Four against two in two separated fields

Rules of the game: The team with the youngest players places its 4 players in one area (15m x 15m) while the second team distributes its players between both fields: two in the first and two in the adjacent area with the same dimensions as the first one. The 4 players of the first team try to pass the ball as often as possible between them without letting it run across the sidelines or losing it to the two defenders of the second side who do everything to win the ball If this happens the defenders must pass the ball quickly to their two team mates in the adjacent area. Whilst they receive the ball the two successful defenders join them, followed by two former attackers, who now have to win the ball or force the 4 attackers to make a mistake. In order to be able to play a pressing defence against the 4 attackers it is advisable that after every change of possession of the ball, the two freshest players and nearest players the side which lost the ball run quickly into the adjacent area.

When the ball runs across one of: the 3 side lines of the area played by the attackers, a push-in is awarded to the 2 defenders to their team-mates in the other zone with the defender at a distance of at least 5 yards. To win a point, a team has to keep possession for at least 20 seconds. To win the match three points are needed. Variation: After every pass the passer has to move out of his position and offer himself in a different part of the field at least 5 yards away from his former location Variation: At the same time 4 vs.2 and 2 vs 4 are played seperately in both areas: Both attacking teams try to keep the ball in possession for a longer time. Best of five competition.

Coaching objectives : 1. To maintain a high level of concentration for at least 20 seconds 2. To avoid the 1:1situation looking out systematically for the "two versus one ". 3. Not to enter with the ball into the range of action of any defender and try to pass it at the moment when you have committed the defender. Use as of ten as possible direct or wall passes (instead of one touch with two quick touches to assure a higher percentage of success) 4. To learn to lift the ball slightly over the opponent's stick, especially when the attacker is situated in one of the corners of the field where less passing options exist. 5. To learn to execute dummies at the precise moment to gain time, space and self-confidence. 6. To learn to run away from the defenders and make yourself available for a pass in a zone which is not controlled by the defence and not too close to the ball carrier.Receiving the ball in a position far away from the defence will give you more time and also space to control it and play it again with success. To try to make yourself available in a zone not already occupied by a team-mate. 7. To pass the ball with speed and accuracy. 8. Dont indicate to the opponents the direction of the intended pass. 9. To bend the legs and keep the centre of gravity as low as possible to the ground during the defence. This will allow maximum use of the stick 10. To invite the ball carrier through a body movement to play the ball in the direction you want him to pass. 11. To be aggressive when you defend and be prepared to give your very best in order to reduce the time and space at the disposal of the attackers. 12. To always consider the position of your fellow defender before you go for the ball. The defence is generally rnore effective against attackers situated in a corner of the field •

Fast Attack Four against two with 3 teams of 4 players (Neutral goalkeepers can be included) Rules of the game.

The game is played on the 6-a-side or the full size field. After a visual signal two teams both in possession of a ball attack from the centre line in opposite directions towards their respective goal which is defended by two players of a third team. The team which manages to score first wins. When the two defenders and/or the neutral goalkeeper gain possession they must clear the ball across the centre line.

After 5 attacks, the three teams rotate until each team has defended 5 times and attacked 10 times. Variation: The Defenders start from a different place like -on the base-line -10 m behind any side line or even -on the same centre line Once the attackers have started their offensive move, the defender leave their starting positions in order to stop them scoring. Variation: The attack is started from a limited area (15x15) in the position of the left or right wing Variation: Fast attack with two teams formed by 6 players (4 attackers and 2 defenders)

Coaching objectives 1. Attack in a rhombus formation - that means with depth and width 2. Prefer through passes to horizontal passes 3. Use as often as possible first time play 4. Gain experience in scoring. 5. As a defender learn to delay the attack and to channel it.

Corrective games:

Four players place themselves around a square (8x8 m) without being allowed to enter it. They should pass the ball to each other in a way that it always runs along the ground and crosses two lines of the square before being received and controlled close to the side lines outside of the square. Two defenders inside the square, should do everything they can to stop the four external players executing a high number of passes during 2 minutes of play. After 2 minutes, the two defenders switch their functions and positions with two of the attackers. Variation:

A fifth attacker is introduced. He offers himself inside the square for a pass from one of his four fellow players from outside of the square. They may choose between a pass across two lines to,anQther player positioned outside (1 point) or to the 5th player in the square. Every control of the ball inside the square and a subsequent pass to a team-mate outside of the square counts 3 points.

