people and society communicate in today’s highly technological world. Students blend theory and best practices to be well-prepared for work in the dynamic and evolving communications industry and as communication professionals in other business and nonprofit settings.

THE PROGRAM Based in Schott Hall, the Department of Communication Arts offers hands-on experience in Xavier’s own television facilities and at the student newspaper, as well as at additional media outlets. Full-time faculty are assisted by skilled adjunct instructors who are professional communicators in the Cincinnati market, offering students valuable interaction and current insights into the industry. The degree includes a choice of four majors: u   Advertising: Provides a comprehensive study of the field,

including principles of advertising, creative concepts, media planning, Internet advertising, research and management. u   Electronic Media: Prepares students for entry-level positions

in radio, television, cable, Internet and corporate video, including work in both the commercial and non-commercial broadcast areas. u   Communication Studies: Develops the knowledge and

practical skills necessary to promote effective communication processes within public and private organizations. u   Public Relations: Offers both comprehensive theory and

specific practical skills in the context of a liberal education to prepare for professional work in the corporate, private nonprofit and public sectors.

RESOURCES Xavier is among a select group of universities nationwide offering students the opportunity to work at an on-campus studio, which is both a teaching facility and a professional video production center. The Television Center is equipped with professional video production hardware and software, enabling students to: u   Learn technologies used in the television and video

OUTCOMES Xavier graduates in the four communication arts majors hold positions in radio, television and online media across the country, as well as careers in business, government and nonprofit organizations. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of public relations specialists is expected to grow 24 percent through 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations. The need for good public relations continues to grow in an increasingly competitive and global business environment. Emerging social media also is expected to increase job growth. New jobs in advertising will be created as the economy expands and generates more products and services to advertise. Job opportunities will be available in the expanding world of new media, such as online newspapers or magazines. The Television Center is very active in program production for cable television and industrial usage; the production, post production and editing facilities use students in a number of roles and encourage the development of high professional standards. Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is a national, student-managed organization offering a campus program of speakers, skill-building activities and social events. Closely associated with the Cincinnati professional chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the student organization helps members develop strong communication skills and networking contacts for the future. u   The Xavier University Advertising Club is an authorized college

chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) and is associated with the Cincinnati Ad Club. The club participates in the AAF’s National Student Advertising Competition in developing a campaign for a national company. All advertising majors are eligible for membership.

THE COLLEGE & THE CITY The College of Arts and Sciences is the oldest and largest college at Xavier University. Its goal is to provide excellent liberal arts education in the Jesuit tradition that prepares students for careers, professional or graduate school, and life in a global society. CORE CURRICULUM The foundation of Xavier’s success is its commitment to its Jesuit heritage. The Core Curriculum embodies Xavier’s mission and philosophy of education and serves as a valuable foundation for all undergraduate students. Within the Core, the four-course Ethics/Religion and Society (E/RS) Focus fosters students’ understanding of socially significant issues through study of the humanities, especially literature, philosophy and theology, as well as the social and natural sciences. Along with courses in their major, Xavier students also take Core courses in: cultural diversity, English composition, fine arts, foreign language, history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, science, social science and theology.

Founded in 1831, Xavier University is a Jesuit Catholic university in Cincinnati, Ohio, annually ranked among the nation’s best universities. Its three colleges offer 85 undergraduate majors, 54 minors and 11 graduate programs to 7,019 total students, including 4,368 undergraduates.

Major in public relations: 36 hours, including 30 hours of communication courses and six hours of elective courses. Since each major recommends certain courses as communication electives, it is important that students work closely with their academic advisors when choosing electives. The department also recommends that students consider minors in business or social science.
