operates the gypsum quarry at Bantycock, and are currently restoring the former quarry at Kilvington is a specialist plasters site. Whilst building products are made from the gypsum after being, excavated, crushed, calcined and packed the specialism comes from the high purity gypsum available in Bantycock which is processed and used for the agricultural, food and animal feed industries. The core business is around pottery plasters, dental plasters, art and decoration plasters. International building materials company Saint-Gobain which has a long established base in Newark has given the town’s annual festival for brass players a shot in the arm with a substantial sponsorship package. Saint-Gobain is well known in the town for supporting a variety of community projects. Festival director and local piano and brass teacher Angela Smith (54) of Valley Prospect welcomed the company’s help. “Putting on an event of this magnitude takes a huge amount of effort and dedication,” said Mrs Smith, “so to have the backing of such an important global company as SaintGobain is a fantastic boost.” Newark Works Operations Manager Mark Hardy said: “Supporting the community in this and other ways helps Saint-Gobain, one of the largest employers in the area, to build better relationships. Music is something that everyone has in common and to be asked to support and promote this event is a pleasure.”