Through passes to a shadowed forward Rules of the game : Consult the rules of the Second simplified game for teams formed by three players "two against two with through passes to a forward" this game is played on a 6 a side hockey field by two teams formed by two players (to play between two circles), one forward (situated always in the opposing circle) and a fourth player (who defends without being allowed to leave the Circle Line) are forming one team. When the two midfield players are in possession of the ball the forward in the opposing shooting area should make himself available for a through pass. The third defender on the Circle Line, in co-operation with his other two team mates in the middle field, try to cover the zone of possible passes, not allowing the outlet player to receive the ball and then score (in either of the two cone goals or in the official size goal). No player is allowed to leave the zone assigned to him. Before the start of the second half, the midfield players change positions and functions with the forward and the defender of the same team. Duration of the match: two halves of five minutes only. Variation : Once the ball has entered the shooting circle any midfield player and also the defender may enter it in order to support the outlet player or interfere in his conclusion of the attack. Any of the attackers may score against a neutral goalkeeper. Variation Advanced players need to practise the through pass to a forward who is closely marked by a defender within the circle. Consult the first and second simplified game for teams formed by two players to improve the capacity of giving through passes and to work on the reception and the control of the ball when being marked

Coaching objectives In attack: 1. To maintain a high level of concentration for two periods of five minutes.

2. To show a high level of communication and co-operation skills. The player who wishes to receive the ball must learn to establish a visual agreement with the ball carrier, always showing him where to pass the ball. 3. To know how to look up whilst dribbling the ball and after having analysed the game situation with the help of his hockey knowledge, select the most efficient play (pass the ball to a team mate in a more favourable position, pass it straight up into the forehand of the forward or dribble it away from the defender to allow better passing possibilities). 4. To give preference to a through pass instead of passing the ball square or dribble it. 5. To know what to do next before receiving the ball. This will enable the player to continue the play as fluently as possible. 6. To switch quickly from attack to defence immediately after the position of the ball is lost. 7. Once the forward receives the through pass, his reception technique should consider his next move and the presence of a defender (see the last variation). Acting in this way he will score in less time. In defence: 8. Too quickly switch from to attack when the ball is won. 9. In order to make it difficult to execute through passes, the defenders should systematically reduce the space and time of the attackers. 10. Learn to co-operate in defence, always considering before the execution of a tackle the positions of his fellow defenders. 11. To read the play of the attackers and anticipate intentions in time.

Rescue of prisoners

Rules of the game: Two players of one team play against two of the other team in a field of 22.90 metres x 22.90 metres. The third and fourth player of each team are located in one of the four cone goals which are situated diagonally opposed in the corners of the field. The aim of the attackers is to play 10 consecutive passes without letting the ball go art of the limits of the field. The ball carrier may pass a ball to his team mate who offers himself in the centre of the field or to one of his two prisoners in the two diagonally opposed corners (prisons). When the prisoner controls the ball in his respective cone goal, he is getting released from being a stationary prisoner, moves out of the "prison" and dribbles or passes the ball to any other team mate while the former passer occupies his position in the "prison". Meanwhile the two defenders in the centre do everything to prevent their successful passing. Every pass has to counted loudly in order to inform the coach and the opponents about the actual standing of the game.

When the ball leaves the assigned field, a push in is awarded with defenders at a distance of at least 3 metres. \par \par The team which manages to play three times ten consecutive passes is considered the winner. Variation for more advanced players: - only long pass was over 10 metres or passes without a previous dribble count. - a player can only be released from "prison" when the pass to him was a very precise one. - The prisoners are located in two adjacent goals. - First time pass As count double. - A centre line divides the field in two halves. Any pass from one half into the other one towards the team mate count double. - Instead of remaining in prison, the prisoners may offer themselves through moving along one of the four sidelines of the field. - The prisoners may offer themselves on any of the 4 lines without coming into the field. - Only one prisoner is outside of the field offering himself for a pass of one of his 3 (4) team mates without moving away from the sidelines of the field.

