School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Madison, WI, USA Because of their extensive reach and concomitant efficiencies of scale, mediated information channels such as television and newspapers have been the traditional channels of choice for information campaigns. But research on how individuals actually use mass media information suggests that these channels may be better for some persuasive purposes than for others. This talk will apply a large body of research on channel effects to the global climate change issue and will offer recommendations on how to better intuit the influence of media stories on the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of a variety of audiences.