Coaching objectives: 1. To be aware of all options before passing the ball. This awareness will allow you to select the most effective move which is generally the pass to the player furtherest away from the defenders. 2. To make it a simple and to look for a high percentage of success in your passes. Avoid the 1-to-1 situation and to keep the ball out of the range of action of any defender. 3. Accuracy and speed are important requirements of any pass. Besides any player should have the capacity to disguise the direction of his pass. 4. See the objectives of the first simplified game "Four against two in separated fields".

Consecutive passes in a quarter of the field Rules of the game: Two teams of four players compete between the centre line and one 22.9 metre (25 yard) line of the full field or between the circle and the centre line of the six a side hockey field. Each team tries to keep the ball in their possession for 10 consecutive passes with a distance of at least 10 metres. The official rules are applied. After one team has managed to pass the ball in succession ten times over more than 10 metres, there is an interval of two minutes before the game is restarted. During the interval the players of both teams discuss their tactics for the next trial. The game is restarted with a bully. To win the game it is necessary to play in three times ten consecutive passes. Variation: The game is played on a less wide field (30 to 40 metres only). To win it is necessary to keep the ball more seconds than the opponents. Variation: Two players from each team offer themselves always on one of the 4 lines of the playing area without being allowed to enter it. In order to improve the capacity of perception and attention of the midfield players all these four players must avoid being stationary on any line. Later on only one player of each team is obliged to remain on one of the 4 sidelines.

Coaching objectives: 1. To avoid a concentration of players close to a ball in order to make the defence more difficult. 2. To read the game correctly in order to be able to select the most effective passing options. 3. To assure the possession of the ball also in a critical situation when the opponents apply a pressing defence all when the ball carrier is drawn into a corner of the field. 4. To be capable of giving width and depth to the attack in order to stretch the opponent's defence. All attackers without the ball should constantly try to offer themselves in zones of the field which are less controlled by the defenders. 5. To make sure that there before the execution of any pass the visual agreement between ball carrier and receiver takes place. 6. To play as a team and reduce individual play, especially the 1:1 situation, as much as possible.

7. As defenders to place more players close to the ball than the attackers. To read the game, to anticipate the next moves from the attacking side and to condition their play.

Dribble the ball across the opponents goal-line Rules of the game: Two teams of four players each compete between the centre line and the 22.9 m line of the full size field with the aim to control the ball across the opposing end line. The game is started with a bully. All free hits must be taken as spot at least four and a half metres away from their respective end line. All other rules are the official ones.

Duration: 3 x 3 minutes each with intervals 2 minutes in which both teams should be elaborate tactics for the next 3 minutes play. Variation: Before the above described simplified game is offered its recommended to practise the following variation first: each team has 10 attacks, starting always from their end line. The defenders also have to start behind their own end line until the attackers bring the ball into play. The attack finishes with a goal or the loss of possession of the ball to the defenders. They may not to counter-attack. The team which with 10 attacks scores more goals is considered the winning one Variation: More advanced players practice on a less wide field (30 - 40 metres). Variation: "Make it and take it". After having scored, the attackers continue to attack. They immediately have to turnaround to attack the opposite goal which now has to be defended by the same opponents. The team which manages to score more goals in three minutes of play wins Variation: Instead of attacking two wide goals (50 metres wide) the attackers now have to score in either of two six metre wide goals situated on the wing positions on the 22.9 m and centre line. Variation: Each team of five players is in possession of a ball. To score its necessary to control one ball on the opposing in line and be in possession of the other one.

Long passes out of the midfield

Rules of the game: Two teams formed by four players, compete between the centre line and one 22.9 m line. Outside of this field, 13 metres behind each end line two cone goals (6 metres wide) are placed in the inside right position and inside left position. The game starts with a bully in the centre of the quarter part of the officials size field. The team which gains possession of the ball tries to keep it, despite pressure by the opponents, until one of the players is able to pass the ball through one of the two cone goals. No player is allowed to to leave the assigned field. It is recommended to place some reserve balls on every end line in order to restart the game without delay after every long pass

While the attacking team does everything to create sufficient space to gain time to properly prepare a long and precise pass, the opponents defend aggressively, trying always to have more players in the zone where the ball is played than the attackers. With the progress of time the players will find out that immediately after the successful tackle, there is an ideal opportunity to counter-attack with a long pass.

Duration of competition: 3 times 3 minutes

Coaching objectives: 1. To play with a rhombus formation and make sure of width and depth in your attack. 2. To lift the head whilst dribbling the ball in order to be able to collect information which will allow you to pass the ball to the best situated team mates 3. To know when to change the rhythm of the attack. To learn to accelerate at the correct moment. 4. To learn to offer yourself in a part of the field which is not controlled by the defenders. This zone, generally, is situated far away from the ball and at the opposite side of where the ball is. 5. To select the most effective passing option. Don't risk long passes when there seems to be a poor percentage of success 6. To be able to select the correct option for beating a pressing defence. 7. To know the how to execute successfully free hits and hit ins. 8. To avoid 1: 1 situations because of their low percentage of success. Instead, create frequently 2: 1 situations through systematic support of the ball carrier 9. To put in practice the combined marketing (marking closely within your assigned a zone) with constant communication between the four defenders 10. To always make sure of cover in defence. 11. To maintain a high level of concentration during the game.

Corrective exercises/Games: 1. See all simplified games for teams formed by only two players 2. All simplified games which train the capacity of keeping possession of the ball without and with a neutral player. •

Score, defend and counter attack Rules of the game: Two teams are formed by four players face each other in half of the full size pitch. It's recommended to use one neutral goalkeeper in each team. Before the game starts with a bully in the centre of the field, both teams have to toss a coin to decide who which one is to attack first the official size goal and which one must try to score with the pass from a distance through one of the two five metre wide cone goals, established on the centre line. When the ball leaves the field a across a side line the push in and in case the ball leaves the field across one of the end lines a hit in or a corner is awarded. For any other infringement of the rules consult the six a side or eight a side game, dependent on the age of the players.

Duration of the game: 4 times 3 minutes each. After each interval both teams a change sides and goals to attack.

Coaching objectives: 1. See the coaching objectives of the simplified games for teams formed by four players. 2. To know how to play effectively in the opposing shooting area. 3. To look out systematically for the goalkeepers rebound. 4. To know how to execute the free hits well and gain experience in building up the defensive wall. 5. To gain experience in important set plays like: in the free hits in front of the opposing circle, when the corners, penalty corners and in the penalty stroke. 6. To know the how to defend without giving away a penalty

Methodical progression for the practice of this simplified Game: 1. A neutral player always supports the team in possession of the ball. 2. See the game "Long passes out of of the field" (Game 7). 3. At least 3 passes have to be played in the centre of the field before the long pass can be executed.

4. Behind the to cone goals the fifth or even a sixth attacker must receive and control the through pass. The coach may also have asked him to finish the attack with a shot at the official size goal. 5. The same game is played on a less wide field (30 - 40 metres only). 6. See 4. Two attackers (front runners) are expecting the long pass out of the midfield through their respective cone goals. Being always close to the attackers, a defender is reading the game and tries to intercept the through pass to one of the two attackers in either goal. Every five minutes the players of both teams switch positions and functions. 7. The cone goals are removed but the two attackers, remained more or less on the same place about 15 metres behind the end line. After the control of the through pass, they must score despite the active presence of one defender and a goalkeeper. 8. The same as 7 but with a second defender who marks closely. 9. The same as 8, but with a third defender who acts as a sweeper.

Coaching objectives: 1. See the Coaching objectives of previous simplified Games. 2. The best moment to execute a a long pass is immediately after the recovery of the ball from the opponents 3. To disguise the direction of the pass. 4. To analyse and the game situation before receiving the ball to find out whether a long pass is possible or not. 5. Always look out for the long pass but when it is execution does not seem to lead to the desired success, change your mind and choose a play which assures the possession of the ball to your team. 6. As defenders, try to reduce the space and time at the disposal of the ball carrier and his supporting players. After having recovered the ball switch quickly to attack. •

5 a side indoor hockey Rules of the game: The official rules of the FIH are applied with the exception of: - Only five players of every team can play on the field at the same time. Generally one of them is the goalkeeper. There are only three players for substitutions. - It is permitted to lift the ball in any part of the indoor hockey field so long as the elevation of the ball (for instance over the outstretched stick of an opponent) is not considered dangerous.
